I sing Antinous, the divine boy, the morning star, the King of flowers with sweet limbs. You are one with Osiris, O pretty God! Come in your boat, you who are fire and water, bear and lion, peace and war! Bring with you the fresh scents of perfume and offer joy to our hearts!
Come with Dionysus the noisy, in intoxication and peace, with the panthers and the maenads and let us taste the pure wine of your ecstasy!
Come with the most beautiful, the marine Aphrodite, who subjects gods and men to her power, she who surrounds the sea and rejoices with the nymphs along the shores!
Only then, o pure deities, will my heart be in celebration, a mirror for the sacred colors of spring.
Created this anthem this morning, it could become a nice personal Elaphebolion festival during Dionysia Te Astika: feel free to use it! Glory to the gods!

If you want to get one of my Pride pieces before the end of the month, it's not too late! In fact, this weekend is the ideal time to place that order.

Vue des ruines de la ville, prise du côté du sud-ouest — “View of the city ruins, taken from the south-west”
Antinous, a Greek boy from Bithynia, was Emperor Hadrian’s closest lover. While sailing the Nile, Antinous drowned under strange circumstances at age 18. Following his death, in a controversial move, Hadrian deified Antinous as Osiris and Dionysos. Additionally Hadrian identified the rosy lotus of the Nile as a symbol of the boy.
Antinoöpolis was founded by Hadrian not too far from where Antinous drowned, and the city became the center of worship for Antinous Osiris. Hadrian would then move to Athens, where he established an annual festival to commemorate Antinous each October: Antinoeia.
Edme-François Jomard. 1817.

My interest and love of ancient Greece is reflected not only in my library, but in my living space as well. I'm especially fond of the vignette featuring a larger-than-life bust of Emperor Hadrian's beloved, Antinous. Above is a framed oil cloth depicting the panthers of Dionysos eating grapes which is a copy of a painted panel in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The cabinet to the viewer's right displays mostly Greek replicas. The exceptions being the terra-cotta head of a deified Roman empress based on the so-called "Juno Ludovisi" in the Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Altemps, inv. 8631. On the middle self is a bronze bust of a Roman lady mounted on a cylindrical base and sporting a late Severan hairstyle.
There's more in my bedroom, but that room is limited to only very good friends. Oh well!

I normally think of Jim Morrison as being more Dionysos, but this makes sense.
Of course, it would also make sense if Antinous had been an incarnation of Dionysos to begin with, so perhaps it all adds up...

Antinoos Antinoos Can you still hear us, Hear us calling From Nile's shores? Antinoos Antinoos Can you still hear us Beneath the waters, You who have gone before? Do your eyes still stare upwards Half-lidded in the drunkenness Of desire? Do you still tilt back your head, Hold open your lips To be kissed? Do the corners of your mouth still Turn up in a smile Knowing divers will, Any moment, now, Pull you back to the surface Because, surely, You are too young to die? Are your eardrums still locked From the pressure of your descent? Your ear canals glittering white from salt Filled as they are with water heavier, That of our prayers, Made brackish from tears? Are the rich locks of your hair Now glistening ever richer Made iridescent from seaweed? Just as the Nile embraces you Like a shell seduces Its unexpected guest Offering him a plush bed Upon which it embrides him With veils upon veils of pearl-- Are your strong arms, too Still locked In an eternal embrace? Just as they were in life When brave Hadrian took you from behind And bold Sabina rode you apace? Did Isis ever find it, Find that member of yours Or like the legend, Was it swallowed by a fish? Or does it still stand, Proud and ready For love's attentions, Waiting, A sundial in the depths: Counting down the hours As you lie there, patient Expecting your beloved Upon the soft velvet Of the river's bridal bed green? (Did Hadrian forever swear off fish Because they had consumed you Or did he eat nothing else ever after Hoping to be made with you One flesh, One being?) Or Did you grow gills, Antinoos Did you grow fins and scales, too Did you grow to like it there Now the favourite of Neptune? Did the scratch of his beard Bring back at least a shadow From that bearlike rasp Of your emperor's, king's, You'll forever and ever now miss? Antinoos, You are the god of those lost at sea Antinoos, You are the god of those lost in love Antinoos, The holy patron Of those of us About to, too, drown-- Antinoos, Hear my prayer You who have gone beyond You who can take us beyond You who can bring us back again; Antinoos Antinoos Hear me as the sun goes down Bringing to you my prayers Melting into the Nile Upon evening's gold-wings: Bring happiness To the one I love. Yes, Antinoos, You of the wine-stained lip, You of the warm thigh, You of the laughter full of life, glad: I ask thee, Gift unto my beloved A life crowned with wreaths A life with ever-full bowls A mouth always overflowing from kisses; For you know, More than anyone, How precious and how fragile Are life's gifts How easily a treasure can From even the strongest of hands, From arms used to bearing empires, Slip And forever lost be. Antinoos Antinoos Now the sun has gone asleep And I pour this, my song A libation unto your deep: Can you hear? My whisper voyaging Through time and life and death Through the spiral labyrinth Of that shell Still kissing your ear.
