God it's so genuinely crazy that Arthur started the podcast with no one but as his story goes on he becomes more of a bleeding heart. As he befriends and slowly trusts more people he gains more weaknesses. And that has to make him tougher and meaner because if he falters then he'll let the water level rise too much and he'll be forced to watch everyone he cares about die.

Burning the letter so maybe Oscar can escape Kayne's wrath is a diabolical take. I want to think that's the main reason he got up. Because if he didn't then it would mean horrible things for Marie and Oscar and maybe Noel.

Arthur needs to keep going so he can see Oscar again isnt even my cope nearly as much as Kayne already established he would kill every version of every person arthur and john love until they ends of time it is so much more tragic than that Arthur needs to burn the letter to keep going so Kayne doesnt hurt Oscar

oh i'm so glad you asked :D

malevolent is a horror podcast based on lovecraftian mythos by harlan guthrie, who not only writes, edits, soundscapes, and composes the entire thing, he also voices every single character, by some force of alchemy i don't claim to understand.

the show is about arthur lester, a 1930s private investigator who is english but lives in arkham, massachusetts. he is simultaneously the saddest, wettest cat you'll ever meet, the most terrifying badass with a thirst for violence, the hugest cunt, and the kindest soul who refuses to give up on hope no matter what.

it opens with arthur (temporarily) unable to remember who or where he is. he's completely blind. a voice speaks to him, gentle but totally inhuman. the voice is inside his head, and tells arthur that his eyes belong to it now. there's a dead body at arthur's feet.

there's only so much i can explain without big spoilers, but basically, a book was sent to arthur's office, and when arthur opened this book, an entity from another world was released into him, where it took control of his sight. the entity can't leave of its own volition, and in fact isn't sure who or what it is either. they have no choice but to work together to figure out who sent the book and why, if they ever hope to be able to separate again.

things, of course, aren't that simple. arthur is now wanted for murder, and as arthur starts chasing leads, otherwordly things start chasing him back, including a powerful elder god known as the king in yellow.

arthur spends a month in a coma after being stabbed; when he wakes up, the entity - who has been awake and alone the entire time - tells him that the kind nurse who spoke to them every day called them 'john doe' and the entity... rather liked the sound of it. he asks to be called john.

arthur and john are both incredibly stubborn assholes who fight and bicker more often than not, who both tend to lash out and hurt each other when they're angry or afraid, but as they're forced to cooperate, as john learns about humanity through both arthur's eyes and arthur's extensions of kindness, they grow to care for each other. they grow to trust each other, even after they've betrayed each other.

they grow to love each other. it's explicitly not romantic and never will be, by harlan's statements, but it's also explicitly love. (i will die on the aromantic arthur hill.) they grow to become one whole, fucked up, multiply-divorced, utterly devoted symbiotic being, no longer desperate to separate but to keep each other. they are the dearest, most codependent, most bitchy, most beloved of friends.

truly terrible things happen along the way; the podcast definitely is not for the squeamish. arthur is more scar tissue than not by now, and really should NOT still be alive after how many times he's been punctured. it's genuinely quite scary at times, and genuinely heartbreaking in others.

but i think its key message is that no matter what we've been through, we must cling to hope with bloody fingers, and we must keep going, even if all we can do is crawl. no matter what we've been before, we decide who we're going to be today, and no one gets to tell us otherwise. love and self-determination is what will save us.

and just from a technical standpoint, i think the podcast is brilliant. because arthur is blind, john has to narrate what they are seeing and doing, which also allows us, the audience, to 'see' what's happening, and lets us feel like we're in arthur's shoes. when john gasps in horror at what he's seeing, we feel the same dread as arthur, because we don't know what's happening until john describes it to us. harlan's voice acting is truly astounding, both in the emotion he can convey and in just how many dozens of voices and accents he's able to pull off, often without listeners ever realizing it's all the same person.

another fun element is that because harlan is a big ttrpg guy, he allows patreons to actually vote on arthur's choices in the podcast, and he adapts the story to follow those decisions. (in some early episodes, this was represented by a rolling dice sound effect.) he does have a story planned, and set to end in season 6 (we're currently in season 5), but i think that level of audience participation is pretty cool.

so yeah, that's the thing i've been obsessed with for months! if you can't handle scary or gross situations then it probably isn't for you, but otherwise i very highly recommend it. 🫶

«Arthur Lester lived a normal life as a 1920s private investigator. Or, at least, as normal of a life as you can lead when you live in Arkham, which is basically the cult capital of America, and when you have a history of personal tragedy so intensly horrible we can't even afford to get into it right now.

Enter John Doe. Or, the entity who will choose to be called John Doe. You see, when Arthur listened to a suspicious voice that told him to open that suspicious book, he didn't realize that he was agreeing to be possessed by… something. Even John doesn't remember who or what he is, anymore. He's been in the Dark World for too long.

The possession doesn't take entirely, though. In fact, the only part of Arthur's body that John ends up being in control of is Arthur's eyes. Arthur is now entirely separated from them, and has gone entirely blind, necessitating John to need to see for the both of them.

This is not only a great conceit for a podcast to have a built in narrator, it's also a recipie for two people who could have been opposed to each other to have a necessarily collaborative and incredibly intimate relationship.

John and Arthur's relationship defies real world definition, because no two people can ever be intimate in the same ways they are. Their fight to keep themselves safe, their struggle for control, eventually becomes a fight for each other, a mutual love that they would each give up absolutely EVERYTHING for. They are together, living in the same body, because they choose each other above all else. Arthur learns to be vulnerable, to trust someone and open up his heart again. John learns about empathy, humanity, the kind of being that he wants to be instead of what he was before, and he credits Arthur with showing him that.

And their relationship is not romantic, no matter what you may find on AO3 (just ask the creator of the podcast, lol). And still, the word "love" is used to describe how they feel about each other. They are devoted to each other, and, necessarily, partners in everything. No matter how many heated and destructive arguments they get into (what the fandom jokingly calls "divorces", and expect to see at least once every few episodes), they always come back together. More than any other pairing, they are defined by a queer love that cannot be put into socially acceptable boxes. They're something else entirely.»

malevolent was kind of a frustrating listen bc the only other horror podcasts i listen to regularly, like tma or mabel, all seem to do really well by their inspirations without making it feel like they’re taking directly from them, whereas malevolent is more like. i’m going to make my OCs experience the lovecraft mythos. but at the same time i am suuuuuch a massive sucker for a forced codependency involving the blending and splitting of consciousnesses. like the very SECOND i realized that arthur was going to be forced to rely on john to interact with the world. zoo wee mama !

ohohohohoho it's always a good day hwen i get to tell ppl about malevolent. it's a horror fiction podcast about a detective who wakes up without his sight or memories and tied to an eldritch entity. they have to work together to figure out what's going on, find a way to separate themselves from each other, and survive a whole host of monsters in the meantime. the entity, also called john doe, describes arthur's surroundings since he ended up with control over his eyes, leaving arthur completely blind. arthur has control over the rest of the body and uses the information john gives him to investigate and put the clues together. also obviously theyre really weird and codependent abt it 10/10 it's a good podcast id highly recommend it

imagine, if you will, a fiction podcast with absolutely no romantic subplot. that podcast exists and it's called malevolent.

arthur lester is incredibly and undeniably aroallo lovequeer coded, having previously been in a romantic relationship with someone he canonically was not in love with, but merely "liked".

his relationship with john doe is explicitly and canonically a friendship. before john gets his name, arthur exclusively refers to him as "friend", and even after this is language the two regularly use about each other.

they're codependent. on a very literal level, as the only way for them to survive is to work together. throughout the podcast, you can hear their dynamic developing as they get used to being stuck together, and, eventually, they reach a point where the idea of being seperated distresses them both.

as a romance averse aroallo, when i started malevolent, i was dreading the idea of the two of them becoming romantic, as fiction podcast protagonists often do. the relief i felt when they didn't was incredible, and after that worry was erased, i grew to love their relationship together so much more.

malevolent means so much to me as a lovequeer aromantic. the fact that no, actually, they really are friends, and that means more than any romance between them ever could. the story is infinitely more impactful when they're "just" friends.
