Parable

Do the twins have a favorite human tradition? 

Cassia likes the tradition of gathering up the entire family to celebrate certain holidays. A close second is giving gifts on holidays, but turians have some holidays and special occasions like that, so it’s not strictly a human thing. I’d say that turians also gather as families, but not usually with everyone, extended family included. For them, that means everyone from the Normandy and their families joins in on the festivities and that’s not too usual for turians. Turians separate work and life, so it’s not often that they get close enough to fellow soldiers, subordinates, or superiors to end up having huge gatherings for holidays. That, and humans have more holidays that call for it than turians. Seriously, we humans celebrate everything, lol.

Being how they were raised, Damocles can’t really say he has experience to compare it to, but from what he’s learned of turian customs, he can say that he really likes how humans tend to embrace changes when compared to turians. Sure, there are still stubborn prejudices and whatnot, but a huge thing is the fact that even with such a powerful military presence, humans don’t actually force their people into mandatory service. We all know turians require at least some time in the military, but humans are like ‘oh, you want to study music? Well, here ya go. Have fun!’ while turian society would rather you serve your people in some way. Sure, Damocles went into a military of sorts with the Wraiths, but he’s happy that it was his decision to do so, not one forced on him and he has an ulterior motive in liking it because he knows that, had they been in turian society, his best friend and love, Aeson, would have had a hard life. He’s not only a traitor’s son, but he just isn’t cut out for combat of any kind despite Damocles’ every attempt to train him. Aeson’s just too passive in nature and Damocles knows with sobering certainty that his friend probably wouldn’t have survived combat if he was ever thrown into it. (Not much of a demand for fishermen in the military, so Aeson would’ve been forced into a position he wouldn’t have been comfortable in)

How often do they see Pop-pop when they’re adults and what’s that relationship like?

Enjoying travel as much as she does, Cassia sees Pop-pop quite often. Usually, if she’s around his neck of the woods, she’ll stop by. Sometimes they can meet on the Citadel or she’ll see him at his home on Palaven, but she’s also really careful not to directly attract attention to herself because of her family’s notoriety so if he says it isn’t safe to visit for whatever reason, she sticks to vidcalls. Their relationship is really close because she tends to follow a more strict code of morals than her brother. Sure, she doesn’t exactly follow rules, but Castis has long since realized that following regulations may not be in that family’s repertoire. Plus, I don’t think Cassia could ever have a bad relationship with someone even if she tried. 

Damocles is different, however. We all know how imposing he looks, and that attracts unwanted attention if he ever goes anywhere. Usually, he only visits Pop-pop when he can manage to hitch a ride on a Wraith transport to Palaven, Palaven being a bit of a safe place for the Vakarians thanks to Primarch Victus’ relation and subtle protection towards them. Damocles gets antsy at Pop-pop’s though, because he can’t do anything that may attract attention. He’s explored the area around Pop-pop’s home to the point he could probably walk it blindfolded and there’s only so many extranet games he can play by himself or with Aeson to keep him occupied in his downtime. He’s also a lot like his father in his rebelliousness and though Castis has cooled some to Garrus and Jane’s ways, they still butt heads at times. Damocles, in these cases, can actually be considered worse than his dad and, unlike Garrus who tries to keep the peace for the most part, Damocles won’t give as easily. Damocles is headstrong and lets emotion rule his thinking in almost every setting, so he’s nearly impossible to effect. It’s because of this that Castis, for once, keeps his stricter morals under check so as not to ruin the few chances he gets to see his grandson. 

What Castis’ take on his kids bonding to humans?

Honestly, after all the family has gone through, he’s just happy his kids are happy. He’s learned to accept that Garrus will always go against the grain in terms of turian culture and traditions because he’s learned the hard way after losing Valeria and going through the Reaper War that there could always be a day where it’ll be too late to reconcile with the idea of their differences. Solana’s relationship is much easier to accept because she and James are much more traditional (and he’s got experience with human family thanks to how different Jane is to everything he expected). Years ago, he would’ve put up a fight about it, but now he’s realized that it doesn’t matter the species so long as his children are happy. Life’s too short for pettiness, he’s come to realize, and family doesn’t always mean blood.

What are Arcellie’s opinion on Saren falling for Cassia?

Arcanus is just so damn relieved someone’s there to show his son the ropes in life, so to speak. He sees what being raised in a tank has done in terms of his son’s ability to fit into society and Cassia seems the perfect person to show him the good in actually interacting with other people outside of work. Saren makes it hard enough to get along with as stunted as he is already, so he needs that exact opposite in Cassia to balance it out and give Saren a real life he will enjoy, even if he doesn’t immediately know it.

Ellie thinks it’s really cute. She adores Cassia because she’s just so damn lovable and mature for her age. Ellie was initially really worried Saren wasn’t getting the concept of dealing with people on a personal level, but didn’t know how to go about getting him to open up. To tell the truth, she was actually worried about interacting with him at first because she remembered her colossal failure in a relationship with Arcanus in the beginning and didn’t want to cause a rift between herself, Arcanus, and Saren. She’s hesitant in relationships because she spent so much of her life in secret, so the fact that Cassia and Saren seemed to click from the very beginning is a huge sigh of relief because she’s eventually admitted to herself that she sees Saren as a kind of step-son, even with as untraditional as his ‘birth’ was. 

Does Saren think of Ellie as his mom?

Good question. I don’t think he’s ever called her ‘mother’ before or put that word to his feelings towards her, but he unintentionally treats her as one. Arcanus is his father in both genetics, but also in guidance and the shared personality they have, but Ellie is different for him. At first, he didn’t have any kind of emotion to associate with her besides an acceptance and a bit of gratitude because of what she was to his father. It didn’t help that Ellie was wary of what she should be for him too, but eventually, he begins to see Ellie as a person separate from his father and she gains confidence that she isn’t going to ‘mess this up’ because she’s so rusty with relationships. Saren now associates guidance of a different kind with Ellie. There’s just some things that a father can’t teach you and, in interacting with Ellie, he’s learned some things that come from having a mother. Sure, most of it is Cassia’s doing, but he’s learned how to love someone from watching his ‘parents.’ He knows how his father is because he technically ‘is’ his father, but he’s learned how to be tender and what devotion looks like from a different person in seeing how Ellie interacts with Arcanus. He actually goes to her at times when he wants to do something nice for Cassia but doesn’t want Cassia to learn of it. Between her and Jane, all his romanticism has pretty much been learned by his ‘mother’ and mother-in-law.

What is Castis’ opinion on humans?

As Primarch, he is wary of humans. Still so young to the whole of Eros and its politics, he thinks they are too demanding of attention and a place in the government (at least, that was before Sovereign) because it was like they came in and wanted a voice without actually proving they could handle the responsibility. We have to remember that their first act was to wage a small war with his people because they wanted to expand and didn’t think of diplomacy when the turians stood their ground, instead of seeing it as an invitation for battle. He still doesn’t trust many humans and sees undeserving arrogance in many dignitaries, but Jon and Garrus’ belief in him has helped Castis see the good in them. It’s why, after Sovereign’s attack, Castis reached out to King Stephan Hackett to propose trade lines between their peoples. He was happy to learn that the King was closer to Jon than Udina in thinking, so it’s helped him to be more open to humans when it comes to meeting individuals instead of a blanket view of them from what he sees of their representatives.

Did Nihlus tell Ashlin ‘I love you’ first?

Actually, he didn’t outright say it in a human way. Ashlin was the first one to put it to words, but he was courting her for a long time in a turian way with gifts and subvocals. They finally got to that point once he realized his attempts didn’t seem to be getting noticed and learned human poetry to impress her and express his feelings in a way she’d enjoy (she likes poetry in this AU). His poem is pretty much a love confession without saying the word, so it led to Ashlin finally putting the word out there in her response. Really, they were kinda idiots about the whole love thing in the beginning, lol

What is something that Jana does casually that Garrus finds incredibly hot?

Before they’re a pair, he has a weird interest in her hair as well as her eyes. He hasn’t seen many people with long hair like waves of fire or eyes that shift with the colors of the earth (her eyes are hazel). Like many fighters with long hair, she tends to keep it up or done so that it’s out of the way, but she’s just like any other woman and has to brush it. When she does, and he sees it, he’s almost entranced with the way it flows. Fire is powerful to Alysim and the image of someone running their fingers and a comb through it is almost unearthly.

Once they’re together, it’s her little touches that drive him absolutely insane. Turians aren’t touchy by nature and she usually wouldn’t be either in public, but she does it a lot as a way of grounding herself in this new reality. She doesn’t want to lose him like she did her husband, so she’s always reminding herself with touch and even kisses and after a life without any sort of partner to speak of, he’s starved for affection without even knowing it at first. Sure, he’s had touches from his family, but never a romantic partner, and once they’re a pair, they are both very touch-oriented in and outside the bedroom. It’s actually kinda cute how surprised he is by just how good being touched, hugged, and kissed feels even without it ever leading to sex.

3, 8, 15 for the oc asks please!

3. Have you ever adopted a character or gotten a character from someone else?

I actually have quite a few OCs that have come about from other people. The two most recognizable ones are Arcanus Reguix and Ellie Hunter. During writing Genesis, I put out the offer to include OCs under the condition that people realize I will technically own that rendition of them in the fics, so I have some characters that started as other peoples’, but the Parable versions became mostly my own.

8. Do you RP as any of your OCs? If you do, introduce one of your RP Ocs here!

Unfortunately, I do not RP anymore because it went sour with a friend I was RPing with. Damocles and Cassia came about from that because we needed some kids for Shakarian and I came up with them. Originally, it was two boys, but Cassia became a sort of tribute to my boyfriend because he names all his RPG characters Cassius. Aeson, too, came about through that RP and even his relationship with Damocles. A bad falling out ended my RPing however, but I couldn’t part with my twins and Damo’s cinnamon boyfriend.

15. Do you like to talk about your OCs with other people?

Of course! I can’t shut up about them! Shower me in opportunity and I’ll make you wish you hadn’t asked ;)

Character development ask 42 & 50 for the Vakarian twins? 94 & 95 for Arcanus?

Cassia and Damocles

42. What’s their greatest achievement?

Cassia

So far, she sees her greatest achievement as being able to show Saren how to start living. It’s a big step from coming out of a tank to actually be able to hold your own in life. Sure, he still needs some work socially, but he’s getting there thanks to her.

Damocles

Again, so far, his biggest source of pride is in besting his parents. Sure, it’s not much, but he looked up to parents all his life and he still does, but they trained him well and he’s surpassed them in skill. He’s learned how to best pretty much anyone at sparring and there isn’t a single biotic out there that can fight the way he does. It’s all thanks to his parents’ teachings and he prides himself on being more than ‘that weird hybrid freak.’

50. How does your character feel about their own mortality?

Cassia

Cassia knows people live and people die. The point is to actually live instead of letting your life pass you by.

Damocles

He’s much the same, only he’s much more centered on himself when it comes to living out his life. He wants to make the biggest bang and prove himself whereas she is happy enjoying little things like friendships, family, and exploring to her heart’s content.

Arcanus

94. Name three things most would not expect your character to be able to know.

He knows the birthdate of every close member of the Normandy family, even though turians don’t really think of it as a huge deal. He also knows the histories of every major world war from various species (as much as there is to find anyways and isn’t kept a secret). He knows of and really enjoys Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

95. Name three things most would not expect your character to be able to do.

Arcanus knows how to cook asari cuisine for Ellie, how to dance ‘properly’ as he’d put it, and his mother taught him how to tend to a garden.

I’m trying to hold on. It’s not good, but if I dwell more than I already am, I’m going to completely breakdown.

31. Pick one OC of yours and explain what their tumblr blog would be like (what they reblog, layout, anything really).

I think the most likely to have a blog would be Cassia. She’d be very active on social media, both with friends she already has and with those she makes over the extranet. She’s one of those people to have tons and actually be able to keep up with them all.

Her blog would be a mix of inspirational things, books, fashion of all kinds (though turian and human are her top reblogs), reblogs of important things to her friends (like funding requests, advertising their art, etc), art, and a few of her fandoms. She has a very active blog and is open to sharing anything for anyone so long as it’s overall message is a good one. She has no time for negativity and refuses to spread it.

41. Has anyone drawn fanart of your OCs? If yes, maybe show a picture or two here (remember sources & permissions!).

I have lots, actually! I think I’ll go with some actual ‘gifts’ though because I feel like it’d be cheating if I share ones I’ve commissioned or otherwise paid for.

First is the awesome gift @wafflesrock16 surprised me with a while back. It’s of my adult twins by the very talented @bethadastra .

The second fanart that immediately came to mind is another fanart of the twins, but this time their just little kids. Little cute kids! I had a reader link me to their deviantart, so I don’t know if they have a Tumblr (but I’ll amend it if they do).

42. Which one of your OCs would be the most interested in Greek gods?

Well, one is named after one, lol. Ares (from the co-authored fic with @mosaiccreme) named himself because he thought it was cool and he learned of human mythology because his first assassination after the fire was of a mythology professor.

If I had to pick one from Parable, it’d probably be Arcanus simply because he loves all things historical. He may work a lot, but he also has a lot of time to read since Ellie has taken it upon herself to force him to have some downtime. He doesn’t narrow his reading to just turian (though that is the first choice) and usually tends to have various books open at once, both physical and on a datapad.

48. OC who is a perfect cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure.

Aeson. No question. I love that turian and just how sweet he is. He doesn’t have a single bad bone in his body and his forgiving, passive nature often frustrates Damocles to no end. Aeson is a cold wash of calming water to Damocles and it’s just what everyone needs. He’s also probably the only adult turian who doesn’t know how to shoot a weapon. He just isn’t violent in any way.

26, 33, 36 for Saren and Arcanus?

26. Guilty pleasure

Arcanus loves the finer things in life but he’s not really all that shy about it. However, his guilty pleasure concerning that is that sometimes he likes to join Ellie when she sometimes gets desserts by ordering something decadent for himself. He doesn’t do it as much as she does and doesn’t have too big a sweet tooth, but he does sometimes have a craving for something sweet (and often way overpriced and pretentious)

Saren has that bad habit of working too much like his dad. Once Cassia gets some influence over him, though, he gets into binge reading mystery novels. He usually always figures them out before the big reveal, which Cassia thinks takes the fun out it, but he does enjoy them enough to have read them quite often. So much so that Cassia has bought him both hardcover and digital copies for reading when he’s either home or off on some job.

33. How have they changed over time?

Arcanus has learned to trust and think of other people again. It’s mostly Jane’s doing because she’d often force him into interacting with people, but Garrus had some say in it too. Sure, Ellie gives that final push, but Arcanus wouldn’t even have been so far into his openness to others if not for the Vakarians and his roles on the Normandy.

Saren has become less self-absorbed. He doesn’t do it purposely, but we all see how deep he is in his own world. Cassia has to practically haul him away from work most times and force him to interact with people, but it still takes a lot of active work from him. For a time, he doesn’t care to change, but once he starts to care more for Cassia, he starts to want to be a bigger part of her life and that involves interacting with at least some of the people she’s close to.

36. What are they like as a partner?

Arcanus is very meticulous and focused entirely on Ellie. He will do his best to rock her world every time they have sex and even in their day to day. He pampers her with little, but usually expensive things, and always makes her feel like a queen.

Saren is very similar to his father, but his youth does give him some desires of his own. Out of the bedroom, he too wants to do everything for Cassia to make her feel like royalty. It takes a while before he learns the value of getting unprompted gifts, but when he does, he eventually learns what best passes as a gift. In bed, Saren is a bit more dominant than his more laid back father, but he still follows Cassia’s lead most times.

OTP Asks

28. Who is the fussy eater and who will eat food even if they’ve dropped it on the floor?

Haha. I never considered this, but let’s see. I have a few fussy eaters. Arcanus and Saren would see themselves as too sophisticated for some foods, though Arcanus is a bit worse than Saren. He often eats food that looks like it’d do better on a magazine spread of fake foods than actually be eaten. Another fussy, though not as much, eater would be Cassia. I think she’s one to watch her figure even when she knows she shouldn’t let herself get carried away just because she sees movie stars and models with a certain body shape. She eats, thankfully, but maybe not so much junk food as others.

Eat off the floor, you say? Definitely Damo, lol. He’s like a black hole, so he definitely won’t let any food go to waste. As a kid, he used to do it all the time, but at least now he doesn’t drop food as much because he was definitely someone to quote the five-second rule.

42. Who sneaks in cookies in the shopping cart?

Most don’t really need to sneak stuff in, but I’d have to say that Jane is probably the biggest one to slip away and bring lots of junk food over in secret. It’s not that anyone would blame her for wanting it, but she does like the idea of treating it like she’s sneaking in contraband better than just grabbing it off the shelves. That, and she got the habit when the twins were kids and she snuck food in for both herself and the kiddos.

Osteogenesis Teaser

Yes, another one.

“Very well,” he starts, his voice steady and golden eyes scanning over their forms.  “We will begin with creating a barrier.  Then we shall test their strength before learning how to break another’s.”

“But…”  Cassia stops and looks aside, where in her brother apparently finishes the thought.

“How are we supposed to make one as strong as yours?  Isn’t yours supposed to be unbreakable?”

Arcanus purrs softly at their understanding and nods once.  “It is.  However, for your lessons, I will decrease its strength in relation to your current capabilities.  It would not do to train you both against odds not in your favor as you would not learn appropriately.”

The young girl hums as she seems to examine Arcanus with eyes he has always believed belong to a much older, much wiser individual.  “But we’ll never be as good.  What if someone else is like that?”

Arcanus glances between the two, his mandibles lifting before lowering in consideration of how to quiet such thoughts.  It won’t do to have them not expressing their full potential because they do not have the will to make the attempt because they believe they will do nothing but fail.  In his life, he hasn’t been in a position to teach another in any way that didn’t involve dealing with punishment for a failure by a subordinate, but these two are not his subordinates.

They are his family.

When he feels he has taken too long to respond, he relaxes and lays his free hand on her head.  “Do not compare yourself to the ability of others, but to who you were the day before.  Always strive to be better than your past self and you will become strong in your own way.”  He moves his hand to Damocles, adding, “Do not expect to excel in what someone else can accomplish, but pave your own way to success.”

Osteogenesis Teaser?  Well, alright then.

Arcanus could already hear the soft clinking coming from the kitchen to announce the twin’s completion of their breakfasts.  Why they insisted on eating the colorful chunks of nothing but sugar called Blast-Os still alludes him, but he might just be able to use that energy for today’s training session.  They may be only seven in Earthen years - Earth being their birthplace and, thus, easiest means of calculation - but Garrus has already begun to teach them how to shoot and their mother has begun biotics lessons.

While skilled in the matter of harnessing biotic power into a destructive force, Jane doesn’t have quite the amount of experience in teaching her children to hold a barrier.  If Arcanus is to let Cassia and Damocles onto the field, he will make sure they can form the strongest barrier within their capabilities.  It’s also less of a struggle with their parents when Jane herself admits any of her training involves offensive biotics and happily agrees to his own training.

Looping the last of his robes’ closures into place, Arcanus smooths the black fabrics before turning to return to the twins before they can become restless in his absence.  Admittedly, he is not suited to tend to children of any age without Elyse’s aid, but she seems to have left the house in search of something to do instead of watching the training.  Just as well, he considers, as she’s apt to disprove of his planned incentive, even if it holds no possibility of harming either child.  She is much more comfortable tending to the energetic children than he is.  He despises admitting any sort of inability after so many years of needing to remain at his best or risk being assassinated for his position, but these two Vakarian children have managed one thing even a Thresher Maw was unable to do.

These two children, small as they are at their age, leave him completely unprepared more times than he cares to admit.  Yet, he realizes, the feeling doesn’t create as much discomfort as he would have previously imagined.

A teaser for an ask prompt. *Whispers* @wafflesrock16

She knows her mate is awake by the soft slide of talons in her hair, the blunt point at their tips giving her scalp the occasional, tickling scratch as his actions loosen any tangles in her hair from sleep.  Arcanus seems to have never gotten over his fascination with the silky sensation of human hair and it always gives her a sense of pride to possess something so entrancing for him, yet so simple for herself.  A human would never get lost in the act of touching it quite like he does and she can tell the act is just as calming to him as it is her.  Her enjoyment comes from more than just the feeling of playing with her hair, but also in the sense of him relaxing and thinking not of work or what to do to pass the time in between work, but sating his curiosity.

Sometimes she's almost disappointed that's all it takes, that it's such a simple answer to the puzzle that is Arcanus Reguix, but it's hard to be frustrated when he's involved.  She'd much rather spend that energy trying to find what else gets his mind off of running the Wraiths.  Whatever she's doing seems to be working, as she's noticed a change in just how much time he puts to work since they all first arrived on Virmire.  He's still a workaholic, but, then again, she has no real place to talk when she still gets cabin fever if she's stuck on Virmire without a job for too long.  

Despite how much she's trying to learn how to relax and chose herself over work from Jane, she still feels that draw to get out, to slip into the secure targets to get valuable information and leave without a trance.  Perhaps it's just the rush that she can't quite put down, and she knows she won't just quit work, but she's made some improvements over the years.

No one ever said Rome was built in a day, afterall.
