PlayStation VR Library Now Over 100 Titles
Originally launched on 13th October, 2016, the PlayStation VR went through something of a rocky start to reach its current position as king of the high-end virtual reality (VR) castle, with over 1 million units sold. With the upcoming release of the updated PlayStation VR headset, this seems like a good opportunity to look at the history of the device so far, and what is currently available for users to play.
Upon first launch, the PlayStation VR’s popularity appeared to take Sony by surprise, as the company had not produced enough stock to meet demand, a problem particularly seen in Japan where customers queued around the block on restock days. With the new PlayStation VR version seeing initial release in Japan later this month, lets hope Sony have learned from experience.
The PlayStation VR features a 5.7 inch OLED panel with a display capable of 1080p resolution, the device also has a video output box that allows video to output to the TV as well as the headset as well as providing processing for 3D audio effects. Though the PlayStation VR has no build-in headphones, it has a standard 3.5mm audio jack for users to plug in their own headphones, or a third-party audio solution such as the Mantis. The headset has nine LEDs for position tracking, which is PlayStation Camera is responsible for.
A run down of the currently available PlayStation VR titles follows below:

Evasion VR Interview: Archiact Interactive's Jennifer Dowding on the Co-Op Shooter
Evasion is an intense new bullet hell VR shooter game from Archiact Interactive that'll put you right in the middle of the battlefield with frenetic combat going on all around you. It's dropping on PlayStation VR soon, so we had a brief chat with the game's Senior Producer, Jennifer Dowding, about what to expect from the title. From what we can tell, it looks pretty slick!
The game will debut on PlayStation VR with support for the Aim controller, with movement built from the ground up for locomotion.
"We have ground-based enemies and aerial enemies. Our ground-based enemies are good at using cover, and our aerial enemies have different flight patterns based on different insects. They're all based on They're all powered by swarm AI that we developed in-house. It'll be really intense and have players second-guessing their movements."
Evasion is targeting a fall release on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. Let us know if this is something you think you might be interested in checking out!

The Future Has Gone Virtual
Virtual reality is no longer a dream but a reality of our times. What started as a gaming technology is finding itself more useful in different aspects of life too. The most popular way of enjoying virtual reality is through virtual-reality headsets that let you enjoy a 3D experience as if you were there too yourself. Now, who says these tech advancements can’t make our lives more exciting?
Just what is virtual reality? It actually is just a combination of the definition of both words, virtual and reality. Virtual simply means near whereas reality is our personal experience as human beings. In short, a virtual reality experience is a digital experience that is almost near reality.
Throngs of people flapped imaginary wings, paddled invisible canoes and took aim at shapeless digital foes, all courtesy of this year’s Consumer Virtual Reality (CVR) conference.
Now in its second year, the May 6-to-8 conference brought together tech enthusiasts of all kinds to embrace all things virtual.
With interest steadily growing, the CVR conference is poised to become one of the venue’s fastest-growing events as Vancouver takes centre stage in the virtual and augmented reality space.
“Last year, we were expecting about 1,200 to 1,400 people, and we ended up overselling and getting roughly 3,000,” said Dan Burgar, director of business development at Vancouver-based virtual reality (VR) company Archiact and president of the VR/AR Association.
(Via: https://www.biv.com/article/2017/5/virtual-reality-gets-comfortable-vancouver-venue/)
As the technology advances and becomes more accessible mainstream, more and more people become curious about it and are even willing to try it themselves. These gaming virtual-reality headsets are even selling like hot pancakes in kids and teens that are tech-savvy.
Virtual reality can be lonely.
For all of the overwrought promises about the futuristic technology connecting people, it's a pretty isolating experience. The hardware shuts out any view or sound of people physically near you, not many people own headsets yet, and interactions inside virtual settings are still limited.
Google (GOOG) is working on new features that could fix some of that. Unfortunately, it might involve hanging out in the VR version of a YouTube comments section.
The company announced the next steps for its virtual and augmented reality technology on Thursday at its annual I/O developers conference in Mountain View, California.
Google is releasing a major update to its virtual reality platform, Daydream. It's the software that will run on its own Daydream View goggles as well as the standalone headsets that third parties like Lenovo are creating later this year. Google also makes the Daydream View, a low-tech VR headset that uses a smartphone.
(Via: http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/18/technology/gadgets/google-vr-updates/)
The truth is that any obsession with technology tends to alienate the person from almost everyone and everything in his surroundings. They get lost in their virtual world and spend hours on end doing their thing on the computer and miss out on creating relationships and strengthening bonds between family and friends. It might be the same thing with virtual reality. Fortunately, Google got this covered as indicated in the article.
"I’m afraid [virtual reality] can be too good, in the sense of being an experience that people want to spend a huge amount of time in,” said Hanke at an industry conference last month, as reported by GamesIndustry. “I mean I already have concerns about my kids playing too much Minecraft, and that’s a wonderful game."
Hanke continued: “We’re human beings and there’s a lot of research out there that shows we’re actually a lot happier when we get exercise, when we go outside – and outside in nature in particular. I think it’s a problem for us as a society if we forgo that and spend all of time in a Ready Player One-style VR universe."
(Via: http://time.com/4780507/virtual-reality-vr-problems/)
This is one sad reality we have to acknowledge about virtual reality. Humans are social animals. It has been proven throughout history. We feel depressed and perform poorly in isolation. Unfortunately, the technology that we have now and are likely to dominate our future does just that. We get lost in our little virtual bubble that we become oblivious to what’s going on around us. We try to connect with people from our past and even to strangers but we miss out on living in the now with the people who means a lot to us because our times are consumed by our preoccupation with these tech gadgets and the Internet of Things.
Fortunately, they are still optional technologies right now. The thing with technology is that they only become bad depending on how you use it. Technology can either be your friend or foe, so make sure you use it right. Immerse yourself with the right technology and use it in moderation and you’ll be able to enjoy the best of both worlds without getting out of touch with reality.

PlayStation VR Release Date for Darknet Confirmed
Last month Archiact Interactive announced a partnership with indie developer E McNeill to bring the award-winning Darknet to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation VR. A release date for the title has now been confirmed, arriving on 7th March.
Origianlly launched for Samsung Gear VR, Darknet is an deep strategy/puzzle game that lets gamers play as an elite hacker contracted to retrieve data from the world’s most secure networks. Players dive into the Net, install viruses, inject code, and hack their way through cybersecurity in an experience inspired by a classic cyberpunk vision of the future.
Darknet has been refined and tailored for PlayStation VR boasting several new improvements. This includes full audio integration added to the PlayStation 4 Dualshock controller, art enhancements to the UI and main menu, as well as all-new PlayStation trophies for players to earn.
Since releasing Darknet E McNeill has gone on to create Tactera and most recently Skylight. VRFocus gave the former a 4-star rating saying: “Tactera is a great example of high production values on the Samsung Gear VR’s limited hardware and is a showcase piece for the strategy genre in VR.” While Skylight got a 5-star review: “Skylight has been perfectly formulated with engaging gameplay, quirky visuals and hours of entertainment.”
When Darknet launches on Tuesday, 7th March, PlayStation VR owners will be able to pick it up for $14.99 USD. For the latest updates from E McNeill, keep reading VRFocus.

All the VR Games Sony is Demoing for PlayStation VR at E3 2018
The presence of virtual reality (VR) at the biggest videogame event in the world, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018, tends to be a bit of a mixed bag. There will be indie developers showcasing their latest projects while the bigger studios put on a smaller display. That’s not the case when it comes to Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), with the company showcasing 14 PlayStation VR titles at its booth, with other compatible experiences elsewhere.
All of the titles available on the booth have been announced in some fashion, some only very recently like Beat Saber, and Space Pirate Trainer, whilst others like Blood & Truth were unveiled last year.
With the launch of the PlayStation Experience booking app the full list of playable VR videogames for PlayStation VR at E3 2018 are as follows:
Sony booth:
Evasion
Megalith
Firewall Zero Hour
Ghost Giant
Beat Saber
Space Pirate Trainer
Blood & Truth
ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission
Bow to Blood
Creed: Rise to Glory
Star Trek: Bridge Crew – The Next Generation
Tetris Effect
The Persistence
Vacation Simulator
Other booths:
Gungrave VR
VRFocus has previously played titles such as Archiact’s sci-fi first-person shooter Evasion, finding it to be one first-person title to keep an eye on and Creed: Rise to Glory on PC VR headsets, saying for the latter: “Survios has already established itself as one of VR’s premium content developers, with Creed: A Rise to Glory looking to continue that trend.”
Among the main three, high-end VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) PlayStation VR has the biggest and most prominent presence at E3 2018. Neither Oculus or HTC have booths dedicated to their headsets. Obviously, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive do feature at other booths, but there’s no official support from the manufacturers. This certainly goes in SIE’s favour as E3 now allows consumers to attended, offering dedicated PlayStation fans the opportunity to trial PlayStation VR, encouraging that temptation to purchase and increase its sizeable sales lead.
VRFocus will be at E3 2018 all week to bring you the latest news and announcements from SIE regarding PlayStation VR.

What to Expect at E3 2018: Sony’s PlayStation VR
The PlayStation VR has been a showcase piece for Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles, for two years running. Last year’s media briefing featured a segment which demonstrated dozens of titles in quick succession, including big hits such as Moss and new downloadable content (DLC) for Farpoint. This year, the heat is on to raise more interest in the PlayStation VR beyond that of the early adopters.
The PlayStation VR is arguably the most successful of all the head-mounted displays (HMDs) currently available. While it may not have outsold the Samsung Gear VR, it most certainly has a much bigger active install base. But what’s next? Those who were keen to get the device early-on have already jumped in, and so SIE need to bring a big new wave of titles to convince the naysayers that now is the time to jump into virtual reality (VR).
  New VR Games
We should expect a number of new titles at E3 this year as part of SIE’s media briefing, both first- and third-party. Indeed, the recent announcement of a PlayStation VR version of Archiact’s Evasion has started the ball rolling, and there’s likely to be many more on the way. Something new from Polyarc – currently assumed to be a second chapter for Moss – is expected, plus more information on the release of Blood & Truth and numerous other PlayStation VR titles that are considered missing in action.
Megalith
Originally expected in Q1 2018, Megalith hasn’t delivered any new information for some time. A new playable build at E3 2018 should be expected, plus hopefully some solid details on a release later this year. It wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see Megalith held back for a holiday season launch.
  Blood & Truth
And the same applies for Blood & Truth, also. After the hugely positive reaction to the spiritual predecessor – The London Heist featured in PlayStation VR launch title, PlayStation VR Worlds – Blood & Truth is looking set to be an influencer amongst new adopters of the PlayStation VR. SIE will undoubtedly want to time such a launch wisely, and will surely use E3 to build hype for the title prior to its launch later this year.
Golem
‘Golem will launch on 13th March 2018!’
Really? Then where is it? Nowhere, except maybe in SIE’s E3 plans. Highwire Games’ PlayStation VR adventure has been high on many early adopters ‘most wanted’ lists for quite some time, and so the rapid updating of information late last year built up the hope that it might actually see a release soon. Nearly six months later and we’ll still no closer to seeing an official launch. All we can do is hope that E3 will bring the news we want.
What to Expect at E3 2018: Ubisoft’s VR Games - Ubisoft still have two announced VR titles coming, will we see any new reveals at E3 2018?
What to Expect at E3 2018: Oculus VR - With new hardware out the door, surely we can expect a grand showing from VR pioneer Oculus?
What to Expect at E3 2018: Bethesda’s VR Games - Bethesda is likely to expand upon its VR success in 2018.
What to Expect at E3 2018: HTC Vive - Will we get a Vive Focus North American and European launch date announcement?

343 Industries Advertise Creative Director Role for Halo VR Experience
Last year 343 Industries, the developer behind the recent Halo installments – after taking over from Bungie – released a virtual reality (VR) installment of the famous franchise Halo: Recuit for Windows Mixed Reality headsets. While the excitement for a Halo videogame in VR was palpable, the experience turned out to be nothing more than a brief tech demo, instead of a fully fledged title everyone was hoping for. Now it seems as though the idea of Halo VR  hasn’t disappeared, thanks to an appearance of a job role.
Appearing on both 343 Industries career page and Microsoft’s Linkedin, the team have been looking for a Creative Director to help deliver an all new VR experience in the Halo universe.
The vacancy – which is now listed as no longer accepting applications – states: “Halo is known for its epic sci-fi worlds, its transmedia storytelling, and its heroic gameplay – VR brings the potential for a new level of immersion in our universe. We are looking for an inspiring individual to help us pave this new path in partnership with an external development studio.”
Under responsibilities the advertisement notes that the applicant will: “Help shape the creative vision and design of a VR experience in the Halo universe”. Going on to say that they will: “Work closely with an external development partner and internal team leads to direct the tone and timber of the project with an eye towards compelling character development, innovative narrative progression, and engaging interactions/gameplay in VR.”
This is certainly encouraging for all those Halo fans out there who have embraced VR over the last couple of years. The first thought would be towards Halo 6 having a possible VR element/support. While the entire experience would be great – it’s becoming more feasible in VR, just look at titles like Archiact’s upcoming Evasion or other first-person shooters (FPS) such as Doom VFR, Apex Construct or Island 359 – there’s also the possibility of a tacked on section like that found in Gran Turismo Sport.
As there’s going to be an ‘external development partner’ also working on the project the likelihood of this being a complete separate entity along the lines of Halo: Recruit is much more feasible.
If Halo VR does come to fruition then which headsets will it support? Windows Mixed Reality is the most likely yet there’s still the lingering question of VR on Xbox One X. Halo has always been the console series’ biggest IP – even if it’s spark has somewhat diminished in recent years – so having the videogame introduce VR to the console would certainly garner a lot of interest. Whatever happens, you can be sure VRFocus will be you any news relating to Halo in VR.
