Tips to improve your pronunciation

1. Sing カラオケ version of japanese songs 

Yes, I know, I am not the first one telling you that... But I was like you at first: I didn’t want to do it because i thought it was useless... Until one day, I realized as I was waiting the bus, that I had been singing japanese songs for the past few weeks ! And my accent did improve ! My teacher told me I had a better accent then I used to and asked me to what was it due ? So I said it was because I’d listen to/sang soooo many songs that i’ve been able to imitate better the japanese accent ! You don’t even have to listen to songs like J-pop if you don’t like it. Here is a few songs that you can find in Miyazaki’s film or in anime... :

2. Listen to podcast, TV shows...

You can find TV programs, Drama, podcasts and much more! And if you have a great level, you can start searching for subjects that interest you !

Its okay if you don’t understand anything ! You are just here for pronunciation ;) “Chaque chose en on temps ! ” as we say in french :)

3. Check out website and articles about pronunciation

You should definitely go an Pinterest or really any website where you can find pronunciation tips !

I have been following Tofugu’s website for several years and I have to admit that it’s freaking perfect ! Actually, they recently made a really complete article about pronunciation and you should check it out ! I promise you this is a life saver !

4. Be proud of your accent

The goal is not to not be recognize as a stranger ! The goal is to be fluent and understood. But more importantly, the goal is to have the accent you like ! You have to be proud of your accent because it is what makes you you. If you can and want to change it, then there’s nothing stopping you ! But if you’re not satisfied with it, don’t reduce your efforts to nothing. Because I know you’ve given so much to speak the way you do today, and I also know that your accent is good, no matter what you say :))

PS: The poet Rupi Kaur said that the accent of a person is the most beautiful thing ever. Because it carries two cultures at the same time. And that, my friends, is extraordinary.
