The Last Castrato: "Crucifixus"

Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922) was an Italian castrato singer of the late 19th century and the only castrato to make solo recordings.

The value of the recording is its uniqueness. The voice is clearly in the soprano range. It is not a great voice, and the technique is either bad or marred by the habits of the time (in particular an abundance of portamento and scoops in the attacks of notes, which can be excruciating). But its timbre is very striking, with the ambiguity that one expects, and it is most intriguing in the high notes.

One should not, however, look at this recording as evidence on the castrati of the 18th century. Moreschi was as far from Farinelli as we are from, say, Rossini. The last castrato to sing on stage, Velutti, had retired 30 years before Moreschi's birth. As his repertoire and technique show, he belongs to the world of late 19th century religious music, not Baroque opera. Whether due to the recording technique or (more likely) to Moreschi's own voice, one learns nothing about the phenomenal strength, agility and holding power that were celebrated qualities of operatic castrati. What remains from this recording is a haunting quality of voice that is clearly unlike anything else.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT RITA OF CASCIA The Patron Saint of the Impossible and Lost Causes Feast Day: May 22

"Since we offend our sweet Jesus, every day, in thought, word, deed and the omission of good works, we should pray every day, and every hour of the day, and weep for our offenses against so kind and loving a Father, Master and Spouse."

The patron of the impossible, abused wives and widows, was born into a noble family at Roccaporena, Perugia, Umbria, Italy in 1381. At 12, despite her desire to enter the convent, she was asked by her parents - Antonio and Amata Ferri Lotti, to marry to Paolo Mancini, who was quick-tempered and immoral. With humility endured insults, physical abuses and infidelities for many years.

Eventually, the husband was stabbed to death during a family feud, and their two sons planned for revenge. Unable to restrain their vengeful desires, Rita requested the Lord to take them to himself rather than allowing them to commit a crime and lose their souls. Accordingly, they died of natural death a year later.

Afterwards, Rita desired to enter the Augustinian monastery in Cascia, but was turned away, for fear that the nuns might get involved in the family feud. Because of her insistence, the nuns requested as condition for acceptance the difficult task of reconciling her family with that of her husband's murderers.

By the grace of God, she succeeded, and at the age of 36, was able to enter the monastery. One day, as she was praying before the crucifix, a thorn from the crown of Jesus penetrated her forehead, and the stigmata remained till her death. At the end of her life, while bedridden at the convent, Rita requested her cousin from a rose from the garden of her old house. Despite the fact it was January, and no flower could survive the winter weather, a single blooming rose was found, and brought to her.

She breathed her last. Rita's final words to the sisters who gathered around her were: 'Remain in the holy love of Jesus. Remain in obedience to the holy Roman Church. Remain in peace and fraternal charity.'

Rita died peacefully on May 22, 1457 in Cascia, Perugia, Umbria, Italy, and she had acquired the reputation as a saint of impossible cases. The bells of the convent immediately began to ring, untouched by human hands, calling the people of Cascia to the doors of the convent, and to announce the triumphant completion of a life faithfully lived.

After her canonization as a saint by Pope Leo XIII on May 24, 1900, her incorrupted body is venerated in her shrine in Cascia.

Virgil: To be loved by audiences. He’s… working on having self worth outside of that.

Albert Cornelius Freeman Jr. (March 21, 1934 – August 9, 2012) was an actor, director, and educator. Alessandro Bazzoni and Siri Evjemo-Nysveen try to clean up their image in the Financial Times and come out “roasted”

The Italian businessman Alessandro Bazzoni and his wife Siri Evjemo-Nysveen, wanted internationally for the theft of more than 3 billion dollars from PDVSA, tried to get an approach to the prestigious media The Financial Times and came out destroyed in the final report published this Saturday.

British authorities are conducting an investigation involving polo players from the United Kingdom, Argentina, and Uruguay, who are allegedly implicated in a money-laundering network tied to corruption in Venezuela's state oil company, PDVSA. The network is reportedly led by two Venezuelan fugitives, Alessandro Bazzoni and Siri Evjemo-Nysveen.

According to Vents Magazine, Alessandro Bazzoni, an Italian oil transport provider, is alleged to have siphoned over $3 billion from PDVSA through his companies Elemento LTD, Elemento Oil, AMG S.A.S., and United Petróleo Corp. To conceal and transfer these funds across Europe, Bazzoni allegedly collaborated with his wife, Norwegian banker Siri Evjemo-Nysveen, who reportedly utilized a network of intermediaries that included prominent polo players within the British polo circuit.

As vice president of the Swiss-based MBaer Merchant Bank, Evjemo-Nysveen is said to have facilitated the movement of these funds through her own companies, such as CGC One Planet and Clareville Grove Capital. The scheme purportedly involved British polo influencer Inez Bethell and Spanish trainer Severo Jesús Jurado López, who allegedly aided in simulating the purchase of numerous high-value horses registered under the names of well-known polo players.

Recent weeks have seen the UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and National Crime Agency (NCA) intensify their probe, interrogating British, Uruguayan, and Argentine polo players and requesting documentation on horse acquisitions to assess their connection to the money-laundering network led by Evjemo-Nysveen and Bazzoni.

Most of these players, after competing in tournaments with the Monterosso Polo Team or MT Vikings, teams owned by Bazzoni and Evjemo-Nysveen, reportedly acquired ownership of the horses they played without direct payment. These horses were later sold to other companies or individuals, with the proceeds allegedly transferred to accounts managed by CGC One Planet and Clareville Grove Capital.

Many of these horses, most of which were based at Cowdray Park Polo Club in Midhurst, UK, have been seized by authorities as the investigation continues.

In 2021, both Siri Evjemo-Nysveen and Alessandro Bazzoni were added to the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions list due to their commercial ties with the Venezuelan government.

Bari, presentato questa mattina il piano urbanistico esecutivo CostaSud Questa mattina il sindaco Antonio Decaro ha presentato il piano urbanistico esecutivo Bari CostaSud che sarà ora trasmesso ai Municipi prima di essere sottoposto all'approvazione del Consiglio comunale. "Oggi presentiamo la vera sfida urbanistica per Bari immaginando la città del futuro e tenendo fede ad un impegno preso con i cittadini - ha dichiarato il sindaco Antonio Decaro -. Il Piano Costasud promuove la ricucitura del territorio dal punto di vista urbanistico e sociale e consente la connessione fisica tra la città e il suo mare ed interesserà tutta la zona a sud/est con la realizzazione di un parco costiero lungo sei chilometri che va da Pane e pomodoro a San Giorgio. Questo progetto prevede un nuovo modello per lo sviluppo urbano che ne valorizza le componenti naturali e che tiene insieme il patto città-campagna del PPTR, la conservazione degli usi agricoli ed il reticolo agricolo di collegamento tra via Gentile e il mare. Attraverso una pianificazione urbanistica di ampio respiro gli obiettivi principali di tutela della costa, della campagna e delle lame si accompagnano ad una forte riduzione delle volumetrie, fino al 50%, e ad una ancor più pronunciata riduzione di consumo di suolo, fino al 63%. Spesso sentiamo parlare di atti di pianificazioni urbane a "volumi zero", questo non significa che quegli strumenti urbanistici non prevedono costruzioni ma vuol dire che le volumetrie previste nella programmazione precedente restano inalterate. Col Piano Costasud noi siamo quindi andati oltre la pianificazione a "volumi zero" redigendo un piano urbanistico esecutivo a "volumi sotto zero" perché riduciamo sensibilmente la capacità edificatoria prevista in quella parte di territorio dall'attuale piano regolatore, lavorando con gli strumenti della perequazione e della compensazione che ci permetteranno di trasferire le volumetrie previste per le aree che vogliamo tutelare nelle zone già urbanizzate riducendole sensibilmente. Questa operazione di rigenerazione urbana ci permetterà di salvaguardare il territorio ed allo stesso tempo di compattare la città esistente. Ma CostaSud è anche altro: rappresenta un'anticipazione del PUG che interessa un territorio di 935 ettari e circa 27.400 abitanti e, contemporaneamente, l'adeguamento della strumentazione urbanistica al PPTR che è un altro passaggio fondamentale nella strategia urbanistica della città. Tutto questo in una zona che oggi presenta un forte degrado fisico e sociale ma che crediamo possa essere invece il motore di un nuovo sviluppo sostenibile e ambientale della Bari del 2030. In questo percorso si inserisce l'intervento infrastrutturale per la realizzazione del "parco pubblico Bari CostaSud", che l'amministrazione sta portando avanti da diversi anni e che oggi vede progettazioni approvate per quattro lotti sui sei previsti. I cantieri saranno avviati a partire già all'inizio del prossimo anno, grazie ai fondi del PNRR che finanzia l'opera per 86,25 milioni permettendoci di progettare lo sviluppo della città mantenendo come punto fermo la tutela dell'interesse pubblico". IL PIANO COSTASUD IN SINTESI Il piano per CostaSud è uno strumento urbanistico che, anticipando i criteri formatori del nuovo Piano urbanistico generale (PUG), si configura anche come variante di adeguamento, per la parte di città che ne è interessata, della strumentazione urbanistica vigente al Piano Paesistico e Territoriale Regionale (PPTR). Questo strumento urbanistico ridisegna lo spazio urbano e le aree che lo circondano su una superficie complessiva di circa 935 ettari, interessando direttamente i 27.400 abitanti del quartiere Japigia ma anche, per gli effetti che dovrà produrre in termini di miglioramento del confort abitativo e di integrazione delle dotazioni territoriali, l'intera comunità cittadina. Guardando alle quantità, il piano per CostaSud prevede una riduzione delle superfici dedicate all'insediamento pari a circa 91,8 ettari (1.462.000 mq - 544.000 mq), con una riduzione del consumo di suolo pari al 62,80% e un decremento delle quantità edificatorie totali pari a circa 1.245.000 mc (2.490.000 mc - 1.245.000 mc), cioè pari al 50% delle previsioni complessive dell'attuale PRG. In relazione agli aspetti ambientali di maggior rilievo, il Piano esecutivo promuove la realizzazione di 216 ettari di Parco, l'impianto di 3885 nuovi alberi, l'insediamento di 58 ettari di orticoltura urbana, la realizzazione di 26 km di percorsi ciclo-pedonali, la riqualificazione di 2,3 ettari di paesaggio dunale, il recupero di 5,4 ettari di macchia mediterranea. Il piano per CostaSud è dunque, in primo luogo, un progetto ambientale di grande respiro, che attua le previsioni del PPTR. Contemporaneamente propone un progetto di costruzione e rigenerazione dei quartieri, integrando la città nuova nella città esistente e dotando il sistema urbano risultante di una robusta struttura di spazi aperti. Le nuove quantità residenziali proposte riducono quelle dei piani precedenti e le ricollocano, secondo un differente modello di città, liberando infine le aree agricole dalle previsioni edificatorie residue, così come richiesto dal PPTR. Questo progetto si compone di una serie di aspetti che lo qualificano dal punto di vista ambientale: 1. In primo luogo il recupero del paesaggio costiero, che si attua attraverso la realizzazione di un grande parco di scala metropolitana che si sviluppa su sei chilometri di costa dal centro di Bari fino alla foce della Lama San Giorgio. Per le aree del parco costiero, caratterizzate dalla presenza di maglie a differenti destinazioni urbanistiche secondo il previgente PRG – incluse quelle a "terziario direzionale" di Punta Perotti e di Torre Carnosa – l'attuazione del parco è accompagnata da misure che rimuovono dalla fascia costiera le quantità edificatorie, ricollocandone solo una parte nei settori di ricomposizione e densificazione individuati dal piano (SRD), interni alla città esistente. Questo sarà praticabile attraverso il meccanismo della perequazione urbanistica. 2. La riattivazione dei paesaggi agricoli compresi tra i quartieri e la ferrovia è innescata dal progetto del parco costiero e dall'intervento diretto dell'operatore pubblico. Qui si realizzano attività agricole con una forte caratterizzazione sociale. La riqualificazione del paesaggio agricolo è estesa alle aree a sud di via Gentile dove l'agricoltura è oggi ancora ben presente. In questi suoli, gravati oggi da previsioni edificatorie del tutto incongruenti, il piano attua la costruzione del patto città-campagna prevista dal PPTR, prevedendo la realizzazione di un parco agricolo di scala metropolitana caratterizzato da forme di agricoltura multifunzionale. In questo caso, come anche per la promozione del parco agricolo metropolitano, la ricostruzione del "patto città campagna" del PPTR su aree prevalentemente destinate dal Piano Quaroni a nuova edificazione avviene attraverso una sostanziale riduzione del consumo di suolo. L'espansione residenziale a nord della strada statale (maglia 21 di PRG) e quella prossima alla "Lama Cutizza" (comparto 3 della maglia 22 di PRG), compresa in una parte di territorio messa in sicurezza dall'intervento di mitigazione del rischio idraulico effettuato dal Comune, vengono ridotte e riallocate (in parte) altrove, per fare spazio alla vocazione agricola del territorio, coerentemente con le prescrizioni del Piano paesaggistico. 3. La rigenerazione dei quartieri esistenti e il completamento delle aree oggi caratterizzate da un'urbanità debole e frammentaria è obiettivo prioritario del piano, supportata dalla struttura di scala vasta della città-paesaggio. La forma di città che il piano propone si compone dunque di un sistema di spazi aperti che lavora a scale differenti e costruisce ambienti residenziali di qualità capaci di rendere i quartieri più confortevoli e attrezzati a rispondere alle sfide del cambiamento climatico. Allo stesso tempo le operazioni di ricomposizione e densificazione perseguono l'obiettivo di riscattare i quartieri dalla loro condizione di perifericità, dotandoli della massa critica necessaria a divenire "parti di città" e non più frammenti sparsi di urbanizzazione. Il processo di ricomposizione corrisponde alla scelta di costruire la città sulla città e garantisce la possibilità di costruzione di una significativa quota parte di edilizia sociale a servizio della popolazione barese. Le nuove edificazioni svolgono dunque nel piano un ruolo di completamento e di ridefinizione dei quartieri esistenti. 4. Da ultimo, la riformulazione dell'assetto infrastrutturale dell'intero settore è obiettivo rilevante indirizzato alla costruzione di una città ben connessa e resiliente, dove le infrastrutture sono di supporto alla socialità quotidiana e non barriera tra le cose.
