A wonderful piece of ephemera from the days of early television! Super Circus aired from 1949 to 1956 and featured the young model Mary Hartline, Claude Kirchner, and a young Mike Wallace.

One of the sponsors of the program, Canada Dry, produced this mail away premium.

The illustrated mailer has directions on the verso and on the backs of certain sheets.

Condition: Near Fine. Some loose perforations, missing non-essential holes from wheels on sheets 6 & 8 otherwise complete and intact. Address label to mailer has been removed and there is some light soiling to mailer as shown in photos.

Remember these words when the present system collapses and leftists and establishment figures in general cry that capitalism, that laissez faire of all things, has failed, that it’s Trump’s fault or that a new economic paradigm is needed – you name it – and that more regulation and government control is the only solution, as it always is, when the drain of socialist planning on the market economy leads to a crisis, as it always does.

We are fast approaching what may be our last chance to reject not only more of the same but probably a level of state control terminal to the interests of freedom for humanity that now sits on a knife edge between further exponential progress thanks to technology or total enslavement at the hands of it.  

Ahead of time, the people need to learn a fundamental political truth (having been lied to about the nature of left and right) that a free market under capitalism – the separation of state and economics – could not be further along the spectrum from fascism – the system which now dominates Western civilization via the almost indistinguishable entanglement of big business and government.

Fascism – socialism principally on behalf of corporations – and communism – socialism ostensibly on behalf of workers – are two sides of the same collectivist coin. Capitalism is the individualist answer to both.

Thoughts : A Face in the Crowd (1957)

There are stories that stand the test of time, no matter the era they are released in.  Elia Kazan’s instant classic A Face in the Crowd still hits the emotional manipulation bullseye 60 years after its initial release.  Some have even gone so far to say that the film predicted our current entertainment culture and our fascination with personality over substance that continues to grow over the years.

The film, based on a short story from the collection Faces in the Crowd, is the tale of ‘Lonesome’ Rhodes (Andy Griffith), a down on his luck good ol’ boy discovered in jail by radio personality Marcia Jeffries (Patricia Neal).  His infectious personality leads him to radio, TV, advertising and eventually political success, as well as plenty of scandals to cover up and dodge during his ascent up the ladder of success.  As Rhodes continues to burn bridges, the dominoes of downfall eventually form a line and tip themselves into action.

Griffith became an instant star in the wake of this film.  Though now a household name for the long-standing television show that bears his moniker, he was an unknown actor at the time that exploded off the screen with is down-home persona and iconic laugh.  Neal wonderfully plays the continual foil to this bigger than life personality, carrying a tension that winds tighter and tighter until eventually snapping in a beautifully satisfying series of events.  Walter Matthau plays the wise sage in the shadows, eventually leading the backlash charge of those wronged by Rhodes (and dropping some of the best lines in the film).  

What really makes this film stand out is its ability to hit the grassroots notes in true fashion.  From the salt of the earth dialogue written by Budd Schulberg to the insanely catchy music that Tom Glazer and Schulberg created for the film, the infectious nature of this film shines through and through.  Kazan pulls no punches in visualizing the film, bringing interesting angles, wonderfully composed shots and kinetic editing that propels the narrative forward like a plane crash.

Plain and simple, films like these are classic for a reason.  There has been talks over the years of remaking this film, with all kinds of A-list actors, directors and studios attached to it.  But, as it stands, over half a century has passed, and there has simply not been a need to remake this film, and its impact has not dwindled one bit.
