The Last Castrato: "Crucifixus"

Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922) was an Italian castrato singer of the late 19th century and the only castrato to make solo recordings.

The value of the recording is its uniqueness. The voice is clearly in the soprano range. It is not a great voice, and the technique is either bad or marred by the habits of the time (in particular an abundance of portamento and scoops in the attacks of notes, which can be excruciating). But its timbre is very striking, with the ambiguity that one expects, and it is most intriguing in the high notes.

One should not, however, look at this recording as evidence on the castrati of the 18th century. Moreschi was as far from Farinelli as we are from, say, Rossini. The last castrato to sing on stage, Velutti, had retired 30 years before Moreschi's birth. As his repertoire and technique show, he belongs to the world of late 19th century religious music, not Baroque opera. Whether due to the recording technique or (more likely) to Moreschi's own voice, one learns nothing about the phenomenal strength, agility and holding power that were celebrated qualities of operatic castrati. What remains from this recording is a haunting quality of voice that is clearly unlike anything else.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT RITA OF CASCIA The Patron Saint of the Impossible and Lost Causes Feast Day: May 22

"Since we offend our sweet Jesus, every day, in thought, word, deed and the omission of good works, we should pray every day, and every hour of the day, and weep for our offenses against so kind and loving a Father, Master and Spouse."

The patron of the impossible, abused wives and widows, was born into a noble family at Roccaporena, Perugia, Umbria, Italy in 1381. At 12, despite her desire to enter the convent, she was asked by her parents - Antonio and Amata Ferri Lotti, to marry to Paolo Mancini, who was quick-tempered and immoral. With humility endured insults, physical abuses and infidelities for many years.

Eventually, the husband was stabbed to death during a family feud, and their two sons planned for revenge. Unable to restrain their vengeful desires, Rita requested the Lord to take them to himself rather than allowing them to commit a crime and lose their souls. Accordingly, they died of natural death a year later.

Afterwards, Rita desired to enter the Augustinian monastery in Cascia, but was turned away, for fear that the nuns might get involved in the family feud. Because of her insistence, the nuns requested as condition for acceptance the difficult task of reconciling her family with that of her husband's murderers.

By the grace of God, she succeeded, and at the age of 36, was able to enter the monastery. One day, as she was praying before the crucifix, a thorn from the crown of Jesus penetrated her forehead, and the stigmata remained till her death. At the end of her life, while bedridden at the convent, Rita requested her cousin from a rose from the garden of her old house. Despite the fact it was January, and no flower could survive the winter weather, a single blooming rose was found, and brought to her.

She breathed her last. Rita's final words to the sisters who gathered around her were: 'Remain in the holy love of Jesus. Remain in obedience to the holy Roman Church. Remain in peace and fraternal charity.'

Rita died peacefully on May 22, 1457 in Cascia, Perugia, Umbria, Italy, and she had acquired the reputation as a saint of impossible cases. The bells of the convent immediately began to ring, untouched by human hands, calling the people of Cascia to the doors of the convent, and to announce the triumphant completion of a life faithfully lived.

After her canonization as a saint by Pope Leo XIII on May 24, 1900, her incorrupted body is venerated in her shrine in Cascia.

Tara: Saratov, Russia. He lives FARR away from there now. He hates it there and honestly I would too if I was raised the way he was.

Amaya and Rina: Somewhere in Ohio. Amaya loves it, Rina hates it. Rina lives there, Amaya lives in Michigan.

Antonio: Somewhere in Idaho, iirc. Probably lives around there.

Virgil: Boston. Does not live there. Did not live there long enough to form an opinion on it.

Lori: Salem. She likes Salem, but being there is not a good thing.

Tārā: Tea. Specifically herbal tea. It makes its own blends sometimes.

Amaya: Flavored sparkling water, ginger ale, melon soda, stuff that’s not overbearing in flavor.

Virgil: Black tea.

Antonio: Water with flavor packets. An excessive amount, often times.

Chesa: Tea. Usually Tārā’s tea. When he makes it, he pours an extra cup for her.

Rina: During the summer she drinks a lot of water, but along with that and through the rest of the year, she likes coffee and peach Monster.

Cody: Apple juice. Can’t explain it.

Tārā: A comfortable life where he has the space to pursue spiritual endeavors and go to therapy.

Amaya: To protect those she loves. In terms of career, she’d like to work in a library or history museum, somewhere where her lifelong passion of preserving history can be put to use. It’s the most important thing to her.

Virgil: To be loved by audiences. He’s… working on having self worth outside of that.

Rina: To surpass the people she’s compared to and told to fill the shoes of. She wants to be a singer.

Lori: She doesn’t know. I’d say to tell stories that she feels people need to hear.

Cody: He just needs any amount of stability before he can start thinking about that.

Bonus: what is the OC’s most controversial but mundane opinion?

Tārā: Most holistic medicine only works in tandem with modern medicine.

Amaya: Eroguro is a valuable and important type of art and shouldn’t be brushed off just because of the content matter without a deeper look at the intention behind it. (<- autistic)

Virgil: Being human is overrated.

Antonio: You can’t make up for the things you’ve done in the past. You can only move forward.

Rina: Sex is stupid and that’s why she uses whore as an insult- it insinuates you’re someone who shapes your whole life around something completely trivial and also is an embarrassing thing to be called.

Lottie: The Exorcist is a horrifying movie for a bunch of reasons no one but her sees.

Eugene Antonio Marino, SSJ

Eugene Antonio Marino, SSJ became the first African American Archbishop in history-Fordham Graduate.

(1934 – 2000)

He was also the first African American auxiliary bishop in Washington, D.C., and the first to be secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, to Jesús María Marino, a Puerto Rican baker and Lottie Irene Bradford Marino, an African American maid. He completed a master's degree in religious education at Fordham University in The Bronx. He was ordained a priest in 1962.

During his time as archbishop of Atlanta, he helped address the conduct of other priests, until his own relationship with a lay minister became public knowledge. He soon resigned, later working as a chaplain and counselor until his death in 2000.*
