the number of Americans who think they can just move to somewhere else - my social media feeds everywhere (except tumblr, but I’ve seen it here too) is flooded with Americans asking whether they qualify as citizens bc their great great grandpa was from [insert European country] or which area in Scotland has best weather or which southern European country has cheapest rent or how to get a marriage visa to a Nordic country
my dudes. you can’t. there’s no “I’ll just move elsewhere” about this. Europe generally speaking is hostile to immigrants even from within Europe. unfortunately for you, you will have to stay and keep voting and keep working to make your country a better place. I’m sorry it’s hard. it is what it is.
#I say this AS a European#who has moved around a fair bit within Europe#the UK is not the great safe haven you think it is#do you even realise how hostile the UK is to immigrants?#no you can’t get a visa to the UK if you’re a broke disabled queer person with only an American citizenship.#the UK wants rich people only#no you can’t marry a random Danish person and get a residency permit#you have to prove a real connection. and not in the arranged marriage fanfic way. in the way where you have to provide tangible proof#in the form of text messages and emails and letters and cohabitation and time spent together#a paper trail of a relationship#you think the United States alone are hostile to immigration? my friend. Europe is worse.#do you want to know how many American-European couples I know who couldn’t get visas for their spouses in Europe and went to USA instead?#ALL OF THEM

Unabridged Birth Certificates: Comprehensive and Detailed Records
In its full form, an Unabridged birth certificate is a critical legal record sworn to give a comprehensive account of the birth of an individual. It contains the basic details which are hard for anyone to provide such as full names of both the parents, their nationalities, places of origin among others. It is also used in legal procedures, security personnel requests, and immigration services among other uses. Here, make sure you get a certified copy of the birth certificate and should contain all the details. By encompassing vast information, it plays an important role in identification and verification processes, and therefore it may become an optimal form of handling important and official life events. Secure yours today.

Simon marries a young foreign girl so he can get out of the barracks and she can get a citizenship
+1 point if she's Middle Eastern
…..he fell in love with her eventually
💍📄🛂🤍
Getting married had not been on your agenda for your trip to the UK, not at all. In fact, you'd never considered getting married at all. You'd been sent off on a work visit, with no intentions besides a quick in and out - do what you need to and get back home.
Simon Riley had, of course, been a thorn in the side of that plan. Not only had you somehow got on like a house on fire (a rare thing for anyone to do, according to Price), but you'd actually found yourself reluctant to leave. The two of you had managed to bond over a mutual hatred of your respective homes. You, despising the arid heat of the Middle East in comparison to the moody grey and green of England, and him, the concrete base on which he lived.
The marriage comment you'd let slip one night at the bar, a few too many drinks in after the others had left, was a complete accident - a joke and nothing more. What you hadn't been expecting was for Simon's attention to be piqued. For him to say that it might just work.
You'd be the recipient of spousal benefits, and he'd have an excuse to move off of his rudimentary base accommodation. That, and you were one of the few people he could actually tolerate, why should he faff about dating and making empty small talk when you're right there?
Of course, he'd maintain that well into the months after you'd walked down the 'aisle' of the courthouse, despite the fact that everyone could see the way he was growing utterly infatuated with his new wife, marriage of convenience and all.

Wonder if Sam will take his new legal American bride to Italy? He will be married, although unlike Caitriona's it will be a fake marriage, by 31 Dec. He needs the residency.
Dear Married Anon,
Three possibilities on this one: a) you watched 90 Days Fiancé for way too long and with no attention to details; b) you think I am an idiot, with no legal knowledge or experience; c) you are an idiot, with no legal knowledge or experience.
Your question comes with two strong biases, too: a) that you somehow are privy to such nonsense and b) the old & stale fake vs. organic marriage refrain, regarding C (that, by the way, proves that I did hit a nerve).
I am not very sure to whom exactly do you think you are talking, here. But if I do know one thing is that you, honey, are a Mighty Twat. If you wanted to be consistent with the crap the Gay Crowd spreads around, you could have gone for 'he needs a more solid/credible beard than that', instead of the completely inane 'he needs the residency'. What is he, Burmese? Oh, FFS. And by 'Burmese', I mean exactly this: are his life/personal safety in clear and present danger, in his home country, because of his ethnicity and/or political views? The answer is no, and he could still use his right of asylum. Does he need the US residency in order to secure a better paid job for himself? The answer is no: lots of other avenues can be explored and are routinely being used by thousands of foreign actors/performing artists, in order to legally work and reside in the US. I have even mentioned it before:
(Full October 2023 post, here: https://www.tumblr.com/sgiandubh/729979831079649280/mordor-says-he-returned-only-for-visa-reasons)
But let's suppose even a nanoshred of what you wrote could technically be correct. When you are an US citizen and you want to bring your significant other to live with you there, you basically are offered two options:
Scenario One: you want to bring your fiancé(e) to the US and get married there. You will need the K-1 visa, as anyone even remotely familiar with that reality show I mentioned knows. That doesn't exactly click with a hastily cobbled 'new American bride' he would marry until December 31 and this is why, according to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) own website:
[Source, LOL: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/guides/A2en.pdf]
'You have met each other in person within 2 years before you file this petition'. Who is it, then? The whore? She is French. The chatty influencer? She's 'so over him' (FFS, LOL). Alice 'he's mine and will never be yours'' Panikian? If you think so, you are aff yer heid on cheap gin. Hm? Ashley Hearn? Met her too late and you all know it. A secret lover? ROFLMAO. And psst: Raya girls are just for fun, they don't think homestead. Cross my heart, Anon.
Current and official USCIS average processing time for fiancé petitions at their (logically) California Service Center is:
But it could be as long as 26 months and a half, if he decides to settle for a Vermont beauty (LOOOOOOOL).
You should also know a couple of other things, Anon. First thing is he will not be able to enter the US under the type of visa he currently more than probably holds, in order to do so - that would be a heavily punished immigration fraud:
Mhm. Restrictions on his ability to future immigration benefits/permanent residence, fine and imprisonment. I hope I do not need to further develop, on this one.
Last thing you should have taken into consideration before writing this bullshit is that the fiancé visa would restrict his ability to go back to his own home country during all the waiting time. Why would an actor refuse work opportunities in the UK or in Europe for the sake of a fake marriage, as you called it yourself? Oh, if you only had a brain!
Need I say more about the grueling in-person cross-check interviews ? You should watch a wonderful movie starring Gerard Depardieu (a pig alright, but he is perfect, in there) and Andie MacDowell: it's even called Green Card, LOL. Few things changed since 1990, and if anything, the screw got only tighter. Not to mention the fact he will be unable to work in the US during the waiting process and she will have to prove she can sponsor/provide for him! ROFLMAO.
Scenario Two: you get married abroad and want to bring your spouse to the US, afterwards. You will need to file the Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative):
[Source: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/guides/A1en.pdf]
All this does, in reality, is put the spouse in line with thousands of other similar applicants. Residency will be granted only after extensive background checks and this is where I would like to stop for a while, Anon. You are with the Gay Crowd, right? Then how does this logically click with your long established talking point about his 'once very public gay life? Ah: he isn't gay? ROFLMAO. You see, being gay is a bit like being pregnant, Anon: you can't be 'just a little bit pregnant' and you certainly can't be 'just a little bit gay', either. Spare me the drivel 🙄. Kindly note those background checks are dead serious and could result in deportation - thought you should know, before you spew idiocies again.
Onwards with that residency thing:
If S were in Scotland/the UK when the 'legal fake bride' would file in the petition, he would not be allowed to come visit or work in the US: why would an actor be forced to turn down lucrative opportunities in Hollywood or elsewhere in the country, for the sake of bearding or circus only? And while S could technically apply for permanent resident status if he already were in the US at the time of the application for I-130, he would still not be able to work and therefore must be sponsored by the 'legal bride'. ROFLMAO, again.
I mean, this is so ridiculous I could cry. He would be invited to come to the US only after the petition is approved, which does not click with your suggested timeline and the seeming 'emergency situation' ('he NEEDS the residency', your ask shouts at the Entire Universe) . Why the haste? Just because you wanted to somehow shoehorn it in, somewhere before Inauguration Day? I have no words, but my paunch hurts with laughing right now.
Finally let's have a look at processing current times:
But it could go as long as...
I cannot stress enough that permanent residency will be granted only after the processing time is completed.
Why, oh, why would someone so inextricably complicate his entire existence in such an idiotic fashion, Anon? And finally, give me and yourself a break and read the damn political room, here, too. I will not elaborate, but I surely hope you do not live under a rock.
I rest my case, thank you, fuck off.

UK petition: Recognise nonbinary people's genders in law and in identity documents
It's that time again. There was no active UK parliament petition about nonbinary identities being recognised in law, so I made one.
The UK government has repeatedly acknowledged the existence of nonbinary people, but it has repeatedly refused to grant recognition in law and systems. Nonbinary genders should be recognised on: - Passports - GRCs - Marriage documents - Death certificates
[ Sign here ]
Deadline: 11 October 2024
Signatures: 54 of 100,000
See a graph: here
Who can sign:
Anyone living in the UK, regardless of citizenship
Anyone with UK citizenship, living anywhere in the world
No one else! Don't fake your postcode or whatever, it'll invalidate the petition

I've been waiting and hoping for an "explain it all" chapter in Letters From Watson's weekly breakdown of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Chapters XIII and XIV gave us a lot of excitement but not a lot I wanted to talk about.
Finally, in chapter XV, I am vindicated: Rodger Baskerville did not die without marriage or issue! To be fair, I had not even considered Costa Rica, best known for coffee-growing, as the destination of someone who wanted to get rich in mining. It turns out that Costa Rica had a gold rush as early as 1815 and continues to have significant gold, copper, and manganese mines.
Like most of its Latin American neighbors, Costa Rica had a tradition of recording marriages, births, and deaths at the parish level. Civil registration began in 1888, after Jack Stapleton/Rodger Jr. had already left the country.
Under the Naturalization Act of 1772, Rodger Jr. was automatically a British citizen, even though he was born in a country that had never been under British rule, because his father was a British citizen. The Naturalization Act of 1844 assured that Beryl, as a foreign woman marrying a British citizen, became a British citizen with her marriage. (source)
How Rodger Jr. was going to prove his claim, Holmes left unexplained. Also vague is how Stapleton got himself back to England with assorted identities. It turns out that standardized passports were not introduced until 1915, when World War I made border control a more serious issue. In the era of the story, a single-page letter would have been sufficient, though it had to be signed by the Foreign Secretary. (source) However, it's entirely possible that nobody ever asked to look at a passport for Rodger Jr.! Passports often weren't required at all, and a sudden increase of travel in the last quarter of the 19th century meant that there often wasn't much monitoring of whether travelers had one, or whether it looked valid.
Beryl Stapleton is left in a terrible situation -- though less terrible than if her husband were still alive, as her grounds for divorce were surprisingly scanty. She is legally a UK citizen, but she has no family in England. There is no social safety net. Her husband's money was tainted and is running low. It is unclear what, if any, skills she has to support herself, and her reputation is in tatters.
She would be better off going back to her family in Costa Rica -- even though she likely lost her citizenship upon marriage, a woman in 1889 didn't have enough rights for anyone to care, as long as her family received her. But would they? Marrying a scoundrel was usually blamed on the woman. (While Costa Rica had birthright citizenship for children born there of foreign parents, it required not claiming the parents' citizenship, as far as I can tell. A Costa Rican woman's citizenship followed her husband.) Her best bet would be remarrying, but the bloom is off that rose for Sir Henry Baskerville, and it's not like she particularly cared for him. If he did change his mind, he would be unable to take her into any polite society.
Laura Lyons is also left high and dry. Her biggest benefactor, Sir Charles Baskerville, is dead. Her father still won't see her. Stapleton's promises to fund her divorce were lies, so she's still tied to a husband she doesn't want.
Mrs. Barrymore is mourning the loss of her criminal brother, but she's in better shape than either of the higher-class women. Her husband does not, so far as we know, beat her. She and he can prevent Baskerville Hall from falling to ruin while Sir Henry is away recovering, then use their inheritance to start an inn or pub. Because she's not gentry, her brother's disgrace has little impact on her respectability. But people will come from miles around to eat her stew and hear the story of how the Barrymores served dinner to a murderer and to Mr. Sherlock Holmes.
Mrs. Mortimer is so far forgotten that James Mortimer is off on a long jaunt with his new bff, Sir Henry. She was a plot device to get him a fancy cane and relocate him to Devon, nothing more. Let us imagine her knitting contentedly in a cottage with a cat.
While I was correct in my vague recollection that The Hound of the Baskervilles involves a moor and a dog, I know nothing whatever about The Valley of Fear, which is apparently up next month.

That's good, at least assuming the current bunch "reforming" things doesn't manage to pull too much shit within the next year or so.
Especially after some of the things that came up in this thread, I was a tad concerned that I might also run into issues, since while I have indeed been living with a Swedish citizen for more than 3 years in Sweden already? (If somehow not quite 3 yet, according to La Migra's official count?) I have indeed not at all fulfilled the current "self-sufficiency" requirement for permanent residency, which is required for most people before they can get citizenship.
But yeah, this is indeed another case where EU family member status sure does come in handy. Since we were living in what was another EU country together for a lot of years before coming here, my disabled non-EU ass did squeak in under treaty rights, even though Mr. C is one of their own lifelong citizens with no other citizenship himself. That already made things much smoother than if I had been counted as married to a Swedish citizen for immigration purposes.
But yeah, my current EU family member residence card is also counted as equivalent to permanent residency status. It does basically morph into permanent residency after the initial 5 years, so they can't really bounce me out short of pulling a Swexit which significantly fewer people here even want.
And, for citizenship purposes? La Migra would have a hard time arguing that I have not ALSO been living with a Swedish citizen for at least 2 out of the 3 years that I've been living here. Dude wears multiple hats. If they did somehow manage to successfully argue that it doesn't count? Worst case, it's a couple more years to wait until I straight up qualify as an EU family member. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They may or may not also want additional proof that my qualifying "EU citizen" has indeed been working (like at all, regardless of income)--like they wanted documentation of his job contract to get my residence card. But, even if they do? That shouldn't be an issue. He's much better at maintaining paid employment.
So yeah, I'm good at worrying about this kind of thing. Riding out Brexit and noises about all these "EU sham marriages" to sneak us filthy non-EU heathens in to help destroy their country, really did not help matters when it comes to immigration-related stuff.
But, again, short of a Swexit that nobody but a certain far right fringe has even wanted to consider thus far? There is really not much choice but to give this filthy non-working non-EU heathen citizenship sooner or later. (And, unlike in the UK? I do kinda want it. For the added security, if nothing else. Both of us decided to pass on UK citizenship when we were eligible, for our own slightly different reasons.)
Thank goodness for EU treaty rights, is all I can say.

this is exactly why i said i dont wanna think about this u til december. nightmare scenario. a week ago i was just so excited to get to chill here, to get my visa petition filed, and now at age 18 im making plans for potentially having to get my 23yr old fiancè out of this country. which is hard, btw !! because I am not a uk citizen so I can't get them a marriage visa to the UK, poland doesn't recognize same sex marriage and my dual citizenship in isreal is useless at this point

With UK and Brexit and France, can they not see each other a lot? Is that why they only spend every so often together? I’m American so I have no idea how Brexit/European immigration stuff works //
They're limited in how long they can stay in each country because they don't have dual citizenship, a marriage license, or a permanent job. They can only visit for a certain amount of time
this is true but it doesn’t limit the frequency of short visits. And if he really wanted her to move in, we’re sure he could figure something out.

TIME FOR A BIGASS RANT
"isreal is lgbt+ friendly and palestinians want them dead!" ok L take. gay marriage isn't legal in isreal. also the IDF blackmails queer palestinians to work as spies and then kill them. not very gay friendly if you ask me.
also if isreal loves gay people so much why not give protection to gay palestinians? like bbg have you heard of rainbow migration? the answer is simple. isreal refuses to integrate with the arab natives (queer or not) and they're prepared to pull out every stick in their bag to wave it in front of news cameras to justify apartheid, ethnic cleansing, genocide et al.
Did we all collectively decide to forget about polands lgbt free spots? also how many anti trans bills were made by the US and UK? enough for you to talk about. but no. people in occupation that don't have running water, electricity, food, political immunity, citizenship and general protection are the problems queer people are oppressed. because they're "savages", "animals" and terrorists (all of these words were used by israeli officials/heads of state)
at the end of the day it's not about queer rights. it's about human rights. you hate "muslims" for having a strong take against queerness (and forget about the arab worlds colonial past that ratified it but that's a post for another day) while also ignoring actual gay muslims who are spiralling from an identity crisis because of conversations like this. day in and day out queer muslims have to question their very existence because of westerners.
i wanna end this by reminding everyone that systems of oppression are more insidious and strongly rooted in colonial societies. oppression takes many hats: cultural, political, economical, environmental, architectural etc etc.
tl;dr please pull out the dildos from your ear and listen to calls for liberation. whether it be the people of Hawaii, Ireland, most countries in Africa, the natives and black community in the USA and Canada. All eyes on Palestine.

I just reread your wonderful skating AU the other day so I have GOT to ask about the part 2/1.5 👀💙
<3 aaahhh that's so lovely to hear!! it's the one of my fics that i reread the most lmao so it's always nice to know other folks reread it sometimes too
so part 2 or maybe 1.5 is about what everyone is doing while gideon is in a coma, from cam's pov. since cam and pal clearly now need a new coach, and harrow would benefit from the support of friends, and gideon is hospitalized in the uk, cam and pal move there to train under abigail and magnus. also there is maybe a plotline with pal and dulcie about a marriage proposal and some citizenship shenanigans! i have a lot of notes on this story actually but i want to keep most of it under wraps, so here's a snip of what i've written trying to get into the headspace of cam as an ice dancer:
Her detractors might say—have said—that she lacks emotion. Doesn’t feel the music. A technician, juxtaposed with his artistry. It boils down to “you should smile more.” It boils down to “the Woman must skate the Woman’s Steps.” But they keep winning, so fuck all that. They’re right, though, that she doesn’t feel the music. She hears it. She understands the rhythm; can match it with her body like a metronome. She doesn’t need to feel it. All she needs to feel is him, feeling it. If it were up to her, they would compete in absolute pindrop silence, the whisper of their blades across the ice rising loud as a heartbeat. Perfect unison. Two parts of one body. The heart and the head. What no one seems to understand is that they are both the head; they are both the heart.

Hey Sassy,
Regarding the legality of the marriage in the US, that actually has to do with the other country’s rules about who can legally get married there. I remember when I was getting married I looked at doing it in Ireland, but Ireland required three weeks residency before you could apply for a marriage license there. In Mexico, I believe you have to apply for a marriage license through their immigration office and there are a few hoops to jump through before they can grant that. Im pretty sure France has very strict rules about it, otherwise they’d had tons of people coming in trying to get married in Paris. That’s why US residents usually have a legal civil ceremony in the US and then their “wedding” ceremony in other countries. A legal wedding in another country is recognized in the US regardless of the citizenship situation.
Thank you!
So I guess because the marriage is legal in the UK then the prenup has to be legal here in the US.
