crowdstrike: hot take 1
It's too early in the news cycle to say anything truly smart, but to sum things up, what I know so far:
there was no "hack" or cyberattack or data breach*
a private IT security company called CrowdStrike released a faulty update which practically disabled all its desktop (?) Windows workstations (laptops too, but maybe not servers? not sure)
the cause has been found and a fix is on the way
as it stands now, the fix will have to be manually applied (in person) to each affected workstation (this could mean in practice maybe 5, maybe 30 minutes of work for each affected computer - the number is also unknown, but it very well could be tens (or hundreds) of thousands of computers across thousands of large, multinational enterprises.
(The fix can be applied manually if you have a-bit-more-than-basic knowledge of computers)
Things that are currently safe to assume:
this wasn't a fault of any single individual, but of a process (workflow on the side of CrowdStrike) that didn't detect the fault ahead of time
[most likely] it's not that someone was incompetent or stupid - but we don't have the root cause analysis available yet
deploying bugfixes on Fridays is a bad idea
*The obligatory warning part:
Just because this wasn't a cyberattack, doesn't mean there won't be related security breaches of all kinds in all industries. The chaos, panic, uncertainty, and very soon also exhaustion of people dealing with the fallout of the issue will create a perfect storm for actually malicious actors that will try to exploit any possible vulnerability in companies' vulnerable state.
The analysis / speculation part:
globalization bad lol
OK, more seriously: I have not even heard about CrowdStrike until today, and I'm not a security engineer. I'm a developer with mild to moderate (outsider) understanding of vulnerabilities.
OK some background / basics first
It's very common for companies of any size to have more to protect their digital assets than just an antivirus and a firewall. Large companies (Delta Airlines) can afford to pay other large companies to provide security solutions for them (CrowdStrike). These days, to avoid bad software of any kind - malware - you need a complex suite of software that protects you from all sides:
desktop/laptop: antivirus, firewall, secure DNS, avoiding insecure WiFi, browser exploits, system patches, email scanner, phishing on web, phishing via email, physical access, USB thumb drive, motherboard/BIOS/UEFI vulnerabilities or built-in exploits made by the manufacturers of the Chinese government,
person/phone: phishing via SMS, phishing via calls, iOS/Android OS vulnerabilities, mobile app vulnerabilities, mobile apps that masquerade as useful while harvesting your data, vulnerabilities in things like WhatsApp where a glitched JPG pictures sent to you can expose your data, ...
servers: mostly same as above except they servers have to often deal with millions of requests per day, most of them valid, and at least some of the servers need to be connected to the internet 24/7
CDN and cloud services: fundamentally, an average big company today relies on dozens or hundreds of other big internet companies (AWS / Azure / GCP / Apple / Google) which in turn rely on hundreds of other companies to outsource a lot of tasks (like harvesting your data and sending you marketing emails)
infrastructure - routers... modems... your Alexa is spying on you... i'm tired... etc.
Anyway if you drifted to sleep in the previous paragraph I don't blame you. I'm genuinely just scratching the surface. Cybersecurity is insanely important today, and it's insanely complex too.
The reason why the incident blue-screened the machines is that to avoid malware, a lot of the anti-malware has to run in a more "privileged" mode, meaning they exist very close to the "heart" of Windows (or any other OS - the heart is called kernel). However, on this level, a bug can crash the system a lot more easily. And it did.
OK OK the actual hot lukewarm take finally
I didn't expect to get hit by y2k bug in the middle of 2024, but here we are.
As bad as it was, this only affected a small portion of all computers - in the ballpark of ~0.001% or even 0.0001% - but already caused disruptions to flights and hospitals in a big chunk of the world.
maybe-FAQ:
"Oh but this would be avoided if they weren't using the Crowdwhatever software" - true. However, this kind of mistake is not exclusive to them.
"Haha windows sucks, Linux 4eva" - I mean. Yeah? But no. Conceptually there is nothing that would prevent this from happening on Linux, if only there was anyone actually using it (on desktop).
"But really, Windows should have a better protection" - yes? no? This is a very difficult, technical question, because for kernel drivers the whole point is that 1. you trust them, and 2. they need the super-powerful-unrestrained access to work as intended, and 3. you _need_ them to be blazing fast, so babysitting them from the Windows perspective is counterproductive. It's a technical issue with no easy answers on this level.
"But there was some issue with Microsoft stuff too." - yes, but it's unknown if they are related, and at this point I have not seen any solid info about it.
The point is, in a deeply interconnected world, it's sort of a miracle that this isn't happening more often, and on a wider scale. Both bugfixes and new bugs are deployed every minute to some software somewhere in the world, because we're all in a rush to make money and pay rent and meet deadlines.
Increased monoculture in IT is bad for everyone. Whichever OS, whichever brand, whichever security solution provider - the more popular they are, the better visible their mistakes will be.
As much as it would be fun to make jokes like "CrowdStroke", I'm not even particularly mad at the company (at this point - that might change when I hear about their QA process). And no, I'm not even mad at Windows, as explained in the pseudo-FAQ.
The ultimate hot take? If at all possible, don't rely on anything related to computers. Technical problems are caused by technical solutions.
#crowdstrike#cybersecurity#anyway i'm microdosing today so it's probably too boring to read#but hopefully it at least mostly made sense#to be honest I wanted to have more of a hot take#but the truth is mundane

And that's *another* crypto conference I've been kicked out of. C'mon, it's a great analogy!
Voting Machines [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
[Caption above panels:] Premier Election Solutions (formerly Diebold) has blamed Ohio voting machine errors on problems with the machines' McAfee antivirus software.
[Cueball is sitting at a computer, facepalming.] Cueball: Wait. "Antivirus software"? On voting machines? You're doing it wrong.
[Cueball's friend enters the frame and speaks to Cueball.] Friend: Why? Security is good, right? Cueball: Of course. But, well—
Cueball: Imagine you're at a parent-teacher conference, and the teacher reassures you that he always wears a condom while teaching.
Friend: Ah. Strictly speaking, it's better than the alternative— Cueball: —Yet someone is clearly doing their job horribly wrong.

Cyberspace Sentinels: Tracing the Evolution and Eccentricities of ICE
As we hark back to the embryonic stages of cyber defense in the late 1990s, we find ourselves in a digital petri dish where the first firewalls and antivirus programs are mere amoebas against a sea of threats. The digital defenses of yore, much like the drawbridges and moats of medieval castles, have transformed into a labyrinth of algorithms and machine learning guards in today's complex cybersecurity ecosystem. The sophistication of these systems isn't just technical; it's theatrical.
The drama unfolds spectacularly in the cyberpunk genre, where Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics (ICE) are the dramatis personae. Let's peruse the virtual halls of cyberpunk media to encounter the most deadly, and delightfully weird, iterations of ICE, juxtaposing these fictional behemoths against their real-world counterparts.
We commence our odyssey with William Gibson’s "Neuromancer," where ICE is not only a barrier but a perilous landscape that can zap a hacker's consciousness into oblivion. Gibson gives us Black ICE, a lethal barrier to data larceny that kills the intruding hacker, a grim forerunner to what cybersecurity could become in an age where the stakes are life itself.
CD Projekt Red’s "Cyberpunk 2077" gives us Daemons, digital Cerberuses that gnash and claw at Netrunners with malevolent intent. They symbolize a cyber-Orwellian universe where every keystroke could be a pact with a digital devil.
The chromatic haze of "Ghost in the Shell" offers ICE that intertwines with human cognition, reflecting a reality where software not only defends data but the very sanctity of the human mind.
In Neal Stephenson’s "Snow Crash," the Metaverse is patrolled by ICE that manifests as avatars capable of digital murder. Stephenson's vision is a reminder that in the realm of bytes and bits, the avatar can be as powerful as the sword.
"Matrix" trilogy, portrays ICE as Sentinels — merciless machines tasked with hunting down and eliminating threats, a silicon-carbon ballet of predator and prey.
On the small screen, "Mr. Robot" presents a more realistic tableau — a world where cybersecurity forms the battleground for societal control, with defense systems mirroring modern malware detection and intrusion prevention technologies.
"Ready Player One," both the novel and Spielberg's visual feast, portrays IOI’s Oology Division as a form of corporate ICE, relentless in its pursuit of control over the Oasis, guarding against external threats with a militaristic zeal that mirrors today's corporate cybersecurity brigades.
And let’s not overlook the anarchic "Watch Dogs" game series, where ICE stands as a silent sentinel against a protagonist who uses the city’s own connected infrastructure to bypass and dismantle such defenses.
Now, let us tether these fictional marvels to our reality. Today’s cybersecurity does not slumber; it's embodied in the form of next-gen firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and advanced endpoint security solutions. They may not be as visceral as the ICE of cyberpunk, but they are no less sophisticated. Consider the deep packet inspection and AI-based behavioral analytics that cast an invisible, ever-watchful eye over our digital comings and goings.
Nevertheless, the reality is less bloodthirsty. Real-world cyber defense systems, as advanced as they may be, do not threaten the physical well-being of attackers. Instead, they stealthily snare and quarantine threats, perhaps leaving cybercriminals pining for the days of simple antivirus skirmishes.
But as the cyberverse stretches its tendrils further into the tangible world, the divide between the fantastical ICE of cyberpunk and the silicon-hardened guardians of our networks grows thin. With the Internet of Things (IoT) binding the digital to the physical, the kinetic potential of cybersecurity threats — and therefore the need for increasingly aggressive countermeasures — becomes apparent.
Could the ICE of tomorrow cross the Rubicon, protecting not just data, but physical well-being, through force if necessary? It is conceivable. As cyberpunk media illustrates, ICE could morph from passive digital barricades into active defenders, perhaps not with the murderous flair of its fictional counterparts but with a potency that dissuades through fear of tangible repercussions.
In the taut narrative of cybersecurity’s evolution, ICE remains the enigmatic, omnipresent sentinel, an avatar of our collective desire for safety amidst the binary storm. And while our reality may not yet feature the neon-drenched drama of cyberpunk's lethal ICE, the premise lingers on the periphery of possibility — a silent admonition that as our digital and physical realms converge, so too might our defenses need to wield a fiercer bite. Will the cyberpunk dream of ICE as a dire protector manifest in our world? Time, the grand weaver of fate, shall unfurl the tapestry for us to see.

Murder Drones: Glowing Future AU
2. Кукла.exe
TW: Suicidal Actions. Reader Discretion is advised
It's 5 am. I wake up to a ding. I think I'm the only one that heard it, since the rest are sleeping. I see a notification on my screen.
File Download Ended
██████████████
Open File | Close Notification
I try to press the second button to go into my files folder and delete this shit.
It won't close. I keep choosing it but it won't close.
"The fuck..?" I whisper quietly. "OH F-" I almost yell when I see that somehow there was chosen the Open File option.
⚠︎ Warning! Virus detected ⚠︎
⚠︎ Предупреждение! Обнаружен вирус ⚠︎
I get a warning. My right eye gets all blurry and everything on the right gets translated to Russian.
"Oh sh-shit..." I mumble, slightly glitching. "I fucked up big t-time..."
I instantly move from my bed to my laptop and boot it up to search for an antivirus.
I hear N move. I turn, only to see that he just made himself comfier. How can they even sleep upside down???
I start searching for an antivirus after I put in my password.
"Here you are-are..." I whisper. I download several on my laptop, and I get a cable to transfer them to me.
I connect the cable to my ear and to my device, getting ready to move the files, but my plans aren't happening-
"Привет, Узи. Я вижу, ты пытаешься избавиться от меня. Жаль, что этого НИКОГДА НЕ ПРОИЗОЙДЕТ. / 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘 𝚄𝚣𝚒. 𝙸 𝚜𝚎𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞'𝚛𝚎 𝚝𝚛𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚘 𝚐𝚎𝚝 𝚛𝚒𝚍 𝚘𝚏 𝚖𝚎. 𝚃𝚘𝚘 𝚋𝚊𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚆𝙸𝙻𝙻 𝙽𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁 𝙷𝙰𝙿𝙿𝙴𝙽." A message appears on the screen of the laptop.
"Shit... I virused the-the fucking laptop. Robo-Jesus I'm an idi-idiot." I rumble as quiet as I can.
// Note from Uzi one hour later: "I underes-estimated the situation. I didn't fuck up big time. It's much, MUCH wo-worse.
I take out the cable and try to find a solution.
"Ughhh Uzi, the same w-way you fucked it up you should unfuck it u-up, come on!" I keep telling myself.
|
"You Should-" Cyn starts talking. Loud.
|
"CYN!" I yell. "Gosh... Q-quiet..." I add whispering. But the bad was already done.
V wakes up, and gets off from her upside down position.
"Good morning to you too Uzi, why you up so early?" She asks me tired.
|
"... V? I f-fcked up..." I mumble, while resetting my laptop to the fabric software.
|
"Uzi, the fuck you did, you never say that you fucked up. And what's with the glitched voice?" She asks me slightly worried.
|
"... V-virus." I respond.
|
"A virus? You'll find a way out, don't worry." She responds more relaxed.
I turn towards her to say something, but I decide to not do so. V is horrified.
"WHAT THE..? YOU DID FUCK UP!" She yells scared and loudly. The other two drones wake up.
|
"Th-thanks V." I tell her sarcastically.
N is the first one to get down from him sleeping pose.
"Good morning everyone!" He says without looking at me. "Oh, you were already awa-..." He adds, but he isn't finishing his sentence.
|
"ROBO-GOD, WHAT'S TH-THE FUCKING PROBLEM, HOW B-BAD IS THIS VIRUS!?" I yell annoyed. "Actually I'll see-see myself." I rumble, and go to N's face to see my reflection in his screen.
"... SH-SHIT!" I yell the next second. My right eye is in a gradient red, instead of yellow. Everything makes sense now...
|
"Bitch shut the fuck up I'm trying to sleep!" J says, pulling her wings over her face. She does not understand the gravity of the situation.
"Guys... Please g-get out this virus is so much-ch more dangerous GET OU-OUT!" I yell worried at them, and I run out the door.
N says something confused, but I don't listen to him.
"Hey Uzi, is everything okay-" Dad asks me when he sees me running. I don't respond, and I destroy the door to out house to run on the bunker's hallway.
I get my wings out and start flying to the exit of the building.
I get there and stop. "Why Are You, Running." Cyn asks me.
|
"C-cyn... I do not have t-time to explain." I tell her.
I go out the already open door, and start flying.
I start flying somewhere far from my friends.
Somewhere where they'll be safe.

I am walking in circles in the old church.
I look at where Doll's body was.
I remember when she just collapsed.
Her last words
"дать отпор"
Maybe I could find more about Yeva.
Maybe I'll know what to do.
"Робот-бог, просто заткнись, я просто пытаюсь жить, господи! / 𝚛𝚘𝚋𝚘-𝚐𝚘𝚍, 𝚓𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚜𝚑𝚞𝚝 𝚞𝚙, 𝙸'𝚖 𝚓𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚝𝚛𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚘 𝚕𝚒𝚟𝚎, 𝚓𝚎𝚎𝚣!" I suddenly hear.
|
"What Is She, Doing Here?" Cyn asks.
At this point, this is normal.
"D-doll, what are you doing in m-m-my head." I say emotionlessly. I got enough of this shit.
|
"О, вирус действительно подействовал на тебя. Как кто-то вроде ТЫ спас этот чертов мир? / 𝙾𝚑, 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚟𝚒𝚛𝚞𝚜 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝚊 𝚗𝚞𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝚘𝚗 𝚢𝚘𝚞. 𝙷𝚘𝚠 𝚍𝚒𝚍 𝚜𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝚜𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚕𝚍?" I hear her voice in my head.
I don't say anything. I keep walking in circles.
My phone starts ringing. It's V's number
I pick up. "N? Wh-why are you call-calling?" I ask hearing N's voice.
|
"Uzi? UZI? What happened??? Why did you go? Where are you? Are you safe?" He's asking me panicked. I put on a sad smile.
|
"I'm trying to-to protect y-you. Don't w-worry about me." I respond. "B-bye." I say, and then I close.

"Th-that's why I am not with th-them right now." I mumble. "Can't you g-go away?" I add tired. I can't do this today.
|
"И потерять возможное тело? Я очень надеюсь, что твое тело не перегреется, но примерно через час я буду КОНТРОЛИРОВАТЬ. / 𝙰𝚗𝚍 𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚎 𝚊 𝚙𝚘𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚋𝚕𝚎 𝚋𝚘𝚍𝚢? 𝙸 𝚍𝚘 𝚜𝚞𝚛𝚎 𝚑𝚘𝚙𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚋𝚘𝚍𝚢 𝚠𝚘𝚗'𝚝 𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚝, 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚒𝚗 𝚊𝚋𝚘𝚞𝚝 𝚊𝚗 𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝙸'𝚕𝚕 𝚋𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝚒𝚗 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚃𝚁𝙾𝙻." She responds.

"If I-i go somewhere wh-where nobo-nobody's going to find me, and die-die, will you be able to get to anyone el-else?" I ask her, getting worried.

"Э-э... Нет? О, Робо-Бог, я выбрал не тот дрон. Иди на хуй. / 𝚄𝚑𝚑... 𝙽𝚘? 𝙾𝚑 𝚁𝚘𝚋𝚘-𝙶𝚘𝚍 𝙸 𝚌𝚑𝚘𝚜𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚠𝚛𝚘𝚗𝚐 𝚍𝚛𝚘𝚗𝚎. 𝙶𝚘 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚜𝚎𝚕𝚏." She says annoyed.
𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂~𖥂
I am sitting on the enge of the hole in the middle of the church.
I've been debating if I should really do it or get with it for the past 20 minutes.
"Тик-так, тик-так, часы тикают! / T𝚒𝚌𝚔-𝚝𝚘𝚌𝚔, 𝚝𝚒𝚌𝚔-𝚝𝚘𝚌𝚔, 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚌𝚕𝚘𝚌𝚔 𝚒𝚜 𝚝𝚒𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐!" Doll says, on an amused voice.
I take out my phone and decide to talk for the last time with... Everyone I guess..
I decide to call V, since she's most of the time with the other two drones, and because N doesn't have a phone yet.
"THE FUCK YOU WENT????" Is the first this I hear when V picks up. I laugh sadly.
|
"Hi!... How-how's N..?" I ask her. "I-is N there..?"
|
"He's outside the bunker, searching for you. Where did you go, is everything alright??" V asks me worried.
|
"What..? Fu-fuck..." I say, avoiding her question. "Th-then... Tell him I lo-lo-loved him..." I mumble.
|
"Uzi, what are you doing..? UZI DON'T YOU DARE. DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE!" V yells very worried at me. I think mom heard her, since she appears in the image.
|
"... H-hi mom... I gu-guess we part ways ag-again..." I tell her.
|
"UZI, GET YOUR ASS BACK HOME WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO????" She asks me. Worried like everyone else.
|
"I FU-FUCKED UP, ALRIGHT-RIGHT??" I yell, bursting in tears. "I DO-DON'T WANT TO KILL ANY OF-OF MY FRIENDS!"
Mom is speechless.
"... Это неловко. / ... 𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚒𝚜 𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚊𝚛𝚛𝚊𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚗𝚐." I hear. Doll is laughing at me.
"Gu-guys.... Just tell N that I lo-loved him very m-much. I love you-ou guys too!..." I mumble, hanging up.
"Ты собираешься прыгнуть сейчас? / 𝚈𝚘𝚞 𝚐𝚘𝚗𝚗𝚊 𝚓𝚞𝚖𝚙 𝚗𝚘𝚠?" Doll asks me nonchalantly.
|
"Uzi, Do Not, Do That. I Do Not Want, To Die." Cyn tells me. I ignore her.
Who programmed us to be able to cry?
I shouldn't be crying. But I am. I mean, I will never see anyone again... N, mom, even dad...
I get up, wipe my tears, and look at the void in front of me.
"B-bye world!" I say smiling. But I'm not happy. I'm anything but happy.
And I jump.

Neither was a solution, but there was only one right choice. The boys and Starlight had all agreed that handing Ryan over to Homelander was a catastrophic idea. Even if they were to ignore the ethics of leaving a child with his murderous, Nazi fucking father, the inherent dangers of creating another Homelander was too big of a reason to ignore. Even the fact that Hughie himself would probably agree with the decision brought no comfort to Butcher. Hughie wasn’t the sort to throw anybody to the wolves if he could help it, especially not children.
The wound of Becca’s passing was still sore and wide open; Homelander taking Hughie was pouring salt in his blood. Butcher had to wonder just how much more he could stand. What else could Homelander take from him? How else could he make him suffer? Butcher hadn’t given Homelander an inch when he’d given the news, showing up at his flat to tell him in person what he had done with Hughie; but they both knew it was a front. There’d be no point to it all if it didn’t hurt.
The only silver lining was that, at least in theory, Hughie was still alive. There wasn’t much point in hostage negotiations without a hostage. Corpses made for poor bargaining chips. ‘Probably’ wasn’t good enough though. Until Butcher saw it with his own eyes, Hughie was Schrödinger's cat, both alive and dead. Homelander had promised proof, though was yet to make good on it; and in the meantime, there wasn’t much any of them could do besides wait. They could hardly plan a rescue mission if they didn’t even know where Hughie needed rescuing from.
They were in the Flat Iron when it happened. Butcher was pouring himself his fourth whiskey of the day, pointedly ignoring the frowned looks of disapproval and concern that were thrown at him. Frenchie and Kimiko were skiving off at Frenchie’s desk, talking to one another in a silent blur of hands. M.M. was there, tidying up the place; no one had bothered to remind him yet that he didn’t work with them any more. He came every day on his lunch break, with the vain hope that they had something, in spite of assurances that he would be told as soon as they had anything.
Butcher knocked back his drink without a grimace and wondered how long it would all last. Over forty eight hours without a word and the silence was reaching its breaking point. He’d snap sooner or later, say some things he’d regret, because Hughie wasn’t around to put him back in his place any more. No more canary to chirp harsh truths, to irritate him into making the right choice. Butcher wished he could feel free of his moral compass, but he was shackled by its absence.
With a sigh, he began to trawl through his emails, trying to kid himself that he was working. Not in the way Hughie was. It wasn’t the scrambled email address that piqued his interest, nor that it got flagged as spam. It was the heading. Butcher wasn’t versed well in technology. He was no luddite, but he wasn’t overly fond of it. He could hear Hughie scolding him for clicking the link, talking about how he technically knew more about hardware than software, but he knew enough to know that the antivirus they had wasn’t the best, despite being a branch of the government. He wished the kid was there so he could smack him upside the head and tell him to shut up.
For once, it was a good thing he didn’t listen to Hughie.
It took him a second to understand what it was that he was seeing. It was a live camera feed of different empty rooms and a lawn at different angles, surrounded by thick forest. It took a little navigation before he found him. Before he found them .
“Shit.”
Heads turned at Butcher’s breathy exclamation. His gaze didn’t waver. If he blinked, he might miss it. If he moved, Hughie might be gone again, forever.
“It’s Hughie.”
The other three scrambled to Butcher’s desk, crowding around his chair to stare at the screen; and there he was, living and breathing, the tinny sounds of his footsteps just audible. Following Homelander outside. Butcher scrambled to click on the right screen at Frenchie and M.M.’s insistence to follow Hughie. They watched, breaths held tighter in their chests with every step, watching Hughie walk to the tree like he was about to face a firing squad. What happened next was too quick for anyone to actually see. There was a collective shout of dismay as they saw lasers firing directly at Hughie, but horror quickly turned to confusion. For Hughie was now in the forefront of the shot, panting hard and completely naked. The conclusion was reached at the same time, but Butcher was the one who verbalised their realisation.
“He turned him into a fucking supe.”
There were no microphones outside, so they could only guess what it was that was happening. They saw Hughie’s dismay and embarrassment, turned to panic as Homelander moved over to him. From what Butcher could guess, it looked like a countdown on Homelander’s lips. Hughie disappeared without warning and Butcher was left scrambling to find where he’d gone. Naked still, he was in a bedroom, rifling through its drawers.
“He cannot teleport his clothes,” Frenchie murmured.
“He’s lucky to be alive, dosin’ him up with V.”
If Butcher wasn’t enraptured with the live feed, then he was drinking in the proof of Hughie’s life remaining intact. There wasn’t space in his head to question why he’d been turned into a supe. They could muse on Homelander’s insanity later. For now, they all watched Hughie go down the stairs. While the outside wasn’t miked up, the house seemed to be bugged at every corner.
“No, no, no, no, no,” M.M. muttered, as Hughie’s voice rose and Homelander’s became more serious.
“What are you fuckin’ doin’, lad?” Butchered murmured, leaning in closer to the screen.
When pushed, Hughie tended to run his mouth. Butcher had thought the kid to be smart enough to button his lip when talking to his captor, but emotions were evidently running too high for rational thought; and Homelander had run out of patience. They all flinched as one as they watched Homelander grab Hughie by his ear, dragging him to his side. Whiskey and bile roiled painfully in the pit of Butcher’s stomach as the sounds of Hughie’s cries came through his computer. Butcher had never witnessed a car crash before, but he’d seen shit worse than car crashes. He’d learnt to look away, because there was no point adding another scar to his collection, because after the tenth and twentieth and thirtieth time of seeing some horrific shit, it lost its magnetism; but not this time. He had to watch. Butcher was compelled. Whatever Homelander was about to do, he needed to see it. If he was on the cusp of snuffing out one of the last few lights in his life, then he needed to bear witness.
Nobody breathed as they watched Homelander hoist Hughie under his arm like he didn’t weigh a thing. The horror remained as Homelander roughly tugged down Hughie’s pants; but then, bafflement took over everything. Homelander wasn’t killing him. What he was doing could barely pass as a form of torture; but it did class as child abuse.
Uncomfortable didn’t cut it. Seeing Hughie being beaten up would have been its own kind of torture, but there was a whole layer to this that was entirely different. It was more than just seeing him in pain. They were watching him be humiliated. Homelander was treating him like a child, scolding him like a child and Hughie was incapable of doing anything besides responding like one. By being audience to his punishment, they became unwilling participants in his humiliation; and they themselves were being punished by witnessing it. Hughie probably had no idea they were watching. He hadn’t seemed to notice the cameras yet; but Homelander knew and that was enough. It was plenty.
He had been meticulous. There were no blindspots. Every camera in the room offered a different angle to Hughie’s mortification, and the sounds of struck flesh and his furious cries were being picked up on every microphone.
Nobody was able to tear themselves away. The feed was in colour, so they could see the angry colour Homelander’s hand left behind. They watched Hughie flail, heard his angry screeches, saw his legs kick and his fists pound, yet Homelander didn’t waver. It was when Homelander’s voice cut through the tumult of pain and fury did Butcher finally act. He heard Hughie again, trying to explain to him how you couldn’t just unplug computers at the socket, Butcher, it wasn’t good for them, you had to shut it down first. He ripped out the plug.
Butcher sat up and turned to them all, a hard look in his eye.
“We didn’t see that. None of us saw it, alright? When we find him, we didn’t see diddly fuckin’ squat. Got it?”
A chorus of solemn, tight lipped nods were his response. But then-
“Turn it back on.”
Butcher’s head snapped to M.M., strong arms folded across a broad chest. His face was pinched in a brittle expression, worry and anger and nearly everything that Butcher felt reflected back at him.
“What?” Butcher snapped. “You ain’t seen enough?”
“It’s still Homelander. I wanna make sure Hughie’s not dead.”
Butcher paused, then bent down to plug his computer back in with a muttered swear on his breath. It was a tense wait for everything to come back to life, but the feed was back on the screen soon enough. They heard the muffled sounds of screaming before Butcher could find the right screen. It only brought a little comfort to see that Homelander wasn’t present, but not much more. Hughie was kneeling on a bed, a pillow wrapped in his arms and crushed against his face, shoulders bowed as he curled around himself. Another moment they weren’t supposed to see. Homelander had weaponised their need for proof, forcing them to invade his privacy, turning them into unwitting voyeurs.
“He ain’t dead.” Butcher clicked off of the feed. They had already seen too much. “That’s enough.”
He sat back in his chair, staring at the email. It was better than nothing. It would be encrypted to all hell and it wasn’t good enough, not in the slightest, but it was something. He read the heading and felt the desire for violence coil in his gut.
INCENTIVE.
Homelander was going to die. Even if Butcher went down in the process.
-
The adrenaline crash hit Hughie hard. He’d had no intention of falling asleep, but somehow he ended up collapsed face first on the bed, the pillow still wrapped in his arms. The sun was setting outside, yet despite its parting, the room was pleasantly warm. Hughie pushed himself up. He rested on his hip and rubbed his face with both hands. Fuck. Homelander was probably still downstairs. Colour rose to his face as he thought back on what had happened. Just thinking about it was making him cringe.
It wasn’t just what had happened either. It was his response to it. The thought of how he’d dangled off of Homelander’s arm, thrashing and screeching, rather than taking it still and silent made him nauseous. It would have been better if Homelander had just beaten him up. Torture would have been better. Torture wasn’t… that . It wasn’t something you did to kids. Not that anybody should hit their kids, but a spanking was a punishment traditionally intended for children and that was why Homelander had done it. Because it cut deeper than a simple beating. Because it made Hughie small.
It was to infantilize and humiliate, and the worst thing about it all was that it had worked. Hughie had been humiliated. He was mortified. It made him want to curl up in a hole and never come back out. Because it was “for children”, the fact that he’d reacted the way he did made it so much worse. Crying out when you were being beaten was understandable. Screaming whilst being tortured was acceptable. But kicking up a fuss over being spanked? That was just pathetic. It was laughable. It had hurt too. It was still hurting now, the sting faded to a warm ache.
Hughie pulled his hands away from his face and looked down at them, as if his palms held all the answers. His shoulders slumped in a bone weary sigh. How the fuck had his life come to this? Abducted by a psychopath forcing him to play house. Forcing drugs and powers upon him just so he could fit into his fantasy. How long would this go on for? Or rather, how long could Hughie survive?
“Hughie?”
Homelander’s voice came up from downstairs, but Hughie jolted as though it had been whispered in his ear.
“Y-yeah?”
“It’s time for dinner.”
Hughie’s face returned to his hands. It hadn’t been twenty four hours and he already wanted to die.
“Okay, I’m coming,” he called, reluctance seeping into his tone.
Hughie trudged to the kitchen, the back of his neck and his cheeks already burning. In spite of his embarrassment, Hughie forced himself to look Homelander dead in the eye when he came into the kitchen. It didn’t matter that the face he put on was kind, that the smile he wore was gentle. He knew what it was trying to hide: an insufferable smugness.
“How are you feeling, kiddo?”
For once, Hughie finally understood Butcher. He’d always wondered how he’d managed to stand up to Homelander, talking to him as though he couldn’t slice him in half at any second. It was his rage. It overrode even the instincts of self preservation. For just one moment, Hughie would have given anything to punch Homelander, regardless of the consequences. Unlike Butcher though, his desire to survive was greater than his fury. For now.
“Fine.”
Homelander hummed. It took all of Hughie’s willpower not to back away as Homelander moved towards him. Resistance was pointless. Even suped up, it was obvious that Homelander was still far more powerful than Hughie. He could do little more than yell when Homelander pulled him forward, wrapping an arm around his chest, pinning his arms to his side.
“Hey!”
Two fingers had snaked between Hughie’s waistband and were already working them down.
“It’s alright,” Homelander chuckled, sending a thrill of embarrassment up Hughie’s spine. “I’m just checking on how you’re doing.”
“I’m fine!” Hughie yelled, trying to wriggle out of Homelander’s grasp, but fingers bit into the flesh of his upper arm and the almighty arm squeezed until pulling in a deep breath was nearly impossible.
“We can either do this standing up.” Hughie could hear already how Homelander’s patience was beginning to thin. “Or we can do this over my knee.”
Hughie slumped forward, head hanging low. Fuck. What choice did he really have? He couldn’t stop Homelander and he had no idea how to use his powers or if they could even be useful in this situation. Maybe he couldn’t teleport great distances? If he could, it was far too early to tell and Hughie wasn’t about to try it now.
“Which one, Hughie?” Homelander asked, the sternness in his tone bordering on dangerous.
“Standing up,” Hughie mumbled, monotone and defeated.
“Good boy.”
Hughie’s form stiffened, shoulders hunched up to his ears, his face burning hot as Homelander bared his ass once more. A noise escaped his clenched jaw as a splayed hand gave a generous rub over his cheeks and thighs.
“Hm. You’re still pretty pink, Hughie.”
Hughie had never prayed so hard for the earth to swallow him up before now.
“Your healing factor’s pretty slow,” Homelander commented casually, pulling up Hughie’s clothes once more with a loud snap of his waistband.
The arm keeping him in place finally released him, but Hughie remained where he was. He had nothing to say. His face burned. His vow to keep eye contact was broken. He couldn’t even raise his head. His hands were curled into fists, tremors rippling up his arms. Was this supposed to be his place in life? The victim. The loser. The pathetic one, the small one. To be always humiliated and forever looked down upon, no matter how hard he raged against it? It wasn’t fair. He didn’t deserve this. It wasn’t fair.
“Hey.”
It took Hughie a second for his brain to catch up. Both arms encircled him this time. A hand was between his shoulder blades, another on his head. Stroking his hair. His chest was pressed flat against Homelander’s. His eyes widened.
“I just needed to make sure you were alright. Okay?”
Rage was watered down with fear and confusion. Being held by a man who could turn him into lunch meat with one squeeze gave Hughie a stark reminder of his mortality. If Homelander wanted him to sink into the embrace, Hughie would just have to disappoint. He was actively fighting off the urge to shove Homelander off him. He didn’t want him anywhere near him. He didn’t raise his arms. He stood, awkward and stiff, praying for it to be over.
“Okay,” he answered. There was nothing else to say and luckily for him, it worked.
Homelander finally pulled away. He clasped Hughie by his arms, giving him a squeeze and a smile. “C’mon. Let’s eat before it gets cold.”
Hughie nodded and hoped that at least one of them would choke on their food so that this nightmare could end.

PROTECT YOUR FILES AND RECOVER FROM LAPTOP VIRUSES: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SAFEGUARDING YOUR DATA
When your laptop is infected with a virus, there is a misconception that the only solution is to wipe or format the PC, resulting in the loss of files and programs. However, there is an alternative method that can help you keep your files intact.
First, check if your laptop has a restore point available, which is typically created at an earlier date as a fallback option when issues arise with your PC. If you have a restore point prior to the virus infection, follow these steps to restore your laptop:
1. Access the restore point settings on your laptop.
2. Choose a restore point from the available dates (there may be multiple restore points).
3. Initiate the restoration process and allow your laptop to revert to the selected earlier date.
4. During the restoration process, you may lose files or programs that were installed after the restore point date.
5. After the restoration is complete, you might be prompted to reinstall any programs you consider safe.
Keep in mind that the virus could have been embedded in a program or file that you downloaded shortly before realizing your PC was infected. Therefore, reinstalling those programs may not be necessary after your laptop has been restored to an earlier date.
Please note that this information may not be accurate in all cases, as the effectiveness of system restore depends on various factors such as the type of virus, system settings, and the availability of restore points. It's always a good idea to have reliable antivirus software and regularly back up your important files to ensure their safety.
Below is an article that shows you a step-by-step guide to creating a restore point, restoring your laptop to an earlier date, and jara.
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-restore...
Please feel free to share this valuable information with anyone who might find it useful, either now or in the future. By doing so, you can help others protect their files and programs when faced with a virus infection. Thank you for spreading the word!

Here's some TTCC character references I am currently working on! The third image were quick doodles of the ideas I had, and the first two are the final designs I will be lining and coloring soon, for now, I wanted to share my progress on a few of them. The first two I finished are Colt and Michi, and with these two specifically; I think they'd be good work friends. Actually, best friends. I'll go into details about them once I introduce everyone; ⚙️1. The Silver Bullet Term: a simple and seemingly magical solution to a complicated problem. / a quick solution to a difficult problem. Name: Colt Paterson Age: ~60s Colt is an old timer from the western sister location of COG Inc. He's no nonsense and likes to get straight to the point when it comes to his work. He wrangles his fellow suits into coming up with solutions to their problems without having to sacrifice a lot of time dwelling over details. He likes to get everyone's attention by cracking his whip (he had literal guns, but he's no longer allowed to have those on COG Inc property because he kept shooting holes through the roof.) ⚙️2. The Ninja Term: a highly-skilled professional or an expert. Corporate professionals also use 'guru' or 'thought-leaders' in place of ninja. Name: Michi ??? Age: ~60 The whereabouts of how Michi was even hired on at COG Inc remains a mystery to this day, its rumored that he came from a specialized section of the company- given how unbelievably skilled Michi is at their job. However, Michi will never tell. They always silently come in to do their work, then like the wind, they're gone. Seemingly never to be seen again, unless you know where they like to hide. They are always there, its just most Cogs tend to not notice them, which is impressive, but also intimidating. You can tell Michi is not pleased with the younger recruits if you begin to see a ton of notes lying around the office giving you step-by-step guides on how to do your job. ⚙️3. The Cap Melter Term: This is in reference to the alarming rate the polar ice caps around the world are melting. Name: Breezie Windchill Age: ~40s A Walrus Cog with a love for the sun, far more than what most others would consider normal. Breezie absolutely adores tropical paradises and oceanic views, so much so that she's devising a plan to flood the entire world to achieve her dream. She wants everyone to enjoy the everlasting glory that is summer, to do that, she thinks its a good idea to get rid of the coldest places in the world. After all, Breezie hates the cold- so its a necessary means to an end. Summer is also the time where she can actually have time off- so by her logic, by making it summer forever, it means she can finally enjoy her time off indefinitely. ⚙️4. The Pop-Up
Term: often trick people by posing as legitimate security software such as an antivirus program. They usually display a warning of non-existent threats with the intention of panicking you into action. Their hope is that you'll click on the pop-up and pay them to eliminate the “threat”.
Name: Mac N. Tosh Age: ~20s Mac is often described by most Cogs as being a nuisance, chatter box that the moment that you give him any attention- he won't leave you alone. He is also notorious for showing up at the worst moments, he stands by somewhere in the building where if he things you are talking to him, he immediately pops up and begins to assault you with words. Management has tried numerous times to get him to cool his jets, but its a force of nature with Mac- he likes talking, and he likes giving people sweet deals for things they never asked for. Or he tries to get you to buy into things you never asked for, or tries to trick people into claiming earnings they never even entered for. Whatever the case may be, Cogs and Toons alike do not like Mac's presence anytime they see him. ----------------------- With the intros out of the way, to talk about Colt and Michi specifically. They are long time best friends, they both met in the earlier points of their careers (around their mid 20s). Both of them get along well because both of them are stubborn old men who don't really like change, but also that both of them are damn good at what they do- despite the world changing around them. If anyone is unable to find Michi, you can count on Colt to sniff out his best friend, as Colt is the only one who knows where Michi might be hiding at any given point of the day. The two also have such a strong bond because: - Colt was there whenever Michi was badly damaged, so much so that COG Inc didn't have any frame replacements for Michi since their body type is very unique, and unfortunately, irreplaceable. Colt helped patch Michi up to the state he is in currently, and is aware that Michi now has a much harder time communicating with other Cogs than he did previously. - Colt learned Japanese in order to understand Michi whenever they were first hired on, which made communicating between them and the higher ups a lot easier. Now that Michi is damaged, they're still able to communicate via writing on notepads. However, if Michi wants to have a private conversation with Colt, they will write in hiragana, just so he is the only one who knows what they are saying.

Computer Services: How an MSP Supports Your Device
Computers are an essential part of our daily lives, and it's hard to imagine going through a day without using them. With the increasing use of technology, the need for computer services has also increased. An MSP (Managed Service Provider) is a company that offers computer services to businesses and individuals. In this article, we will discuss how an MSP can support your device and the benefits of using its services.
What is an MSP?
A Managed Service Provider (MSP) is a company that provides a range of IT services to businesses and individuals. MSPs offer a wide range of services, from basic computer support to advanced network management. They specialize in proactive maintenance, monitoring, and support of IT systems and can help businesses reduce their IT costs.
MSPs vs. Traditional IT Support
MSPs are different from traditional IT support in several ways. Traditional IT support is reactive, which means that they wait for a problem to occur before they fix it. In contrast, MSPs are proactive and work to prevent problems before they occur. MSPs also provide a range of services, including remote and onsite support, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning. They are a one-stop shop for all IT needs, whereas traditional IT support may only offer limited services.
Benefits of Using an MSP
Using an MSP has several benefits for businesses and individuals. Some of the significant benefits are:
1. Cost-Effective Using an MSP can be more cost-effective than hiring an in-house IT team. MSPs offer their services on a subscription basis, which means that businesses only pay for the services they need. This can help businesses save money on IT costs.
2. Expertise and Knowledge MSPs have a team of IT professionals with expertise and knowledge in various areas of IT. This means that businesses can benefit from the collective knowledge and expertise of the team.
3. 24/7 Support MSPs offer 24/7 support, which means that businesses can get help whenever they need it. This can be particularly useful for businesses that operate outside of regular business hours.
4. Improved Security MSPs have expertise in cybersecurity and can help businesses improve their security posture. They can provide proactive security measures, such as firewalls, antivirus software, and intrusion detection systems.
5. Scalability MSPs can provide scalable IT solutions that can grow with a business. As a business grows, its IT needs will also grow, and MSPs can provide solutions to meet those needs.

Mutual Desire - Chapter 54
*Warning - Adult Content*
There had to be a way for Damien Clarke to convince Alexander Nabokov without having to offer him his body.
Damien was convinced that there was another solution hiding somewhere, ready to be discovered.
Maybe he was just being naive or a little too optimistic but hope was a powerful tool capable of convincing everyone that everything was possible, even the most unimaginable things.
Damien was convinced that he could find a common ground with Nabokov.
Sex was certainly not the exclusive thing that could be offered.
"Sorry, Nick. I'm kidding," Damien hurried eagerly saying, the words escaping uncontrollably.
Never in his life had Damien wanted to take back words said as it was the case right now.
Granted, he had managed to convince himself that there was another way to get through Nabokov's degrading offer but he intended to positively confirm it was indeed the case before letting Nick know and not the other way around.
If for any reason, Damien was unable to find this ‘other way’ then he would have given Nick false hopes and Nick would never forgive him for that and with good reason.
To say that his software wasn't chosen and then to retract was one thing but to do the direct opposite was simply cruel on his part.
"What?" Nick exclaimed, his eyes finally meeting Damien's.
Damien had no way of going back on his words or pretend not to have said anything since he knew that Nick had heard him right.
"I was joking. Alexander, I mean Mr Nabokov has chosen your software," Damien says with a hesitant smile that wasn't really one.
Damien had no idea know why he had lied.
Well, technically it wasn't a lie as such because Nabokov had indeed said that he would choose Nick's software but on the condition that Damien prostituted himself for one night.
Damien was aware that he had just dug his own grave.
He was completely ambushed now because he had no intention of accepting Nabokov's offer which automatically made Nick's dream impossible to come true and he had no other solution in mind for the software to be chosen without needing to spread his legs for Nabokov.
The man had made it clear to him that he wanted that and only that from him.
And despite this clear and concise message from Nabokov, Damien managed to be convinced that there was another way to make the billionaire man listen to reason or to put another proposal on the table.
It was hard to say whether Damien was simply naive or just delusional to the point of persuading himself of things without concrete evidence.
Nick stared at Damien for a moment, trying to comprehend what his best friend had just said to him.
"You bastard," Nick let out with a broad smile, his eyes sparkling with excitement and amazement.
At least Nick wasn't angry at Damien's involuntary ‘joke’.
On the contrary, his face shone like thousand of lights, giving Damien exactly what he wanted but also a twinge in his heart because it wasn't deserved.
"Seriously? Did he really choose the antivirus?" Nick said, excited like a child on Christmas.
What a trick question.
The answer of course depended on a certain response to a certain proposition.
Damien tried not to appear uncomfortable but he was probably unsuccessful at that.
"Um, yes, he said that the changes made were good and, yeah."
Inexplicable joy on Nick's face was the only thing that prevented Damien from retracting and confessing the whole truth.
"Wow, man! I don"t know what to say."
Nick's joy only increased Damien's overwhelming guilt by a notch.
"Thanks, Dam. It's all thanks to you."
If Nick knew what these words were doing to Damien, he would quickly take them back so he wouldn't participate in his best friend's torture even more so.
The two friends shook hands and knocked their fists together, doing their signature hand gesture they have since high school.
"We're celebrating and getting hammered tonight!"
Damien knew that he was going to need an excessive amount of alcohol to forget this shitty day.
A day that wasn't ready to end because although Damien only wanted to go home, he had unfinished business to settle with Nabokov who awaited a response to his sexual proposal.
He hadn't intended going, as that would only have made Nabokov's completely degrading sexual offer seem normal.
But now Damien had no other choice, since he needed to discuss the other ‘means’ with Nabokov to reverse the decision.
Damien had gotten himself in some deep shit where he risked losing his best friend.
He really needed to speak with Nabokov.
Fortunately for Damien, Nick seemed to be stuck in some kind of unicorn and rainbow world to further question him about his conversation with Nabokov and Damien didn't give him the chance either, telling him that he was going to ‘get something to eat’.
It was obviously a lie because Damien had no appetite.
He just desperately wanted to get out of the office and be left alone for a moment.
Damien Clarke took a moment before opening the message, as a sudden thought crossed his mind.
How did Alexander Nabokov manage to text him if he had blocked the man in his contacts?
Come to think of it, that question was a dumb one, since Nabokov had proven time and time again that there was nothing he couldn't do when he wanted something.
Damien opened the message, his heart"s pump pumping irregularly.
[I'm back in my office. I'm waiting for you.]
Damien re-read the message a dozen times as if it would change with each re-reading.
Now he had to find a pretext to go to see Nabokov in his office without Nick suspecting anything.
Maybe pretending to make a phone call would do the trick.
That's exactly what Damien did and Nick, too busy wandering about that report he needed to do had barely looked at Damien, letting out a sound that made Damien think he had heard him or at least some of what he had said.
In a two-minute walk, Damien arrived in front of the large office of Nabokov's secretary who greeted him with a big smile and invited him to enter without Damien having to say a word.
Damien began to wonder if she was aware of the nature of his ‘relationship’ with Nabokov.
Pushing these thoughts aside, Damien entered Nabokov's office without even knocking.
He could have stayed outside the door for minutes just to prepare for his conversation with Nabokov but with the receptionist who was a few meters away, Damien rejected the idea.
When he entered, Damien's gaze immediately landed to the back where Nabokov was.
The billionaire had his back facing Damien, standing in front of a large window that gave a superb view of Manhattan.
He was speaking but Damien was unable to pinpoint what he was saying since he was too far away.
He didn't have a phone on his ear, his Bluetooth device hanging on his left ear while his arms were crossed.
Damien thoroughly observed him from head to toe, admiring his muscular back and buttocks that his pants, surely custom-made, highlighted well.
Damien suddenly emerged from his admiration of Nabokov when Nabokov slightly turned for the first time, throwing at Damien his signature impassive look and then turning right away back to the beautiful view as if Damien's presence was insignificant to him.
Damien hardly took it personal, since not having Nabokov's attention was what he wanted.
He then decided to take advantage of Nabokov's inattention on him to have a more in-depth look at the man's office which impressed Damien by its simplicity which remained, despite the flagrant luxury.
Damien was completely lost in his disordered thoughts, analyzing Nabokov's office with meticulousness and fascination.
He let his thoughts wander, thinking of everything and nothing.
Then a painting captured his attention.
It was a simple drawing of a lake with a mountain in the background.
The painting wasn't anything special but the details that the creator had put on its creation impressed Damien who couldn't help but to observe the art.
It is surely due to this that Damien hardly noticed that Nabokov had step forward, facing him, a few meters from him, his gray gaze on him.
Always that unreadable stare. Damien's heart restated its uncontrollable beating. Nabokov wasn't very close but he wasn't very far.
He was just close enough to Damien that he wouldn't be having a heart attack at any moment.
The Russian man was staring at Damien and he couldn't look away because Nabokov's eyes hypnotized him.
This man haunted him and Damien was fully aware of it.
Damien didn't know how he should approach the conversation considering the explosive and emotional way that the recent discussion between him and Nabokov had ended.
Nabokov with his unreadable expression gave the impression that he was no longer upset.
It was evidently a good thing but it still didn't encourage Damien to be the one to start the discussion, when doing so was in his best interest.
Damien just didn't know what to say, though he knew exactly what Nabokov expected of him.
The man demanded an answer to his proposal, an answer that Damien had but for some inexplicable reason was unable to formulate it.
It was as if Damien had forgotten that he had a mouth that he could use to speak.
He had become mute, as if before him, an incredible event was happening on which left him speechless.

Q1 a) THREE SECURITY TOOLS
1.FIREWALL
The most important security tools.
Its job is to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network.
All messages are entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall. The firewall examines each message and blocks those messages that do not meet security check.
The Firewall is very useful, but it has limitations also.
A skilled hacker knew how to create data and programs that are believing like trusted firewalls.it means they can pass through without any problem
2. Antivirus Software
Antivirus software is a program which is designed to prevent, detect, and remove viruses and other malware attacks on the individual computer, networks, and IT systems.
Tt also protects our computers and networks from the variety of threats and viruses such as Trojan horses, worms, browser hijackers, spyware, ransomware.
Most antivirus program comes with an auto-update feature and enabling the system to check for new viruses and threats regularly.
3. Data Encryption
Data encryption is very important when you have top secret files that you don’t want to be read even if they are stolen
Encrypted communication protocols provide a solution to this lack of privacy.
The encrypted web access provided for customer security is used by attackers because it is difficult to monitor.
Q1 b) DIFFERENCE B/W PRIVACY AND SECURITY
PRIVACY
Privacy defines the ability to secure personally identifiable data.
Privacy can't be adept without security.
Privacy defines protecting sensitive information associated to individuals and organizations.
Privacy programs concentrate on protection personal information just like passwords, log-in credentials, etc.
SECURITY
Security define protecting against unauthorized access.
Security can be adept without privacy.
Security supports protection for some types of data and information such as the ones that are saved electronically.
The security programs defines the set of regulations and protocols to secure each confidential information.
