2023
This is my copy of the Ice Age Essential Guide (featuring 1, 2 & 3).
It is a movie guide book written by Glenn Dakin. It was published by Dorling Kindersley (DK books) in 2009 following the release of the third film. The book features 64 pages.
In this post I will talk about the two menacing aquatic dinosaurs from Ice Age 2 The Meltdown, Cretaceous (an Ichthyosaur) and Maelstrom (a Pliosaur).
Cretaceous and Maelstrom are first seen frozen in a block of ice during the waterpark migration scene. These two have spent millions of years trapped in an ice berg since the Mesozoic era, but due to the warming weather they're beginning to thaw out and are very hungry. Along with the vultures they are seeking to eat all the mammals they can during the flood. Stu (a Glyptodon) becomes their first victim.
They work together as a team to bring down their prey. Both reptiles split up to try and hunt the herd in the movie and Scrat in the games. They can also defend each other for example If either Cretaceous or Maelstrom get hurt the other stands in to attack. Cretaceous is shown to have more strength and courage to take on Manny the Mammoth, whilst Maelstrom tries to take on the rest of the herd.
Their fate at the end of the Meltdown involves a fight with Manny who is trying to save Ellie from the cave. As they attempt to attack him, Manny wedges the tree trunk into the rock. He quickly gets out of the way as they bite onto it instead and are then taken down by the rocks as they crumble down saving Ellie in the process. Both reptiles are then sucked into a whirlpool as the ice dam breaks open thanks to Scrat. As a result, these two reptiles end up becoming a snack for the Mini Sloths (in the essential guide) and the Lone Gunslinger Vultures (in the movie storybook).
Cretaceous and Maelstrom also appear in the video game adaption of Ice Age 2 and are featured in Scrats Nutty Adventure (2019) as bosses. 3D rendered models which were used for the Scrat's Nutty Adventure videogame can be found here:
https://aaronhumphreys35.artstation.com/projects/w8gWa5
In the videogame of Ice Age 2, Scrat navigates through Maelstrom's digestive system to escape when he is eaten along with his acorn.
Cretaceous and Maelstrom's sound effects were a mixture of whales, tigers growling and human voices, which was used to give an eerie quality. In an early script, both reptiles could talk but this was removed from the movie as the studio didn't want too many characters with speaking roles.
The Art of Ice Age book published by Titan Books and co-written by Tara Bennet, features an early concept of Cretaceous and Maelstrom revealing that they were going to be alongside another character known as a Axolotl. All three characters are called 'The Villainous Trio' in the art book. The 3D sculptures were created by Michael Defeo and character drawings were done by Peter De Sève.
A Axolotl is only featured in the videogame of the second movie. Here is a screenshot featuring an Axloti in the Mud Bog stage alongside Scrat. Image from Sierra Chest.

More recently, Cretaceous and Maelstrom are depicted chasing the herd in cave paintings in the opening sequence of the sixth Ice Age spin-off movie called 'The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild' which was created and released by Walt Disney Studios in January 2022.
Disney's 'The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild' was followed later by 'Ice Age: Scrat Tales', a collection of short films produced by Disney with the help of a small team of Blue Sky Studios animators. Scrat Tales was Blue Sky Studios final farewell production following the studios closure.
© All Ice Age material is owned by the Walt Disney company under the Walt Disney Studios division. Walt Disney acquired Blue Sky Studios & 20th Century Fox in 2019.

The next installment of my Walter Family Portraits is done!
We have the original inventor, creator of our beloved Singing Musical Automatons, Col. Peter A. Walter I. Based off of the original art from Sam Luke (@samhears) in the Steam Powered Giraffe comic and a photo of David Michael Bennet
Color pallet was partially chosen by popular vote here on tumblr using the poll function
Acrylic paint on a 8x10 inch stretched canvas
WIP photos under the cut as always
Tumblr media
The canvas was originally a test of the new blues I had bought, and was going to be used for the Sky Shark painting, but I ended up going with a larger size for that so it's been sitting partially painted since then. On the far left side you can glimpse my skeleton helper Darla, and part of my work surface is the sketch for my Lily Airheart painting (still in progress)
Tumblr media
The very initial sketch, transferred over using graphite tracing paper, the canvas wasn't completely square so I decided to try making it look like an oval frame over a photo instead of a square and trying to find a frame that looked good with it
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the blue had to go, at least for the bits of the painting that wasn't background, so it was time to start laying down some base colors and solidifying my choice to go for half-comic half-realism
Tumblr media
Didn't really know what I was doing and ended up using Yellow Ocher for one of my base colors, I changed my mind on this much later after sleeping on the decision for a few nights. The yellow just wasn't working right with the Burnt Sienna for this
Tumblr media
My reference photo and some more base colors, nearly ready to move onto shadows and other tones
Tumblr media
Lips??? How do people paint lips?
Tumblr media
Starting to regret the yellow, but forging on hoping that it'll end up looking ok
Tumblr media
Relising that the process isn't going to fix this and that the yellow needs to go, starting to paint over it with a combination of Unbleached Titanium and Burnt Sienna
Tumblr media
Just before I realized that I forgot his coat buttons, and a few details left to finalize. The little gold frills weren't popping as nicely as I hoped so I painted them over in black before adding a gold wash over it to make it look like worn and old gold

Is this a video about Breadtube? Is it a reaction video to Philosophy Tube / Abigail Thorn and her video about coming out as trans? Is it a reaction video to myself? Is there such a thing as objectivity? Is there hope for joy in the wake of postmodernism? Can YouTubers really fill the role of educators? If not, can I still join in the party of making fun of conservative nonsense from Ben Shapiro and PragerU? Please?

Battle B-Daman Lost Lore 1: Joshua’s Family
I will be commencing a small series of posts called ‘Lost Lore’, focusing on things mentioned on Inuki Eiji’s old, now-defunct blog, that weren’t mentioned elsewhere.
Inuki would often take art requests from his fans, and many a time discuss extra aspects of Batobi’s canon. One such part of this was his accepting of fans suggestions in regards to relatives, and coming up with more information about their families on his own.
I believe his blog is where it was once stated that Michael and Grace were the names of Gray and Liena’s father and mother, and thus where their children had taken their middle names from. This page, however, is lost to time and cannot be confirmed, but as even Japanese fans seem to agree on this fact, I choose to accept it.
But this post is about another family, specifically the family of Joshua. While Cain’s familial relationship (at least with his father) was an important plot point, we know little and less of Joshua’s... in canon, that is. Thanks to Inuki’s website, we are able to know that he had two loving parents and a little brother! And that’s who I will be discussing in my post.
Tumblr media
From top left to bottom right: Jade*  (ジェイド) , Angelina*  (アンジェリーナ) , Abel* (アベル), and Joshua. Their surname is Bennet* ( ベネット). *Transliterations by me.
While little was said of the parents, Joshua’s brother Abel is somewhat of a different story. Abel is 12 years old, standing at 156m / 5'1 and weighing 45kg /99lbs. His blood type is A, and his birthday is on April 2nd.
Tumblr media
While little is explicitly said on Abel's personality, it can be inferred from Eiji Inuki's illustrations of him that Abel is a typical, happy child, but has a protective streak towards Joshua, and warns Cain to not push him too hard.
Tumblr media
It is implied that Abel does not get along with or like Cain, although this sentiment does not seem to be reciprocated, and Cain seems more confused by Abel's actions than anything else. Joshua is often seen being the mediator between them when they do argue, or when Abel gets angry at Cain.
Tumblr media
Despite Inuki not having known the Biblical reference of Cain’s name when conceptualising him, it can be inferred that Abel’s name was chosen deliberately to play towards it. Abel’s dislike towards Cain can be seen as a darkly humorous nod towards this, as Biblical Cain is known for murdering his brother Abel. It also fits in well with his brother Joshua, whose name also has Biblical theming.
All art by Inuki Eiji.

Our grandnephew, Maddox, the son of our niece, Autumn, is three months old now!  He is SO cute and I’m SO excited to meet him in a few weeks when I go to Bethel, in Maine, where they live, to visit family and friends there.
Tumblr media
Autumn is a wonderful mother to him and to his “sister”, their dog Nova.

Today I took Maple for a walk again in her family’s neighborhood and saw the cutest mailbox that I just had to capture for posterity.  Hobie LOVED trains and built many tracks for his toy trains when he was little and I hope Maple inherits both his and MY fondness for trains so we can take many trips together by train when she is older.

ZOOM has opened up such a big world to everyone which can be accessed from their homes.  Today I watched Denver Mayor Michael Hancock give his “state of the city” address and it was very interesting.  I think he has been a good mayor and done a lot to help revitalize the city.  His focus has been on safety and housing, two things which are very important to people in any city, especially given the violence created by the gun culture in our country and the housing crisis created by the inequity in the economy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like Denver a lot and try to spend as much time as I can there to enjoy the art, culture, and everything this beautiful city has to offer.  I hope Denver elects another good mayor in its next election, because Mayor Hancock can’t run again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other political representatives from Colorado who support the mayor’s vision and policies featured in this photo are our U.S. Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper.  I have supported all these law makers and leaders for many years financially and by working for their elections and I’m proud that Colorado has so many good people working on behalf of the interests of the people who live here.

“A Cherokee elder was teaching his young grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil- he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt and ego. The other is good- he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you—and inside every other person, too." The boy thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The elder simply replied, "The one you feed.”    ~ Tsalagi Tale
