Festival de Cine de Venecia 2019 VIII
Festival de Cine de Venecia 2019 VIII
Tumblr media

Felicia’s Journey - Serial Killer Road Buddy Movie
A Netflix rental that sat for a long time in the queue before eventually making it to the top and our DVD player. Not bad, not great either. I liked some of this director's other films (Sweet Hereafter, Exotica), and, while this one had a nice performance by Hoskins, the movie itself didn't seem to have much suspense, or characters worth caring much about, or mystery, or pathos, or really anything much. The back and forth time sequence, which worked so well in this director's other films, just seems to slow down the barely existent storyline, and seems more like a crutch than an innovation at this point. The villain isn't frightening, or creepy, or menacing in this thriller, just sort of sad. Interesting idea, but after so many distasteful films where the serial killer is almost the 'hero' of the film (Hannibal and their ilk), it seems especially disturbing to be asked to feel empathy and pity for a mass murderer.

08-01-2017 The Adjuster (1991) www.imdb.com/title/tt0101273/
The Adjuster is the fourth feature length film directed by Atom Egoyan. It was with The Adjuster that the Canadian filmmaker started to come to attention outside of Canada, gathering nominations and wins in the festival circuit, well before his 1994 hit Exotica bedazzled audiences. I liked watching The Adjuster, it made me feel a certain way David Lynch and more recently Peter Strickland manage to make me feel as well, and that’s a compliment.
Written by the director, the story tells us about Noah Renders (Elias Koteas), who works for an insurance company, and his wife Hera (Arsinée Khanjian), a film censor who secretly tapes those parts in the films that she deems too shocking for anybody else to see. Noah has secret sexual encounters with his clients (many of which are simultaneously staying in a motel the couple eventually end up in as well), while Hera watches their young son and shows her sister the foul tapes. When one day a strange man named Bubba (Maury Chaykin) appears on their doorstep, their uncomfortably comfortable life take a turn for the worse almost in a Teorema kind of way.
The desolate rural locations, the odd characters, the eerie music, slow conversations and strange happenings; the overall sense of what-the-earth-is-happening-I-like-it is grand in this movie. This should be unsettling, but in some way does Egoyan invite his audience to look further and deeper than what appears at first sight. There is a religious/mythological subtext that is intriguing (Noah as a saviour, as a Robin Hood type of figure, Hera as the jealous wife, Bubba as the devil) to say the least, while the dream-like, surreal and erotic atmosphere pull you further into the movie. While not Egoyan’s best, The Adjuster offers a wonderful movie watching experience.
