A common sight in homes throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Australia the common house centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata) is a medium-sized species of centipede originally from the Mediterranean. In the wild, they prefer grasslands and deciduous forests where they can hide under rocks, logs, or leaf litter. These insects have also adapted well to urban development, and are frequently found in basements, bathrooms, and garages,  as well as gardens and compost piles.

Like other centipedes, the common house centipede has less than 100 legs; in fact, they only have 15 pairs, with the front pair used only for holding prey or fending off threats. All those legs let the common house centipede move up to 0.4 meters per second (1.3 ft/s) over a variety of surfaces, including walls and ceilings. The actual body of S. coleoptrata is only 25 to 35 mm (1.0 to 1.4 in) long, but the antennae are often as long as the body which can give this insect a much larger appearance. Though they pose little threat to humans, house centipedes are predatory. Their primary food source is other arthropods, including cockroaches, silverfish, bed bugs, ticks, ants, and insect larvae. S. coleoptrata is a nocturnal hunter, and uses its long antennae to track scents and tactile information. Their compound eyes, unusual for centipede species, can distinguish daylight and ultraviolet light but is generally used as a secondary sensory organ. When they do find prey, house centipedes inject a venom which can be lethal in smaller organisms, but is largely harmless to larger animals. This makes them important pest controllers. In the wild, house centipedes are the common prey of rodents, amphibians, birds, and other insects.

The mating season for S. coleoptrata begins in the spring, when males and females release pheromones that they can use to find each other. Once located, the male spins a silk pad in which he places his sperm for the female to collect. She then lays fertilized eggs in warm, moist soil in clutches of 60-150. These eggs incubate for about a month, and the young emerge with only four pairs of legs. Over the next three years, juvenile house centipedes molt 7 times, each time gaining new pairs of legs. After they grow their last pair of legs, immature house centipedes molt an additional 3 times, at which time they become sexually mature. If they can avoid predation, individuals can live up to 7 years in the wild.

Conservation status: The common house centipede has not been evaluated by the IUCN, as it is relatively common both in the wild and in urban areas. Although they have been introduced to areas outside their native range, no detrimental environmental effects have been associated with their spread.

For this ask, I think i'll just write how I imagine this scenario will turn out to be. You could say this is just a 'what ifs' since kaiju no. 9 and Kagami have no relations to each other. For the sake of the plot, Kagami will not be gravely injured after fighting with kaiju no.16 which I made on my previous post.

Okay so here we go!!! Be warned as it has spoilers from the manga⚠️⚠️⚠️

Kaiju no. 9, the numbered kaiju that suddenly appeared out of nowhere after kaiju no. 8. According to reports, it has the ability to disguise itself as a human and has the ability to control other kaijus as their leader. The perfect example of this was the attack on Tachikawa Base.

Uzui Kagami and Kaiju no.9 has no relation to each other whatsoever, rather it was Kagami who was onesidedly pissed off by the said kaiju. The attack number 9 launched on Tachikawa Base via Kaiju no.10 made her fiance injured, almost killing him woth the rest of the Third Division. There's no way she's forgiving that so easily. Number 10 was only let off cuz he was useful, if not she'd find way to torture that motherfucker.

She's only realized how great of a threat number 9 is when he outsmarted them all. Never did she expected a kaiju to be so smart it caused a diversion by using the annoying ant type kaijus just so it could sneak attack on the director general of the defense force. Kagami was frustrated, really really frustrated. She and Shinomiya Isao may not have the greatest relationship but she truly respects the man and grateful for him. Seeing him die when she could've saved him, she's filled with even more self-loathing and seething anger to that kaiju.

A trap, she knew it was a trap plotted by kaiju no. 9. The appearance of kaiju no. 11 to 16, six numbered kaijus at the same time was unprecedented and could only be done by it. She had an inkling on its motives but she wasn't sure if she's correct: to separate the JAKDF's strongest forces and eliminate them.

As she was fighting with kaiju no. 16, she wondered. Was she strong enough to be considered a threat by kaiju no.9? The talentless and unworthy her? Kagami always underestimates herself but never her enemies for that is what's been engraved to her entire being. For what purpose is kaiju no.9 doing this to her?

Ah, she understood now. She was too far from everyone. She was caught off guard by kaiju no. 16 and didn't realize it brought her away from other people. She was too exhausted after neutralizing number 16 when number 9 appeared. Its form intimidating, greatly different from the reports she's seen. There were no openings even if she does try to attack. But she knew she can't run. For it will go for the others if she did. Even if she managed, she knew she could never escape.

The only choice was to face it and try to stall it. Kagami wasn't an idiot. She knows full well what this kaiju did to director Shinomiya. She knew it absorbed his memories, using the information gained against them. She must never ever be be killed by this kaiju. Cuz if she dies by its hands, it'll find out the plan she and Soshiro formulated with Hibino Kafka.

"Why are you doing this? I don't think I am worth anything"

Stalling for time, she tried to understand its motives. Number 9 wasn't attacking but she kept her eyes and ears peeled. Attacking it first is a dumb move and she won't do it.

"Eto- Shinomiya Isao's memories says otherwise. Mahh it's good thing you're the type of underestimate yourself and your abilities. You'll be a pest if I leave you be right now so..."

A frown appeared on Kagami's face as her sharp eyes glared at the kaiju, readying her weapon. She doesn't know what this kaiju saw but it won't let her off. She'll die here and this bastard will absorb her memories, ruining everything. She tried to fight. She really did but she was far too weak right now. Her suit already exceeded its limits long ago forcing her to rely only on her strength and reflexes.

The feeling of being absorbed was weird. Her sense of touch was sensitive so the feeling so Kaiju no.9's flesh engulfing her entire body brought shivers down her spine. It was so disgusting and creepy she wanted to empty out her stomach. But not even that was something she could do as she's rendered immobile, her consciousness fading. On her last thoughts was apologies to her fiancee.

If Kagami were to experience a normal death, she would be happy to see memories of Soshiro in her last moments. But inside kaiju no.9, she's aware of the mental battle she's experiencing. It was repulsive to see the monsters in her head try to take the form of the person she loves. If there's one thing about her that is consistent, it's her stubbornness regarding Soshiro. She's already been through a lot, she'd never give in when it comes to Soshiro.

As she's experiencing a mental battle with kaiju no.9, light shines down on the cracks until it fully engulfed her. A familiar arm wrapped around her and instantly she knew she was safe.

"I'm sorry I'm late. I'm here now"

The familiar voice reverberates through her consciousness. Her body may not be responsive but her mind is.

"Let's go beat some kaiju ass, Hoshina!"

An obnoxious laughter could be heard as well. Its attitude to pick fights so obvious.

"Trust me I also wanna do it but this is not our fight. We have to get Kagami to safety first"

The last drop of consciousness in her was him running away at a fast speed. And the rumbling from another level 9 intensity that appeared from their previous spot. Everything else has now faded from the sense of relief.

Safe. She's safe now in his arms.

The memory is related to her relationship with Soshiro and Gen. If she dies, two of the strongest combatants will be rendered incapacitated with grief. Grief and anger hinders judgement thus will lead to their deaths. All hope will be lost (like its plan with Mina's death). She also has access to information of a lot of things that Isao doesn't have. What that is, I won't elaborate cuz I also don't know😂

Also if number 9 does successfully absorbs her, it will never be able to access information regarding Soshiro. Kagami's willpower is amazing when it comes to him. Cause the only thing that scares her is him leaving her.

The devil-worms actually get their names from their larval stage, the parasitoid larvae can live in a host unknown for several days, but eventually always drives the hosts to go “home”, where they then lay in the soil before the larvae eats their way through the (usually alive) host

Devilworm nests can be mistaken as cultural burial mounds by the uninformed, 

an asexually reproducing species that relies on living organisms as hosts

Most commonly seen as an omen of death, being plated in bones and extremely hostile

BIOLOGY: 

Larvae explained earlier

Born with no teeth and no bones, their own skeleton only growing after 3 weeks

Larvae have to be intentionally implanted, won’t infect if they’re just touched/if the larvae are harmed

Inflicts an amnesic like effect so the hosts can go back to normal life until the larvae take over

Targets small groups of 3 or 4, at least 10 larvae per host

Nocturnal, blown out pupils that eerily shine.

Weak by nature, they dig up objects they can use to protect themselves (usually bones due to their strength and low weight)

Are not born with teeth, they typically have to find a set they like (decorative purposes only, they don’t need them to eat)

The ‘worms’ are multipurpose, they are used to anchor armor/decor to their flesh, used to eat and for motor functions, and used to reproduce.

In desperate scenarios, they can control other organisms with the ‘worms’ similarly to a puppet, simply cutting the worm severs the connection, but it can be hard to spot if stretched thin. Includes living and dead organisms, not a method of reproduction.

CULTURAL (OUTSIDE):

The perspective on devilworms vary by culture, some believe becoming a host is the ultimate sacrifice, and a truly rightful and selfless way to die. Others see it as the ultimate punishment, a brutal way to go. But they’re also seen as pests, with some cultures preferring to cremate corpses to not allow any interaction.

Typically seen as brutes, even the most respectful see them as a necessary evil and not a being worth respect. Despite devilworms calm demeanor, they always match the energy of whatever is in their vicinity (which is usually fear or violence) the cycle of fuck around and find out repeats, and they get the reputation of pure evil

Mainly rumors spread from hunters trying to capture/kill them, but became a general understanding

On the contrary, those who sought infection out of a self-destructive nature actually found their company quite pleasant, the devilworms pampering them until their eventual death.

CULTURAL(INSIDE)

Devilworms are a calm, headstrong intelligent species that have strong family bonds. They’re found in tight knit packs inside large burial mounds

Theres 4 classes in their society, we’ve got the seekers, the mothers, the caregivers, and the misc

The Mothers are the ‘alphas’, the strongest, the most resilient of the bunch, they're the eldest/only ones to reproduce. While its physically possible for others to reproduce, its taboo/disrespectful in their culture

The Seekers search for any corpses left behind, and for new hosts, traveling with the mother as escorts/trackers.

The caregivers sole purpose in life is to care for newly hatched larvae, they rarely travel outside the nest.

The Misc tend to take on protective/labor roles, guarding perimeters, digging holes for incoming hosts, and gathering/farming food. (they grow mushroom colonies similarly to leafcutter ants)

TLDR:

Devilworms work like parasitic wasps, needing a live host to reproduce

Cleo is a younger devilworm who typically guards the perimeter of the nest, and she’s tired and bored of it. Everyone else seems to revel in the routine of existence but it’s not fulfilling for her, all her attempts of communication to the other species were a disaster, and the others scold her for even trying. 

Out on patrol, she comes across an almost ethereal being, nothing she’s ever seen before, and it was beautiful. It spotted her but didn't flinch, instead it spoke to her? It was just, the feeling of a greeting, she understood yet didn’t hear a sound. It was soon washed with the feeling of panic as it ran towards her. 

It begged for help and for forgiveness as Cleo saw 2 massive figures bounding over the horizon towards them. Cleo had no idea what this thing was, but it seemed too fragile and substance-less to be hunted down like this with such ferocity,

Further research has shown the Ailanthus moths I’ve given Damian have a lifespan maxing out ~75 days. Females will lay ~200 eggs, but I cannot find the viability percentage of those eggs (searching “hatching” with any word combination I can think of is only getting me cocoon hatching times.) However, google says the average egg-to-butterfly in general ratio is ~1-2 out of every 100.

It is worth keeping in mind that Jane Prentiss’s swarm was purely larval (she stuck her arm in a wasp nest, and her “worms” do match descriptions of wasp larvae.) But I want Dami to have moths too, so let’s say that lack of pupating is a Prentiss thing; John Amherst was described as having both flies & ants following him around, so clearly adult insects are possible, though whether they were his swarm or just creepy-crawlies that liked to be around him is vague as Amherst is more associated with disease than insects. (I personally believe his aspect is the dangerous grossness just barely out of sight; the disease that shows only hints before it kills someone, the house infested with vermin barely noticeable from the outside, that sort of thing.) (Amherst is even more protective of his little friends than Prentiss is, weirdly enough. She doesn’t seem to care if a few worms get squished, but if someone calls pest control to Amherst’s house? Oh, you better watch out…)

(Also worth noting: Corruption-influenced creatures often have atypical behaviors compared to their non-supernatural counterparts. Wasp larvae aren’t normally that aggressive, mosquitoes can’t work together to escape from captivity, etc. So anything I come up with that is just objectively wrong for Damian’s silk moths isn’t me, guys, it’s the Corruption! I swear.)

Anyway. I was doing this research to try to figure out how badly the Lazarus Pit would have influenced Damian’s swarm, and how long it would take for it to become obvious what he was. Let’s say all the adult moths & larvae were killed off by the Pit, and most of their tunnels healed, leaving only a small network in Damian’s chest where most of the eggs were (let’s say ~1000.) Assuming Talia shipped Damian straight to Gotham after saving him, the first larvae would hatch within a week of getting there. Damian would probably eat a lot more than most boys of his size & age, but would never seem to put on weight. He would also be tired and probably in a lot of pain as the larvae borrowed new tunnels throughout his body, though he’d definitely try to hide that. I don’t think the 1st generation of adults would be ready to leave his body, so those first ~4 months wouldn’t be terribly obvious (though that’s still ~10 moths with 5″ wingspans wriggling around inside him for about a week. Maybe a couple less, given the stress of the situation? Though, I’d imagine Corruption critters are probably a lot hardier than their normal counterparts, so maybe a couple more. That is still going to be unspeakably unpleasant.)

So it won’t be until the 2nd generation reached maturity that Damian would need to start worrying about people noticing what he was. I was going to have Bruce “die” at the 8 month mark after Damian moved in, but maybe it would be better to make it ~6 months, so that Damian has an excuse to hide just how sick he is.  Then Dick becomes Batman, Damian becomes Robin, and Tim goes off for the Red Robin arc. Scarecrow escapes, and Dick finds out what Damian is. Damian’s swarm is cut down again after he pukes up a lot of his caterpillars (and probably transplants them to a proper Ailanthus tree, since I doubt Dick would let Damian hurt himself just to put them back.) So Damian has another 3 generations before it becomes a serious problem (~7.5 months) which give Tim enough time to complete his arc, get back on good terms with Dick, and start to get along with Damian. At which point, Damian asks Tim to “lance the wound” so to speak, putting a single deep puncture for the swarm to enter & exit Damian’s body without hurting Damian even worse (which Dick would not understand the necessity of, possibly, given his own relationship with his patron is almost purely adversarial. And the Hunt requires much less personal sacrifice than the Corruption does.)

The wound does not bleed (at least not long,) because it is coated in silk like a second, internal skin. It will always ache, but is considerably less painful that the swarm building up inside of Damian or even vomiting them out. It will never heal, but unlike the wounds Damian had before the Pit (which largely served the same function,) it will never get infected as on every level possible, Damian’s become a much healthier person. (Scientifically, he no longer has to tend to his hurts alone, so they get better treatment. Socially, he has a much bigger support network. Psychologically, he no longer feels quite so self-conscious about his true nature, no longer having to hide or feel shame over himself or his swarm. Metaphysically, his relationship with the swarm itself is healthier, as he has found healthier ways of living with it than bottling it up or letting it nest in open wounds he received in training, and Damian is no longer so dependent on it for emotional fulfillment.)
