WHY ARE THE DOORS SO TALL AND NARROW
Arbour Hill is derived from the Irish Cnoc an Arbhair which means "corn hill". The area was owned by Christ Church Cathedral during the medieval period and was used to store corn. The area first appears on a map in 1603 as "Earber-hill".

MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Danika practically lunged out of her seat as she woke up, the seatbelt being the only thing stopping her from nearly slamming into the overhead.
She could hear the woman’s voice echoing as she heaved heavily “It’s the only way to break my curse” slender fingers tugged at golden, red locks as the young woman steadied the rapid beating of her heart.
“Are you alright?” the elderly woman sitting next to her asked, lightly touching the younger woman’s shoulder. Danika attempted to smile “I’m alright, it was just a dream” the strawberry blonde turned to look out the plane window.
The dream changed from the ones she had had before. More and more details had become clearer than the previous night. Maybe she would finally get the answers she had been looking for when she arrived.
The plane had begun its descent while Danika slept but now more awake she could see wide ranges of green fields and lines of trees drew closer and closer, farther out she could make out some of the houses and roads.
She allowed herself to smile, feeling the excitement that had been overtaken by anxiousness finally bubble in her chest, maybe she could enjoy herself for once.
Golden red hair swayed as she bobbed her head to music coming softly from her earphones, Danika was one among many who were waiting for their luggage to come around, there was no hurry since her relatives were still on the way. This was the first time she would be meeting them in person, not just hearing their voices or looking at them through a screen, and now wished she’d brought something.
But this wasn’t a vacation, she had reasons for coming here.
The music immediately cut off, the caller ringtone replacing it. Assuming it was one of her relatives she took the call.
“Danika”
The young woman went stiff at the sound of his voice. Her name had been said that way before, coldly, in disappointment and exhaustion as if she was the cause of every problem they had. Her father said it that way often, and it looked like her brother would be picking up the habit.
“Why are you in Ir-”
She hung up on him. She gently pulled at the wires, letting the buds hang around her shoulders, the sounds around her faded until she could only hear the sound of her heartbeat booming in her ears. Numbness was all she felt, too many thoughts were racing around in her mind. Her brother knew she was here and if he were her father she would have a team of bodyguards coming after her as soon as possible, they would bring her home kicking and screaming if they had to then her father would punish her for it.
Her brother was not their father. However, she wasn’t sure that was a good thing either.
When she got out of the building, after finally snapping out of her thoughts and getting her suitcase, the young woman peered around others as she walked out. She was about to walk further down when someone yelled out her name. Turning, she quickly spotted a woman waving wildly at her, holding a sign with Danika's name.
The woman's long, dark hair tangled in the breeze as she made her way towards the younger woman, her light brown eyes brightened with glee.
Danika took in the woman's features as she moved closer and closer, all the young woman could do was stare. She was unsure how to handle this situation, on one hand they were family but on the other they were practically strangers. There was no time for an internal debate, she put on her usual, polite smile and extended her hand.
But before Danika could get a word out of her mouth, the dark haired woman enveloped her in a tight hug. Danika stiffened before forcing herself to relax, awkwardly patting her back in response.
“It’s so good to finally meet you” she grinned at me “I’m Cara” she began steering the younger woman to their car, still chatting gleefully while all Danika could do was nod. “Sean was so excited to see you after so long but there was a work emergency this morning” She laughed “You should have seen his face when he found out”
The name lit a lightbulb in her mind. Sean was one of her many cousins, a little older than her brother. She’d met him a few times when she was video chatting with her aunt, who had also tagged her on social media when he got married at the end of last year.
Sean and Cara lived in a one bedroom apartment in Arbour Hill, upon entering the unit the first thing Danika could see was the small dining table, pushed up against the wall, beyond it was the living area. To the right of the entryway was the kitchen, there were two doors, one beyond the kitchen and one next to the television stand, either one leading to the bedroom or the bathroom.
The apartment wasn’t grand, the furniture wasn’t ungodly expensive and the décor wasn’t massive or famous. Everything was the complete opposite, simple, clean and comfortable.
“Sean mentioned a few things about you and your brother. This probably isn’t what you’re used to but I hope you’ll be comfortable even though it’s only for a night”
Danika turned to say something but Cara was already in the kitchen fixing up the take-out she bought on the way home. Sean and Cara had opened their home to her and had been welcoming from the moment Cara saw her at the airport the least she could say something nice.
The strawberry blonde took a deep breath to calm her heart hammering in her chest.
“Uh, Cara?”
The dark haired woman turned to her “Hmm?”
This was it, just a few simple and kind words “I...uh...where’s the bathroom”
Ugh, coward
Tumblr media
Exhaustion had finally caught up with Danika by the end of lunch. She changed into more comfortable clothing, a loose fitting t-shirt, sweatpants and her favorite pair of fluffy flip-flops. Cara had shown her the bedroom, it minimalistic like the rest of the apartment. The bed was at the center, two nightstands on either side of the bed, the closet by the door and a small desk across from it.
Danika had just settled into bed for a nap but despite the physical exhaustion, her mind had too many thoughts for it to settle. Her brother’s call earlier was on the forefront of her mind, worried about what he might do or if he would do anything at all. Her father had used their family’s considerable resources to empower himself. Used his money to gain the favor of law enforcement, used his status to “befriend” other people of power and used the power to make sure people fell in line.
But he was gone now and Connor had taken his place. Connor was smarter, more charming and had quickly gained the employees’ respect and fear. However, his motivations still eluded her and he would never talk about family business to someone he considered a child, despite her age, someone who still believed in fairytales and curses.
Danika groaned and snuggled as deep as she could into her pillow, and eventually her body found rest, but in her mind, in her dreams, she found herself watching a missing part of an old family tale.
It always felt real when she woke up. Danika could feel the softness of the thin blanket beneath her fingertips, could smell the scent of gardenias from the bouquet that sat on the table and when she began to move around the small space it was as if she were really there.
Once exiting the bedroom, one would see a wooden, square table with chairs on all sides. A small kitchen, two tables and a chimney with a metal pot at the center of the firepit.
But it was always the door, behind one of the dining chairs, that drew her attention. The scene behind it changed everything she knew about the story that was passed down from one generation to another. The garden behind the cottage was lush and filled with all kinds of vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs growing in sections of the garden. However what really drew her attention was a little ways beyond the garden.
She saw a man and woman under the thick branches of the old tree as she moved closer. She could only assume they were the couple in the story, the prince and the healer torn apart by the prince’s choices.
“ I don’t understand why you keep returning when my answer will be the same as before” the woman asked softly, never looking away from the mounds of newly settled soil.
“ My wife is pregnant, she lives in constant fear because of what you have done” he told her “Thea wouldn’t want-”
The woman turned, finally facing him. Her amber eyes bright with fury, looking at him with such hatred causing Danika to flinch.
“You have no right to say her name” she seethed “You are the reason why she had to join her garden, why she and her child needed to be laid to rest beneath us”
Danika’s eyes widened then turned to the two mounds close to the tree, one was much smaller than the other and each had a garland of flowers that hung off a wooden marker, etched on each marker was what looked like a moonflower. It was clear to anyone who saw the markers that it was a burial mound.
The prince’s eyes darkened and his jaw tightened “What do you want?” he gritted his teeth.
“I want Thea’s torque” she said then her eyes moved to look at Danika’s “That’s the only way to break my curse”

Considering Kikara
Anonymous From the Voyage of The Author, the original tourist tract for the Tyrish Arm
Situated a few miles upriver from sheer cliffs, the city of Kikara is a field of simple domed white houses, arrayed across a wide area of difficult terrain and dense forest. The people are predominantly arboureal, exclusively moving and walking and working during the earlier years of their life. They live simple and almost monastic lives, with rigid rules and lifelong professions, as well as a noticeably large garrison spread across several of the guard posts on the hills above the city. Foreign citizens are permitted to visit to do business but any individual may stay in town no more than four weeks at a time, and there are no distinct foreign quarters in the city. It is a rather unpopular destination but one of the major keystones of regional trade and sea travel.
It’s regional significance comes from it’s bounty of two resources: manpower and timber. Despite their monastic way of life, a significant portion of the Kikaran population is want to leave the city and travel abroad, which local authorities seem to encourage to keep the population relatively small. Most of these arboreals are inexperienced and willing to sign any piece of paper waved in-front of them, making them the perfect well of manpower for pirates and international traders. Slavery is officially illegal with the penalty of execution, however slavers typically avoid such charges through legal loopholes and evasive language, as well as that plague upon society: the binding contract.
These tree-like folk are known to, at advanced ages of their lives, root themselves close to their old birthplaces. I observed that the rooting process is treated as a funeral, despite the process not killing any of the arboreals I saw planted. I would later learn that those who root are quickly injected with poisons that render them unable to act or think, effectively ‘killing’ them for all intents and purposes. This is the true nature of the forest surrounding the city, and these old rooted folk are re-used as strong and flexible wood,  their strong and fresh flesh being ideal for making repairs to oceanbound vessels.
I was glad to find passage away from the city before having to spend more than the one night there. Kikarans are so desperate to avoid the fate of their siblings in Garala that they would barbarise their old and their dead, and so eager to avoid meeting said siblings at all that they chose this dismal and weatherworn hole to eek out the rest of their existance.

Arbor Low
Tumblr media
If Avebury is my No.1 and Stonehenge is my No.2 my third favourite blessed site would be Arbor Low. This tiny henge sits in some of the most breath-taking surroundings you can imagine.
The site contains two important areas “Gib Hill” a 6000 year old Long barrow and the Arbour Low Henge which is around 4000 years old.
 The Long Barrow (4000BC)
Built in the Neolithic period this human-made hill was a burial place for those deemed worthy and the hill top was used for ceremonies. Some believe that it also served as a warning to keep other tribes away.
Tumblr media
Arbor Low Henge (2000BC)
After a couple of thousand years sun worship grow in popularity and the Henge was built nearby. A 90m oval earthen bank was constructed to house an inner platform around 55m wide with a 2m deep ditch. The Henge consists of around 50 off 2m tall stones, although we believe some may have originally been joined. It had two entrances to the North-West and South-South-East. In the centre 7 smaller blocks form a cove.
The side continued to be used through the Bronze Age but in the middle ages it is believed the stones of the henge were toppled by zealots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Nexus for magic
One of the most interesting theories for the site puts it as the Nexus of up to 50 lay lines. There is defiantly power there and it still calls to magic users to this day. The stones are littered with the signs of recent ceremonies (including mine).

Halifax-area wildfire 50 per cent contained as crews deal with record heat in forecast
A wildfire that began burning in the Upper Tantallon, N.S., area Sunday and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents is now 50 per cent contained.
David Steeves, a forest resources technician with the province’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said Thursday morning the size of the fire has also not grown -- and remains at 837 hectares.
While the update is good news, Steeves stressed it is still a “dangerous and volatile” situation.
"We are far from being out of the woods. Just because we have a level of percentage of containment does not mean the decrease and the importance of safety in this situation has lowered."
Temperatures are expected to reach the high 20s and low 30s for much of the Maritimes Thursday, and Steeves said crews are likely to deal with spot fires are flare-ups during that time.
"If we can get past this period, we have some precipitation on the way that we're looking forward to, so our fingers are crossed that we're going to receive that precipitation and help us a little bit. We need Mother Nature to get on side with us,” he said.
Halifax Fire deputy chief David Meldrum said the rain is only one variable at play in the decision to allow people to return to their homes.
Residents of the Indigo Shores area were allowed back to their homes Wednesday night after an evacuation order was rescinded.
“We will open more,” Meldrum said. “But we will do it in a controlled manner, and in a manner that ensures the safety of our residents.”
Meldrum added fire officials have completed their audit of the damaged and destroyed buildings in the Tantallon area, though he did not have exact numbers Thursday morning.
He also stressed the importance of residents registering with 311 so municipal staff can get in contact with them with information about their homes.

go gentle into that good night
Pairing: Julian Draxler/Matthias Ginter
A lil’ birthday present for @temsah that I started Saturday after the game, then forgot about, along with her birthday – I’m a terrible friend. I hope you had an enjoyable day, my dear! (And I hope this does at least a bit make up for me being a shit friend, even if I still have no idea what this is.)
The air smelt clean, fresh, as if the storm had swept all of the day’s heat and sultriness away. Now, almost all traces of the rain were gone. It was already dark outside and the stone tiles were cold underneath Julian’s feet. During the day, they would have been too hot to step on, but now, it was a calming feeling, grounding him, as if there were roots growing from his soles into the ground.
Most of the windows had already been dark, most of his teammates asleep, and not even the reception had been manned when Julian had snuck out five minutes earlier. Usually, they met up earlier, in one of their rooms, but tonight felt special, different.
It was almost midnight when he reached the spot. Matze had found it, six days earlier when he’d been on a stroll in one of their breaks. Adjoining to their hotel was a vineyard, and just at the border, when you walked up a steep hill, where the mowed lawns met the perennials, there was a little arbour. It was nothing much more than a wooden frame, overgrown with vines, and a wooden bench underneath it.
“During the day, you have the most amazing view over the valley,” Matze had said with a quiet awe in his voice that Julian hadn’t heard before. It had quickly become his favourite spot, the place he went where he wanted to think, clear his head, Julian knew, and he’d been honoured when a few days later, he’d asked him to come along, making it theirs.
It had been Julian’s idea to meet there tonight, now that it had been decided, far away from the curious glances of the staff and their teammates, from the road and the village.
He almost couldn’t make out Matze’s silhouette in the dark, and he blinked a couple of times before he realized that he was laying on the bench, staring up through the beams of the arbour, up to where the stars that were shining above them.
“Hey,” Julian whispered, and he could hear Matze’s jacket rustle as he sat up, extending a hand for Julian to take, pulling him down beside to him.
His body felt warm next to him, comforting and familiar in the dark of the night. Julian shivered as their arms touched and Matze searched for his hand with his own again before shuffling closer to him, laying his head down on Julian’s shoulder.
Julian breathed out slowly, savouring the feeling, his heart suddenly beating faster even if he was unable to tell why.
“It’s beautiful out here.” He said, staring up at the sky. He hadn’t seen that many stars in a long while. The leaves of the vines rustled, somewhere far away, a car soared over the streets.
Matze nodded against his neck, his nose cold, before he sat up straight again. It was him who leaned in first, claiming Julian’s lips with his own in a kiss as gentle as the night surrounding them.
Julian startled at first, but then he pressed closer. He framed Matze’s face with his hands, stroking over the browbones, the cheeks, his ears. The bench had still been wet underneath his fingertips, so different than the warmth of the skin they were greeted with now. Their noses brushed against each other as they tried to find that perfect angle.
He smiled when he felt Matze’s tongue trace over his top lip, granting him access as soon as he’s wrapped an arm around him, pulling him closer and closer until their bodies merged into one. He slipped out of his hoodie, placing it on the damp wood before gently lowering Matze down on the bench, feeling the younger one’s lips spread in a smile as he pushed the jacket down his shoulders, pulled up his shirt. Matze let out a little gasp when Julian moved on to his neck, pressing gentle kisses against the vibrating skin, licking over his jawline, pressing kisses underneath his chin.
It felt wrong to let go of him, but Julian craved for skin to touch skin, so much that he sighed when he finally lowered himself down on the blond’s body, enclosing him in his arms. Matze panted as he traced his hand down, down over his abs, his navel, before ghosting his fingers over his most sensitive area, savouring the quiet mewl Matze let out.
“Are you laying comfortably, babe?” Julian whispered, his voice unusually loud, drowned by the silence of the vineyard.
He couldn’t see Matze nod, but he felt it from where had placed his hand on the side of his face, thumbing over those cherished sharp cheekbones again and again. He leant back down with a smile, making them become one once more as he rid them of their last garments, making them a bed out of their own clothes before the night swallowed the two lovers whole.
Later, when they laid next to each other, their heartbeats slowly returning to a normal pace, finding warmth in the other’s embrace, with Matze’s jacket serving them as a tiny makeshift blanket, it was Matze who found his tongue again first.
“I can’t believe we’re actually going. Up until the last minute, I doubted it. Doubted that we could have this.”
Julian sighed, almost irritated before. pulling him closer, pecking him on the forehead.
“Better believe it. We deserve this. Both of us.”
Matze chuckled, amusedly, turning his head. His eyes shone bright in the darkness. “Guess I’ll have to get used to the thought that I won’t get rid of you for the next month.”
That startled a quiet laugh from Julian. “You wouldn’t be able to if you wanted to. I don’t intend to let you go again.”
And when they kissed under the stars for a last time that night before stumbling down the steps together, finding their way back to the hotel, they didn’t have to look at each other before deciding they’d spend the rest of the night sleeping in the same bed again.

Those Executed For Involvement In the Irish Easter Rising in 1916
Tumblr media
Francis Sheehy-Skeffington (died age 37)
Sheehy-Skeffington tried to organise a citizen police force to stop looting on the Tuesday of the Rising. Heading home, he was arrested in for no reason by British troops. Capt JC Bowen-Colthurst used him as a hostage while attacking the shop of Alderman James Kelly, at the top of Camden Street. Bowen-Colthurst destroyed the shop with grenades, and shot dead a 17-year-old boy before marching Sheehy-Skeffington and two journalists to Portobello Barracks. The next morning, they unaware they were going to be shot to death until moments before it occurred. They were executed the next morning on April 26th, 1916. Those involved attempted to cover up what they did.
Tumblr media
Thomas “Tom” Clarke (died age 58)
Clarke was stationed at headquarters in the General Post Office during the Easter Week. Clarke wrote on the wall of the house after surrender on April 29th, "We had to evacuate the GPO. The boys put up a grand fight, and that fight will save the soul of Ireland." He was arrested after the surrender. He and other rebels were taken to the Rotunda where he was stripped of his clothing in front of the other prisoners. He was later held in Kilmainham Gaol. He was court-martialled and sentenced to death. Before his execution, he asked his wife Kathleen to give this message to the Irish People:
"My comrades and I believe we have struck the first successful blow for freedom, and so sure as we are going out this morning so sure will freedom come as a direct result of our action . . . In this belief, we die happy."
He was then executed by firing squad on May 3rd, 1916.
Tumblr media
Patrick Pearse (died age 36)
Easter Monday, April 24th 1916, it was Pearse who read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic from outside the General Post Office, the headquarters of the Rising. Pearse was the person most responsible for drafting the Proclamation, and he was chosen as President of the Republic. Six days after he issued the order to surrender. He was court-martialled and executed by firing squad on may 3rd, 1916. He was said to be whistling as he came out of his cell to be killed. The day before his death he wrote:
"When I was a child of ten I went down on my bare knees by my bedside one night and promised God that I should devote my life to an effort to free my country. I have kept that promise. As a boy and as a man I have worked for Irish freedom. The time, as it seemed to me, did come, and we went into the fight. I am glad we did. We seem to have lost. We have not lost. To refuse to fight would have been to lose, to fight is to win. We have kept faith with the past and handed on a tradition to the future."
Tumblr media
Thomas MacDonagh (died age 37)
MacDonagh's battalion was stationed at Jacob's Biscuit Factory. Despite MacDonagh's rank and the fact that he commanded one of the strongest battalions, they saw little fighting. MacDonagh received the order to surrender on April 30th, though his battalion was prepared to continue. Following the surrender, MacDonagh was court martialled, and executed by firing squad on May 3rd, 1916. In his last message to the Irish people he wrote:
"I, Thomas MacDonagh, having now heard the sentence of the Court Martial held on me today, declare that in all my acts, all the acts for which I have been arraigned. I have been actuated by one motive only, the love of my country, and the desire to make her a sovereign, independent state."
Tumblr media
Joseph Mary Plunkett (died age 28)
Following the surrender Plunkett was held in Kilmainham Gaol, and faced court martial. Seven hours before his execution, he was married in the prison chapel to his sweetheart Grace Gifford, a Protestant convert to Catholicism, whose sister, Muriel, had years before also converted and married his best friend Thomas MacDonagh, who was also executed for his role in the Easter Rising. Grace never married again after his death on May 4th, 1816. Days before his sentence Plunkett had written in a letter to Grace:
"Listen--if I live it might be possible to get the Church to marry us by proxy- there is such a thing but it is very difficult I am told. Father Sherwin might be able to do it. You know how I love you. That is all I have time to say. I know you love me and I am very happy."
Tumblr media
Edward “Ned” Daly (died age 25)
Daly's battalion, stationed in the Four Courts and areas to the west and north of the centre of Dublin, saw the most harsh fighting of the rising. He was forced to surrender his battalion on April 29th by Patrick Pearse. He was executed by firing squad on May 4th 1916. Men in his battalion spoke of him as a good leader.
Tumblr media
Michael O’Hanrahan (died age 38)
O’Hanrahan was second in command of Dublin's 2nd battalion under Commandant Thomas MacDonagh. He fought at Jacob's Biscuit Factory, though the battalion saw little action other than intense sniping throughout Easter week. O'Hanrahan was executed by firing squad on May 4th 1916 at Kilmainham Jail. His brother, Henry O'Hanrahan, was sentenced to penal servitude for life for his role in the Easter Rising.
Tumblr media
William “Willie” Pearse (died age 34)
Willie followed his brother into the Irish Volunteers and the Republican movement. He took part in the Easter Rising in 1916, always staying by his brother's side at the General Post Office. Following the surrender he was court-martialled and sentenced to be executed. It has been said that as he was only a minor player in the struggle it was his surname that condemned him. However, at his court martial he rather exaggerating his involvement. On May 3rd, William was granted permission to visit his brother in Kilmainham Gaol and to see him for the final time. While Willie was en route, Patrick was executed first and they never saw one another again. Willie was executed on May 4th, 1916.
Tumblr media
John MacBride (died age 47)
In 1905 MacBride joined other Irish nationalists in preparing for an insurrection. Because he was so well known to the British, the leaders thought it wise to keep him outside their secret military group planning a Rising. He was in Dublin early on Easter Monday morning to meet his brother Dr. Anthony MacBride, who was arriving from Westport to be married on the Wednesday. The Major walked up Grafton St and saw Thomas MacDonagh in uniform and leading his troops. He offered his services and was appointed second-in-command at the Jacob's factory. After the Rising, MacBride, following a court martial under the Defence of the Realm Act, was shot by British troops in Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin.
He was executed on May 5th 1916, two days before his forty-eighth birthday. Facing the British firing squad, he said he did not wish to be blindfolded, saying:
"I have looked down the muzzles of too many guns in the South African war to fear death and now please carry out your sentence."
He is buried in the cemetery at Arbour Hill Prison in Dublin.
Executed two days before his 54th birthday on May 5th.
Tumblr media
Éamonn Ceannt (died age 34)
After the unconditional surrender of the 1916 fighters, Eamonn Ceannt was detained. While Ceannt was being picked for trial, volunteer James Couhlan remembers him being determined in looking after the welfare of “the humblest of those who had served under him”. Ceannt was tried under court martial as demanded by General Maxwell. May 2nd, Ceannt was sent to Kilmainham Gaol to face trial and execution.
Written a few hours before his execution from cell 88 in Kilmainham Gaol, he wrote:
“I leave for the guidance of other Irish Revolutionaries who may tread the path which I have trod this advice, never to treat with the enemy, never to surrender at his mercy, but to fight to a finish...Ireland has shown she is a nation. This generation can claim to have raised sons as brave as any that went before. And in the years to come Ireland will honour those who risked all for her honour at Easter 1916.”
Ceannt was held in Kilmainham Gaol until his execution by firing squad on May 8th 1916. He is buried at Arbour Hill.
Tumblr media
Michael Mallin (died age 41)
When Connolly was inducted into the Irish Republican Brotherhood in January 1916. On Easter Monday Mallin departed from Liberty Hall at 11:30am to take up his post at St Stephen's Green with his small force of ICA men and women. Upon arriving at the park they evacuated it, dug trenches, erected kitchen and first aid stations, and constructed barricades in the surrounding streets. Mallin planned to occupy the Shelbourne Hotel, located on the north-east side of the park, but insufficient troops prevented him from doing so. The next morning under intense machine gun fire Mallin ordered his troops to retreat to the Royal College of Surgeons on the west side of the park. The garrison remained in the barricaded building for the remainder of the week.
Mallin surrendered on April 30th 1916. The garrison was taken first to Dublin Castle then to Richmond Barracks, where Mallin was separated for court-martial. At his court-martial he downplayed his involvement. In his statement, Mallin stated:
“I had no commission whatever in the Citizen Army. I was never taken into the confidence of James Connolly. I was under the impression that we were going out for manoeuvres on Sunday . . . Shortly after my arrival at St Stephen's Green the firing started and Countess Markievicz ordered me to take command of the men as I had been so long associated with them. I felt I could not leave them and from that time I joined the rebellion."
Mallin was found guilty and transported to Kilmainham Gaol for his execution. He was executed May 8th 1916. The night before his execution he was visited in his cell by his mother, three of his siblings, his pregnant wife and their four children. In his last letter to his wife, who was pregnant with their fifth child, Mallin said:
"I find no fault with the soldiers or the police [I ask you] to pray for all the souls who fell in this fight, Irish and English . . . so must Irishmen pay for trying to make Ireland a free nation."
He wrote to his children:
“Una my little one be a Nun Joseph my little man be a Priest if you can James & John to you the care of your mother make yourselves good strong men for her sake and remember Ireland”
His funeral mass took place at the Dominican Church in Tallaght on May 13th, 1917. People from the procession clashed with police outside the church with two policemen injured.
Tumblr media
Con Colbert (died age 37)
In the weeks leading up to the Rising, he acted as bodyguard for Thomas Clarke. During Easter Week, he fought at Watkin's Brewery, Jameson's Distillery and Marrowbone Lane. They were marched to Richmond Barracks after surrender, where Colbert would later be court-martialled. Transferred to Kilmainham Gaol, he was told on Sunday May 7th he was to be shot the following morning. He wrote no fewer than ten letters during his time in prison. During this time in detention, he did not allow any visits from his family; writing to his sister, he said a visit "would grieve us both too much".
The night before his execution he sent for Mrs. Ó Murchadha who was also being held prisoner. He told her he was "proud to die for such a cause. I will be passing away at the dawning of the day." Holding his bible, he told her he was leaving it to his sister. He handed her three buttons from his volunteer uniform, telling her "They left me nothing else," before asking her when she heard the volleys of shots in the morning for Éamonn Ceannt, Michael Mallin and himself would she say a Hail Mary for the souls of the departed. The soldier who was guarding the prisoner began crying according to Mrs. Ó Murchadha, and recorded him saying "If only we could die such deaths."
Colbert was shot by firing squad the next morning on May 8th 1916.
Tumblr media
Sean Heuston (died age 25)
Heuston was the Officer Commanding of the Volunteers in the Mendicity Institution on the south side of Dublin city. Heuston was to hold this position for three or four hours, to delay the advance of British troops. This delay was necessary to give the headquarters staff time to prepare their defences. Heuston was arrested after the surrender and transferred to Richmond Barracks. O May 4th 1916, he was tried by court martial. May 7th 1916, the verdict of the court martial was communicated to him that he had been sentenced to death and was to be shot at dawn the following morning.
Prior to his execution he was attended by Father Albert in his final hours. Father Albert wrote an account of those hours up to and including the execution:
“…We were now told to be ready. I had a small cross in my hand, and though blindfolded, Seán bent his head and kissed the Crucifix; this was the last thing his lips touched in life. He then whispered to me: ‘Father, sure you won’t forget to anoint me?’ I had told him in his cell that I would anoint him when he was shot. We now proceeded towards the yard where the execution was to take place; my left arm was linked in his right, while the British soldier who had handcuffed and blindfolded him walked on his left. As we walked slowly along we repeated most of the prayers that we had been saying in the cell. On our way we passed a group of soldiers; these I afterwards learned were awaiting Commandant Mallin; who was following us. Having reached a second yard I saw there another group of military armed with rifles. Some of these were standing, and some sitting or kneeling. A soldier directed Seán and myself to a corner of the yard, a short distance from the outer wall of the prison. Here there was a box (seemingly a soap box) and Sean was told to sit down upon it. He was perfectly calm, and said with me for the last time: ‘My Jesus, mercy.’ I scarcely had moved away a few yards when a volley went off, and this noble soldier of Irish Freedom fell dead. I rushed over to anoint him; his whole face seemed transformed and lit up with a grandeur and brightness that I had never before noticed.”
Father Albert concluded:
“Never did I realise that men could fight so bravely, and die so beautifully, and so fearlessly as did the Heroes of Easter Week. On the morning of Sean Heuston's death I would have given the world to have been in his place, he died in such a noble and sacred cause, and went forth to meet his Divine Saviour with such grand Christian sentiments of trust, confidence and love.”

Thomas Kent (died age 50)
During the Easter Rising, the Kent residence was raided in a gunfight lasted for four hours. Eventually the Kents were forced to surrender. Thomas and William was tried by court martial on the charge of armed rebellion. His brother was acquitted, but Thomas was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad in Cork on May 9th 1916. He was buried in the grounds of Cork Prison.

Sean Mac Diarmada (died age 33)
September 1915, he joined the secret Military Committee of the IRB. In 1914 he said:
"the Irish patriotic spirit will die forever unless a blood sacrifice is made in the next few years.”
Due to his disability, Mac Diarmada took little part in the fighting of Easter week, but was stationed at the headquarters in the General Post Office. Following the surrender, he nearly escaped execution by blending in with the large body of prisoners. He was eventually recognised by Daniel Hoey of G Division. Following a court-martial on May 9th, Mac Diarmada was executed by firing squad on May 12th. In his final letter he wrote:
"Miss Ryan, she who in all probability, had I lived, would have been my wife".
She and her sister, Phyllis also visited Kilmainham Gaol before his execution. Before his execution, Mac Diarmada wrote:
"I feel happiness the like of which I have never experienced. I die that the Irish nation might live!”

James Connolly (died age 47)
Connolly considered the rest of the leaders too bourgeois and unconcerned with Ireland's economic independence. During the Easter Rising, Connolly was Commandant of the Dublin Brigade and was de facto commander-in-chief. Following the surrender, he said to other prisoners:
"Don't worry. Those of us that signed the proclamation will be shot. But the rest of you will be set free."
Connolly was not held in gaol, but in a room at the State Apartments in Dublin Castle, which had been converted to a first-aid station for troops recovering from the war. Connolly was sentenced to death by firing squad for his part in the rising. On May 12th 1916 he was taken by military ambulance to Royal Hospital Kilmainham, across the road from Kilmainham Gaol, and from there taken to the gaol, where he was to be executed. Visited by his wife, and asking about public opinion, he commented:
"They will all forget that I am; an Irishman."
Connolly had been so badly injured from the fighting but the execution order was still given and he was unable to stand before the firing squad; he was carried to a prison courtyard on a stretcher. His absolution and last rites were administered by a Capuchin, Father Aloysius Travers. Asked to pray for the soldiers about to shoot him, he said:
"I will say a prayer for all men who do their duty according to their lights."
Instead of being marched to the same spot where the others had been executed, at the far end of the execution yard, he was tied to a chair and then shot. His body (with other leaders) was put in a mass grave without a coffin. The executions of the rebel leaders deeply angered the majority of the Irish population, most of whom had shown no support during the rebellion.

Sir Roger Casement (died age 51)
October 1914, Casement sailed for Germany via Norway. Casement spent most of his time in Germany seeking to recruit an Irish Brigade from among more than 2,000 Irish prisoners-of-war taken in the early months of the war and held in the prison camp of Limburg an der Lahn. His plan was that they would be trained to fight against Britain in the cause of Irish independence. Casement did not learn about the Easter Rising until after the plan was fully developed. The German weapons never landed in Ireland; the Royal Navy intercepted the ship transporting them.
Casement departed Germany in a submarine. In the early hours of April 21st 1916, three days before the rising began, the German submarine put Casement ashore. Suffering from a recurrence of the malaria, and too weak to travel, he was discovered at McKenna's Fort and arrested on charges of treason, sabotage and espionage against the Crown.
"He was taken to Brixton Prison to be placed under special observation for fear of an attempt of suicide. There was no staff at the Tower [of London] to guard suicidal cases."
At Casement's highly publicised trial for treason, the prosecution had trouble arguing its case. Casement's crimes had been carried out in Germany. During the trial, Casement’s personal diary detailed his homosexual encounters was uncovered. The British government circulated fake reports to portray Casement as a sexual deviant. Casement tried to appeal the violation of his human rights and against his conviction and death sentence. On the day of his execution, Casement was received into the Catholic Church at his request. He was attended by two Catholic priests. One said of Casement that he was:
"a saint… we should be praying to him [Casement] instead of for him".
Casement was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London on August 3rd 1916. His last word was “Ireland”.

10 Signs We’ve Been in South London Too Long
South London, we love you. We love your vibrant mix of cultures. We love your independent businesses, your nooks and crannies and even your giant hills. And who cares if the Tube only runs through part of you? Why would we want to leave anyway?
Here are ten signs that maybe you’ve been in South London a bit too long.
We’ve become smug ‘art’ folk
We like the Tate, but it's a bit mainstream for us  – for a more eclectic mix of upcoming and seasoned artists, we much prefer the South London Gallery, 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning in Herne Hill, or the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Camberwell’s annual Arts Festival is a must-see for local talent.
We have a collection of kooky objects bought from independent shops
Nothing we like more than moseying around a quirky shop or two, and South London has plenty – take the Indigo Tree on Streatham High Road, which is stocked to the brim with weird and wonderful gifts.
We’ve spent way too much money at the market
When the street food is this good, it’s hard not to keep going back – The street markets in Brixton, Herne Hill and North Cross Road are our South London faves.
We’re always on the lookout for a good pop-up
We adore how South London’s retail scene is constantly changing. Pop Brixton showcases the most exciting independent businesses from Lambeth and Brixton. Check out late-night parties at Lewisham’s Model Market, the bustling flea market at Vinegar Yard or seemingly endless food options at Mercato Metropolitano.
Speaking of food, we’ve tried it all
From a world-beating roast at The Cherry Tree in Dulwich to a fragrant Thai delicacy at the Begging Bowl in Peckham, South London plays host to a feast of delicacies around the world.
…And we love something to wash it down with
There are too many watering holes to name, but here are a few. Try the Half Moon in Herne Hill for live music, the Hope & Anchor in Brixton for an uber-trendy garden or The Crown & Greyhound or the Herne Tavern in Dulwich do a fantastic roast.
We’re obsessed with butterflies
Originally spotted on Camberwell's Cool Arbour Lane (now Coldharbour Lane) in 1748, the Camberwell Beauty has since become a bit of a mascot for the area, with murals of the insect dotted around and several places named after it. What’s more, in East Dulwich you’ll find the Horniman Museum’s Butterfly House, home to hundreds of butterflies in an indoor tropic garden.
We’ve made friends with the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace park
We’re a big fan of visiting Crystal Palace with someone who’s never been and clocking their reaction (“Is that a stegosaurus?”). Aside from the park these beasties call home, South London has some of the best-hidden gardens and green spaces in London, as well as the biggest and best parks to relax and unwind in.
We’re addicted to popcorn now cinemas are opening up
For cheap and cheerful vibes (£5 a ticket) give Peckhamplex a whirl, or you can head to the Ritzy Picturehouse – the renowned mecca for film lovers. Or if you fancy watching an arty film in a railway arch, Whirled Cinema is worth a look.
We know when we’ve strayed too far from home thanks to the work of Lionel Stanhope
Yes we have our very own Bansky. Lionel Stanhope is a fan favourite on the streets of South East London and his noteworthy street art has transformed historic railway bridges across our stomping ground of the capital. From Herne Hill to Hither Green, you’re never too far from a Stanhope masterpiece.
We prefer the bus
Fair enough, the underground isn’t as present here as in North London – but transport is still fantastic in South – and anyway, who doesn’t prefer the scenic route?
We’ve set up an independent estate agency to get people to move here
Could there be a bigger sign we’ve been here too long? We don’t think so.
