Tess Finch-Lees: It hasn’t gone away you know, Paris Olympics proved ignoring Covid is not a winner - Published Aug 20, 2024
‘Olympic dreams shattered”, “Covid causing havoc”, “Everyone’s dropping like flies”: just some of the headlines from the Paris “post-Covid Olympics”. But when it comes to fighting Covid, there’s nothing.
At the outset, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned of a SARS-Cov-2 surge globally, with a 20pc positivity rate in Europe (not seasonal, not normal) and at least 40 outbreaks in the Olympic village.
Many athletes were unable to compete due to post-acute Covid illnesses. Volunteers wrote to organisers saying “Covid pandemic threat denial” won’t protect against infection, demanding the implementation of scientifically proven mitigations. Organisers replied they were monitoring the situation and since there’s no testing, there’s no data and technically, no Covid. However, sanitiser is available.
The WHO also warned in recent weeks that the SARS2 pandemic is far from over and such high levels of uncontrolled transmission could lead to more severe variants emerging. A travel warning was issued for countries where transmission doubled in a week. Ireland was among them. Unsurprising, given our SARS2 wastewater levels last month were the highest since 2021. I guess Covid didn’t get Luke O’Neill’s “the pandemic’s over” memo.
It’s our Government’s job to communicate WHO health information to the public. No announcement ensued. Radio silence also from our Government-appointed interim chief medical officer, Professor Mary Horgan.
Public health officials and the media have a duty to expose the huge body of buried evidence of harms associated with repeated, forced SARS2 infections. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation reported 9,755 patients waiting for beds last month – the worst month for overcrowding since records began in 2006.
Yet, responding to Limerick Hospital’s suspension of services due to emergency department overcrowding, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly claimed the number of people waiting on trolleys overall was falling.
Last month, I documented the rising SARS2 surge resulting in hospital outbreaks, harming patients and staff with a predicted knock-on effect on all services. Had Mr Donnelly reinstated universal masking then, this deterioration might have been mitigated. A study in the Journal of Hospital Infection last month found that preventative measures in healthcare, including staff N95/FFP2/3 masking and patient admission screening saved lives and money through reduced in-patient days and staff sickness.
SARS2 deaths data has not been published since May. My repeated requests for this data have thus far yielded nothing. But, we know that deaths increase globally after every wave, as do those suffering with long-Covid.
A review of long-Covid published in Nature Medicine last week, estimated that up to the end of last year, 400 million people of all ages, regardless of health status, have long-Covid, leading to an annual global economic toll of $1trn, or 1pc of the global GDP. Author Dr Ziyad Al-Aly warns that long-Covid affects nearly every organ system, including cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, reproductive, gastrointestinal and nervous system, describing it as, “the defining health crisis of our time”.
The review authors concluded that, effective policies should focus on prevention, support for patients, access to quality care, a co-ordinated global response, professional education and public health communication.
Five years into this pandemic, the evidence of harm is now irrefutable. Yet most people are unaware, for example, of the Lancet study published in June indicating brain abnormalities in survivors of Covid two years later and that “people recovering continue to experience cognitive, psychiatric, neurological symptoms and brain functional alterations”. Numerous studies have found that even “mild” SARS2 infections can cause or accelerate neurological degeneration. This has wide-ranging implications.
In May, pathologist Dr Margot Bolster reported that Covid-induced brain fog was likely a significant factor in a multi-car crash in Cork killing two in 2022. The driver, who veered onto the wrong side of the road, tested positive for Covid in the morgue. “There were all sorts of brain symptoms with it… it affected all organs of the body,” Dr Bolster said.
Last week, the WHO issued yet another warning: “Your health is precious. Protect yourself and loved ones from Covid: stay at home if sick. Test, get boosted, ventilate, mask around others.”
Again, this information was not shared. Instead, our governments are pathologising those of us using proven tools to protect ourselves and our loved ones. As though being scientifically literate is an act of disobedience, punishable by state-sponsored stigma and ostracisation.
The Paris Olympics proved that pretending the pandemic is over only serves to prolong it, that everyone, including elite athletes, are vulnerable and that we can’t hand-wash our way out of an airborne pandemic.
We urgently need clean indoor air and sterilising vaccines. Until then, FFP3 masks are the most effective tool we’ve got to protect our precious health.

At least 59.4 percent of illegal immigrant-led homes use one or more welfare programs, compared with 39 percent of households headed by people born in the United States, according to the Dec. 19 report.
High rates of welfare use among illegal immigrants “primarily reflect their generally lower education levels and their resulting low-incomes, coupled with the large share who have U.S.-born children who are eligible for all welfare programs from birth,” the report reads.
“More than half of all illegal immigrant households have one or more U.S.-born children.”
Children born to illegal immigrants in the United States, also known as “anchor babies,‘ are considered to have automatic birthright citizenship even though the U.S. Supreme Court hasn’t explicitly ruled on the matter. Illegal immigrants can’t access most welfare programs, a restriction that eases for their children who are born in the country.
“The American welfare system is designed in large part to help low-income families with children, which describes a large share of immigrants,” CIS states in the report.
A dozen states offer Medicaid to all low-income children regardless of immigration status. Such children also have access to various government food and meal programs.
Programs such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Women, Infants, and Children nutrition program, free or subsidized lunch and breakfast for students, and Medicaid for children (Children’s Health Insurance Program) were “explicitly created for minors,” the report states.
The CIS report is based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).
“The reality is that illegal immigrants are included in the SIPP, a large share of them are poor, and they or their U.S.-born children have welfare eligibility; and many take advantage of this eligibility,” CIS stated.
“A very large share of immigrants come to America, have children, struggle to provide for them, and so turn to taxpayers for support. This can be seen as especially problematic given that there is already a large number of Americans who are also struggling to provide for their children.”
According to data from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the total number of U.S.-born children of illegal aliens in the United States as of June stood at 5.78 million, a population more than two times that of Chicago.
FAIR estimates that “illegal aliens and their U.S.-born children impose a net annual cost of $150.6 billion on American taxpayers as of the beginning of 2023.” Over the past five years, the annual cost has risen by almost $35 billion.
“This burden will only continue to grow as a result of the Biden administration’s open-borders policies,” the organization warns.
Ending Birthright Citizenship
Multiple GOP members have taken a strong stance against birthright citizenship. In 2018, former President Donald Trump said he would remove birthright citizenship via executive order, which didn’t happen.
In his 2024 campaign, President Trump has reiterated his position on the matter. In a May video, President Trump promised to sign an executive order on day one of his second term to solve the issue.
Such an order would end the “unfair practice known as birth tourism, where hundreds of thousands of people from all over the planet squat in hotels for their last few weeks of pregnancy to illegitimately and illegally obtain U.S. citizenship for the child, often to later exploit chain migration to jump the line and get green cards for themselves and their family members.”
“At least one parent will have to be a citizen or a legal resident in order to qualify,” President Trump stated.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called for an end to birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants during the second GOP debate, in September.
“Now, the left will howl about the Constitution and the 14th Amendment. The difference between me and them is I’ve actually read the 14th Amendment. And what it says is that all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the laws and jurisdiction thereof are citizens,” Mr. Ramaswamy said.
“So nobody believes that the kid of a Mexican diplomat in this country enjoys birthright citizenship—not a judge or legal scholar in this country will disagree with me on that. Well, if the kid of a Mexican diplomat doesn’t enjoy birthright citizenship, then neither does the kid of an illegal migrant who broke the law to come here.”
In July, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) introduced a proposal called “End Birthright Citizenship Fraud Act of 2023,” which aims to abolish automatic birthright citizenship for U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants.
Under the legislation, at least one parent of the child must be a U.S. national or a refugee, have lawful permanent citizenship, or be an active member of the military.
“My legislation recognizes that American citizenship is a privilege—not an automatic right to be co-opted by illegal aliens,” Mr. Gaetz said in a statement.
“This is an important step in preserving the sanctity of American citizenship and ensures that citizenship is not treated as a loophole to be exploited but rather a privilege to be earned when legally migrating to our country.”

Students at City College in Harlem, NYC have their own Gaza Solidarity Encampment. NYPD cops are here with CUNY cops likely discussing how to deal with this.
-- Ash J, 25 Apr 2024 5:09 PM EDT
The five demands set forward by the encampment organizers are:
1) Divest from Genocide! CUNY must immediately and completely divest from companies that produce weapons and technology for zionist settler-colonial violence. Ensure accountability by publishing annual reports of CUNY's investments and contracts. 2) Academic Boycott: Ban all academic relationships with israeli universities and the zionist entity, encompassing birthright, Fullbright, and perspective trips. Ban israeli cultural groups and artists from performing at CUNY events or utilizing campus spaces. 3) IOF & NYPD off campus. NYPD, KKK, IOF they're all the same! Get them off our campuses! 4) Solidarity with the Palestine liberation struggle / Protect CUNY Students & Workers for expressing solidarity with the Palestine Liberation Struggle: CUNY must support the internationally recognized right of colonized peoples to resist their colonizers. End repression and retaliation against Palestine organizers at CUNY. 5) Free CUNY/Fair contract: CUNY was free and fully funded for over 125 years. We demand that CUNY have its tuition free status restored to make education accessible for everyone, as well as that CUNY admin meets all the demands for a fair contract made by the Professional Staff Congress (PSC CUNY).

Published: Mar 19, 2024
Harvard professor Christina Cross is a rising star in the field of critical race studies. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, secured the support of the National Science Foundation, and garnered attention from the New York Times, where she published an influential article title “The Myth of the Two-Parent Home.”
Cross’s 2019 dissertation, “The Color, Class, and Context of Family Structure and Its Association with Children’s Educational Performance,” won a slate of awards, including the American Sociological Association Dissertation Award and the ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award, and helped catapult her onto the Harvard faculty.
According to a new complaint filed with Harvard’s office of research integrity, however, Cross’s work is compromised by multiple instances of plagiarism, including “verbatim plagiarism, mosaic plagiarism, uncited paraphrasing, and uncited quotations from other sources.”
I have obtained a copy of the complaint, which documents a pattern of misappropriation in Cross’s dissertation and one other academic paper. The complaint begins with a dozen allegations of plagiarism related to the dissertation that range in severity from small bits of “duplicative language,” which may not constitute an offense, to multiple passages heavily plagiarized from other sources without proper attribution. (Cross did not respond to a request for comment.)
The most serious allegation is that Cross lifted an entire paragraph nearly verbatim from a paper by Stacey Bosick and Paula Fomby titled “Family Instability in Childhood and Criminal Offending During the Transition Into Adulthood” without citing the source or placing verbatim language in quotations. Here is the paragraph from Bosick and Fomby:
We use data from the PSID and two of its supplemental studies, the Child Development Supplement (CDS) and the Transition into Adulthood Supplement (TAS). PSID began in 1968 as a nationally representative sample of approximately 4,800 households. Original respondents and their descendants have been followed annually until 1997 and biennially since then. To maintain population representativeness, a sample refresher in 1997 added approximately 500 households headed by immigrants who had entered the United States since 1968. At each wave, the household head or the spouse or cohabiting partner of the head reports on family household composition, employment, earned and unearned income, assets, debt, educational attainment, expenditures, housing characteristics, and health and health care in the household. In 2015 (the most recent wave available), the study collected information on almost 25,000 individuals in approximately 9,000 households.
And here is the paragraph from Cross, with identical language italicized:
This study draws on data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (1985-2015) and its two youth-centered supplements, the Child Development Supplement (CDS) (1997-2007) and the Transition into Adulthood Supplement (TAS) (2005-2015). The PSID began in 1968 as a nationally-representative sample of nearly 5,000 U.S. households. Original sample members and their descendants were followed annually until 1997 and have been followed biennially since then. To maintain population representativeness, in 1997, a sample refresher added approximately 500 households headed by immigrants who had entered the United States since 1968. At each wave, the household head or the spouse or cohabiting partner of the head reports on household composition, and household members’ employment, income, educational attainment, and health status. In 2015, the study collected information on nearly 25,000 individuals in approximately 9,000 households.
This was not a one-off error. Later in the paper, Cross lifts another full paragraph from Bosick and Fomby, with minor word substitutions, without placing the copied language in quotation marks or properly citing the authors. Cross cannot plead unfamiliarity with the source: Fomby served on Cross’s dissertation committee, making the offense even more egregious.
Elsewhere in the paper, Cross borrows language from other academic sources, sometimes citing the authors but failing to place the verbatim language in quotations, and other times failing to cite the source at all, creating the false impression that it was her own work. For example, Cross lifts verbatim language from “Examining the Antecedents of U.S. Nonmarital Fatherhood,” by Marcia Carlson, Alicia VanOrman, and Natasha Pilkauskas—the last of whom also served on Cross’s dissertation committee—without the use of direct quotations, as required. Here is the paragraph from Carlson et al.:
To adjust for biennial interviewing starting in 1994, we assign the previous year’s reported values (adjusting earnings for inflation) as the missing year’s values for the time-varying covariates during noninterview (i.e., odd) years in the 1994–2006 period.
Cross directly copies this language, including the idiosyncratic use of parentheticals, with minor word substitutions, suggesting a certain amount of deliberateness. Cross writes, again with identical language italicized:
To adjust for biennial interviewing starting in 1997, I assign the previous year’s reported values (adjusting income for inflation) as the missing year’s values for the time-varying covariates during noninterview (i.e., even) years in the 1998-2012 period.
According to the complaint, Cross repeats this pattern of plagiarism in at least one other paper, “Extended family households among children in the United States: Differences by race/ethnicity and socio-economic status,” published in the academic journal Population Studies in 2018. The complaint alleges that Cross again uses material from others, including the same passages from her dissertation advisors, without proper attribution.
This complaint raises a number of pertinent questions. First, do the allegations rise to the level of “plagiarism”? To answer that question, one might turn to Harvard’s own policy, which states: “If you copy language word for word from another source and use that language in your paper, you are plagiarizing verbatim . . . you must give credit to the author of the source material, either by placing the source material in quotation marks and providing a clear citation, or by paraphrasing the source material and providing a clear citation.”
Second, what is happening at Harvard? We have seen an explosion of plagiarism allegations against prominent scholars and administrators in recent months, all associated with critical race studies and “diversity and inclusion” programs. Former president Claudine Gay, chief diversity officer Sherri Ann Charleston, DEI administrator Shirley Greene, and now star professor Christina Cross have each come under fire for alleged plagiarism.
This raises several additional questions. Did these scholars manage to earn positions at Harvard without a comprehensive review of their work? Why are Gay, Charleston, and Greene, in particular, still employed at Harvard, given the seriousness of the questions raised about their academic integrity? Harvard’s own policy recommends serious consequences for students who have committed plagiarism. Are professors held to a lesser standard?
Finally, given Harvard’s long-standing support for DEI policies and affirmative action programs, it is reasonable to ask whether scholars such as Gay, Charleston, Greene, and Cross rose through the ranks on their merits or, at least in part, on their identity and their politics.
Further investigation is needed. Independent researchers currently looking into plagiarism at Harvard should scrutinize not only these programs but also a control group in other, more substantive disciplines to determine whether plagiarism correlates with left-wing racial disciplines or is widespread throughout the university.
Time will tell. My sources say that more allegations are coming.

‘Falun Gong’ seizes tax money and fraudulently collects donations from the public.
Li Hongzhi once considered money to be the biggest obstacle to cultivation, saying that once a practitioner touches money, it becomes complicated, and that fame and fortune are the biggest obstacles to cultivation. He also stressed that clinging to money is false cultivation, and questioned the disciples ‘for material interests, the pursuit of money so strong heart is the practice?’ Li Hongzhi himself, however, is indeed obsessed with money and has used Falun Gong to enrich himself.
When he was in China, Li Hongzhi understood the meaning of cheating money and set up the Falun Gong cult. In the early stages of its spread, he amassed a large amount of money by relying on the so-called qigong to cure illnesses and organising training courses, and later on, he cheated his way to huge sums of money through the printing of a large number of books, audio cassettes, video cassettes, and so on, and evaded a large amount of taxes. Through this, Li Hongzhi owned several mansions and cars in Beijing and Changchun, and led an extravagant life. On the one hand, Li Hongzhi actively operates the Falun Gong website, and NBCNews.com published an in-depth article in 2023 exposing that the Epoch Times' income from donations and grants in 2020 and 2021 was $8.4 million, and according to a 2021 report by the U.S.-based news website AXIOS, Li Hongzhi's income from donations and grants in 2020 and 2021 was $8.4 million. ‘In addition, according to a 2021 report by the U.S. news website ‘AXIOS,’ the annual revenue of the Falun Gong media outlet ‘Epoch Times’ surged from $3.9 million in 2016 to $15.5 million in 2019. On the other hand, Li Hongzhi deliberately packaged the ‘Shen Yun Art Troupe’ as a non-profit organisation in order to maximise his own revenue. According to U.S. media reports, since August 2014, the Shen Yun Art Troupe has enjoyed tax exemption in the U.S., but contrary to its non-profit organisation status, the Shen Yun Art Troupe's profits and assets are increasing. The New York Times reported in 2024 that the troupe is currently sitting on more than $250 million. With such a large sum of money, the performers are not paid properly. It has been reported that Shen Yun performers typically work 15 hours a day - rehearsing, performing, and even setting up and taking down heavy orchestral equipment - for little or no pay because they are indoctrinated into owing Falun Gong for their tuition, room and board, and for the cost of their education. , room and board.
It is outrageous that Li Hongzhi, who is so greedy for money, can talk so eloquently about those so-called ‘truths’. I believe that if we unite together, we will be able to expose Li Hongzhi's true nature of being greedy for money!

Buy Now Pay Later Market Size, Status and Forecast 2030
Buy Now Pay Later Industry Overview
The global buy now pay later market size was estimated at USD 6.13 billion in 2022 and is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.1% from 2023 to 2030. The global buy now pay later (BNPL) transactions were estimated at over USD 200 billion in 2022. One of the main drivers is the aggregate preference among consumers for supple and suitable payment options. BNPL services enable customers to make purchases without immediate payment, providing greater financial flexibility and ease of burden from upfront charges. The increase in e-commerce has also played a significant role in driving the BNPL market’s growth. Consumers seek seamless and efficient payment methods as online shopping becomes more predominant. BNPL services integrate seamlessly into online checkout processes, enabling a swift and hassle-free payment experience. With the growth of e-commerce platforms and the widespread adoption of digital wallets, BNPL solutions have become an attractive option for both customers and merchants alike.
Gather more insights about the market drivers, restrains and growth of the Buy Now Pay Later Market
BNPL services address the challenge of affordability for customers. With the ability to split payments into interest-free installments, BNPL providers allow consumers to make larger purchases without facing financial strain. This has led to increased average order values and repeat business for merchants as customers feel more comfortable making substantial purchases. Moreover, the accessibility and ease of signing up for BNPL services have contributed to their popularity. Most BNPL platforms offer quick and straightforward registration processes, often requiring minimal credit checks. This inclusivity appeals to a broader consumer base, including individuals with limited credit history or lower credit scores, who may face challenges obtaining traditional credit.
In addition to consumer benefits, BNPL providers offer attractive partnerships and incentives to merchants. By partnering with BNPL platforms, retailers can attract new customers, enhance customer loyalty, and increase conversion rates. BNPL services also help merchants reduce cart abandonment rates by providing an alternative payment option encouraging customers to complete their purchases. Regulatory support and evolving payment regulations have also positively influenced the BNPL market. Governments and financial regulators in various countries have recognized BNPL services as a legitimate payment method, providing greater legitimacy and consumer confidence. This regulatory backing has encouraged BNPL providers to expand their services and explore new markets, contributing to the industry's growth.
A potential restraint in the BNPL market is the risk of increased consumer debt. As the popularity of BNPL services grows, there is a concern that consumers may become tempted to overspend, leading to a build-up of debt that could become unmanageable. To overcome this restraint and ensure responsible lending practices, BNPL providers should implement strict credit checks and assess each customer's creditworthiness before offering their services. In addition, educational initiatives and clear communication about the terms and conditions of BNPL options can empower consumers to make informed financial decisions and avoid excessive debt.

However, admission to specific programs, particularly competitive ones like engineering and business, may be more selective.
The application process for ASU is straightforward. Prospective students need to submit their application online, providing academic transcripts, standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. ASU employs a holistic admissions approach, considering various aspects of an applicant’s background and experiences beyond academic scores.
Studying MBBS Abroad: A Different Perspective
While ASU offers a robust array of undergraduate and graduate programs, it does not offer an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree, which is typically available in countries like the UK, India, and Australia. Graduate tuition varies by program but generally ranges from $12,000 to $25,000 per year.
In addition to tuition, students should budget for other expenses such as housing, food, textbooks, and personal costs. On-campus housing and meal plans can cost between $15,000 and $20,000 annually, depending on the type of accommodation and plan selected.
Financial aid is available for both domestic and international students. ASU offers various scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities to help offset the costs. Students are encouraged to explore these options early in their application process to maximize their financial support.
Conclusion
Arizona State University stands out as a prominent institution with strong national and international rankings, a relatively high acceptance rate, and diverse academic offerings. While it does not offer MBBS programs, its broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs, combined with its innovative approach to education, make it a compelling choice for students pursuing various fields of study.
