Fandom: The Strange Case of Starship Iris (Podcast)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Violet Liu & Arkady Patel
Characters: Violet Liu, Arkady Patel, Brian Jeeter
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Werewolf, mild body horror, moderately worse than canon-typical violence, AU rewrite of The Carmen Gambit and Parallels, just a little, Werewolf Violet, author spent an undisclosed number of days flirting with a panic attack at work, and then got to thinking it would be so choice if a panic attack gave them teeth and fangs, and then their coworkers couldn’t ask them to do things anymore, so that’s why this exists
Admittedly, this is self-indulgent, even for me. But I had a dogshit week so whatever. Rest assured, I have a whole bullshit sci-fi logic for how werewolves exist in this universe but mostly this concept is just so ungodly compelling to me.
Violet Liu has done an admirable job keeping her identity secret from the crew of the Rumor. Unfortunately, for some reason, the box breathing she learned in therapy wasn’t quite enough to keep control with a gun pointed at her face.
Imagine that.

Oh, right
Also I cribbed the original set-up from @iriscasefiles when I got so tired of waiting for season 3 I wrote my own. I'm Black, so I'm allowed to do that. The stories diverged QUICKLY, but I do wanna encourage y'all to please listen to this god-sent podcast. It's up there with Nightvale as a titan of the genre and, to be honest, I miss entire seasons of Nightvale, but I wouldn't miss an episode of Starship Iris if the sun was hurtling toward Earth and I was left suffocating in space.
Literally, the original 5-man-band of space-faring brewers. I just had to get ethnic wit it. I owe a lot to The Strange Case of Starship Iris. Not my plot, I did steer it in a completely different direction, but like in a big way my life. It really saved me in dark times, and I thank the entire crew for the effort and love they imbue into it.
Gotta lay some flowers at that altar.
You should still read my book, though, can't stress enough that it's the best thing ever written. It's not cocky if it's true
#TSCOSI#WOSR#please listen to it the slowburn between Arkady and Violet is something that must be experienced live

Okay I know don’t normally post fanfic (or even write it for that matter!), but I finally* finished off this Starship Iris piece that I got really excited about on here so thought I might as well share it!
Thank you @munchiezxx for the post that inspired this, and @iffeelscouldkill and @tunedtostatic for enabling me XD
(*When I say 'finally', I really do mean it: technically most of this is something I wrote I think 2 years ago???😅 God knows why it took me until now to feel like finishing off and posting it. My mind is a mystery to me, but hey, at least one way I'm consistent is in my obsession with this podcast🤷♀️😂)

in retrospect, soooo rude of Arkady to see one (1) person hit on Sana and go damn, this is just like that time you were hooking up with the son of the owners of our prison planet and then he bailed, thus scrambling our uprising plans
#poor sana she will never live it down#tscosi#jaggedwolf rambles#is this just how arkady reacts to anyone flirting with sana#wow what a security threat no there's no other reason I dislike this#in the v/a -> v/a/s universes violet just ends up with a mental notebook of all the ways arkady is incredibly weird about sana like this XD#mine

Arkady and Krejjh and Violet and McCabe constantly dealing with the cost of taking a living person's life and having to continue on because war is death and life is death and survival is death and have I mentioned that TSCoSI makes me insane
#TSCoSI#Violet watched Arkady more or less kill someone and decided that was the kind of burden she wanted to make out with#(<wild misrepresentation of what actually happens but it IS kind of funny how the timing works out)

Fic: Waking Dream
Fandom: The Strange Case of Starship Iris Wordcount: 100 Summary: Post-episode 9. After the crew learns the truth about the swarm, Violet spends a restless night in the medbay.
Content note: Mentions of medical stuff and the possible impacts of the swarm on humans. Also anxiety and sleeplessness experienced by the POV character.
(But there's also cute H/C!)
---
It had been a long night.
Violet had combed through every item in the medbay, inventorying each supplement and vitamin. Zinc, magnesium, iron, potassium - there was no way of telling what the swarm might absorb from their systems.
She was the ship's doctor; so, she prepared treatments. It was the only way to stop her anxious brain churning.
Eventually, she nodded off, and dreamed of someone leaning over her, a hand putting gentle pressure on her shoulder. Violet blinked awake; there was no-one there.
Except that when she turned, she found a freshly-brewed mug of mint tea by her side.
A/N: Sometimes I'll just start thinking about a scene from TSCOSI and then get the urge to write about it xD In this case, it was the scene in Episode 8 where Violet tries to dismiss her condition as no big deal, then reveals that she's been up all night coughing.
I've wanted to dig more into the effects of the swarm on the crew in those three weeks that we don't really hear about, because I refuse to believe that they were all fine as soon as they disabled the temperature reg. They obviously made it out okay (....excepting Brian of course, but that came later), but I think that Violet would have taken it upon herself to throw everything she had medically at the problem.
Originally I was going to make this more of a sickfic, but since Violet sorts out her cough pretty much immediately in canon, I turned it into anxiety-induced sleeplessness instead.
I like the idea of Arkady quietly making a gesture to show she's looking out for Violet, even if she won't say it :D

So, remember when I said that I had an original fic (with the song my ex's best friend by Machine Gun Kelly on the playlist for it) that I would be posting more about soon? (Okay, like 4 people saw that post, but shh).
Well... surprise! The origfic in question is a polyamorous smut short story that's publishing in this 👆 anthology, which is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter! And we're less than £1,000/just over $1,000 away from meeting our funding goal as I type this!
I think I'm okay to share that my story is titled 'Getting the Band Together' and it's a foursome (F/NB/M/NB) feat. four very oblivious 20-something musicians xD But to learn more than that, you'll need to back and read my story (or you can follow the campaign for updates, I imagine you'll also learn more that way :D)
I know smut isn't everyone's cup of tea, of course, and it's a bit of a departure from my normal writing that I've published so far :ninja: but if you think it might be yours, I'd be stocked if you checked out the campaign on Kickstarter! Or feel free to share it with a friend who might like it! <3
The Kickstarter Campaign for Our First Erotic Anthology is LIVE!
Join us as we crowdfund our first-ever erotica anthology, Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica!
For those who love their short stories spicy, we're delighted to announce Duck Prints Press's debut explicit anthology Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica. In this collection of brand-new stories, we celebrate many flavors of polyamory. Orgy? Yes please! Ménage à trois? C'est magnifique! Foursomes and moresomes? Delighted to attend! We asked our contributors to blow our minds with their fun combinations, unusual settings, favorite trope usage, and (of course) super sexy smut—and they didn't disappoint. From a vampire free-for-all to a heartfelt reunion, from surprise soulmates to enemies-to-lovers, this collection has polyamory in lots of scrumptious varieties that lovers of erotica won't want to miss!
This book contains 15 stories, each up to 7,500 words, by our awesome fan-authors-turned-original-fic-authors. The cover is by the awesome Aaron Kotze, and campaign merchandise features art by him, Alessa Riel, reshipkmn, and Speculative Wicktion.
This campaign runs until July 20th, 2024 – there’s no better time than TODAY to become a campaign backer!
It’s also a great time to become a Patreon backer – and you’ll get a free bonus piece of merch if you back both the Many Hands campaign and are a $10/month or $25/month level supporter!
#my fic#Duck Prints Press#origfic#polyam#polyamory#smut#ngl every time I read the title I have Arkady's voice in my head saying 'erotica' with a laugh#the way she says it to Violet in episode 2#maybe soon I will finish and post the fic that I wrote as a writing sample for this anthology#which may or may not be TSCOSI 🤐

hey violet! what's been floating your way lately, creatively speaking? i've been leaning towards sci-fi :)
hey anon!
heck yeah, sci fic =D my favorite!
cut for a long reply with a little TEG at the end :)
creative expression wise, not too much. I wrote about 2600 words of a Day in the Life of TEG Nautica short story, but I didn't finish it in time for the anniversary, so I guess I'll set it aside for now. I'm really hoping to think of something for this year's Big Bang project. the last sign up day for writers is March 2. if I think of something before then I'll be signing up :)
creative well-filling wise (aka when you feel really stuck sometimes you have to absorb media - watch movies, read books, etc), I made my goal of reading 1 book/month last month! I read two books:
Genefather by Guy Haley
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
Genefather is a Warhammer 40k book. I know absolutely nothing about warhammer, but I have a friend/coworker who loves it. I asked him what the novels are like as I was curious what the quality was for that IP (the TF novels being pretty bad as far as I've ever heard). He loaned me Genefather to check it out. The writing quality is surprisingly good! I was impressed. I was also ABSOLUTELY LOST for most of the book, until my friend finally wrote me a little guide (dammit, I had asked for it months ago lol). Then my understanding went a bit better. It was funny and had some very good descriptions. I did notice a strange drop in quality at the end of the book: I am guessing the author ran out of time before a deadline. If you like warhammer (or don't mind being TOTALLY lost and reading something meant to appeal to Men Who Like to Paint Figures (I specify Men because the emphasis is on male characters in the way that "this book was written by a man" happens)), I would recommend it.
A Memory Called Empire is a book that's often on "if you like The Locked Tomb series, read this" lists. I freaking love TLT series so I was happy to finally get to read it. It's very well constructed and interesting. I wrote a post about it a bit ago if you'd like to hear more about it. I do recommend this to fans of sci fi.
My friend has loaned me another warhammer book and I've started it. It's not as funny as the first one and work has left me so tired, I've been falling asleep reading it at night, lol. But I will get through it. And next week Emily Wilde 3 comes out!! I pre-ordered it so the hardcover will be mailed to me. Can't wait! (I also highly recommend the Emily Wilde series for a fantasy with some romance on the side)
Aaaaaaannnnnnnd I think it would be fun to share a little bit of the Nautica fic. This is a rough draft, so please read with gentleness, haha.
---
Wake up, beloved Like a jewel in the sky Wake up, beloved The sparklight of my life
Nautica stirred. Blaster's dulcet recording – her morning alarm – swept gently through her processor. Wake up protocols commenced. Her frame's proprioception feedback came in little waves: root mode, lying down; Blaster's warmth; their mingling, low power fields. Nautica onlined and gently wiggled out of Blaster's arms.
“Good morrrrrnnninggggggg,” whispered Nautica.
Blaster made some sleepy noises but didn't wake. She kissed the top of his audial, where the lightning shaped finial connected. He smiled in his sleep.
Nautica quietly grabbed her wrench and headed to the cafeteria. Their chore cycles were currently on opposite ends- she had first shift, Blaster had third. She was looking forward to the cycle swap. Only 22 more days. She missed spending more waking time with him.
On the way to the cafeteria, she hopped onto the ship's net and flipped through her messages.
There was the usual daily bulletin, stating the date (the current dimension they were in plus the number of days and hours they'd been in it) and a copy of the day's chore cycle schedule. Nautica's chores appeared to her in solid black glyphs: the rest of the crew's schedule appeared faint gray. Nautica focused on Blaster's name. Her chore glyphs faded as his came in sharp. This was a programming trick Minimus was quite proud of. It combined “sensory information from the internal viewer” (semi-legal software from Brainstorm (who told Minimus it was entirely legal)) and the eye-tracking software of a medical evaluation mod. Ship/club activities were scattered throughout the schedule in green.
Blaster's chore cycle glyphs swirled and changed.
“Huh?”
Half his chore cycle had been delegated to Siren. An alert popped up at the same time a “Special Meeting” was inserted into both her and Blaster's schedules:
Double Date Swerve's, 33:00 Captain's table (that's any table I sit down at) Signed, Your favorite co-captain
As Nautica puzzled over this, an edit alert went through and the invitation was amended:
Double Date Swerve's tonight, 33:00 Captain's table (that's any table I sit down at) Starring Rodimus and Soundwave. And you two. Signed, Your favorite co-captain and Soundwave no of course I didn't forget you hey stop checking the schedule that's hacking you can't hack a captain hhhhhhhhehhhhhhhh oh look what you did to the invi
Nautica stifled her laugh. I wish I could see the look on Blaster's face when he wakes up! I wonder if this has something to do with Project Mindspread? No, Blaster's not on the team. Rodimus is just... being social. She accepted the invitation.
Moving on, there were three messages in her inbox. The first wasn't signed, but by the total lack of punctuation and signifiers, she deduced it was from Skywarp: “maintenance vines moved harp survived,” which was slightly worrying. She would definitely be asking him about that during their morning shift.
The second message was a long paragraph from Ambulon. She skimmed it and caught, various integration techniques, quantum mechanics, unfamiliar, ??? the nerve of this guy and set it aside. She'd read it after she'd eaten.
The last message was the most intriguing:
We request to see you today, at your earliest convenience, between 11:00 and 15:00. Your expertise is needed for an urgent matter. Bring your wrench.
The signatures, Megatron and Ultra Magnus, were complete with status signifiers and a read confirmation signal.
“My expertise, huh?” said Nautica. This was a puzzle. As far as she knew, neither mech required quantum mechanics for their daily workloads. “A new mystery for a new day!”
Nautica replied with a cheerful greeting and confirmed a 13:45 time slot in Megatron's office.
---
there we are =)
thanks for the message, anon! have a good one =)

didn’t know to send this here or to your fic blog but OBVIOUSLY i must know where the cream cheese thief/disaffected cafeteria worker divide falls for enjoltaire and for arkady/violet, although i’ll be honest i have a solid guess for the latter but i feel like the first could swing both ways
HELLO!
the former is addressed here; the latter raises some additional interesting questions. this may imply some deep deficiency about my own character-creation skills, but when we're talking Starship Iris, the main problem i run into is that the scenario kind of stipulates that the cream cheese is being stolen badly.
like, listen, do i think that a modern college AU Arkady Patel is above lifting an entire brick of cream cheese for her own nefarious ends? of course not. but i will tell you this about any version of Arkady Patel that i can imagine: that girl covers her tracks. you wanna catch her in the act, you better have extensive use of security cameras and the ability to freeze-frame, motherfucker.
i am inclined to think that Violet Liu would also, under at least the majority of circumstances, harness her own anxieties to foresee every possible complication she could humanly foresee, and guard against them. i think the one exception to this is if she is having A Mental Health Incident, like the anxiety has spiraled to full-on terrified depression, and she is approaching that condiments bar like a woman with a hunger for the soothing powers of cheesecake deep in her heart, and absolutely nothing to lose.
Violet drops the cream cheese into a tupperware hidden in her purse, Arkady witnesses this, Violet witnesses Arkady witness it and absolutely makes a break for it, hyperventilating all the while, and Arkady literally leaps over a cafeteria table to follow Violet outside the cafeteria, and just when Violet's paranoid fears have crested into full-on "am I about to be arrested?" mode, Arkady's like, "hey. a purse is maybe the worst vessel for this caper, can I interest you in a bagel? pile your cream cheese on the bagel and then scrape it into a secondary container once you're out of the room" and Violet's like, "uh are you giving me thieving tips" and Arkady says, "at least make it a little challenging, i mean right? game on" and it doesn't cure Violet's mental health issues, i mean come on, of fucking course it doesn't, it doesn't even lead to a breakthrough, but the thought that she might need to have her emotions stabler before maaaaybe going on a date with the cute cafeteria worker is one additional straw on the camel's back of "check in with your university's mental health services."
meanwhile, Arkady's fellow cafeteria workers, Brian Jeeter and what's-their-name—that French exchange student with the purple hair—are giving her so much shit.

“Hey, uh, First Mate Patel? Do you really need to be wearing those while we eat breakfast?” Arkady pokes her food around her plate, fighting with the strange tong-like utensil she was given to eat with. Despite her proficiency with chopsticks, and even after a couple days being served meals with it, the mechanics are frustratingly elusive.
“I’m protecting my night vision,” she explains grumpily, gesturing at the goggles perched on her nose, blocking the light from reaching her non-dominant eye. “Half your rooms are barely lit, and I can’t watch for threats if I can’t see.”
“Riiiight,” Krejjh says, watching Arkady chase an egg the size of a marble around her plate. “But it’s not dark now. Don’t you think this would be a lot easier with, you know, depth perception?”
Arkady drops the damned tongs and picks up the egg with her fingers to pop into her mouth. “Yeah, it would. Only, our inferior human eyesight takes over an hour to readjust to the dark, so, unfortunately—“
“Crewman Jeeter, is that true?”
Jeeter clears his throat, scooping a strip of fish from his plate with ease. “Er, well, it’s only a few minutes to be able to see okay. Shapes and things.”
“Not,” Arkady interjects, “well enough to shoot by, though.”
“Probably not,” Jeeter agrees.
“A few minutes? To see shapes?” Krejjh sputters, outraged. “You’ve been running around blind the past four days and you didn’t tell me?!”

ok so I started listening to the strange case of starship iris in an effort to comb through my reasonably sized list of stuff I gotta listen/watch/play/read before I die
as of now I'm on episode 4 and these are my thoughts
• loving Violet as of now. short lesbian(?) nation rise up
• Arkady my DEAR you are so emotionally constipated I can't even

• Shout out to Brian, trans icon and most chill guy ever.
• Sana hasn't done a lot yet but she seems pretty cool, I love how much she tries to make sure everyone feels motivated
•LOVE Krejjh with all my heart. Im rly interested in how we're going to learn abt the history of the dwarnians and their culture through the lens of someone who does love their culture but is facing an internal conflict of sorts about it
also this line

was objectively really funny
