ZIEGFELD FOLLIES

The shooting schedule ran between April 10 and August 18, 1944, with retakes plus additional segments filmed on December 22, 1944 and then between January 25 and February 6, 1945. The film was first proposed in 1939.

Synopsis ~ We meet a grayed, immaculately garbed Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. in Paradise (his diary entry reads "Another heavenly day"), where he looks down upon the world and muses over the sort of show he'd be putting on were he still alive.

Lucille Ball ('Here's to the Ladies') is appearing in her 64th film since coming to Hollywood in 1933.

Fred Astaire ('Here's to the Ladies' / Raffles in 'This Heart of Mine' / Tai Long in 'Limehouse Blues’ / Gentleman in 'The Babbit and the Bromide') also appeared with Lucille Ball in Roberta (1935), Top Hat (1935), and Follow the Fleet (1936). His name was mentioned twice on “I Love Lucy.”

‘FOLLIES’ TRIVIA

Sidney Guilaroff, Lucille Ball’s hair dresser, who takes responsibility for her famous ‘golden red’ for this movie, becoming her trademark color.

Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.

The horse ridden by Lucille Ball is the Lone Ranger's Silver!

Lucille Ball was actually fired by Ziegfeld from his road company production of Rio Rita in the 1930s.

In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.

Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.

Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).

Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.

Ziegfeld Girl Eve Whitney appeared on “I Love Lucy” episode “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15). She used her own name for the character.

The Telegraph Boy in "A Sweepstakes Ticket" Arthur Walsh - appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) as Arthur ‘King Cat’ Walsh. He teaches Lucy how to jitterbug.

The first Judge in the “Pay the Two Dollars” James Crehan also played the Police Detective on “I Love Lucy in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) first aired on October 31, 1955.

Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964. At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.

Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.

In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness. This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.

Ziegfeld’s follies began on Broadway, so it was appropriate that the show featured past and future Broadway musical stars:

PM TO RECEIVE REPORT ON HOW BARBADIANS VIEW THE ISLAND 50 YEARS AFTER INDEPENDENCE - Government is to receive a report on Tuesday outlining what citizens want to reclaim, retain or discard, in keeping with the questions posed by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart last year during this island’s 50th anniversary of political independence from Britain. Barbados At 50: The Barbados National Values Assessment 2016 Report, was undertaken by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies and will be presented to Stuart during an Evening of Appreciation, on Tuesday. The report is expected to inform Government of the views of the population in relation to where “we are as a people at this juncture of our 50th anniversary as an independent nation”. Stuart has said he is eagerly looking forward to receiving the report and having a national dialogue on where the country should go, particularly in light of several recent incidents among young people that have led to concern by Barbadians, and generated widespread discussion. In January last year, Stuart had asked Barbadians: What are those features of Barbadian life that we have lost and that we need to reclaim? What are those features of Barbadian life that we have not lost and need to retain? and What are those features of Barbadian life we have not lost but we have to try and discard as quickly as possible? NO WAY OUT - They are bathing in rainwater, huddled in the dark and they want out. This is the story of siblings, Sabrina, 33, and Shane Weekes, 29, who have been trapped on the Dutch side of St Maarten since September 6 when Hurricane Irma devastated the island. The Category 5 system, packing winds of 185 miles per hour, left 60 per cent of the homes in ruins. Seven people were reported to have died on the French side of St Martin and four on the Dutch side. Yesterday, the Weekes’ mother Vicki, who lives at Clapham Park, Christ Church, was at her wits’ end as she tried to secure the safe return of her two children. (DN)

OBESITY CHECK-UP - As the majority of children return to school this week, the Ministry of Health is once again looking to tackle the problem of obesity. It wants funding to carry out a follow-up Health Of The Nation survey after the last, five years ago, revealed damning statistics about the health of the island’s children. In 2012, the survey, done in 26 schools, revealed that a third of the students were overweight and almost 15 per cent were obese. It also found that almost 75 per cent drank at least one sweet drink each day, but only 28 per cent got the recommended one hour of exercise. Senior Medical Health Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr Kenneth George, said while the ministry had not yet gone back into the field to do a follow-up he did not believe the figures had changed. ‘MORE TO WEED THAN SMOKING IT’ - As yet another Caribbean territory signalled its intention to decriminalise small amounts of cannabis, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, is again making the case for Barbados to go that route. Economist Jeremy Stephen said he also believed the crime troubling the island could have been significantly less had it made the move years ago. Stephen, along with chairman of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council, Dr Hensley Sobers, was discussing the topic, Driving Economic Participation Of Youth, at Cave Hill Friday evening. It was hosted by the UWI Youth Development Programme. Following a decision taken by Jamaica in 2015, the Bermuda government announced days ago it would introduce legislation to decriminalise cannabis possession if the amount was fewer than seven grammes. FOGGING SCHEDULE FOR SEPTEMBER 11-15 - The Ministry of Health’s Vector Control Unit’s efforts to control the spread of dengue and other mosquito borne diseases continues this week when a number of districts across Barbados will be fogged. On Monday, September 11, the following districts in St James will be fogged: Oxnards Heights, Husbands Heights, Husbands Development, Ricks Road, Orchid Drive, Tulip Drive, Croton Drive, Blue Bell Drive, Oxnards Heights and the environs. The following day, Tuesday, September 12, the team will move to St Peter and spray Castle Tenantry, Gays, Mount No.1, Mount No.2, Boscobelle, Boscobelle Terrace, Collins, Collins Tenantry and surrounding districts. On Wednesday, September 13, the Vector Control Unit team will visit St Thomas and carry out the fogging operations in Cane Garden Park, Ginger Lily Drive, South View Drive, Canewood Road, Bibby’s Lane with Avenues, Proute with Avenues and the environs. On Thursday, September 14, the team will visit Christ Church and spray Atlantic Shores, Coral Drive, Pearl Drive, Spring Terrace, Light House Lane, Oyster Crescent, Seaside Drive, Ocean Mist Close and surrounding districts. The Vector Control team Unit will be in St Michael on Friday, September 15, and the areas of concentration will be Two Mile Hill, Haggatt Hall, Barkers Road, Neil’s Tenantry, Rouen Road, Belle Gully, Tichbourne, Howell Cross Road and neighbouring districts. The fogging operations run from 4:30 -7:30 p.m. each day and residents are reminded to open their doors and windows to allow the fog to penetrate. Parents are reminded that children should desist from playing in the fog or running behind the fogging machine. (BT)

KNIGHT RIDERS WIN CPL TITLE - You couldn’t have asked for a more dramatic end to the 2017 Caribbean Premier League. Trinbago Knight Riders clinched their second title amid tension and excitement with a three-wicket win against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at the new Brian Lara Cricket Academy yesterday morning. In a gripping contest played out before more than 10 000 fans, the Knight Riders sealed the deal just after 1 a.m. thanks to the heroics of big-hitting Kevon Cooper, whose vital unbeaten 29 off 14 balls at crunch time helped the hosts overhaul a target of 136 with one over remaining. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots looked on course to lift the title for the first time when they reduced Trinbago Knight Riders to 90 for seven after 14.2 overs. (DN)

PRIZES GALORE - Crop Over 2017 will be recorded as one of the most lucrative for stakeholders. Based on the purses of the various competitions, winning participants, as a collective, took home just under a million dollars. Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley, speaking at the Crop Over awards ceremony at Hilton Barbados Saturday night, however, lamented that while preliminary figures showed an increase of “in kind sponsorship, we saw a dip in the monetary contributions. But we thank the returning sponsors and new sponsors to the fold”. There were four cars in the major competitions: Pic-O-De-Crop, Sweet Soca, Party Monarch and in the costume production of Junior Kadooment and Grand Kadooment. (DN)

NCF RETAINING CONTROL OF CROP OVER - Management of Crop Over will not be moved from the National Cultural Foundation, Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley reaffirmed last night against the backdrop of suggestions that the annual festival might have outgrown the NCF. Fellow Cabinet Minister, Richard Sealy, had last month reportedly suggested that this premiere Barbados festival had become too much for NCF and it should be taken over by another entity. But Lashley used the occasion of a Crop Over Awards Ceremony at the Hilton to say that the festival remains firmly under NCF’s control. In spite of what he said was an overall successful 2017 festival, Lashley conceded that some areas saw below par performances. In terms of sponsorship, Lashley said the preliminary figures suggest that whereas there was an increase in the in-kind sponsorship, there was a dip in the monetary contributions for the season. ISRILID – GREAT MOTHER, FRIEND - ISRILID GRIFFITH was in a celebratory mood yesterday, a day before becoming Barbados’ next centenarian. She was surrounded by family, friends and church members to celebrate the special occasion at Crab Hill Wesleyan Holiness Church in St Lucy, where she has worshipped and been actively involved for the past 67 years. The packed pews told a story of love and respect for the matriarch. The mother of seven – four of whom were deceased – is also grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 20. She has outlived her three brothers. “My mother who was born on September 11, 1917, is a great mother and friend. She went to school at St Swithun’s Girls in those days and on leaving school, worked as a kitchen assistant at Cluffs Plantation in St Lucy, and in her latter days as a domestic in Speightstown, St Peter,” said daughter Sharon Griffith.
