Probably no other world in the multiverse has warehouses for things which only exist in potentia, but the pork futures warehouse in Ankh-Morpork is a product of the Patrician’s rules about baseless metaphors, the literal-mindedness of citizens who assume that everything must exist somewhere, and the general thinness of the fabric of reality around Ankh, which is so thin that it’s as thin as a very thin thing. The net result is that trading in pork futures – in pork that doesn’t exist yet – led to the building of the warehouse to store it in until it does. The extremely low temperatures are caused by the imbalance in the temporal energy flow. At least, that’s what the wizards in the High Energy Magic building say. And they’ve got proper pointy hats and letters after their name, so they know what they’re talking about.

So I’m reading through the Watch Discworld books for the first time and I’ve only just started Night Watch.

Some misc. thoughts that occurred to me so far, in no particular order:

- Vimes being all shocked pikachu face about Vetinari employing spies in The Fifth Elephant is a lot less funny when you know about the unmentionables. That is his primary formative experience about spies. No wonder he doesn’t like them.

- We talk a lot about how the character of Vetinari wasn’t entirely settled yet in Guards! Guards!, especially the scene where he’s like « they’re laughing at me! I can tell! » which is a bit frazzled behaviour for this particular guy. But on the other hand, imagine being the only person who actually cares about the city and is trying to keep it together and functional. He must have been under a lot of stress until he realized he had Samuel « shut the fuck up sir I’m trying to arrest someone » Vimes and Carrot « do you know the origin of the word watchman? » Ironfundersson on his side, or at least sharing a similar goal.

- Speaking of Vetinari, I can’t help but wonder if he put Colon and Nobby in charge of traffic because he knew they’d fuck it up a little bit. Vimes, and by extension the watch, were now known to be extremely competent to the point where the Klatchian prince knew how to manipulate Vimes as part of his conspiracy plans. But if the very public facing and very memorable task of traffic control was taken over by a bunch of incompetents, then maybe people would think less of the watch, or at least their true capability would be obfuscated for a bit longer. It always pay for people to underestimate you…

The Guild of Fire Fighters had been outlawed by the Patrician the previous year after many complaints. The point was that, if you bought a contract from the Guild, your house would be protected against fire.

Unfortunately, the general Ankh-Morpork ethos quickly came to the fore and fire fighters would tend to go to prospective clients' houses in groups, making loud comments like 'Very inflammable looking place, this' and 'Probably go up like a firework with just one carelessly-dropped match, know what I mean?'

So, I’ve been looking for a real 18th century gowns these days and… it’s a total spice-killer. Awful, but, you know, Havelock never had a reason to search for some sassy-hot-stylish gown before relationships with Vimes. I bet he just chose the most simple one and used to wear it until the Feet of Clay times. And then there was an unexpected amount of people who saw his “no one is going to see me sleeping in this thing” gown in just three days. So he found it rational to buy a new one.

A new model that was kindly provided by the seamstress-guild shop🌚🌝

Oh and look at the young baby here. He NEEDS a long good nap

He won’t think it was a good idea if he had enough sleep! But you know, all that paperwork and ruling Ank-Morpork after Snapcase must be exhausting.
