AITA if I tell my "husband" I love him?
Throw away because my siblings and friends are here. Don't roll your eyes, please. It's very complicated. So I (34M) have been married to my incredible husband Z (34M) for the last 8 years. We went to the same high school but actually ran into different circles. Z, who was a straightA student, didn't like me and my friend circle. Things worsened after I accidentally ruined his science fair project. High school ended with bad blood between us. His older brother, who was a few years senior to us, was my sister's classmate, and he tried to mediate between us, but Z really hated me and would get huffy every time we met.
We met again in Uni. Z seemed more open to the idea of a civil relationship, and things improved tremendously once I gifted him 2 rabbits for his birthday. Z had the cutest crush on our classmate M and would get so flustered when I asked him about M.
In our final year, all of us got very drunk in a party, and I lost the drinking game. As a punishment, I was tasked with safely escorting Z back to our dorm. Just my luck, for such a calm and self-controlled person, Z is an agent of chaos when drunk. We broke into the nearby aquarium to look at the sting-rays, went into a Mcdonald where Z proceeded to buy all the chicken wings as a gift for me and tried to fight a mirror for 'staring at the love of his life'. I somehow managed to calm him down and took him back to the dorm.
Fast forward a year, M suddenly announced her relationship with someone else. I was extremely surprised, but not only Z stoically bore the news, the rest of my friends were very chill about it too. In fact, they seemed more annoyed at me for making a fuss. My angel of a sister, who never spoke a harsh word in her life, told me I was lucky I was so stinking cute.
I tried my best to support Z in this difficult time. We spent most of our free time together. In fact, I invited Z to my sister's wedding to cheer him up. Incidentally, we kinda discovered a big conspiracy to harm Z's brother and his boyfriend, and Z's family was very taken with me. His mom started to joke that she'll steal me to be her own son. Even Z's very stern uncle seemed to soften up.
Finally, M announced her wedding when we were 26. I hastily planned a trip as a means to distract Z. We backpacked and hiked. One night, we got roaring drunk and woke up the next day in bed with each other. Our little radish is almost 9 this year. Z is not only a great dad, but he's an incredibly good husband, too. He's kind, warm, sweet, and patient. He's a wonderful cook. We are compatible in every way, and I mean every possible way. My parents love him. And I think I have fallen in love with him too. But would I be an asshole if I told him that I loved him? We have a good thing going on here. I don't want to rock the boat.

I know many of you are having a real "what happens now", post-election panic. There's a lot of fear-mongering happening right now too. I know when my anxiety spikes, action can often be a good deterrent, and so I'll offer you the actions I, and my friends, have taken.
Order copies of all your documents. Birth certificates, social security cards, passport (if you have one), marriage license, divorce papers, all the paperwork that tells others that you exist. I got three copies - one for me, one for my partner, and then our master copy.
Get a real ID at minimum, a North American travel card, or a passport. No, really. First of all, you have just ordered all the documents for a real ID, you may as well use them! In many states that upgrade to your license is under $10 for a duplicate, in some places it is free. The travel card is cheeper than the passport, gets you on a plane and through both northern and southern borders, and again, you have all the documents! The passport gives you more travel options. It is also a great document to have handy if you are applying for new jobs, may as well get one if your budget and circumstance allow.
Document your decision makers - in most cases, parents or a spouse makes financial and medical decisions if you can not. This is generally a given. But, if you have concerns about court decisions being overturned, it hurts nothing, and costs very little, to draw up the paperwork for a medical power of attorney. Document, by name, who you want making those decisions.
Get a will - now, this sounds extreme, but frankly, every adult should have one. If you have pets, children, shared property - you need a will! Even married people need a will, in the best of times. There are will-in-a-box lawyers everywhere, your workplace may offer legal insurance that includes a will, there are even online versions, though I would prefer you do that with an attorney to ensure the fullest force. Then, if your worst fears are realized, you still have that legal document to back up your desires.
Keep cash on hand - I have a friend who is better off than I am, financially. He is planning to keep both Mexican and Canadian currency in case he needs to hop the border. Some choose gold or silver, some go with jewelry. This is more radical - personally, I just like to have enough cash on hand for a nice dinner or a tank of gas. Not always financially possible, but a goal I work towards.
Ensure you have a 72-hour kit. FEMA recommends everyone have one for disaster anyway, floods, tornadoes, hurricane, or just a heavy winter storm. A minimum of 3 days of shelf-stable food, water, and clothing. If possible, increase that supply to a week. because in a disaster, that's how long you may need to be self sufficient. And if you need it for other reasons, it's there, you have it, and can rest a bit easier.
Someone I saw today suggested a garden, yes, even a winter garden. You can grow herbs and lettuce indoors, if necessary. In some southern climates, a cold frame may be all that's needed. But make plans for some summer plants. Even in an apartment, a pot full of tomatoes and peppers and perhaps even a zucchini can greatly increase your food options if prices skyrocket. (I mean more than they already have.) Be creative, check with your neighbors or even online (carefully) for some ideas to make it work!
If you have a lawyer, a financial advisor, or other professional, they can help you with what you need to protect the partner in your life. If not, start with the above list. It gives you something to work at to still your current anxiety, makes you a more fully functioning adult, and those steps are all recommended anyway - no wasted effort. Simply consolidating things you should already be doing.
Please friends, do not panic. I've been on this planet a few decades now, and I can tell you that my worst fears have never come true. Do take action to quell your own concerns - the above list may not be for you, but there are likely very reasonable things you can do to address your own concerns. In the end, things are likely going to work out. I saw a post today that reminded everyone that there were people who lived very decent lives as the Roman Empire was collapsing.

Life has been kind of crazy in the worst possible way this month.
It feels like so much more than 3 weeks since the day I filed for divorce on July 1, which was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.
I meant every word of my vows on that Thursday afternoon in September 2010 when my marriage began. I thought we were going to be each other's person for the rest of our lives, not for that to slip through my fingers because I was careless with his heart, and I can't put into words how deeply I regret it.
I never expected his embrace to hurt the way it does now, and the worst part of it is that he's the only one here to hug. He was the biggest source of my comfort for so many years, and even if he was here to hold me right now, it wouldn't be the same. What we had is completely gone.
It still kill me that I don't remember the last time we had sex, the last time we shared the bed we slept in together every night, and I woke up to him like I did so many times over the years.
He told me that we could have sex again on a friends with benefits basis, but I don't want to. It would destroy me.
Anyway, the power has been back on for a full week now after 8 days without in the godawful Texas summer heat, with only a few brief interruptions, mostly tonight when we had a thunderstorm.
We've spent the last week and a half, starting before the power even came back on, getting quotes from contractors for repairs for the extensive damages. The hurricane damages to the house I live in are in the tens of thousands of dollars.
(The house was downgraded from what was my home before my marriage ended because it feels like I'm surrounded by the devastating loss and ghosts of him and the love and life we shared for so long. It's agonizing just being here a lot of the time.)
We're not sure what the homeowners' insurance is going to cover for the repairs, which is terrifying, and we need to figure out how to work with FEMA if the insurance isn't helpful.
I'm also worried the HOA we're in will start giving us problems if we can't get the repairs done very quickly.
This month has been such shit in so many ways.
I desperately need my weekly counseling sessions, and my counselor cancelled this week. I've had only one of my weekly appointments this month due to cancellations and the hurricane, which is taking its toll on me.
In more positive and hopeful news, I had an appointment last Thursday with my job counselor at the state run employment program I was accepted into.
They'll pay fully for my schooling, textbooks, and supplies to get a degree or certificate from a local community college and offer job placement services after graduation.
I need a job I can do remotely, and I originally intended to pursue a year long certificate program in medical billing and coding. However, all of the local programs required on campus courses and capstones, which I cannot do.
I looked into every single fully online degree or certificate program that the local community colleges offered that aren't any longer than two years (my ex-husband agreed to let me stay here rent free for a few years while I get myself sorted) and settled on an Associate degree program in mobile/web application development.
I applied for the program today.
I wanted something with a decent level of job security, and I don't think phones are going anywhere. There's the possibility of freelance work on the side as well.
Considering and pursuing a career in technology is nothing new to me.
I went to a public university for an information technology program for 2 years after I graduated from high school, followed by a technical school for computer network operations for a year.
I never ended up working in the industry because it was saturated at my time of graduation, and they wanted me to have experience for an entry level position, which I found endlessly ironic.
I was told more than once by potential employers that I should have done an internship before I graduated to gain experience, which would have been fantastic to know while I was still in school and not with the days ticking down until I had to start repaying my student loans.
I desperately hope that I can transfer some of the roughly 20 year old credits over from the university I went to to cover the general education portion of the degree and maybe trim off a semester. (While technology absolutely has changed since the 2000s, some things haven't changed, like an introductory English or history course.)

How To Legally Transition in British Columbia, Canada
A while ago I said I would make a guide on this so here. Every other guide I found was either outdated for specific to another province so here is an updated one. Mainly writing this for my trans BC friends but anyone can use it. To those who aren’t from BC you can also use this as sort of what to expect if you choose to legally transition as it may be similar in other places. Important: You need to be 19 years old to change your legal name and gender marker in BC without parental permission. Things you will need: - Your original birth certificate. - Two pieces of government issued photo ID.  - If you’re from outside Canada, resident or citizenship cards. - If you’re married, marriage certificates. - Photocopy of your receipt for criminal record checks.  - A notaries person to also sign your application. Cost: Expect to pay at least $440, that’s how much I spent in total and includes the costs of updating IDs (including passport).  Step-By-Step: 1: Criminal Record Check The province of BC requires all applicants to get digitally fingerprinted during the process. This can be done at any RCMP station, no appointment necessary. If you don’t want to be around police then you can find an accredited agency in your area instead, however they may be more costly. Mine costed $55 and it was done by the police. If they ask you why just say you are trans and don’t elaborate further as your response will be recorded if done by police. Once that’s done, ask for a photocopy of your receipt, that’s what you need to send to the government.  You will need two pieces of government issued photo ID for this. I used my BCID and Passport as I don’t have a driver’s license. 
2: Name Change Application Once you have the receipt you need to send it within 30 days. You can find the applications on the BC Government’s website. If you’re over 19, not married, born in Canada and have no kids then you can apply online here: https://ecos.vs.gov.bc.ca/ Everyone else can apply here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/forms/vital-statistics/vsa529_fill.pdf  Once you’re done that, print all necessary documents but don’t send it yet. You need the gender marker change application still. This part should cost $137.  If you are under the age of 19 you will also need to write a hand-written letter about why you want to change your name. 
3: Declaration Witness Before you can mail your application for your name change you need someone who is qualified to do so to witness you signing your application. I had a lawyer for mine only because my mother is a lawyer. Anyone from a notaries public is qualified for this stage. You can find one here: https://snpbc.ca/ 
4: Gender Marker Change Application As of January 2022, you no longer need a diagnosis in BC to change your gender marker if you’re over the age of 12, so this process has been made so much simpler.  Application: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/health/forms/vital-statistics/vsa509a_fill.pdf  Cost can range depending on what you choose, mine was $54.
5: Mail Your Applications Now that you have everything you need, you must mail it to the Vital Statistics Agency in Victoria. The address will be on your documents.  Please remember to include your original birth certificate, photocopy of criminal record check receipt and the signed document given by your witness. If you’re not from Canada then a copy of your permanent resident or citizenship card. After this you now must wait. 
6: What To Do After After a while you will receive a letter stating your gender marker has been changed and you must surrender your now old birth certificate. Do not worry, it was already surrendered as it was needed for the name change too and should’ve been sent. You will also receive one from Ottawa about your criminal record check and they will send you a copy of whatever the RCMP or whoever did your fingerprints sent them. After about 10-15 weeks you will receive your Change of Name certificate and your new birth certificate, this is important as you’ll need it to update your IDs. With it will also be a list of everything that will need to be updated afterwards. I am updating my IDs first as everything else will require updated ID. 
It is a lot of work but it is so 100% worth it! I hated having to explain why my ID said I was female when the photo clearly had a man on it. I also hated having my full deadname be displayed on my Paypal when dealing with commissions. It’s so freeing not having that burden anymore. Criteria for determining what is important shit:
Was the document difficult to get? Birth certificates, death certificates, deeds, pink slips for cars, etc. Falls into this category. If you had to spend more than an hour getting the document and if you would have to make at least one phone call to replace it, it is an important document.
Was the paper difficult to generate? If you had to sit down and fuck around with a program and look at three other sheets of paper to make the document, keep a copy of the document you generated. This might be a tax return, this might be a college financial aid application, this might be an application for a home loan.
Does it have an account number on it? You do not need to keep EVERY piece of paper with an account number on it, but it is a good idea to keep at least one piece of paper with an account number for accounts that send you paper. You should have one copy of a bank statement or a credit card statement or a life insurance policy number or your retirement savings number. A good way to determine what you should have is by asking "how many steps would I need to take to get this number if I was talking to someone on the phone about it." Maybe I don't need to keep a bank statement because it would be very easy for me to get a copy of my account number, but it would be difficult for me to track down my life insurance policy number online so a copy goes in the folder.
Does the paper represent a legally binding agreement? This means is it a lease agreement, an insurance policy, a financing agreement? The whole document goes in the folder because you want a place where you can reference the agreement in case you need to file a claim or something like that.
Is the paper current? It is good for me to have a record of my dog's rabies vaccines, but I do not need to keep a copy of every vaccine she has ever had in her life; I can discard old copies. It is good for me to have a copy of the insurance for my current car. I do not need a copy of the insurance for a car I no longer own.
What would happen if someone asked for this document and I didn't have it? If a mechanic asked you for a copy of a receipt for a repair done at a different shop five years ago and you didn't have it, you would likely not have any problems. If you were asked to produce a copy of your birth certificate in order to get a marriage license and you didn't have the document, there would be problems.
Keeping paperwork is not a matter of sparking joy, it is a matter of covering ass. If you had to move to a new state on the other side of the country and establish yourself there for everything from getting an ID to requesting a pet license to applying for a loan or opening a bank account to proving your income history to a landlord, would you have the documents you needed to get it done? If you have those documents, they go in the folder.
Due to some stuff brought up in recent posts I believe it is time to once again extol the virtues of Ms-Demeanor's Patented Where Did I Put That Fucking Paper Organizational Binder.
Hello! I am a disorganized adult! This is the system by which I manage my important shit like pink slips for my car and medical records and tax information.
You're going to need:
A 3-Ring Binder
Transparent Sheet Protectors
Notebook dividers (optional but VERY useful)
A backpack (optional)
So the way this system works is you put the sheet protectors into the binder. You can either use the dividers to divide the binder into sections or you can label some of the sheet protectors to make different sections but what you are generally going to do is make sections of the binder labeled things like "taxes" or "vet" or "doctor" and put a few sheet protectors in each section.
Then all of your papers with important information get crammed in that folder. You don't organize them, you don't sort them by date, you don't alphabetize. You put things vaguely relating to taxes into the sheet protectors in the taxes section. You put things relating to cars in the cars section. You don't even attempt to make this readable - you're not using sheet protectors so that you can read each page and keep it legible, you're using sheet protectors because it's a cheap plastic bag that will sit nicely in a binder.
You CAN put stuff into the individual sheet protectors when you get it, but let's be realistic you probably WON'T do that, so just tuck individual papers into the front of the binder until you get to a critical mass of paperwork then take an hour to sit down and sort into categories and put it in the binder once every six months to three years (depending on how frequently you get paperwork). Sometimes these sections will outgrow their original allotted space - since my spouse had a transplant surgery the medical section has had to become its own folder - and that's okay. If you end up with multiple folders just keep them together (this is why the backpack is an option, and one I strongly recommend).
Because yeah, if my organization system relies on opening up a drawer and putting something where it belongs as soon as I get the paper, I will simply not be organized. It's not going to happen. But I can handle a messy stack of paper that sits in one place and grows until it is time to shove it into a binder. I can't organize things for thirty seconds a day every day but I can organize things for an hour once every year or so (maybe two hours every five years when I sort out stuff I don't need like copies of warranties for parts on a car I don't own anymore).
When my mom died she had about fifty pounds of paper files in her office that were neatly organized in a system that didn't make any sense to my dad, my sister, and I. I ended up sorting through those files for twenty hours, tossing out copies of paid invoices from ten years ago and student handbooks from my junior high school. I reduced one filing cabinet, two desk file drawers, and a foot-high stack to a six inch binder that I gave to my dad. My mom died five years ago; two months ago my dad asked me about a medical document and I was able to tell him to go look for it in the medical section of the binder. It was there, because ALL IMPORTANT SHIT GOES IN THE BINDER.
Where is my birth certificate? In the binder. Where is my tax return from 2017? In the binder. Where is the record of my dog's last rabies shot? In the binder. Where are the records for my life insurance? In the binder.
A lot of what people consider "being organized" breaks down to whether or not you can find the specific things that you're looking for. Does my binder look nice? Is it aesthetic? Does it have color-coded tabs and papers all laid out neatly? Absolutely fucking not. But if you ask me where to find a paper I know that I can do so within about five minutes of shuffling through the pile of letter-folded sheets that I pulled out of the appropriate section of the binder.
I've discussed the Where Did I Put that Fucking Paper Binder before, but now it is time to expand that concept to the Backpack of Important Shit.
You likely have Important Shit that does not fit in a binder. Some of my Important Shit that does not fit in a binder is stuff like jewelry and the spare key for my car. Other stuff - the reason I decided to bring this up at all - includes my backup hard drive and packaging (including product key codes) for pretty much all of the software that I own. This is also where I store printed out copies of the recovery codes for most of the online accounts that I have.
There's a lot of weird fiddly shit that we have to have that we might not access all that often. This is the kind of stuff that might end up in junk drawers or under sinks or in disused laptop bags or kicking around under a bunch of papers in a desk drawer.
It doesn't matter so much when that weird fiddly shit is a set of hex keys or a utility knife or a protractor or a copy of a student handbook but it DOES matter when it's something that you might need to put your hands on in a hurry. If your computer crashes, you're not going to want to track down the software in the back of a filing cabinet and the backup drive from somewhere in the bowels of your desk. If you lock your keys in your car you are not going to want to figure out if your spare is in a junk drawer or the old purse where you keep semi-important stuff or the tin on your desk that has buttons and pins and headphone covers. Just put it in the Backpack of Important Shit and when you need it you know where to look.
So anyway, if you are a person who is a minor disaster who has trouble finding important things when you need them please don't think that you have to get your life together and have a nice organized filing cabinet or clear plastic bins full of documents or a neatly divided storage closet where everything from board games to backup drives has its own neatly labeled place. Just assign ONE LOCATION for important shit and start putting the important shit there. It doesn't matter if you have a filing cabinet where you keep old copies of homework and printouts of online orders and family history records - you do not need to keep everything that is file-able in one place and depending on what level of catastrophe you are it might be detrimental to you if you try to do that. It doesn't matter if you have a jewelry box where you keep your collection of gauges and wrist cuffs; if you are going to stress out about where grandma's ring is when you're digging through your collection of cheap earrings and silver pendants then *do not keep grandma's ring or any other Important, Vital, Cannot Be Lost jewelry in with your day-to-day wear*.
I live someplace that has fires. My binder got upgraded to my Backpack of Important Shit when the fires were getting uncomfortably close to the house I was living in and I wanted to have one bag to grab if we had to get out fast. Once I did that, I never took the binder out of the backpack and the backpack has now made three moves with me and has meant that I've had my birth certificate handy when I needed it in the middle of a move between two states, I was able to provide a history of my cholesterol panel going back six years to a visiting nurse, and I was able to give the exact names and contact info of my spouse's previous surgeon to the hospital when I had unexpectedly moved to a new state with three bags and my work computer at the beginning of the pandemic.
Get yourself a backpack of important shit and a folder of where the fuck did i put that paper. It is so much easier to search a backpack for important shit than to go through an entire house and it is so much easier to flip through a binder than it is to dig through a filing cabinet.
