Centaur Watching Fish by Arnold Böcklin (1878).
I love love love Böcklin’s mythical pieces, they have this sense of realism, and often even sensitivity.

I just watched The Boy and the Heron and I'm convinced that there is some kind of connection between it and the art of the Swiss symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin. The strange ruins/tomb by the sea and all those cyprus trees. There is even a painting by Böcklin (St. Anthony preaching to the fish) with a bunch of fish coming out of the water to talk to a person - just like in the movie! This is probably just a silly theory but I want it to be true.
