I chose this particular quote because I find it interesting the way the actual space around the work can be taken into account when analyzing the intention of the artist. When the genera space the artwork is hung in isn't "perfect" looking as what is expected in a typical gallery setting, then the viewer might then think it has to be intentional somehow. Could this in turn create a completely new interpretation of the artwork, even if the unique presentation might be an accident?

Comment:

This quote stood out to me due to the idea of the gallery walls aesthetic possibly taking away from the intentions of an artwork. I think the word “artify” is meant to describe how the gallery space may treat the artwork as more of a decoration than a work that is meant to be dissected. During the Thesis 1 show, I was concerned by the settings' effect on my piece’s objective. The setting felt as though it would distract from the full effect of my artwork, but the limited gallery space kept me from making any changes.

With our previous experience of establishing our spaces in the gallery for Thesis 1: What concerns did you have in hindsight about the placement of your piece? What are you planning to keep in mind for the placement of your work for Thesis 2? What qualities do you think “artify” an artwork?

he has a morality switch that was installed in his body by the doctor who made him immortal (dr carmilla, so she picked up his corpse from space after he got tossed into space (he was a doctor on a highly religious planet and he somehow necromanced a priest who was dead and his daughter begged brian to help, and eventually got shot into space by said planet’s citizens with his own inventions) and then since all of him was frozen except for his heart, she rebuilt him as a robot except for his heart) and the mortality switch is between Means Justify Ends and Ends Justify Means, and hes a good character (moral alignment) which makes it really interesting when he lives on a spaceship full of people who have “committed every crime except for the sex ones” on (presumably) multiple solar systems, and so MJE means he can’t do anything he deems immoral even if its for the greater good, and EJM means he can commit whatever atrocities he needs to establish a greater good, so the getting thrown into the sun part is where he was left on a space station (that had artifial gravity, think a massive cylinder that’s orbiting a star, and the interior walls are the ‘surface’), and the original creators of the space station cut off contact with the space station (fort galfridian) either on purpose or on accident (we dont know why contact was cut), and so after a couple generations of the people on board, the people didn’t know they were on a space station, and thought it was legitimately what the world was like (and theres nothing outside of it) and so theres a sun inside the station (side note, there was controversy inside the band internally over what shape the sun was, a tube sun that runs the length of the space station with a rotating shutter for the day/night cycle made more sense but one of the members continually insisted on a orbit sun *jonny* and so there is one man who preaches a orbular sun even though tube sun is superior) so anyways brian was left hanging upside down from something inside a room with a great round table and the townspeople on fort galfridian (they dont know they’re on a space station also the original creators never finished building fort galfridian) use that room n stuff, the plot of the album is that fort galfridian is slowly descending into the (real) sun due to a decaying orbit, so brian prophesises a couple things to 3 people, he tells gawain to stop being racist (theres a group who also initially came from the original crew of fort galfridian, but they live on the outer rings (lower floors) of the station, and since the radiation shielding is Fucked TM after a couple of generations, so they are shrivled and husks and so gawain is racist towards these people since he once was travelling with some people, and their cart broke down (oh yeah this is all like a cowboy/western kinda setting on a space station), and they sent gawain to go get help, but when he got back they were already dead, and the saxons (oh yeah the lower floor people are called saxons) ate the corpses partially (since the saxons have a cannablistic society, nothing goes to waste in the saxons) and its unclear if they were killed by the heat/dehydration, saxons, or raiders, anyways also the star fort galfridian is orbiting is called avalon, anyways brian tells gawain to stop being racist and gawain tells him to fuck off. brian tells arthur that his son still lives, and to trust him (so arthur’s son is transmasc, and he was originally on that cart that the saxons eventually ate. he was taken in as he was just a child by the saxons, and grew up among them. his name is mordred), but obviously arthur doesnt know he has a son, he thinks he only has a daughter, and its assumed that brian was on MJE the entire time on fort galfridian, so he couldnt out mordred, anyways so the third guy brian talks to while being hanged is galahad, whos a religious preacher, and he tells galadah to sit in the chair that kills people, (the fandom is pretty sure that galahad was just really gay for brian/merlin and thats why he did it) and so the chair that kills

people, (the fandom is pretty sure that galahad was just really gay for brian/merlin and thats why he did it) and so the chair that kills people is actually called a siege seat and it uploads all the information/data collected by the space station’s sensors to someone’s mind, and the information overload kills them/drives them mad, so galahad sits in the chair and it reveals to him that theres a login key in the lower dephths of the station, and it could activate engines to save them from falling into the star (key note, they still dont know its a space station, he thinks this is a religious thing (a line in his song is “your soul is connected (to the world you’re in)” but i keep changing it to “your soul is connected to the leg bone” and its becoming a fuckin problem), so he is trying to get people on a journey, and eventually arthur and his two lovers (lancalot and guinevere) go with him, and eventually they find the key (GRAIL), but its guarded by automated turrets which can still shoot, and galahad, sure of his religious faith, walks directly into firing range and doesnt stop walking until the turrets click dry in a really dramatic scene anyways back in the town (its called camelot) so morderd and gawain are arguing since mordred wants to make peace with the saxons, and gawain obv doesnt want to, but mordred eventually brings the leader of the saxons to make peace with camelot and gawain, and it almost has a happy ending, except that a saxon sees a scorpion about to bite mordred and kills it with her knife, but gawain sees the weapon and shoots her, and it ends in a bloodbath with everyone in the town and every saxon dead except for mordred (and the three lovers looking for the GRAIL), anyways they enter the room, and find the original captain of fort galfridian in cryosleep from ages ago, and they kill him. the GRAIL interface then asks for them to select one person to be captain and theres a conflict where they all want power even though they’ve constantly ruled as three, but then love wins and arthur designates himself captain with lancalot and guinevere’s blessing, but then mordred comes in (after the bloodbath outside that none of them knew about since they were looking for the GRAIL), and shoots guinevere and lancalot dead, and incapacitates his father arthur, and they both talk, and it ends in mordred placing his father in the cryosleep lifepod, and shooting him into the void of space, anyways mordred activates the engines and shoots the space station into the sun (btw brian is immortal, and so hes still alive and he gets shot into the sun too, and also arthur is functionally immortal since the lifepod sustains him, he will be alive but sleeping until someone finds himself)

Reading this letter based off of Critical Role Season 2, Episode 71.

Now I sometimes have my own AU (Alternative Universe) where if I was a nerdy ass voice actor and if I was on Critical Role playing Dungeons & Dragons as my character, Alexander (Alex, Xander or Ale) Flixotide a human artifier. I think if he got a letter like that from Calianna and wanted to write back I think it would go like this...

Dear Cali,

First of all, I want to say is “Thank you for the letter.” Normally society dictates that I should at least reply to your letter but I tend to find it hard as I’m not much of a writer you see; so I tend to rely on someone else to write it out for me... but I think my foster Mum would bust my ass if I don’t personally write the letter myself (my foster Dad in the other hand would probably gets away with it scott free) so here goes 😅.

Funny enough I should be the one thanking you because you pretty much made me take a long hard look at myself; when you, Beau and Caleb where having that huge argument over that Bowl of Tiamat it was like being locked in a small room seeing myself for the first time... a younger self (like 16 or 17 and saw how fucked up I was... I wanted that pain to go away but instead... I was forced to watch myself); when I saw you Cali, I saw the naïveté that I once had when I first started out. When I was looking at Celeb I saw the ambition that I had and I would have done ANYTHING to get the results that I wanted (even if it means I hurting other people along the way) and when I saw Beau, I pretty much saw the lack of authority that I once had towards other people... those three aspects were the things that got me into a world of trouble. It was such an eye opener for me.

Back at Tal’dori I had to grow up... as I didn’t have much of a childhood, I lost my Mum at the age of 8 so I had to become self sufficient at the age of 12 looking after my brother Nathan and my so-called sperm doner of a ‘Dad’ and when I received the terrible news that Nathan died by accident by group of mercenaries, I was heartbroken and to add insult to injury my ‘Dad’ kicked me out of the house in Emon, because I had enough of putting up with his crap. I was so angry at that I wanted what the world owes me, so I did stupid things to get what I want. I guess what I am trying to say is that I used to be a lot like you, I found it hard to deal with assholes people so I never had much friends growing up... only a select few that I could count on one hand. 😁🤚

Shaun (although he gave me a new home, he taught me that having a creative outlet is way better than a destructive one),

Kynan (taught me that there are people out there who will smash your dreams, but you should never let go of them)

Theros (gave me a new purpose in life and to remind myself that I am human).

Because I had suffered enough loss for one lifetime, I found it hard to open up to other people, I push people away because I never wanted ‘friends’ nor did I want to be a part of their ‘family’. I just found it easy to build a wall around myself so I won’t feel exposed and go though with all those emotions again so I wouldn’t get hurt... I felt that a Warforged (construct) has more emotions than I do.

When I first came to Wildemount I was all alone in a new continent and it was pretty scary so I thought I’d work as a member of the City Watch in Zadash (in memory of my late brother because I don’t want anyone else to go though the same pain that I’ve been through.) When my 3 year trail was up I realised that being a soldier wasn’t my calling in life, I did love to help people out with their problems as a freelancer, I’m no hero but I’ll do what I can with the best of my abilities as an artificer... there are things that I can fix, but repairing a broken heart is difficult.

Being with the Mighty Nein has somewhat have given me a second chance to reinvent myself as I used to be such an asshole back at Tal’dori; I failed as a big brother (and sometimes I worry if I failed as a son). But looking at myself then and now... I definitely saw a huge difference within me, I feel more aware and considerate of people’s feelings, I take time to listen instead of being brash and reckless and I’m less angry at the world. I hope there is something or someone waiting for me after this conflict on Wildemount is over, as I want to return to Tal’dori someday as I have made a couple of promises that I made for myself... it’s kind of hazy but I could think I could remember one of them (I can’t put my finger on it) but I am not sure what the other one is... I eventually hope that I could remember.
