EVA HESSE (REVISITING):
Revisiting Eva Hesse - Artist Study:
I thought it would be useful to once again revisit Hesse’s work, as she continues to be an influential artist reference. During my formative critique, my work was also compared to hers, or considered “reminiscent” of her work, so I thought I would reconsider, and study Eva Hesse’s practice now later on in my practice of this year:
“Hesse’s reflection on whether to privilege forethought or spontaneity, structure or disorder, captures a persistent thread through the artist’s short but powerfully transformative career”.
“Hesse responded to the cold, autonomous forms of Minimalism—then at the height of its influence—with work that was bold and material, but also mysterious, fragile, sensuous; dependent on wall, floor, and ceiling”
“Her early compositions include figure drawings, abstract collages, and photograms, among other styles and media. But it was during her most acute period of grief—in 1966, after her father died and she separated from her husband, the artist Tom Doyle—that the sculptural work Hesse is best known for came into definition.“
- Artsy.com
Eva Hesse Untitled or Not Yet, 1966 San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) ^^
Eva Hesse No title, 1969-1970"America is Hard to See," at Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2015) ^^^
Vertiginous Detour, sculpture made of acrylic and polyurethane on papier-mâché, rope, net, and ball, by Eva Hesse, 1966 ^^
Eva Hesse, Contingent, 1969 - above. ^^^
“I destroy—rebuild and so it goes,” - Eva Hesse.
I admire all of Hesse’s work, including her drawing practice, but these particular works (above) especially, considering their relevance aesthetically and perhaps conceptually to my own work.
I love the bodily nature of Untitled or Not Yet. The organic bulgy sort of forms are left to hang and pull at their own will, only being captured by these net like structures. The way that the light is reflecting off of the materiality of these work evoke a sense of ‘wetness’ or fluidity. This reinforces this idea of a bodily form, I consider the works to have a sense of agency, and movement. An element I hope to have my own work.
In all of the other works shown, they are suspended/hung in a way that allows them their own space - which I consider to be one of the most successful recent developments in my own practice. I enjoy the works that are installed using the materiality of the work - the work being everything- rather than trying to hide fishing line - This leans back into this idea of anti-form and has this unapologetic sort of nature rather than attempting to create an affect, the work just is.
I find No title, 1969-1970 interesting as it appears to be hung, having it’s own space and allowing a 3-D sort of look, but is still by the wall. The work is in-between conventional/unconventional. There were suggestions to have some of my work on the wall as well as suspended away from the wall during my formative so this sort of install could be interesting to explore.
In all of these works there is a certain element of “delicacy” which is also present in my works. It’s always commented on during critiques, this idea of ‘fragility’ - I think that works to the advantage of the work when exploring ideas of tension - and I think that circles back well conceptually to the temporary, the body, memories, feminine identity.....

Jenny Saville
Another artist who shows a female body in her work is Jenny Saville. Born on May 7, 1970, she is one of the most recognizable contemporary artists. She is known for her large-scale painted depictions of nude women. Saville has been credited with originating a new and challenging method of painting the female nude and reinventing figure painting for contemporary art. Wikipedia said Currently, the artist lives in Oxford. Already in her first works, her main and most important topic was Exploring the human body, especially the female one. At first, she 'worked' the works of the great painting masters as said in Theartstory.org Saville borrows conventions from a long tradition in figure painting, whether in poses borrowed from Madonna and Child paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, the use of a color palette reminiscent of Peter Paul Rubens or the gestural painting of Willem de Kooning. Leonardo da Vinci's painting shows an imaginary vision of parenthood. The mother was idealized there and beautiful in perfect harmony with her children. Jenny rejected these concepts and decided to show the true vision of parenthood from a woman's perspective. The woman looks tired and annoyed. One of the children tries to break free and cries. The weight of motherhood is shown by the expression of lines and colors. Emotions are also strongly shown on the faces of the mother and children. Her next important job is Propped. In this work you can see a lot of inspiration from Lucian Freud, who in his paintings also devoted a lot of attention to the human body. Sothebys.com said It is an orgy of painterly excess, from the pained expression of vulnerability etched across Saville’s face to the nervously crossed hands whose fingers violently dig into the flesh of her thighs. Presented pose is not conducive to showing the female body, because it looks larger and more imperfect. It differs significantly from the women presented on the covers of the magazine. There are numerous redness and other imperfections on the skin. In her painting, Jenny shows that women should not be ashamed of their body, because none is perfect, but that is what their beauty is all about. Sothebys.com said On the 18 September 1997 record queues twisted around Burlington House for the opening of the controversial exhibition. The unparalleled media storm surrounding this event launched a barrage of stories in the news with headlines such as: ‘Artrage!’ at the ‘Royal Academy of Porn!’ which caught the attention of a wider public. Another picture of a naked chubby woman. She covers her breasts, sitting in a chair and leaning back. In the picture you can see the pubic hair of a woman who is considered non-female by society. The media promotes women with smooth skin and no hair on their legs or intimate areas. Body positive movement has been promoting body shaving a lot lately. Hair is a natural part of the body and women have been told that having them on their legs or in other places are not female. Jenny in her works shows that every woman should not be ashamed of her body, be proud of it and not attach too much importance to appearance, because each of us is different and beautiful in her own way. As said in Artsy.com Jenny said that she paints female nudes in extreme states of grotesque exaggeration—deformed, obese, brutalized, or mutilated—working against the male-dominated history of idealized portraits of women. “I want to be a painter of modern life, and modern bodies.

Week 1: Problem Solving
Excitement soon became uncertainty when I was faced with my first problem to solve for the Leach Potters Wheel Project… I am absolutely going to keep it and use it with my recently acquired basic throwing skills from a few semesters of Porcelain Throwing Courses at the Fremantle Arts Centre. However, my dad opened my eyes to my first problem… Where would I keep it…? Dad’s shed seems like a perfect place for it, he just doesn’t know it yet…
I have been researching potters, vessels and ceramic studios in preparation for converting dad’s shed… Following are three ceramicists that have caught my eye this week.
These vessels are by Turi Heisselberg Pedersen, Flowers 2012.
Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, Heisselberg creates stunning ceramic vessels which are both flowing and architectural. Her simplicity and eye for clean lines is immediately alluring, using variations on archetypal forms such as vases and pots, then manipulating the geometric shapes using a number of methods to create a functional and sculptural looking object. Turi has been able to tame all of these unique elements and control them in a clear and concise way, which is so often the case with Danish ceramics, both past and present.

Research point
From my scrapbook...
I saved this image in my digital scrapbook because I really liked the combination of formal typographic elements - here, I think, produced by a typewriter - and geometric, yet painterly shapes that appear to have been formed by some kind of overprinting. At first I thought this effect might have been created by some kind of collage, perhaps layered paper of some kind. It was unlike anything I’d seen before and reminded me that there are design methods that aren’t reliant on computers.
I did some research and found out that the designer, Karel Martens, is a dutch designer and typographer who uses a letterpress technique to create mono prints over pre-printed text.
Martens profile is on Artsy.com, and includes further examples of his work.
I also found a video profile on YouTube, which I’ve posted above.
