Thoughts : A Face in the Crowd (1957)

There are stories that stand the test of time, no matter the era they are released in.  Elia Kazan’s instant classic A Face in the Crowd still hits the emotional manipulation bullseye 60 years after its initial release.  Some have even gone so far to say that the film predicted our current entertainment culture and our fascination with personality over substance that continues to grow over the years.

The film, based on a short story from the collection Faces in the Crowd, is the tale of ‘Lonesome’ Rhodes (Andy Griffith), a down on his luck good ol’ boy discovered in jail by radio personality Marcia Jeffries (Patricia Neal).  His infectious personality leads him to radio, TV, advertising and eventually political success, as well as plenty of scandals to cover up and dodge during his ascent up the ladder of success.  As Rhodes continues to burn bridges, the dominoes of downfall eventually form a line and tip themselves into action.

Griffith became an instant star in the wake of this film.  Though now a household name for the long-standing television show that bears his moniker, he was an unknown actor at the time that exploded off the screen with is down-home persona and iconic laugh.  Neal wonderfully plays the continual foil to this bigger than life personality, carrying a tension that winds tighter and tighter until eventually snapping in a beautifully satisfying series of events.  Walter Matthau plays the wise sage in the shadows, eventually leading the backlash charge of those wronged by Rhodes (and dropping some of the best lines in the film).  

What really makes this film stand out is its ability to hit the grassroots notes in true fashion.  From the salt of the earth dialogue written by Budd Schulberg to the insanely catchy music that Tom Glazer and Schulberg created for the film, the infectious nature of this film shines through and through.  Kazan pulls no punches in visualizing the film, bringing interesting angles, wonderfully composed shots and kinetic editing that propels the narrative forward like a plane crash.

Plain and simple, films like these are classic for a reason.  There has been talks over the years of remaking this film, with all kinds of A-list actors, directors and studios attached to it.  But, as it stands, over half a century has passed, and there has simply not been a need to remake this film, and its impact has not dwindled one bit.
