A couple of our servers have gotten a bit overwhelmed, so we're taking some down time to give them a chance to catch up. We'll be back as soon as possible!

"Why can't the freaks on AO3 just go and make a site for all the gross stuff and leave AO3 alone."
Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.
AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.
AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:
Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.
AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

I’m seeing a lot of stress from Americans about AO3 being down! If that’s the case for you, gentle reader, then may I advise you to take action against KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act)?
This act threatens to allow the government to censor what they decide what they deem “obscene content” online. Given Rupublicans’ very recent history of deeming all LGBT+ content of any type “too obscene for kids”, this can very possibly result in restricting access to any sort of queer resources and queer content online, for the sake of ‘protecting kids’. Which includes your favorite gay fanfics!

A03 is Back, and Please Do Not Blindly Spread The Claim That A Group Called "Anonymous Sudan" Is Behind This
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A03 is back online, and that's great! However, there are posts going around right now blindly saying that a group called "Anonymous Sudan" is behind the attack and repeating the group's stated goals. As A03 has already said, there is good reason to doubt that this group is being honest about it's political motivations and affiliations. We don't know the whole story yet, but it's quite possible that the group is attempting to intentionally stoke islamophobia.
Please do not blindingly spread posts repeating the group's motivation, and be extremely wary of islamophobic statements that might be coming across your dash. More information will come out in time as security experts are able to do their job and trace down the group in question.

Commenting on Fanfic Themes
Remember when you were in literature class and your teacher was droning on and on and ON about themes, but the only thing you could think of is-
Tumblr media
Understandable! Especially when you weren't interested in the book or short story (I'm looking at you "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin).
And if you had a teacher that sucked? Yeah, can completely see why you would snore through the whole explanation of why themes are important. I certainly did!
But at the heart of it, themes are such an important part of all writing! Even fanfic! It's basically just asking yourself the question "What was the story trying to say?" or "What was the point?"
And every story has them, even Fanfic. And you will find that pointing them out often helps you convey to the author what you loved about the fanfic.
Reading a story about a lonely kid getting a dedicated group of found family? Maybe a theme of that is how blood isn't the only kind of family. Or that loneliness is only temporary. Or that the world gets better.
Reading a story where two men who loathe each other fall head over heels in love? Maybe the story was saying that first impressions aren't everything. Or that people change for the ones they love. Or that you can't let pride get in the way of being vulnerable.
So, here is a very simple format for how you can comment on the theme of a story, without having to write a five paragraph high school essay!
"I noticed the theme of _______ throughout this story. When Character did _______ it really highlighted the theme of ________ and I thought it was a really nice touch."
Let me show you an example.
"I noticed the theme of loneliness throughout this story. When Tommy was in a room full of people at the big party, yet was thinking about how he couldn't connect to them, it really highlighted the theme of loneliness and I thought it was a really nice touch."
Congrats! You have now commented on a theme of the fanfic! And I can guarantee it made the author's day. It's really that simple.
"But wait, what if that wasn't a theme the author intended and I just look dumb!" My friend, high school cannot hurt you here. You will not be graded on picking out the correct themes from a piece of fanfic. You aren't trying to be the smartest person in the room and make up groundbreaking theses about Shakespeare, you are just picking out what you loved. You are just saying how the story spoke to you! There is no right or wrong answer. Not even the author's intent can change the way it made you feel.

One of the honest to god worst things about all the baby Wattpadders migrating to AO3 is how they're all formatting their shit and trying to do a whole marketing campaign in the summary and author notes because they're so used to the 2012 fancy text generator maybe your story will be read by a world famous movie director and you'll get famous and marry One Direction era that Wattpad superglued itself to.
Like when you've written your entire summary in double bold size 13 Barnbrook font I literally cannot see shit. Its just squiggles. Its just a mass of ugly squiggles that tells me less about your story than your 2 tags do.
Your summary should tell me what the story is about, not how excited you are to have written it and where to find you on a site I am clearly not using. You're not trying to sell your book at The Strand you're uploading it to an archive website known for ungodly smut and ships not even the devil himself would've thought of.
You don't need stolen fanart and unreadable font to get me to read your story you need appropriate tags and a summary that at the very least tells me if I should brace myself for Cars Universe cannibalism or not.
