I want to add onto this and say that some states are specifically going after Japanese imports (particularly Kei Trucks) at the moment without any rhyme or reason. As the previous person stated, you can get into trouble fairly easily, and it would be incredibly easy to get a car that's cheap on paper but a nightmare on maintenance. Something like the Toyota Aristo might be fairly easy to manage here, as it's basically a sister car to the Lexus GS that was available in the US, and it's engine, the 2JZ-GTE is highly supported in the aftermarket.
But something like the Suzuki Cappucino (or most Kei cars beyond the trucks) would require specialized mechanics with know-how and parts are a coin toss (either they share parts with common models and aren't difficult to get or... a nightmare).
Plus Japanese cars are right hand drive, which is remarkably inconvenient in any country where cars are usually the opposite.
