Miranda Richardson as Madame Giry
The Phantom of the Opera - 2004
I re found one of my favorite fanfics which I have been re-reading (unfortunately the fic seems to be unfinished. But that's okay because it's really wait enjoyable.) Anyway I loved it then and continue to love it. Thought I'd share it here since it's basically a prequel for my head canon for Phantom (Madame Giry/Erik (Phantom)) if anyone randomly feels like reading it.

I read a lot of historical (young adult) fiction growing up & if there's one trend I noticed it's that theres always at least one servant or lower class side character who never existed but has some kind of a relationship with the real historical main character & is in very near proximity to them in the book that I later was very disappointed to learn was 100% fictional

@symphonyofmalice sent a confession.
❝  i yearn for the darkness and silence of the underworld, where i can rest.  ❞
------------------------------
Erik could not comprehend the effect of years of existence stretching before him. He had suffered enough in the nearly 40 years he had existed on earth, he would not want to wish for centuries of the torment. It was understandable that Nicolas would feel the way that he did. Erik exhaled sharply through his nose, his shoulders slumping as his fingers rested against the keys of the organ. He took a moment before he swivelled round to face the vampire in a singular, fluid motion.
"You would deprive the world of your singularly unique genius if you took that option friend." The word 'friend' felt odd for him to say and almost just as odd to hear, even in his remarkably soft, quiet voice. He didn't have friends, not really, but Nicolas had somewhat changed that. Prior to Nicolas, the closest person to a friend to him had been Antoinette but even then, there was a considerable amount of distance between them both professionally and personally. It was what he had grown accustomed to and what he accepted as a given. It was his lot in life to be removed from the rest of society. He had tried it the other way and it had worked out terribly, except in this instance.

ANOTHER AU!? I know what you're saying... Gwen, you're nuts. But not only are you absolutely right, I think this one might be my most ambitious one yet. As a young nerd, there were two groups. The Marvel fans and the DC fans. And while the rivalry certainly has calmed down a bit, I was almost always torn. So, earlier in the week, I decided to do the one thing that every fanfic writer has tried at least once.
A Marvel/DC crossover.
But unlike the typical realm merger, to put it in Mortal Kombat terms, this is a universe where both properties coexist. For example, picture a group of people walking to a Big Belly Burger while listening to Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. That's just a fraction. I have an ENTIRE starting cast as well.
Welcome... to Earth-812
JUSTICE LEAGUE
Bruce Wayne/Batman (Alex Organ/Edward Bosco)

4.Post a screenshot of one of your favorite comments 8. Share the last line that you wrote 19. What headcanon do you always include in your stories? 33.Which of your fic titles is your favorite?
4. (I'm still friends with the person who wrote this comment, and the mention that they really liked the descriptions of the settings meant a lot to me -- I've tried to keep it in mind while writing descriptions since then.)
Tumblr media
8. And as he watched the bonfire burn, the flames seeming to dance along with Christine, Raoul, and the other revelers, he thought that, just maybe, it tasted a little like hope.
19. This is a tough one to answer, since I haven't written a lot of fics in one specific fandom where a headcanon could show up multiple times. But I really love the idea that features in Katabasis that other species can understand the urSkeks' telepathy with no problem (since they're directly projecting their thoughts), but the urSkeks can't understand the languages of other species unless they make the effort to learn them, so I'll pick that one -- if I ever write more Dark Crystal stories where the urSkeks feature, it will definitely come up again.
33. Trio Sonata, definitely :) it describes the relationships between the characters (both the main Raoul/Christine/Erik threesome, and the new family bond that's forming between Nadir/Antoinette and Meg), and it's also a reference to a type of music composition (two melody instruments, such as violins or flutes, combined with basso continuo).

Audrey/Seymour, Hyde/Lucy, Hyde/Emma
Ship It: Audrey/Seymour
What made you ship it?
...I will admit I have never actually watched this musical in full, but "Suddenly Seymour." Especially when performed live by Hugh Panaro. Rawr.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
Get you a man who will feed your abusive boyfriend to a plant which he named out of love for you.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
...I literally have no idea what the unpopular and popular opinions on this ship are and I choose to keep it that way. I think that, looking at the tag at just a glance, it's actually that rare case with one of my ships where the fandom just...hyper-sanitizes it? Like, I love them as a comfort ship where they help one another and support one another, but I also do very much like that....he does feed people to the plant? He couldn't kill Orin, but he did watch as he died. He did get rid of Mushnik. And, while we can go back and forth on whether they deserved it...that is a thing he does do, and he was willing to let more people die if it meant that Audrey would still love him. I'm not looking at hyper grimdark takes, but I'm interested in like....approaches that go with that level of..."The things we do for love."
Ship It: Lucy/Hyde
What made you ship it?
It was very much....not necessarily Baby's First Darkship, because I've been shipping heroes/villains since I literally had a conception of romance as something Not Icky. I loved my femme fatales and ice queens and brooding bad boys and gothic heroes -- I always have and, unless something very dramatic happens, I very likely always will. (One of my first ships probably WAS Imhotep/Ankh-Su-Namun.) But if it wasn't Baby's First Dark Ship, it was Baby's First Musical Theatre Dark Ship. Like, I'd dipped into E/C, but I was kind of caught up in the sort of....purity culture around it? So I gave it up for a while. And J and H was the second musical, after POTO and Cats, that I REALLY got into, so it was kind of natural. (And HILARIOUS, given that Hyde is....pretty objectively a worse human being than Erik in every conceivable way -- He's definitely worse as a romantic partner. I really went from the frying pan to the flaming dumpster fire and never looked back.)
But, like. At the time, I was a very, very religious pre-teen/teenager, who was very strongly indoctrinated by purity culture. Like, to put this into perspective: I only allowed myself to listen to "Point of No Return" from POTO once a day because I thought it was a Bad Song (that I was nonetheless intrigued by) and somehow, only listening to it once a day, with the knowledge that it was a Bad Song, would somehow make it okay with Baby Jesus. (Yes...my twelve year old self was...a little strange in the logic department.) And so Dangerous Game was really.....it was sex, in a way that I really didn't allow myself to interact with sex. And it was a little scary and...intimidating and guilt-ridden, but I was also very interested in this push and pull. Lucy was this female character that I was really invested in, she had this very tragic ending that I rejected even at 12, and so I was really drawn to her and her dynamic with Hyde -- some of the first musical theatre fanfic I ever looked at was probably for those two and Chauvelin/Marguerite.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
I love (anti)heroine/villain ships where the heroine/villain are in a relationship that works as a dark parallel to another "purer" ship. It's similar with Morléans Marie Antoinette where it's like....Lucy isn't Emma, Hyde isn't Henry, and they're both these kind of cast-offs of society. Hyde is the part of Henry that he rejects, while Simon Stride/the Spider makes it very clear that Lucy will never be a lady like Emma, and so there's this...symmetry between the two of them.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I don't really go here as an active fandom -- I don't really know what the fandom opinions are on them. Like, so much discussion of J and H is about how bad it is and...like, it is and it isn't and I need to be at a certain level of trust with someone before I'm willing to talk about what I do and don't like about it, and every time I go on I see all these webcomics and crossovers I don't fully understand and don't particularly *want* to understand, so like...I'm here, but I'm not.
I guess...in my ideal J and H, it would really emphasize that Hyde himself has some of Henry just like Henry has some of Hyde -- Some of those things that Hyde does that Henry wouldn't do are horrible, but I also wouldn't mind seeing him, say, beat the shit out of the Spider. (Though he does kill Simon at the wedding reception so #GaslightGatekeepGirlboss?) Like, he's canonically possessive of her, so I'd like to see that possessiveness cross over into protectiveness. I'd like to see more of that push and pull, establishing this sense of...a certain level of equality even if he still has more power over her. It's still inherently unhealthy, because it wouldn't be *them* if it wasn't, but just...fleshing out what's already there. And, in my ideal version of things, she does survive him stabbing her (I HAVE NOT ACCEPTED HER DEATH SINCE 2010, I'M NOT GOING TO START NOW), and so she has to come to terms with everything post-canon. Like, the man's dead, and that's good, but also that she *did* love him, so there's also this sense of regret.
I can see, going into the tag, that there's been a bit of backlash against the ship -- Frankly, I don't care. I get why it can be offputting to people, I'm not blaming people for wanting Lucy to live a perfectly happy, fluffy life and to run away with Jekyll or Emma or any combination, but also it's kind of...there. It's one of those ships where I'm here like "don't blame me for being invested in the dark, toxic, but sexy relationship that is framed as being dark, toxic, but sexy." (Honestly, there wouldn't be anything morally wrong with shipping it either way, but in this particular case...it's in the canon. And, frankly, again, what do people expect from a gothic musical? Well-adjusted people?) I'll say that most takes seem to, as usually when it comes to my dark ships, go either too fluffy for them or too grimdark, when my personal favorite medium is "fucked up tenderness/angst/bittersweet endings."
Ship It: Emma/Hyde
What made you ship it?
I literally never considered it until you just suggested it, but I am now interested.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
I was talking about Lucy/Edward as that sort of gothic ship that is based on obsession and lust that borders just on the razor edge of hatred and love, but also...Emma/Edward are the gothic ship that is...the heroine in the haunted house (her house), married to a monster. It's a mixture of Beauty and the Beast, the gothic genre, and some of my favorite folkloric motifs around monstrous husbands. (I'm thinking of a mix up of Bluebeard, The Vampire/Corpse Eater [though that one and I have a...complicated relationship], and East of the Sun, West of the Moon.) He's Henry, but he Isn't, there are these traces of the man that Emma loved, and she wants him back, but there is also this darkness that is also compelling. Emma's never fit into Victorian society, anyway -- She isn't "seventeen, obedient, and sweet". That was part of the appeal of Henry, why she didn't marry Simon. She wouldn't go for Hyde's brutality, no, but I also think...she might, depending on the Emma, be willing to consider Hyde more than we might think. She's coming in with this strong sense of self and this strong sense of confidence that might or might not be enticing to Hyde.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
...if this is widely shipped in any way, I would be greatly surprised, especially given how vocal people can be about Lucy/Hyde.

EXCLUSIVE: Erik Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) has joined the cast of Godfather of Harlem for Season 4, currently in production in New York.
Created by Chris Brancato and the late Paul Eckstein, Godfather of Harlem tells a story inspired by infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Forrest Whitaker), who in the early 1960s returned from 11 years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles.
In Season 4, Bumpy continues his bloody war for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families, while contending with the emergence of a potential rival in newly arrived Black gangster Frank Lucas. After Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death, Bumpy must also grapple with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers.
In a recurring role, Palladino will portray “Pino Greco,” a fearsome hitman and high-ranking underboss of the Genovese crime family. Greco is a prolific and ruthless killer who throughout the season descends into a deadly power struggle with Chin Gigante’s daughter Stella for control of the Family’s fortunes.
Ilfenesh Hadera, Lucy Fry, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy and Erik LaRay Harvey are among the cast returning for Season 4. The first three seasons are available to stream on MGM+.
Produced by ABC Signature, the series is executive produced by Brancato, Paul Eckstein, Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi, James Acheson, Markuann Smith and Ray Quinlan. Michael Panes and Stephen Schiff are writing executive producers on Godfather of Harlem, and Swizz Beatz serves as executive music producer.
Palladino can next be seen in the upcoming independent film Skincare starring Elizabeth Banks. He is represented by Greene Talent and The Coronel Group.

Erik: Considering the history of the french revolution and Marie Antoinette, I feel the whole singing severed head was of poor taste. Looked cool, but terribly poor taste.
Lestat: But all that blood!
Erik: It was red lights, red smoke and red paper.
Lestat: Blood!!!!

Erik
Alias: The Opera Ghost, O.G, The Phantom of the Opera, Angel of Music, Master, The Red Death
Biography:
Erik wasn't horrendously deformed when he was born but enough that his family were very much ashamed of him. It was obvious, something that could not be easily concealed, with his nose squashed in entirely on the left side and an upward tick to the corner of his lips on the same side that revealed more of his teeth and made him look like he was always snarling. He conceived to run away when he was young after a particularly brutal beating from his father who believed he should have been drowned at birth and brought them great shame through every moment that he lived. To spare his mother pain, when a travelling circus came through their town, he took his opportunity and joined them and was gladly accepted. However, he was very much ill treated there too and after a few years of dealing with that and the mockery, horror and scorn of others, he tired of it all. When they were in Paris, Antoinette Giry visited with some of the other girls from the ballet and he once again saw his opportunity. He attacked the ringmaster, strangled him to death but not before he was smashed on the head with a lantern. The wax and the flame burned the left side of his face and head and he felt even more of a monster than he had been before. Antoinette bore witness to it and she took hold of him by the hand and they ran, nobody really noticing them as the flames began to spread from where the lantern had been dropped. She took him beneath the Opera House and it was there that he remained for several years, putting into effect what he had learned in the circus regarding tricks and illusions and soaking in the beauty of music that remained ever his solace. It transpired that he was gifted musically and that he had a very sharp intellect.
When he reached his early twenties, he left the Opera House that had concealed him and attempted to travel whereby he ended up employed by the Shah who valued his knowledge and bid him to create the palace of Mazenderan. It was a huge achievement and Erik's designs were implimented perfectly. The Shah coveted him and his knowledge and skill and when Erik attempted to leave, the Shah instructed that he was to be blinded so he could not create as he had for anyone else ever again. Erik was slight, not of a particularly large build and that made him fast which proved to be invaluable.
He had caught wind of what was to happen and why and he caught the man off guard when he came to blind him. Erik emerged like a phantom from the shadows, blinded the man himself and then cut out his tongue so he could not speak properly again, could not utter the name of who had done this to him. He left immediately after and returned to the only place he had ever known any form of comfort; the Palais Garnier, whereby he resumed his prior residence, using the money he had earned from the Shah to furnish it in a manner appropriate to what he wished for. He created drawings and plans to improve the Palais that had fallen into a slight state of disrepair. His plans were submitted from The Opera Ghost and brought to the owner by the then Madame Giry. He had included a sum of money to assist with the renovations required and it was at this point that he began to make his demands. He would fund through Madame Giry the vast majority of the work on the basis that box 5 be reserved for him and his use and that he draw a salary. The agreement was made, the owner having only briefly caught glimpse of the Opera Ghost, thus knowing him to be a real being and not a superstitious story.
It was at this point that Christine came into his life, her singing captivating him, the pain and beauty mingling in her voice and he decided that he would be her tutor, that together they could create pure beauty from the ugliness and cruelty of the world through her with him once again playing the part of architect.
