Elvis' first LP cover 📀

A LITTLE BACKGROUND STORY ABOUT THE PICTURES USED AS COVERS FOR ELVIS' FIRST LP "ELVIS PRESLEY" RELEASED ON MARCH 23, 1956. All the pictures were taken in 1955.

THE FRONT COVER

Known as the "Tonsil Photo", the picture of Elvis holding his 1955 Martin D-28 guitar (with custom made tooled leather cover with his name "Elvis Presley" blazoned across the front), as used on the front cover for his first RCA LP, was taken on July 31st 1955 in Tampa, Florida, according to Tampa photographer William V. "Red" Robertson, who took the picture.

Colonel Parker hired quite a few different studios and photographers to photograph Elvis in the 50s for commercial purposes. Williams Vernon "Red" Robertson was one of the professional photographers hired by Parker, in his case to photograph a show with Elvis Presley on July 31, 1955. Robertson did field work for his Robertson & Fresh commercial photography studio, a firm active in Tampa from 1932 to 1960. Roberton's business partner, Harry Fresh, processed and printed the images. The "tonsil photo" since taken was extensively used in newspaper and print to promote future shows in the 50s, and due to its use in Elvis' first LP, specially, it's one of the most famous pictures of the King of Rock and Roll.

THE BACK COVER

On November 30th 1955, Elvis and the Colonel flew to New York, where they register at the Hotel Victoria on Fifty-first Street.

On Thursday, December 1st 1955, Elvis and the Colonel met RCA executives, including president Larry Kanaga and publicity director Anne Fulchino, at the RCA's Twenty-fourth Street studio in New York.

JUST SO YOU KNOW: I think there isn't photos of Elvis with RCA's president Larry Kanaga (at least I haven't found one yet) but below is a photograph from another day (in the future) of EP and Anne Fulchino, publicist for RCA Victor's Pop Record Division. Back to December 1st, 1955: A photo shoot was arranged and pictures of Elvis and the Colonel, Elvis and Steve Sholes and Elvis and fellow RCA recording artist Eddy Arnold, who happened to be in New York for a session, were taken in December 1st 1955.

After the pictures with other people, Elvis was photographed by himself... a lot (I mean it). From all the pictures, four of them (posed action shots of Elvis) were used on the back of Elvis' first album.

Arthur Kaufmann began his triptych "Arts and Science Finding Refuge in the USA" in 1939. After several decades' interruption, he finished it in 1964. Ironically, the painting now hangs in the Städtisches Museum Mülheim an der Ruhr, in Germany.

The group portrait shows 38 writers, artists, scientists, composers, and other creative people who found refuge from Hitler in the United States. Lili Arnold -  She is a artist & designer based in Santa Cruz. although she usually focuses on graphic design and illustration, her true passion unfold when printmaking. She fell in love with printmaking during her years in the UCSC art department. She has been able to develop her understanding and appreciation for printmaking methods including lithography, intaglio, relief, and digital printing. She creates very specific designs that appear to compliment each other due to the specific colours she uses, commonly blue, and use of marks can sometimes be very distinctive and alike. I like that she uses simple colour palettes of usually around 3 basic colours that work well together and what seems to be block prints of sea turtles - cant be used as inspiration for myself when creating my own block prints and reflect on her work when choosing between colour and shapes. I feel that the dotted print resembles marks from a paint brush which to me looks unsual and nice, I could potentially use this as a simple paint technique to  relate with the simple finger printing technique that I will use to communicate Peter Pans childish personality.

Ruth Issett -  Ruth's work reflects her passion and excitement for using colour and fabric to create outstanding pieces of art. She uses a range of dyeing, printing and stitch within her work. I am really fascinated by the way she combines a 2D print with stitch and other scrap 3D fabrics. She combines a range of techniques into one piece and I am really inspired by the overall outcome of her work, I will definitely consider adding to my experimental pieces using more than one process and material. 

Hyperbolic crochet - The project began in 2005 in Los Angeles. For the first four years the Reef took over their designers house, gradually expanding. The project began to expand into other cities and countries until it has now become a worldwide movement that engages communities across the globe from America to England. The inspiration for making crochet reef forms begins with the technique of "hyperbolic crochet" discovered in 1997 by Cornell University mathematician Dr. Daina Taimina. The Wertheim sisters adopted Dr Taimina's techniques and elaborated upon them to develop a whole taxonomy of reef-life forms. Loopy "kelps", fringed "anemones", crenelated "sea slugs", and curlicued "corals" have all been modeled. I feel I can easily relate this to my previous experimental pieces from blog posts (12) and (13) where I used two constructed textile methods of weaving and pom pom construction to replicate sea anemone and also to learn a new constructed technique. I found that the pom poms were very useful and I will consider to develop that method further and possibly use the technique within my final collection to represent the unique sea beds just like the crochet project.

How to Take a Portrait of America

Last December, Tanner Curtis, a Politics photo editor at The Times covering the 2020 U.S. presidential election, needed a break from the candidates. He mentioned to Eve Lyons, a photo editor for Styles, that he’d love to collaborate on a project for The Look, a visual Styles column that examines identity and culture.

They got to talking, and they landed on a project that would take place on a road trip across America — touching on politics, but in a less direct, more atmospheric way. They brought in another Styles editor, Bonnie Wertheim, to hone the idea and saw their seedling pitch grow limbs, from one road trip to four, each produced by its own photographer and reporter. The pairs would explore separate themes — patriotism, tradition, community and youth — and their routes would lead them through states with political clout in the next election.

The editors wanted storytellers on the road who were familiar with their regions. The photographer Daniel Arnold’s Milwaukee upbringing, he said, meant that while documenting patriotism in the Midwest with the writer Jacqui Shine, he “wasn’t going to be some weird interloper making a snap judgment about what goes on.” They began at a flag manufacturer in Oak Creek, Wis., and ended at a gun club in Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Curtis said it felt significant to have the photographer Andre Wagner and the writer Hanif Abdurraqib capture different aspects of community from Baltimore to Hilton Head Island, S.C.; they’ve both covered black identity in America before. And the Los Angeles-based journalists Jessica Lehrman and Walter Thompson-Hernández were natural fits to document youth culture throughout the Southwest, from a Junior R.O.T.C. camp in San Diego to pageant competitors in El Paso.

“I knew our country was diverse, but I didn’t know just how diverse it was,” Ms. Lyons said. Mr. Curtis was surprised by some of the narratives and characters too, citing in particular Ms. Shine and Mr. Arnold’s story about Matt Russell, a fifth-generation farmer in rural Iowa who, with his husband, has become a provider of refuge for teenagers with troubled pasts.

Pursuing the topic of tradition, Farah Al Qasimi and Liana Aghajanian snaked along the Northeast. They stopped in 20 cities in two weeks, beginning in Hamtramck, Mich., known for its dense immigrant population. Ms. Al Qasimi said she learned a lot on the road: For example, a person’s body can, in fact, begin to reject mozzarella sticks and diner pies after a period of time. Rupert Holmes’s anthem “Escape” (you’ve heard it: “If you like piña coladas …”) might be the most played song on the radio, along with “working-people hymns of the ’80s.” And, more seriously, “People generally feel very unheard,” she said. “At times, I felt like we were their unpaid therapists. There was a lot of emotional labor involved.”

Not everybody was so open. They were in Ohio during the Dayton shooting, and as a pair of Middle Eastern women, they said they raised some eyebrows in the rust belt. Once at a gas station in Strausstown, Pa., Ms. Al Qasimi read a sign: “United States Terrorist Hunting Permit.” There, she received what she described as “the absolute worst, ugliest look, just the worst stare-down.”

“We had none of that friction,” said Mr. Arnold, who recalled speaking with Ms. Al Qasimi about these episodes on the road. “Jacqui and I are Midwestern white people. We could be invisible.”

While Ms. Lyons said they had to cull images significantly, the impact of the stories remains striking. Tracy Ma, a visual editor for the Styles desk, worked on the design online, and reined in her often maximalist style in service of the project: “I wanted to have a minimal footprint,” she said. Tala Safie created a cohesive design for the print version, in papers on Sunday.

The project represents “a tiny slice of America,” Ms. Lyons said, but she hopes it gives people a better idea of what America looks like as it enters 2020. “We’re choosing a president for everybody, so it’s good to know what people are thinking and feeling. ”

On their last stop in the Northeast, Ms. Al Qasimi said, they ventured into a forest in Canterbury, N.H., for a church service — her first. She was tired. It would be a mostly older, white congregation, and her expectations for mutual understanding were low. But “in the middle of the prayer,” she said, “I started crying.” Everyone was remarkably caring and compassionate. Suddenly, it was her turn to confront her bias. “We’re all really worried. It’s rightfully a time of heightened anxiety,” she said. “I hope people will realize that they have more in common than they think.”

Erkentelijkheid en schaamte

Naar zich laat aanzien komt het monument van Daniel Libeskind voor 102.000 in de oorlog vermoorde Joodse Nederlanders aan het begin van de Weesperstraat in Amsterdam. Als dat plan doorgaat, staat het op een steenworp afstand van een ander monument, dat eerst op het Weesperplein stond maar later vanwege de metro-aanleg verplaatst is: het op 23 februari 1950 onthulde ‘Monument van Joodse Erkentelijkheid’. 

Ik had er eigenlijk nooit van gehoord, totdat Amstelodamum, maandblad voor de kennis van Amsterdam, er onlangs een doorwrocht artikel aan wijdde, van de hand van Roel Hijink en Gerrit Vermeer. Je kunt de geschiedenis van dit monument niet lezen, zonder door schaamte te worden bevangen. Het beoogt de dankbaarheid uit te drukken van Joden, voor de steun die zij tijdens de jaren van jodenvervolging van de kant van andere Nederlanders hebben ontvangen. 

Zeker zijn er niet-joodse Nederlanders geweest die zich, met inzet van eigen leven, heldhaftig hebben ingezet voor vervolgde Joden, en die daarvoor zeker geprezen moeten worden. Maar te oordelen aan het relatief geringe aantal Nederlandse Joden dat de Duitse bezetting overleefde - 20.000, naar het schijnt - kunnen die helden niet al te talrijk zijn geweest. De Nederlandse verhoudingen in dit opzicht steken ongunstig af bij die in de ons omringende, eveneens door de Duitsers bezette landen. Dat maakt de gedachte aan een monument van erkentelijkheid van Joden aan het adres van de rest van de Nederlandse samenleving nogal bizar.

Het monument, ontworpen door Johan Wertheim, was een initiatief van een groep Joodse notabelen, die uit de kampen waren teruggekeerd. Het artikel in Amstelodamum bevat, als ik mij niet vergis, een heuse scoop: de aanzet tot deze uiting van dankbaarheid kwam in eerste instantie van koningin Wilhelmina. De vorstin, die zich zoals bekend tijdens haar verblijf in Engeland nooit in het bijzonder had bekommerd om het lot van de Joodse landgenoten, had - vermoedelijk in 1945 al - in een gesprek met een van de latere initiatiefnemers tot het monument, gezegd dat “zij het gek vond dat de joden zo weinig dank betoond hadden aan hun Nederlandse onderduikadressen”. 

Voor deze vorstelijke interventie bestaat maar één (ongepubliceerde) bron, maar geloofwaardig is zij zeker. In de hele Nederlandse samenleving trouwens konden de Joodse overlevenden - zo veel is de laatste decennia uit historisch onderzoek wel duidelijk geworden - in de eerste naoorlogse jaren op een koele, zo niet vijandige ontvangst rekenen, waarbij het wemelde van klachten over het gedrag van Joden in de oorlogsjaren. Op een bepaalde manier had de antisemitische propaganda uit de bezettingsjaren dus toch zijn werk gedaan, door sommige Nederlanders het gevoel te geven dat Joden in de samenleving een aparte groep vormden, op wie specifieke kritiek kon worden gericht. In deze trant werd het zeker niet gepast geacht dat Joden een bijzondere slachtoffer-status zouden claimen.

Veel overlevenden waren dat ook niet van plan. Wie de eerste jaargang van het Nieuw Israëlitisch Weekblad na de Bevrijding leest, wordt het eerder koud om het hart vanwege de wanhopig optimistische toon in de kolommen - met hartverscheurende advertenties van Joodse middenstanders die opgetogen melden dat de winkel weer open gaat. De eerste melding, van het Rode kruis, dat er miljoenen mensen in de kampen zijn omgekomen, staat op een binnenpagina - een kort bericht onderin.

Het Monument van Joodse Erkentelijkheid was zeker niet onomstreden bij de onthulling in 1950. In de toespraak van burgemeester Arnold d’Ailly, die het ‘geschenk aan de stad’ in ontvangst nam, klonk zeker gêne door: “Hoewel veel weerstand geboden is, zijn zeer velen te kort geschoten”. De meeste Joodse organisaties lieten bij de onthulling overigens verstek gaan. 

Merkwaardigerwijze getuigt het tweede monument dat ter nagedachtenis van de jodenvervolging werd opgericht, het in 1952 onthulde standbeeld van De Dokwerker, eveneens vooral van de voortreffelijkheid van niet-joodse Nederlanders. De Dokwerker gedenkt immers de Februari-staking van 1941, een protest tegen de eerste razzia’s. Rond dit monument speelde zich jarenlang een onverkwikkelijk touwtrekken af, omdat de Communistische Partij van Nederland (CPN) meende dat de Februari-staking vooral haar werk was geweest, en zich verzette tegen ‘burgerlijke’ krachten die bij de herdenking deze historische verdienste wilden negeren.

Moet het Monument van Joodse Erkentelijkheid nu maar verdwijnen, omdat het lof uitdeelt in een context die zeventig jaar later nog voornamelijk schaamte opwekt? Hijink en Vermeer vinden van niet en dat ben ik wel met ze eens. De gênante ontstaansgeschiedenis van het monument zelf is misschien iets dat zinvol in herinnering kan worden geroepen - geschiedenis is nu eenmaal niet een collectie mooie dingen. 

Zeventig jaar later is de nagedachtenis van de Bezetting radicaal van inhoud veranderd. De herdenking van de jodenvervolging heeft nu, wellicht terecht, in het collectief geheugen van Nederland de meeste andere aspecten van de Bezetting verdrongen. Steeds meer mensen, ook jongeren, lijken op 4 mei deel te nemen aan herdenkingen - en denken dan, als ik mij niet vergis, eerder aan de slachtoffers van de jodenvervolging dan aan, bijvoorbeeld, de gesneuvelde Nederlandse militairen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het monument van Libeskind past straks geheel in deze ontwikkeling.

Daar is niets op tegen, zolang maar niet de illusie ontstaat dat wij, als Nederlanders met de juiste gedachten op 4 mei, een soort heiligen zijn. Om dat misverstand te bestrijden moet het Monument van Joodse Erkentelijkheid maar blijven staan, net als - om een heel ander voorbeeld te noemen - de standbeelden van Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Herdenken is altijd een politieke, historische daad. Geschiedenis is geen proces van zuivering, totdat alle rottigheid is uitgezeefd en alleen het juiste standpunt is overgebleven, als een ijle, boven alle kritiek verheven waarheid. Was het maar waar.
