For this piece, The Altar of Sacrifice, I started with the desire to visually explore the symbols found on the Great Schema worn by Orthodox monks. Using digital collage techniques, I wanted to represent them in a way that doesn't confine them to an isolated "sacred" space but brings them closer to our everyday lives, no matter who we are or where we find ourselves.

Every detail tells a story. The cross inscribed with IC XC NIKA (Jesus Christ Conquers) is not just a sign of divine victory but also of the personal struggles each of us carries. The crown of thorns, the spear, and the sponge remind us of suffering and humility, but also of acceptance. The ladder symbolizes the inner ascent, the constant struggle between falling and rising, while the pillar speaks of perseverance and the trials we face. The rooster, seemingly a simple symbol, reflects the fragility of our faithfulness and those moments when we forget who we truly are.

When I started creating this painting, I really wanted to make something special. I was searching for the right references, but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. Then I remembered the famous works of old masters—one of them was Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. I wanted to create something similar in composition. At that time, my artistic style was just starting to take shape, and its main feature was often a cute doll-like figure with a realistic face.

Somehow, I felt that such an innocent, delicate, and vulnerable being needed to be held by something completely opposite to create a stark contrast, making her the centerpiece of the painting. I chose the Reaper. I decided he would be the most fitting for this role.

When I had painted most of the artwork, and it was clear who was holding the girl, a client came to me for a tattoo session. At that time, I was working as a tattoo artist, and I didn’t know that she had cancer. She was in the final stage of the disease and could no longer walk. Her husband carried her to the second floor, where she saw my painting.

I felt slightly uneasy, even uncomfortable, but her words froze me. She wanted me to tattoo that painting on her because, as she said, she didn’t have much time left anyway. At first, without thinking too long, I told her, “Let’s let this one heal first, and then we’ll decide how to proceed with the next step.” I said the idea wasn’t bad at all.

But after she left, I realized that I would never, ever tattoo this artwork on her. Despite her seeing herself in my painting and recognizing how death was already holding her in its arms, I believe in energy. I have a very strong energy force myself, and honestly, I was afraid to tattoo this painting on her. I feared that I might unintentionally accelerate her departure from this world.

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. I wanted to draw for the cause- one that has affected not only me, but countless of other people. There are a few subtle nods in the art itself about resilience and healing-- things that take a long while to do for those who have been affected.

The art may be a bit late in the month, but the message is always right on time.

The Issuhiro deer seems to be a longstanding symbol for many things in Issuhiro. I know for me, I drift towards the animal in more symbolic artworks.

This is slightly more stylized than how I regularly would finish up a drawing, but seemed perfect for Sketchtember. It also reminds me of how I used to 'set'/stage are several years ago too. I used HB, 2B and 4B graphite pencil (mix of my fairly old proArts and more recent Faber-Castell), along with watercolor pencils. Some mixed media applications were used as well.
