Ello I have come to disperse wisdom

if you’re really new to the riordanverse want to understand all the references and such, here’s the series by timeline-ish:

1) Percy Jackson and the Olympians (First book is called ‘The Lightning Theif,’ the main introduction to most of the important characters and to the pjo world in general)

2) The Heroes of Olympus (First book is ’the lost hero,’ takes place a few months after PJO ends, also where you learn who Jason is)

3) The Trials of Apollo (First book is ’the hidden oracle,’ takes place shortly after HoO

4) Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (First book is ‘the sword of summer,’ doesnt involve many of the pjo characters but there’s a lot of references to them

5) The Kane Chronicles (first book is ’the red pyramid,’ honestly I found them kinda forgetful so I found it best to save them for last

6) Optional, but if you want more there’s shorter books such as the demigod diaries/files (short stories) camp half-blood confidential (worldbuilding sorta + short stories ) and demigods & magicians (Kanes chronicles and Percy Jackson characters meet).

Hello! So sorry for the (big) delay, I’m still trying to understand how this messages on Tumblr work.

That is really useful actually. I’ve been in the riordanverse for 2 years??? I think… not very sure. The point is I’m still trying to understand the inside jokes, ships, etc; it is a wide fandom and Percy is not my childhood like it is for so many (& so lucky) people, so I still feel very new here.

Im currently reading The Sun and stars, and I think I didn’t finish the Kane Chronicles because I have too many blank spaces in my memory.

So far has been a very welcome-y fandom. Idk why but I find it kinder than other fandoms. And messages like this one (someone who takes time to explain everything to a new one) is just another proof of that. Thank you for your message!!! :3

Three ways to read the Riordanverse's series

Whether you are a new fan or a returning one, you might be confused about the reading order of Riordan's books (especially since there are more than twenty of them, even without counting extra books - with those there are nearly forty). If so, you are in the right place. Here under the cut are 3 ways to read the Percy Jackson series, each one providing a different experience. (this took me so long to make you have no idea)

Obs.: You don't necessarily have to read the extra books, but some of them contain short stories that are relevant to the plot and beloved by the fans. I heavily recommend you read at least those (which will be marked with a ☆)

Obs. 2: We usually use a 3 or 4-letters acronym to refer to Riordanverse's series and books. Thus, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series would be PJO, The Lightning Thief (1st book of the series and the one they're adapting right now) would be TLT and so on. I'll try to avoid them but if you see them that's what they mean lol.

Obs. 3: Rick Riordan is currently releasing a new 3-books long series due to the show release which is being branded as a continuation of PJO. However, they contain spoilers of the second main series. Thus, they'll be marked as PJOX here for identification purposes.

Obs. 4: A lot of people will stop reading the series because they can't get through the first two books of TOA. I beg you to keep reading. The third and the last book of the series are two of the best ones Rick Riordan has ever written (with the last book being my favorite of his by far).

Chronological order

Recommended for: anyone

The chronological order of the stories, mainly following the guide made by taetaae_v, eliascsc, riordanverso and percyjstan (all on Twitter). The only thing NOT included is the first story from the extra book "The Demigod Diaries", as it contains spoilers/heavy foreshadowing about the first series, including the end. If you are reading for the first time, I advise you to not buy the book until you finish PJO and to read the story afterwards. If you are rereading the series, the story is chronologically located before everything else, so start by reading it.

Refer to the release order to know when to read the extra books (outside from the stories included below), since they contain content that can't really be placed. Also, Rick Riordan is not the best writer when it comes to consistency, so some of the short stories might actually contradict what is said in the main book series when placed where they are, even if it is the only reasonable time to place them.

Greek Mythology First order (Personal Favorite)

Recommended for: those who want to read the main series first before going to the Egyptian/Norse mythology spin-offs.

Besides Rick Riordan's three main 5-books series about Greek mythology, there are also two other 3-books series about other mythologies and following other characters. Although there are crossovers between the main series and the other two and they sometimes reference each other, there's absolutely nothing lost by reading the main series first and you can do that without receiving any spoilers.

The books are organized following the chronological order of the series, so PJOX comes before TOA. The extra books that aren't relevant for the story are added at the end of their series. You can also read TKC between PJO and HOO and MCGA either before or after TOA (TKC can actually be read at any point, but MCGA needs to be read after HOO).

Every book was cute and nice. We had short stories about different adventures. We had information about Greek, Egyptian and Nordic mythologies. Written in simple and funny way for every age. And the short stories were wholesome because I could reminiscing old memories.

Since I was already familiar with some myths, I can see how Rick worked those stories into something easy for the children and teenagers to read. The myths were told by Percy Jackson and it was a lot of fun. I recommend this read to the youngsters who like adventure and mythology and fantasy.

The books are great complementary to the different series. You’re not required to buy it of course, but if you want to read something to enlighten the day, then this is it.

Your life was in Ohio. Your home was in Ohio. Your job, however, was on the Northern East Coast. Life in Ohio had been everything you needed it to be. It was slow. It was tasteless. It was everything that happened in old black and white movies. What Ohio wasn’t, was her. Her. Twenty one years later and you can still see her shadow dancing in your dreams. Her green eyes. Her blue hair. You’d gotten in so much trouble for that. There are some days where you forget her name. Where you forget her memory. But she’s always inside of you. She makes up the best parts of yourself even if you don’t realize it anymore.

New York City has its perks. It also has its downfalls. Albeit the salary, your job was pretty boring, and pretty lonely. Being employed by the world's most top-secret (not at all) hidden spy organization was as exciting as it sounds, however being Maria Hills personal assistant wasn’t. You adored the woman; the work being done around you. You didn’t enjoy the integrated sexism. The lack of a challenge. The confidentiality. For Asgards sake, you majored in computer science, so despite technically having a desk job and emails to sort, you felt less then. Your shifts consisted of being fed classified information and being told to sit on your ass and get her a coffee. Not exactly a lifestyle that opened the door to having many friends.

When Nick Fury recruited you– yes Nicholas J. Fury, active director of SHIELD, himself– it was safe to assume that you’d expected at least a little more than this quaint isolating life. This life reminded you of her. She would’ve liked it. She. Natasha. The hard to amuse little girl from your childhood. Your first crush. The reason you’ve become so passionate about this job. The reason you haven’t been able to trust since you were seven. She’d just up and left. No goodbye. Not even a brief look back at your fading blue hair.

Into your adult years, you exhausted the resources you had to find her. Nothing. She’d become a ghost. A shadow dancing on street corners. Even now, when the wind blows in October, there are some nights that you can still hear her whistling. You just wanted to know what happened to her. What happened to little Yelena. Why the night a piece of your heart became a ghost your little town flooded. Russian spies, your mother had scoffed.

For years it hadn’t mattered the extent of your research. Nothing would make sense if it didn’t come from her. You wanted her back. Her dry jokes. Her scratchy laugh; deep voice. Her butterflies. You hadn’t felt butterflies like that since she’d disappeared. Natasha was your everything. But your life did go on without her. That’s probably what broke you the most. You could miss her with a deep ache, but still you succeeded and accomplished and loved and lost. Still you grew.

“Agent.” You didn’t hear Maria approach. You didn’t hear her tap the thick manilla folder on your desk. You didn’t hear her call for you. You felt her stare. The older woman's features were amused. Your cheeks were hot. ��It’s your big day, Agent. Fury wants you in 37E. Approximately five minutes ago.”

37E. Your heart stopped. Your thoughts clouded. Interrogation. Big Room. Fury. Nicholas J. Fury wanted you in the largest interrogation room on site. He’d used the words ‘big day’. Your eyes mimicked Ohio forest stars. Forest stars. That name had never left your heart. Maria laughed. She’d grown fond of you quickly, but you were a hard to read book. Innocent. Entirely too good at being alone. She found herself mesmerized by you more times than she understood you.

“Yes ma’am.” And then you were gone. Just like her.

37E was approximately seven minutes from your station if you took the stairs; nine if you took the elevator. You’d made it in four. Your hair was disheveled: from leaning into your palm at your desk or walking so purposefully to the interrogation room, you weren’t sure. Your heart skipped. Your hands clenched. You were so ready for this opportunity.

The manilla folder beneath your arm felt heavy. Hot. It burned your skin the longer you left it tucked away. You’d never gotten the chance to look at that manilla folder. If you did, maybe you would’ve been prepared for what you saw. For who you saw.
