How do you become a 'Body without Organs'? An illustrated manual and a visual dictionary

"This project is an illustrated manual and a visual dictionary for the text by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari - "November 28: 1947: How Do You Make Yourself a Body without Organs?" in Their book ' A Thousand Plateaus'. This philosophical text from the 80' contains a vast amount of graphic description on how to Become A 'Body without Organs' which is a core concept in their work. The challenge for me was to first understand the terms and the ideas in the text, and then to Translate them into a visual representation. The illustration and the quotes have a matching numeral order and they guide the reader Through main ideas in the text. This work was created as a seminar in my M.A studies at the Interdisciplinary Program in the Arts, The Yolanda and David Katz Faculty of the Arts, Tel Aviv University 2016."

Jamie Lee Curtis Sparks Uproar Over Framed Photo of Naked Child in Box | PetaPixel

Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis has deleted an Instagram post after facing backlash for her choice of photography wall art.

Curtis posted a picture from inside her house last week showing “beautiful Pollack chairs” from her latest movie Everything Everywhere All at Once in her office.

Reactions in the post’s comments and on social media were largely focused on the strange framed photo on the wall behind the desk and chairs, as it appeared to show a naked child inside a plastic tub.

Critics questioned the actress’s taste in art, calling the photo “creepy” and “sick.” Others on social media drew connections between the art and everything from Jeffrey Epstein to the recently Balenciaga BDSM scandal.

Curtis quickly responded by deleting the Instagram post, but social media continued to swirl. Today, Curtis took to her social media channels to address the matter.

“Last week I posted a picture of some chairs that included a photograph on the wall by an artist that was gifted to me 20 years ago,” she writes.

“I understand it has disturbed some people. As I have said, I am a truth teller so here’s the truth. It’s a picture of a child, taken by her mother, of her playing in their backyard in a tub of water. Nothing more, nothing less. I took down the post because I didn’t want to keep something up that upset anyone.”

The Photographer Behind the Photo

The controversial wall art is a print of a photo by American photographer Betsy Schneider. It’s from her series Sweet is the Swamp, a collection of candid photos taken mainly of the photographer’s children. The picture that Curtis owns is called The Tub and was taken in 2003. The image shows Schneider’s daughter in a small plastic box filled with water.

Schneider was one of around 175 individuals around the world that was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011.

Past Controversies

Photographer Betsy Schneider documents transformations of individuals and families over time and place, according to her website.

Her work has been exhibited in art galleries and Schnieder has released a book entitled To Be Thirteen.

Schnieder’s work has caused controversy in the past. In 2004, police in London were called to her exhibition at the Spitz gallery after concerns were raised over photos of the artist’s naked daughter. A visitor to the exhibition considered the images to be pornographic and the exhibition was shut down by the gallery.

She told The Guardian that she did not consider the work to be obscene when seen as a whole.

“The aim of these pictures is not to provoke or to shock. The idea is to show time, change and growth,” she said at the time.

Update 1/20: This article has been amended after the photographer reached out to PetaPixel claiming that she never said her photos might be considered pornographic. This was misquoted at the time and PetaPixel has removed the quote.

I know there's lots of competition between movies these days, but it was always very weird that Jamie Lee Curtis so pointedly and repeatedly kept targeting the Benedict Cumberbatch-led film, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. To date, I'd never seen any so-called professional actor/actress behave that way.

There was, indeed ZERO reason to do this, UNLESS...!

AT THE WHITNEY, JASPER JOHNS’S COMIC ART HAS LINKS TO HIS SHOP WINDOWS

THE DAILY PIC presents some more thoughts on Jasper Johns's "Alley Oop," from his Whitney retrospective, thanks to some digging by my old friend and colleague David Glenn Dixon, into an image from David Barsalou’s project called Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein. 

As Glenn pointed out, the comic is about how a non-profit (scientific) venture can raise money — grist for my theory (advanced at 4Columns.org) that Johns, at this early moment, is preoccupied with the problem of art and commodity culture. More importantly, Glenn notes that (assuming the comic existed in only one version) Johns went to the trouble of reconfiguring the strip's panels from their original vertical layout into a horizontal. And THAT brings me to an Artforum essay on the painting by Richard Schiff, who notes that "Alley Oop" is a close match for the composition in Johns's big canvas called "Flag on Orange Field." As Schiff doesn't note, that canvas was used as a prop in a 1957 Bonwit Teller window (shown in my other image, from the New School Archives) exactly one year after the same windows featured Johns's "White Flag" — which was the launch pad for my 4Columns article on Johns and capital and John Dewey's Pragmatism. And then there’s Jonathan Katz’s 2009 essay on “Alley Oop” and queer camouflage, where he notes that the painting rhymes with a comic strip included in Robert Rauschenberg’s early combine painting called “Collection” — which, as I’ve discovered, was one window over at Bonwit’s from Johns’s “Orange Flag.”

Schiff’s granular description of “Alley Ooop” is also support for my reading of the painting in the context of Dewey’s focus on the material here-and-now. Schiff speaks of the “intimate physicality” of “Alley Oop” and of how its source image (and therefore Johns’s overpainted version of it) is “designed to be held in the hand.” And he quotes a wildly Deweyan thought from John Cage, about his own very “material” compositions: “Since the sounds were [just] sounds, this gave people hearing them the chance to be people, centered within themselves, where they actually are, not off artificially in the distance as they are accustomed to be, trying to figure out what is being said by some artist by means of sounds.”

Mainly cuz people struggle to pronounce my full name hehe but I also just think it's less of a mouthful. Idk, I honestly really love my name and don't think I'd change it given the chance. When did you join Tumblr and why?: Was going through my emails yesterday and I've been here for a year?? apparently. 1. The ending of Your Lie In April. Idk if any of yall have experienced that, but let me know if you have cuz shared trauma. I was crying so hard, I couldn't breathe. Dry heaving and everything, it was Not Pretty

2. Like literally all of One Day At Time. I know, it's cheesy but that show means a lot to me and I get so emotional watching it cuz I connect to the characters so much. Anything with Elena makes me sob cuz like she's me but also my baby, ya know

3. Um Queer Eye in general but specifically the episode with the gay pastor. That hit close to home on so many levels and boy, was I sobbing the entire time.
