Made a very quick D&D NPC generator for when you need to find a quick answer to "so who's this merchant/librarian/blacksmith/tavernkeep".

The fantasy races in the list and the stats there are based on 5th edition D&D, but since this is just for inspiration, just replace with something analogous to your setting or ignore entirely. Ta-dah!

Danny Is An Alternate Version Of Ra's Al Ghul And Flash Already Called Dibs On Adopting Him

Danny In All His Sleep Deprived Slightly Scuffed Up From A Fight Glory Is On His Way To Clockworks Tower To Hopefully Get A Nap And Maybe Some Homework Done When A Natural Portal Opens Up In Front Of Him And Proceeds To Unceremoniously Drop Him In The DC Verse Just Outside Of Central City Before Promptly Closing Leaving A Tired Danny Behind In A Run Down Abandoned Parking Lot.

It's Times Like This When Danny Regrets Putting Off Learning How To Make His Own Portals, Cause Now He Is Very Much Stuck For The Foreseeable Future And He Has No Idea Where Or When He Is. Luckily For Him However Central City Isn't Too Far Away, Unlucky For Him However Is That Once In The City He Realizes This Isn't His Dimension. He's Pretty Sure He'd Remember Something Called The Justice League.

So What Do You Do When Supernatural Bullshit Fails You? You Fall Back On Your Mad Scientist Roots And You Make A Portal Gun. So That's Exactly What Danny Plans To Do.

Unfortunately Staying Alive And Building Questionably Safe Portal Technology Requires Money And Supplies, So He Ends Up Wandering From City To City Doing Odd Jobs/Fixing Up Busted Tech For Cash Or Unwanted Electronics For His "Operation: Get Home" Needs. This Obviously Ends In A Few Superhero Encounter Shenanigans.

Though He Always Ends Up Back Near Central City, Both On The Off Chance The Natural Portal Will Open Up Again And Because Out Of All The Superheroes That Apparently Exist In This Universe The Speedsters Are His Favorite (Red Robin Is Solidly His Second Favorite Ever Since The Gotham Vigilante Gave Him A Large Coffee Filled With Enough Caffeine To Kill A Man).

Unbeknownst To Danny However Is That Every Hero/Vigilante He Has Encountered Has Come To At Least One Of The Following Conclusions; 1. Run Away Meta Who Is In Desperate Need Of A Good Meal/Adoption Bait. 2. Possibly Red Robin/Tim Drake Clone 3. A Good Kid But Could Possibly Be A Future Rouge If Left Unsupervised. 4. Did Bats Get A New Kid And Why Is He Here?

All Flash Knows Is That He Saw The Kid First And Therefore Has Dibs. Suck It Bruce.

Fast-forward A Few Months And Danny Gets Hurt During A Rogue Attack While Trying To Help Some Civilians Get To Safety (Old Hero Habits Die Hard (Ha Die Hard) And All That Jazz) And He Nopes Out Once Everyone Is Safe And When The Paramedics Are Busy With Other People Unaware He Left A Blood Sample Behind.

One DNA Test Brought To You By Paranoid Bat Concerns Of A Possible Red Robin Clone Later And They Find Out That Dannys DNA Matches One Ra's Al Ghul.

They Now Think Danny Is An Escaped Ra's Al Ghul Clone.

Well he's a horse, right? I think the nightmare portfolio might just be a pun.

Out of all the Daemon harbingers

Geon seems the most disjointed. His title is The Dancing Fiend but he's not associated with music in any way. His domains are related to nightmares quartering and trampling, but his obedience involves taking drugs, and has a bonus related to mounted combat.

It all feels so, disconnected. I wish he was expanded on because he needs SOMETHING to make all this make sense.

There's more than a few deities and demigods whose titles don't quite match their portfolio, and these usually fixed or retconned later, such as Braismois going from the Toxic Quill to the Silent Quill. In this case, though, his Dancing Fiend status is likely owed to the fact that he prances merrily across battlefields, because he's a giant flaming centaur in service to Szuriel and helps train her mounted fighters, which I think handily molds his disjointed bits together! He grants bonuses to mounted combat because that's his job, but he's also patron of horse-related deaths like quartering and trampling, which is likely how he personally met his end.

The only bit that sticks out is the nightmares, I'll admit.

Blade Ward is an awful spell. Just look at it

You sacrifice your whole action to do nothing. This is a "holding on for dear life" spell, which is not fun, because when you cast it it means you've committed to either running away (at regular speed, because most characters now can't dash this turn) or just - standing around and getting clobbered. Which doesn't feel fun.

I think you could either

Make it a much higher level spell but then change the casting time to a bonus action

Or keep it as a cantrip (maybe 1st level?), but change the target to "an ally within x feet" and not allow you to cast it on yourself, meaning now your spell caster can help the melee tank stay alive a little easier

I'm not a fan for multiple reasons, one of them being that it actively punishes the player for having a high spell save DC - which is something they should strive to have in all other circumstances.

On top of that, it's just Vicious Mockery with a vastly higher damager potential and no sideeffects (VM is a scaling d4 and disadvantage on the next attack roll on a failed save).

If you compare the damage potential with the cantrip Poison Spray, which is also a scaling d12 (but a Con save, which is a lot more common), notice how the range on PS is only 10 ft, compared to the 60 ft your player wants!

If it's the "terrible joke" part they really love - again, they could just use Vicious Mockery for that. And take the chance to tell an awful pun instead of slinging Shakespearean insults.

Cypher, Cypher, Cypher! There's the SRD which is adaptable for any settings, and then there are a handful of games made with Cypher that are tailored for specific settings (Numenera is sci-fi, for example). There's a neato GitHub out there that has set the SRD up like the book, and it's my best friend.

Instead of picking a race and class, you base your character on a statement: "My character is a [descriptor] [type] who [focus]". As in, "my character is a callous space marine who is haunted by their past". And then all those three things inform your starting setup, your roleplaying options, and your abilities when you tier up.

While character creation can be a little daunting -there are so many options! - the rules are amazingly simple, and my biggest hurdle from running Cypher as opposed to D&D has been getting used to it, not trying to understand it. Both me and my players are having trouble adjusting to the much faster pace that Cypher wants, with cyphers being something you should get and use frequently and expect to change very often. Also XP is a resource you can use not only to tier up, but to buy rerolls, avoid situations you deem too risky, or get your character an in with the local lord, or a luxury apartment. Which I think is really neat.

Disclaimer: I've only played a few sessions as of yet, and I'm unsure of where I think it falls on the player driven/GM driven spectrum. Cyphers are meant to be readily used, and while I think that may paralyze someone - bog standard "I can't use my health potions for the final boss in case a new, bigger final boss comes along" - Cypher anticipates this by simply limiting how many you can carry at a time, similar to how attunement works.

My online group is looking for a new game to play, make your pitch!

Ey friends, just like it says on the tin I'm in search of a system that plays well with an online playgroup. D&D has served us well but we'll be wrapping up a campaign in the not too distant future and I feel like shaking things up. Blades in the Dark was going to be my suggestion but I want to open the floor to you fine folks to offer up some suggestions.

Here's the specs of what I'd like:

Sessions take about 3 hours

On the rules lighter side of thing (nothing more complicated than d&d)

Not so player driven (the group can get a bit mired, does well when they have a strong direction)

Open to any particular genre or setting, though I'm not so great at running horror or mysteries.
