Bangladeshi authorities have taken three student leaders, who helped coordinate rallies against government job quotas, from a hospital following days of deadly nationwide protests and state-imposed curfews and communication blocks. Officers reportedly forced the discharge of three leaders of the Students Against Discrimination movement from the Gonoshasthaya Kendra hospital in the capital, Dhaka, on Friday. Police had initially denied that Nahid Islam, Abu Bakar Mazumdar and Asif Mahmud were taken into custody. But Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan subsequently told reporters: “They themselves were feeling insecure. They think that some people were threatening them.” While Khan did not confirm whether the three had been formally arrested, he told reporters late on Friday, “We think for their own security they needed to be interrogated to find out who was threatening them. After the interrogation, we will take the next course of action.” [...]

Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Bangladesh's embattled prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, resigned Monday and fled the country after protesters stormed her official residence in the capital amid a growing revolt that began over quotas for government jobs in which hundreds of mostly protesters have died.
The announcement from the head of the army, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, came after security forces were overwhelmed by thousands of people incensed by a violent government crackdown descending on the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka, setting cars and offices ablaze.
Footage circulating online shows protesters celebrating inside Hasina's residence, removing furniture and elsewhere in the city trying to tear down a statue of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former prime minister and leader of the country's independence movement, who was assassinated in 1975.
Promising the formation of an interim government, Zaman pleaded with demonstrators to call off their protests.
"Whatever demands you have, we will fulfil and bring back peace to the nation, please help us in this, stay away from violence," said Zaman who promised the military would also back off.
"The military will not fire at anyone, the police will not fire at anyone, I have given orders."
Hasina arrived by helicopter in India at a military airbase 17 miles east of Delhi on Monday evening with the BBC reporting that she may be en route to London, citing unconfirmed reports.
A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that he wanted to see urgent action to "ensure democracy" won out -- but made no mention of Hasina coming to Britain or any discussions regarding where she might go into exile.
"The right to peaceful protest must be protected and never subjected to violence, and we call on the authorities to release all peaceful protesters and ensure due process is followed for those charged and prosecuted," he added.
"I hope that swift action is taken to ensure that democracy prevails and accelerate the process towards peace and security to people in Bangladesh."
Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, said she had been considering resigning for the past 24 hours and had left the country for her own safety at the insistence of her family.
He rejected the accusations leveled at the 76-year-old of outstaying her welcome after four terms totaling more than two decades during which she gradually morphed from the democratic icon catapulted into office in a people power uprising into an authoritarian leader amid crackdowns on dissent and allegations of graft.
"She has turned Bangladesh around. When she took over power it was considered a failing state. It was a poor country. Until today it was considered one of the rising tigers of Asia. She's very disappointed."
In Dhaka, demonstrators ignored an evening curfew as unrest and looting continued into the night with demonstrators breaching the gates and damaging the residence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in the Dhanmondi area of the capital where smoke was seen coming from the building.
Protesters torched the city's Mujibur museum.
Northeast of Dhaka, 150 miles away in Sylhet, the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police and the homes of several councilors were attacked.
Hasina's resignation came a day after more than 90 people were killed Sunday during clashes between anti-government protesters and police -- 13 of whom were among those killed after thousands of people attacked a police station in the northwestern district of Sirajganj.
Sunday's casualties brought the death toll to 280 since early July when student protests over the partial reinstatement by the courts of civil service recruitment quotas -- where sought-after government jobs were reserved for supporters of Hasina's ruling Awami League -- erupted into wider, and violent, anti-government unrest.
Government crackdown efforts escalated from tear gas and rubber bullets to live fire, curfews and Internet blackouts bringing hundreds of thousands more people onto the streets demanding change and ultimately Hasina's resignation.
Student organizers had called Sunday for a national non-cooperation government boycott under which people would refuse to pay taxes and utility bills.

Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed accuses Yunus government of “political witch hunt”
Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Tuesday accused the country’s Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of “using the weapon of judiciary” to conduct a “political witch hunt” against Awami League leaders.
Wazed said in a social media post:
“The judges and prosecutors appointed by unelected Yunus led regime to conduct farcical trial process through International Crimes Tribunal makes it a political witch hunt that forsakes justice and marks another ongoing onslaught to persecute Awami League leadership.”
His statement came a day after Bangladesh’s interim government said it had sent a note verbale, or unsigned diplomatic communiqué, to India formally demanding Hasina’s extradition.
Hasina was removed from power and forced to flee to India on August 5 amid widespread student protests against her Awami League-led government. She served as Bangladesh’s prime minister for 16 years. On August 8, the interim government of Bangladesh was led by Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus.
The Dhaka Tribune reported on August 15 that Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal is investigating Hasina on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity in connection with violent anti-government protests between July 15 and August 5.
Nine other prominent leaders of Hasina’s Awami League party, including general secretary and former road transport minister Obaidul Quader and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, are also under investigation.

[ad_1] An aide to the Chief Adviser of the Bangladesh Interim Government, Muhammed Yunus, has said that India’s neighbouring country does not plan to impose a ban on the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) after a monk formerly associated with the organisation was arrested on alleged sedition charges. Speaking to ANI, Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to Yunus, noted that Bangladesh is at a crucial stage, and the country’s Chief Adviser will soon give a national unity call to all political parties against all misinformation campaigns and against vested interest groups who are attempting to destabilize the nation. To a query on ISKCON being potentially banned in his country, Alam responded, “We have said we don’t have any plan to ban ISKCON. That is like we have said it repeatedly.” The situation in Bangladesh has been marked by increasing violence against minority communities following the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das. Das, who is associated with the Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was arrested in Dhaka on November 25. The arrest followed a complaint filed on October 31 by a local politician who accused him and others of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag during a rally of the Hindu community. On being asked about the goal of the national unity call given by Muhammad Yunus, Shafiqul Alam said, “I think we are at a crucial stage, and we think you have seen how the nation got together to oust Sheikh Hasina. So, the Chief Adviser will call all the political parties for national unity, unity against all the misinformation campaigns, unity against all the vested interest groups who are trying to destabilize the country and who are selling all sorts of conspiracy stories and all kinds of fake news about Bangladesh. ” Bangladesh local media reported today that Younus met with all political parties of the country. A report in the Daily Star cited Amar Bangladesh Party Joint Secretary General Asaduzzaman Fuaad telling reporters in front of the Foreign Service Academy that leaders of all the political parties assured Yunus that their respective parties would stand by the government on the issue of national unity. Fuaad was cited as saying in the publication that several political parties urged Prof Yunus to take steps to hold elections as early as possible after implementing the necessary reforms. Meanwhile, the Press Secretary of the chief adviser of the Bangladesh interim government, when asked about a writ petition in the country’s High Court seeking a ban on the broadcast of Indian TV channels, said, “I think it is a matter of the court. I think let the court decide. We believe in open media freedom and open access to all TV stations. We believe in that.” Lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, who filed the petition on Monday, is seeking a directive under the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006 to prohibit the broadcast of Indian TV channels, Dhaka Tribune reported. It also asks why a rule should not be issued instructing a ban on Indian TV channels in Bangladesh, as per the Dhaka Tribune report. The secretaries of the Information Ministry and the Home Ministry, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), and others have been named as respondents in the petition. Further, Shafiqul Alam accused the country’s ousted premier, Sheikh Hasina, of being a “mass murderer.” He said that thousands of people were killed and made to disappear under Hasina’s watch. On being asked about Sheikh Hasina’s recent allegations against Mohammed Yunus, Shafiqul Alam said, “Sheikh Hasina is a mass murderer. She has overseen one of the most brutal dictatorships. Under her watch, thousands of people were killed, thousands of people disappeared, millions of opposition activists were charged with fake cases, fake charges, and now she is talking. We are quite shocked and surprised that she is still allowed to talk to the media from her residence.” Hasina had accused the interim government of Bangladesh
of “unlawfully seizing power” and condemned the “direct and indirect persecution” of ordinary people. She accused the current interim government led by Muhammad Yunus of ‘harassing’ the leaders of her party, the Awami League. “The current regime, which unlawfully seized power, has demonstrated failure in every sector. It has failed to control the prices of essential commodities and to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives. I strongly condemn the direct and indirect persecution of ordinary people,” she said. The ousted Bangladesh prime minister condemned the “unjust” arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das and demanded his “immediate release”. Hasina also expressed concerns over the attacks against minorities in Bangladesh and their places of worship and called for ensuring the safety of religious freedom in all communities. Students’ protests against the quota system in government jobs earlier this year became a massive anti-government movement, forcing Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee. This was followed by establishing an interim government under Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus. [ad_2] Source link

Continuing with the crackdown against the deposed Sheikh Hasina regime, the interim government of Bangladesh on Tuesday (August 20, 2024) sent former Education and Foreign Affairs Minister Dipu Moni for four days remand. This is part of the widespread reconfiguring of the police department in a bid to instil confidence into the law enforcement departments.
Ms. Moni who became the first female Foreign Minister of Bangladesh in 2009 is being investigated for alleged involvement in a case of murder in Mohammadpur neighbourhood of Dhaka. She was arrested from the diplomatic zone of Dhaka on Monday (August 19, 2024).
For several years, Ms. Moni was the face of Bangladesh’s diplomacy and global interactions and was known to be close to Sheikh Hasina.
The administration led by Nobel laureate Prof. Mohammed Yunus also responded to growing public demand and announced that the families of those killed or injured in the anti-quota protests that led to the removal of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024 will receive financial support.
“The government has decided to set up a foundation to take care of the wounded and the families of the deceased and wounded who participated in the student-led revolution in July-August 2024,” Chief Adviser Prof. Yunus said on Tuesday (August 20, 2024) announcing the relief measure for those affected by the violence by law enforcement agencies under the Hasina-led government.
Two weeks after being sworn-in, the caretaker set up consisting of “advisers” has been grabbing headlines for the widespread action that it is pursuing for cornering the notable figures that were part of the Hasina government.
The law and order situation in the capital and nearby areas continue to remain uncertain because of the evident absence of police forces in the crowded areas. A large number of police officials are yet to report to work after they played a visible role in the violent crackdown against the protesters. This week, 73 police officers have been promoted with additional responsibilities. On Tuesday (August 20, 2024), 25 Deputy Commissioners, the chief administrative officers of the districts, were transferred. The administrative and police-related changes are expected to remain on track for the coming days.
The interim administration is under visible public pressure to take action against the Hasina-led administration’s top officials who are mostly in hiding. According to available information, at least 41 former Ministers and Deputy Ministers of the Awami League government are being investigated at the moment while the administration here has declared that Hasina and several of her top members of her law and order team would face charges of crimes against humanity.
Three cases lodged in the capital’s Jatrabari area on Tuesday (August 20, 2024) have levelled murder charges against Ms. Hasina, her sister Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter Sayma Wazed. Jatrabari and Uttara neighbourhoods of Dhaka witnessed some of the most intense protests by the students and civil society which was met with police action. Demand for action is high against the former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan who has been seen in viral social media videos inspecting video recordings of police action against the protesters.
The capital of Bangladesh is yet to fully recover from the strife that reached its peak when Ms. Hasina had to flee to India on August 5, 2024. The metro rail network, parts of which faced the brunt of the protesters as it emerged as a symbol of Hasina government, is yet to resume. Similarly portions of the elevated highway, that had made traffic within Dhaka easier is yet to be fully operational as cautionary measures remain in place.
In the meanwhile, the U.K.-based acting chairman of the opposition BNP has called upon his supporters and the media to describe Ms. Hasina as an absconder from justice. In a video message issued from London, Tarique Rahman called upon the people to avoid the “trap laid by the defeated dark forces” and said, “Do not hurt the weak, do not break the law. Let us build a new Bangladesh that will be based on non-discrimination and avoid the cycle of revenge and vengeance.”
