Medjoola Date Day
Medjool Date Day takes place on February 4 yearly and serves the purpose of highlighting the benefits of the Medjool dates. Originally a Middle-Eastern fruit, Medjool dates made their way to the U.S in the 18th century, and since then, they have reigned in the hearts of the people. With a hint of caramel flavor, the dates are sweet, delicious, and one of the healthiest snacks on the market nowadays. They are also great for energy and can do wonders for people who are trying to cut down on the consumption of artificial sugar.
History of Medjoola Date Day
Medjool dates, like many other delicious fruits, have existed in this world for centuries. Though dates can be traced back to around 5000 to 6000 B.C., it took some time to reach different parts of the world. This was only possible with the technological evolution in transport, as the fruit was transported to different regions of the world. The Medjool dates, originally from Morocco, were brought to Nevada in 1927. From there, the plantation grew in abundance. Today, it is one of two date varieties grown in the U.S. And yes – people are really fond of this fruit.
Medjool dates were introduced into America by Walter Swingle in the 20th century. Swingle was assigned by the U.S government to identify some exotic crops around the globe, and after the researcher discovered dates, he transported them to America. During that time, however, not many were familiar with dates. This was, after all, a fruit they hadn’t heard of before. But as globalization happened and different cultures were brought to the forefront, people came to recognize dates for the delicious fruit they are. One of the main events that added to the popularity of dates in America was the annual date festival that started in 1921.
Today, dates are eaten by people of all ages, for their delicious taste as well as the numerous health benefits linked to them. A 2021 study reveals that Medjool dates are a good source of phenolic compounds.

Bisous.

Tumblr media
Sample of YOLO daily cycling tours:
Δ Madaba – Cycling to Dead Sea Via Mount Nebo: Transfer to Madaba, the City of the Mosaics. Madaba is the most important Christian centre in Jordan and best known for its Byzantine mosaics. The most important of these is the sixth century mosaic of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, which covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox church of St George. This morning we can marvel at its detail and natural colour.
Today’s ride starts with a 4.3mi (7km) mild ascent up to Mount Nebo, reputedly the burial site of Moses. We take a pitstop at the top for a spectacular view over the valley below. From here it’s a fantastic descent to the shores of the Dead Sea. Parts of this descent are quite steep but support will be at hand and you can take your time. We follow the coast on a smooth, paved surface to Suwaima where we can change and take a float in the waters.
You will need to be in Madaba to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. Distance: 14 KM / Time: 3 hours / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 100%
Δ Madaba Cycling to Mukaweir:
Within an hour’s drive from Madaba along the picturesque Kings’ Highway, is Mukawir (Machaerus), the hilltop stronghold of Herod the Great. Upon Herod’s death, his son Herod Antipas inherited the fortress and it is from here that he ordered John the Baptist to be beheaded after Salome’s fateful dance of the seven veils. The 1st Century AD Roman-Jewish historian, Josephus, identifies the awe-inspiring site of Machaerus (modern-day Mukawir) as the palace / fort of herod Antipas, who was the Roman-appointed ruler over the region during the life of Jesus Christ. It was here, at this hilltop fortified palace, overlooking the Dead Sea region and the distant hills of Palestine and Israel that herod imprisoned and beheaded John the Baptist after Salome’s fateful dance. “he was beheaded after Salome’s fateful dance” Mathew 14:3-11. Like it’s sister site of Masada on the opposite side of the Dead Sea, Machaerus was also the scene of a Roman siege during the first Jewish revolt against Rome.
you will need to be in Madaba to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. Distance: 33 KM / Time: 3-4 hours one way. / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 100%
Δ Petra cycling Wadi Araba through Little Petra:
Today’s ride starts from Petra, Enjoy a stunning 25 kilometre descent, dropping around 900 metres on a little-used winding country road through the dry mountains of Wadi Araba into the lush greenery of the Jordan Valley. The views on the way down are stunning! We will get back to Petra Using the Bus.
you will need to be in Petra to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. Distance: 25 KM / Time: 3 hours. / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 50%, Off Road 50%
Δ Dead Sea Cycling to Wadi Mujib (Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib ) – Back to the Dead Sea: Today’s ride starts from Dead Sea, along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. The road is mostly flat but here and there we encounter long undulations. The views are very special with the Dead Sea on our right with Israel’s Desert visible on the other side of the Dead Sea, and the colourful hills of Moab, interspersed with clusters of palm trees and oases on our left. we stop at Wadi Mujib, proudly called the ‘Grand Canyon of Jordan’. The spectacular chasm is also significant as the historic boundary between the ancient Amorites (to the north) and the Moabites (to the south). Moses is believed to have walked through Wadi Mujib, then known as the Arnon Valley. The King’s Highway crosses the wadi’s upper reaches, while its lower reaches fall within the Mujib Biosphere Reserve – normally accessed from the Dead Sea Hwy.
The Siq Trail is a popular hiking route within the Wadi Mujib Nature Reserve, located along the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. The trail takes you through a narrow, deep gorge, offering a unique and breathtaking experience. As you start your hike, you’ll be immediately immersed in the natural beauty of Wadi Mujib. Towering sandstone cliffs surround you, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. The sunlight filters through the cracks, creating fascinating patterns on the rock walls. One of the highlights of the Siq Trail is the opportunity to wade through water. The trail follows a riverbed, and at times, you’ll find yourself walking in shallow water. Be prepared to get wet and wear appropriate water shoes or sandals that provide a good grip.
you will need to be in the Dead Sea to start the cycling or we will arrange transportation for you to get you there. This daily cycling can be done during this period (01. April – 31. October) Distance: 35 KM / Time: 3-4 hours. / Dificulty: Moderate / On Road 100%

I would like to share with you my beginning of my vacation stay in Jordan, whose first city for stays & vacations is Aqaba! Aqaba is a port city in Jordan located on the edge of the Gulf of Aqaba, adjacent to the Red Sea. Inhabited since 4000 BC. AD, it houses the fort of Aqaba, dating from the Islamic era, and the archaeological museum located nearby. Its seaside resorts are popular with windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts. The region is particularly suitable for scuba diving, as it has remarkable dive sites such as the Yamanieh coral reef in the Aqaba Marine Park, south of the city !

“It’s Aqaba, not Aquaba” but it maybe should be Aquaba?
Tumblr media
After our adventures in the desert we were off to the port town of Aqaba! Aqaba has been played an important role in the history of the region; it was an important stop during trade routes from the 10th century BCE onwards and the location where Ottoman forces were ousted during the Arab Revolt. From our view from our room we were able to see the coastlines of Egypt, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, which shows how this is a packed area of the Red Sea. I guess some of the country borders were drawn arbitrarily by Britain after WWI, so in 1965 Jordan’s King Hussein made a trade with the Saudi Arabian government: 6,000 km of Jordanian desert for 12 more km of coastline. This deal has worked out for Jordan since this area serves important tourist and trade functions. It’s also where a lot of Jordanians and other travelers from the area come to vacation.
We rolled in dusty from the desert to our really nice hotel, the Al Manyara Resort, looking like the Beverly Hill Billies. Immediately our man Paul (the concierge) took care of us with a towel, coffee, and a juice drink. We were able to chill in the beautiful intricately styled lounge while the check in procedure came to us? This kind of fanciness was new to us, but welcome after doing some intense sightseeing on the days before.
Tumblr media
From our room we had a view of the turquoise sea, the mountain ranges, and the pool. We got lunch at the hotel and accidentally ordered some delicious fish that ended up looking like an art piece. Then guy AJ went for a swim and I rested. For dinner we ordered room service (which I think we’ve only ever done one or two times before ?) but it was really tasty & included HOMEMADE pasta. We watched the sunset from our room and then watched a ridiculous movie on tv [guy AJ edit: Employee of the Month starring Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson, I enjoyed it]. The critics did not.
Tumblr media
The next morning, after the best buffet breakfast ever (with a wall of homemade doughnuts?!) we went out to make up for being lazy the day before and explore. We saw the remnants of the ancient seaport, walked along the beach, and saw the fort that was a key player in the Arab revolt. It was closed for renovations, which was a common theme through out our walk in Aqaba. It seemed as if a good chunk of the city is under of construction, including pieces of our awesome hotel. This also meant that our 2018 guidebook was already out of date as we were unable to find the other places that we looked for, including a fair trade shop, the oldest church and a snorkeling agency. However it did mean that we were able to see the city! We were happy about this until it got up to 110 degrees, and by then we just wanted to get back to our hotel’s aircon.
Tumblr media
After that, guy AJ coordinated a boat excursion with our hotel. We took a dip in the sea while we waited and then were ferried from our hotel to the main boat. AJ and I were the only couple on this cruise, which we noticed later after realizing that almost everyone else belonged to these big families. There were tourists from Egypt, Las Vegas, and more, and it was really fun to see the group dynamics of all the kids getting excited about the boat and the fish (or “SEMEC, SEMEC SEMEC” as I quickly learned). The kids also got a kick out of guy AJ trying to speak in Arabic, and in his words “he enjoyed getting to converse with people who spoke at his fluency level.”
Tumblr media
We didn’t go far out (only 12 km of coastline so if you go too far you’re in another country), but we got to see the Japanese Garden (unique coral transplanted by Japanese scientists) as well as a sunken ship from the 80s. Then we did a really pretty snorkeling excursion! After that was a boat cooked barbecue, with delicious fish (although hopefully not the ones we just saw...). On the way back was a dance party where Super Mario showed up? It was very random but very fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After dinner we came back to our hotel and tried to order room service again. We tried to just order a scoop of ice cream but misunderstandings ensued and we somehow ended up with four desserts, which I’m sure reinforced the waitstaffs opinions of Americans ;P .
Tumblr media
Aqaba was beautiful and relaxing- just what we needed.
With much love and semecs,
The AJs

Today we headed out to explore Aqaba. First we stopped at the site of the original settlement here, Ayla, and saw the ruins of a mosque as well as other building walls. We then walked along the beach to the Aqaba Fort which the British partially destroyed during WWI. Then we stopped for lunch at Alibaba for some amazing hummus with lamb, spicy Turkish salad (more very spicy condiment than salad) and fried fish with tomato sauce over rice. It was all excellent. Finally, we decided against Romero at the Royal Yacht Club and instead were tempted by the Thanksgiving menu at the hotel. While watching a belly dancer, S enjoyed the turkey and I had the sea bass, but what really stood out (besides the belly dancer 😉) was the middle course of shrimp risotto. Fun day in Aqaba.
