i’m a bit high
i’ve always felt like being born on the first of the month was a lil fun and fancy but then i began to wonder if that’s just how everyone feels about their birthday. so i made a poll about it.

I don't really get it when people feel the need to respond to Jess's "I know you better than anyone- this isn't you!" by saying, "No, LORELAI is the only one who knows Rory better than anyone!"
Firstly, I think that's taking Jess's comment a little TOO literally. I don't think this is meant to be a competitive thing; there's no need to assert Lorelai's supremacy here.
Secondly, the implication with these statements is often that Jess is being presumptuous, that he doesn't actually understand Rory very well, and that "liking the same books and music doesn't mean you know someone!" Ok, but ASP herself has stated multiple times that Jess is someone who just "gets" Rory and that they "see each other for who they really are." So Jess isn't just saying something because he wants it to be true. He's not being delusional here, according to the writers. He DOES know her really well. Whether you like it or not, the writers say he does.
Thirdly, the phrase, "Best Friends first, mother and daughter second!" is often thrown down as a trump card here, like, "See! Lorelai will always know her daughter better than some boy!" And... I think I understand the sentiment here. The relationship between Lorelai and Rory will ALWAYS be the most important relationship in the show, and it's very special. But the show also deconstructs this idea, over and over again. There are many times when Lorelai is convinced that she knows her daughter and what's best for her daughter, but then she is surprised to discover that she doesn't. That's a natural part of growing up. No one relationship will encompass all that you are as a person. Lorelai knows Rory SO well. But Jess understands some things about Rory that her mother doesn't (and the converse is also true). Luke understands some things about Lorelai that Rory doesn't (and the converse is also true). This is normal and even, dare I say it, healthy. There are some parts of ME that my husband will never understand the way my mother does. But there are also some parts of me that my mother will never understand the way my husband does. The Girls adjusting to this part of growing up has been a central conflict and theme from the very beginning of the show.
#lol just saw a post that made me so annoyed#I could name a few other reasons why Rory is “a very forgiving person”#rory gilmore#jess mariano#gilmore girls meta#gilmore girls

People might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of, or because of, his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn't so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had.
—David Lynch
