i can't read remus lupin as anything other than the most gentle soul, and im not trying to make him 'boring' by doing this but he just,,,isn't mean. he isn't a pushover or naive, but he will never raise his voice unless he has to, he's never aggressive or nasty or bitchy, he probably covers his ears when other people are gossiping. he's a gentle giant that walks around with a cane and a knee brace on his worst days and the sweetest smile on his best, he loves listening to music and playing video games and reading and writing and he LOVES learning even if he isn't the best at paying attention and has to take countless notes. he's the most loyal friend, he loves buying people gifts and is so shocked when he gets a gift in return, he remembers every little thing about sirius and uses it for birthdays and anniversaries, he likes tidying his flat and humming songs to himself, he likes taking the bus, he likes serving elderly customers at his cafe and helping kids carry over their cakes and drinks, he carries change for the homeless, he will always offer to walk someone home, he gets giggly and sleepy when he's drunk, he's so attentive during sex he will always want to do better and he's addicted to making sirius feel good, he's an AMAZING kisser to the point that everyone is jealous of sirius tbh, he wears too big jumpers and folds the sleeves up because otherwise they get in the way, he loves coffee and hot chocolate and baking the recipes his mum showed him, he visits his parents every sunday for a roast dinner and always brings over flowers for them to put on the table, remus lupin is an angel.

Luv youu <3
Miles Morales, Miguel O’Hara, Hobie Brown
Relationship Headcanons
Tumblr media
How about some relationship headcanons for all of them?
Miles Morales
He’s so sweet when you guys are dating. He doesn’t have much to any experience when it comes to dating, so he’s kinda basing it all off of media he’s watched or read, and from what he’s seen between his parents.
He brings you cheesy gifts on your anniversary, like flowers or those really big teddy bears that’s holding a big plush heart. Hed also go out of his way to get your favorite cake or dessert, and if you don’t like sweets, hed get you something else.
He loves kissing, Miles would do that thing where he lifts one of his legs when you kiss, like in the cartoons. The best way to distract him is to kiss his cheeks or lean over and kiss him on the lips. It always makes him lose his train of thought, and makes him cover his face and giggle.
Miles loves holding your hand, you two can always be caught holding hands in one way. Be it by intertwining your fingers, or just locking pinkies when you walk. Its one of the best ways to help ground Miles when he’s stressed, since just feeling you hold his hand helps him focus on something other than stress.
His parents love you, since you are nice and respectful, and never refer to them by their first names, and you make Miles so happy. They’ve seen how mushy Miles gets, and he almost has hearts above his head when he talks about you, so they’re happy that he’s happy.
Miguel O’Hara
Miguel is a little more subtle and quiet about his love for you. He’s a pretty jaded guy, and has a deep fear of losing you. So, when you guys start dating, he might be kinda standoffish or scared of getting close to you, since he fears he would love you too much or somehow scare you away.
Shows his love in quieter ways, like bringing you your favorite drink or letting you lean against his shoulder when you are tired. It would take a while before he would cuddle you back or kiss you on the lips, but Miguel would always kiss you on the forehead or the top of your head.
Is a little insecure about his fangs or claws, since they come right out of the bottom of his fingers and don’t act like normal claws. When he sees you don’t mind though, it helps lighten the insecurity a bit and after a while hed grow comfortable, and would stop hiding them.
When he feels completely safe and secure in your guy’s relationship, you see a whole new side of him. He’s such a secret cuddlebug its insane. Look at him and tell me he isn’t touch starved. And now that he has you, there will be no way for you to escape his strong arms. Don’t get it mixed up though, he’s the little spoon and cuddled against your chest, not you against his.
He always kisses you like you mean the world and the stars to him, like its gonna be your last. This is because a small part of his brain is still constantly scared he will lose you, or that he’s gonna die on missions. Because of these fears he might need some hugs and kisses after missions.
Hobie Brown
Hobie is an easygoing guy, so he wouldn’t make the biggest thing out of you two dating. So, if you are one for big displays of affection of devotion, he wouldn’t be your guy. He likes to keep his love more subtle and on the quiet side, just for you two and no one else.
Would still bring you small gifts, like his guitar picks or a cool shirt or jacket he made for you. He loves when you wear his clothes and will wear yours too if possible. The moment you agreed to date him you pretty much signed up for him raiding your closet for anything he likes. And he probably looks better wearing it than you ever did too.
Isn’t a mushy guy, but still likes to cuddle as much as the next guy. Doesn’t care about being big or little spoon, just wants to get close to you, especially after a long and stressful day, or if you’ve ever gotten hurt in one way or another. Because dating Hobie would probably end up with you getting hurt every now and then, but dating Hobie also means you know how to defend yourself too.
Hobie is the kind of guy to start wearing a chain with a lock on it when you two get serious, it’s the most visible he is with his love for you. He’s also extremely loyal, no one could even catch a smidge of his attention with you around, so you would never have to worry about him cheating.
Writes songs for you and about you, they can get a little cringy sometimes, but you love them anyways. He would also just make up songs on the spot when you guys are doing stuff. Like about how much he loves your hair, or your outfit, or how you smell good today.

i dedicate this to those who are raising children—we appreciate you. some of us (children) may be too afraid/shy/embarrassed to say this… but i’ll say it on behalf of them. from the bottom of my heart, thank you for all your effort, support, love, and sacrifices.
*i’ve included some easter eggs! ^^
(it was my birthday 2 days ago so i was motivated to give you a gift in the form of this story hehe~ happy reading! ٩( ᐛ )و*)
p.s. please pardon any grammatical error.

after spending the evening at a restaurant downtown, you and your husband, mingyu, walk hand-in-hand into your dimly lit house.
“huh… i guess the kids must be in their rooms right now.” you said to your husband.
all of a sudden you both hear muffled sounds in your guys’ living room.
you and mingyu exchanged knowing looks at each other. “let’s not make them wait any longer, hon. let’s go.” mingyu whispered to you.
chuckling quietly, you nodded in agreement. “let’s go, my dear lord mingyu.”
he cheekily smiled, “right after you, lady (y/n).”
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
“shhh! be quiet--i hear them!”
“hurry up, aji!”
“okay... in 3-2-1—!”
“SURPRISE!!!”
both you and mingyu feigned shock and surprise.
your three kids stood in the middle of the living room beaming with joy, feeling satisfied with their surprise celebration. ,. one was holding a cake, another was holding a handmade banner, with ‘you’re the best mom and dad ever!’ written on it, and the other one setting off a confetti wand.
“HAPPY 25TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MOM AND DAD!!!”
you cooed at the sweet gesture from your kids.
“aww! thank you, my babies. your dad and i appreciate your efforts.”
mingyu initiated a family group hug. “thank you kids.”
giggling, all three of your kids said in unison, “you’re welcome mom and dad!”
you gave mingyu a side hug after everyone dispersed themselves. the two of you held a warm gaze into each other’s eyes. a sweet and loving smile never leaving both of your faces.
“happy anniversary again, love~”
“happy anniversary again, hon~”
you exchanged kisses.
both of you chuckled at the déjà vu of it all.
but you and mingyu don’t mind celebrating your wedding anniversary again because this time it’s with your whole family.
it was, indeed, a mirthful celebration.
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
“goodnight, gyu.”
“goodnight, (y/n).”
as you lay in your shared bedroom, you begin to reminisce about the beginnings of you and mingyu’s relationship. you softly smiled as you slowly slipped into your dreams.
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
“mom… (y/n) and i are going to be parents. (y/n)’s pregnant.”
you were both not ready to be parents. you were 23 and mingyu was 20.
you were in your last year of college, while he was in his second year.
you both were filled with limitless opportunities, but in the eyes of both your parents... it was a different story.
“KIM. MINGYU. HOW COULD YOU DO THIS??!”
mingyu’s mother was a religious woman, a devout believer of god, and an avid churchgoer.
born and raised in the countryside where everyone knew each other, both you and mingyu knew that you were going to be the talk of the town for… a while.
(with hindsight, it was only years later that you realized how your mother-in-law took the brunt of most of the gossip.)
although mingyu’s mother was strongly opposed to the pregnancy at first, she knew she could do nothing to change the fact that you were pregnant. you were relieved that she wasn’t like those cruel stepmothers portrayed in disney movies—definitely, not. she eventually warmed up to the situation at hand and guided the both of you during your pregnancy.
you and mingyu were set to be married a month before your first child's due date. yes, it was an outdated belief that both your families held back in the day, but it was what was considered acceptable at that time. you married early because of the pregnancy, but you had already decided long before you got pregnant that he was the one. mingyu was the one that's meant to be standing beside you at the altar and the one that you were going to grow old with.
the moment that truly changed mingyu’s mother’s heart was when aji was born. the moment she first laid eyes on your first born baby girl, her eyes were filled with love.
(she later told you that it was as if she was a first-time mother again.)
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
to say that raising a child was hard would be a huge understatement.
you were blessed with three children.
the first born, aji, was the hardest to take care of because you both didn’t know what you were supposed to do. (both of your parents were there to guide you for the most part, but the rest of the work had to come from you and mingyu.) with aji, the both of you were overly protective.
the second child, chi, was less hard to take care of because now both of you had experience but it wasn’t easy. learning from all the mistakes and lessons from your first child, you and mingyu applied all the knowledge you had with chi, and for the most part all of your tactics worked. chi was a very sickly baby when she was born, and so you and your husband worked tirelessly to provide all the necessary medication that your baby needed. with chi, the both of you were protective.
the youngest, bo, was easier to take care of because you both learned valuable things from the last two. however… the skills and tricks you had learned from raising aji and chi wasn’t really working well with bo because… he was the only boy. so it was like being back to square one again. with bo, the both of you learned to be a little bit carefree.
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
your husband was a man of many admirable qualities.
kim mingyu had a strong work ethic.
in the beginning of your guys’ marriage, he would work odd jobs, anything that would pay him. anything that would sustain your growing family.
when you were pregnant with your youngest, it was an unexpected pregnancy (it was déjà vu). you noticed the signs of pregnancy early and confirmed it with a test kit.
mingyu had a plan, you were skeptical at first but you eventually caved in. he would apply to work abroad and get a permanent residency. the work and money in your guys’ small town did not pay enough for a family of five, so mingyu looked for work outside of your country since they pay much more.
fortunately, he was there when you gave birth to bo and when he took his first steps.
it was only when bo was about two years old that mingyu left to go abroad.
you had worked on a video call schedule with him so that you and the children would have communication with him. he’d send a few pictures and videos of his life abroad… but it didn’t fill the feeling of longingness for him in your heart. you missed him so much.
raising all three of your children without your husband by your side took a toll on your mental and physical wellbeing. the first year without mingyu was the hardest for you, but you eventually got back on your feet thanks to the support you had from your friends, and his and your family. you knew you had to be strong not only for your husband and children, but also for yourself.
and you maintained your unwavering commitment to being a great mother to your children in the five years that mingyu was gone.
it was only until bo was seven years old that he met his father again. aji was about 15, and chi was 9 years old.
his five years abroad was the longest you two have ever been apart, but it proved to be an incredible testament to the lengths you both would endure just to provide your children with a comfortable life. a life that used to only exist in the movies and dramas that you two would watch before but has now been made possible because of the hard work and sacrifices you and mingyu made.
*
kim mingyu was chivalrous.
it was the simplest gesture of his that you would take notice of: he would hold open doors for you and your children. it was an automatic response from him–you didn’t need to ask him to–he just simply did it. as a father, his gentlemanly actions set the standards and expectations of your children. they especially influence the actions of your youngest son, bo.
mingyu was someone that’s attentive to the needs of others. an altruistic person.
he’d say to your children, “if you can help, then help.”
your husband isn’t an overly kind person. he knows his boundaries… sometimes. in your viewpoint, at times, he gets a bit into helping others to the point that he fails to recognize that they were only using him for their own selfish reasons. you were his voice of reason and helped him put a limit to his kindness.
*
kim mingyu was a homemaker.
from cooking, driving the kids, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning dishes, folding clothes, mowing, cutting and dyeing the kids’ hair (and your hair)—mingyu was an absolute all rounder around the house. but it’s not like you don’t do your fair share of house chores–you do. the two of you alternate chores every week. it’s a routinized system that the two of you made.
*
your relationship with your husband isn’t at all perfect, but you know you’re both going to get through it together. in times where you don’t see eye to eye, or say things in the heat of the moment… both of you will silently apologize through actions.
it’s not like you both can’t verbally apologize to one another… it’s just that the both of you are not used to expressing your emotions. you two didn’t grow up in an environment where emotions were talked about.
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
once, mingyu shared a personal story with you.
it was about his father.
he shared how he was distant with his father. mingyu, as a child, hated the way his father would always leave and make his mother cry. his mother always hid away in the bathroom or their "shared" bedroom to shed her tears, away from mingyu, but he heard them. he heard her painful cries every single night. there was never a day where his mother didn't cry herself to sleep.
his father was someone who couldn’t keep his zipper up—a cheater.
his father was what made kim mingyu the man that he is now.
he hated his father. he didn't want to be like him when he grew up. so he made a silent promise to himself that he would never treat the woman that he loved and married like how his father did to his mother.
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
the past 25 years of your married life and family life had its ups and downs, of course no relationships are ever picture-perfect, but you try to embrace each other's shortcomings.
after 25 years of being married, you can proudly say that 23 year old you and 20 year old mingyu would be glad to see 48 year old you and 45 year old mingyu still standing strong together. that no matter what life has thrown your way, you've both gotten through those battles  and came out victorious at the end. (some battles may have taken some time to resolve but you both remained by each other's side.)
you and mingyu may not see eye to eye on some things, but you always try to make things work. you try to make compromises with each other.
your marriage may have started because of unexpected circumstances... but it has led you both to an unpredictably beautiful future.
a future with your three children. a future with you and him. a future with a loving family that you both only wished of when you were younger.
୨:୧┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ·  · ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈୨:୧
tears continuously pour down your face as you remember your trip down memory lane last night. you try to quietly wipe your tears and lower your weeping but your repeated attempts at silencing yourself only stirs your husband awake.
he's shifting his body beside you to try and face you. "hon..? are you—"
but before mingyu could see your tear stained face, you quickly buried your face into his bare chest.
"woah. (y/n)—honey—are you okay?" he slightly chuckled in his morning voice.
"m jst gld yr he," your muffled voice softly answered.
"what? i didn't understand what you said. could you repeat it while looking at me... please?"
he knew just how to get you to open up to him.
darn you, kim mingyu!
you gave in to his request.
“i’m just glad you’re here…”
you looked up at him and when you met each other’s eyes, his slowly started going wide with worry. "aww, (y/n)... did you have a bad dream?" he gently brushed your tear stained eyes and cheeks.
you shook your head. "no... it was actually the opposite."
giving him a small smile, you rest your head against his warm toned chest as you begin to share the contents of your dreams.
“i dreamt about us last night. how everything started to how everything is now. it opened my mind to how much we’ve been through all these years. it made me feel more grateful to have you as my life partner and husband.”
tears started to welled up in mingyu’s eyes. his heart overflowing with even more love for you.
"thank you for fighting for us, love. thank you for fighting for me–for fighting for our family. i know many were opposed to us because of the sanctity of our marriage but we proved them wrong by staying true to our vows. i’m so thankful that i have the best husband, partner, and father (to our children)–it’s more than i could ever ask for. i love you.”
with that, mingyu embraced you ever so delicately with his muscular arms, it was as if a gentle giant holding a porcelain vase, afraid you were going to break if he applied too much pressure.
“all the promises that i’ve made to you, on our wedding day and after we were married, will never be in vain (y/n)... i can assure you that. we’ve already been through so much together; we’ve witnessed each other's worst pains and great joys. we work great as a team and i wouldn’t want to experience the rest of my life without you. i want to keep making more great memories with you. i want us to keep being by each other's side. thank you for loving me, even though i’m not perfect.”
“i’m not perfect either gyu. we both are imperfect—but it’s that imperfection of ours that i love so much. we’re not perfect but we are perfectly imperfect for each other to love. we complement each other’s weaknesses with our strengths.”
his hold on you tightened slightly, as if he was afraid you would suddenly disappear. you couldn’t see it, but a single tear rolled down mingyu’s cheek. he wore a bittersweet smile on his face.
your sentimental words have your husband feeling bashful and so warm inside.
feeling that his throat was closing up soon, he could only muster up the courage to utter one last endearment to you.
“i love you (y/n)… more than you could ever know… thank you for loving this imperfect me.”

Where The Osmanthus Whispers
"Thank you for taking care of our boy, as well as celebrating his birthday with him on our behalf."
You responded to the two individuals on the laptop screen, saying:
"It's nothing to worry about at all."
"Every year, we are fortunate to have you there. Otherwise, we can't bring ourselves to relax. Even though Zayne is a grown-up, taking care of his health and spending time dating are still things that concern the two of us the most."
When you were unsure of how you should respond, Zayne's mother piped up:
"Oh my! Why did you mention that? Look how she's blushing! Surely they're really happy together, right, dear?"
Auntie immediately turned around and asked, startling you. You attempted to clarify:
"Ah, the truth is we aren't..."
"I know you'll take excellent care of Zayne. But hey, if he does anything to upset you, make sure to call and let me know! I will always stand by your side!”
"Auntie, we are not—"
"That is all!" We have to go now. We entrust Zayne's birthday celebration to you again this year!"
"—dating…"
Beep. Beep. Beep.
You grumbled and glanced at the screen where the call had just ended. Zayne's parents traveled away from home for business, but every year they sent him presents from the places they visited. This year, as previous ones, the present package was delivered to your address. Surely Zayne's parents knew he was too busy at the hospital all day and night to return home, so they sent it to you instead.
Every year, it was just you and Zayne celebrating his birthday together. When you were children and his family was still around, you went to his house to celebrate. Now that he had grown up, Zayne no longer wanted to throw large parties. Sometimes he even forgot his own birthday. If it were not for the wishes and presents from his parents, or the cake you brought to his place, he would probably let the anniversary slip away into oblivion.
Come to think of it, Zayne's present was sent to you, his birthday party was organized by you, his parents somehow always assumed you two were dating... If only it were like that!
You reclined back on the sofa and turned on your phone. The first name that appeared on its contact list was invariably Zayne. You tapped the call button.
After a ring, Dr. Zayne's face emerged. He was not in the office, and the scene behind him made it clear he was in the hospital cafeteria.
“I'm here.”
You smiled as a greeting. “Is Doctor Zayne on his lunch break?”
“Several colleagues invited me to lunch. What about you? Not skipping lunch, are you?”
“Nope.” You replied. “Your parents have just called. Your present has also arrived at my door."
The corner of Zayne's mouth, which was always straight, curled up a bit before swiftly returning to its natural shape. But you managed to capture that moment.
“I will fetch it after work.”
“Hello, Doctor Zayne! Can I ask you something about this morning's meeting?” A female voice sounded very close. That was not Yvonne's. Zayne nodded back to the person whose face you could not see, then he said to you:
“Is there anything else you want to share with me?”
"No." You answered a bit bluntly. Something ugly and unpleasant began to awaken in your mind.
“I'll see you later then.”
Zayne spoke. Then the screen switched off. You laid down on the sofa and glanced up at the ceiling, mind buzzing with the conversation at Akso Hospital a few days before.
Long story short, you were telling Nurse Yvonne about your plans for a celebration on Zayne's birthday. Greyson overheard it and volunteered to help. During the discussion, he mentioned:
“Recently there have been a lot of female interns coming to the hospital. They all appear to be big fans of Doctor Zayne. Aren’t you jealous?"
"Erm…" You were confused for a second.
Greyson shook his head, as if he had no choice but to deal with the situation. "You're too subjective. Although Dr. Zayne is incredibly devoted and trustworthy, a little jealousy like this may spice things up and bring the two of you even closer to each other."
“I… Wait, what are you talking about?…”
After then, you were forced to spend half an hour listening to Greyson as the "guru" of your relationship with Zayne. Apparently, he, like everyone else, believed you and Doctor Zayne were romantically involved. You attempted to find a way to clarify it, but Greyson did not give you a chance. So you wondered how a person who claimed to know so much about love like himself could still be single.
In your room, you rolled back and forth on the sofa. At last, you decided to stop being concerned about it and focus on arranging Zayne's birthday party, which was just around the corner.
Tumblr media
Everything went according to plan. Even Zayne, who was undoubtedly aware of the surprise party planned for him, followed your requests in a more obedient way. Thanks to the help of Doctors Riley, Greyson and Yvonne, the birthday party at the villa in the woodland happened especially warm and pleasant. Zayne was also genuinely delighted.
But it was not the only present you had prepared for him. As a child, Zayne's parents once told him, "The blessing given to you by the first stranger you meet on your birthday will supposedly come true". That was why you made the effort to ensure that the first person he saw on his birthday morning every year was you. This year was no different.
Zayne arrived at the destination on time. The modest food truck you rented in the forest was stocked with sweets and pastries. Zayne sampled all of the treats, but his absolute favorite was the frosted sugar cookies that you made by yourself. Following that, he proposed that you two go for a stroll around.
The osmanthus woodland was dyed yellow. The mellow fall sunlight, along with the crisp air, was quite pleasant. The dry leaves rustled under your feet as you ventured alongside Zayne. After a time, you decided to break the stillness:
“Last night, I dreamed of something very strange.”
Zayne slowed down and looked at you, wondering: "Is there any dream of yours that isn't strange?"
You threw him a glance, then laughed:
“It really was! Well, I dreamed of us in another world. There, Zayne moved far away from me when he was a child. We didn't keep in touch anymore. When we grew up, you became Doctor Zayne, and I was your patient.”
Zayne remained silent so you could finish your narrative, but he gazed at you as if he were anxious that your dream would come true and the two of you would be separated for a prolonged amount of time.
"In my dream, I always regretted not being with Zayne on your birthdays... But, if we really lost contact with each other many years ago, do you think we would see each other again?”
"Of course." Zayne responded without thinking too much. "Because of your negligence and lack of knowledge about health care, you would most likely need to visit the hospital on a regular basis. Then we would meet again."
You frowned. "Look who's talking! Last year, you tried to work on your birthday. It wasn't until late at night that you returned home to celebrate with me. If you didn't get a break this year, you'd definitely spend the entire day at the hospital, right?"
Zayne's footsteps came to an absolute halt. You had both just arrived at the lakeshore. Sunlight and osmanthus flowers appeared to pour gold into the lake. Shimmering. He turned to you and replied:
"Since someone took the trouble to organize a big birthday celebration for me, I must participate wholeheartedly. Otherwise, she would be extremely sad."
You smiled.
“I know that Doctor Zayne constantly prioritizes the health of others. But to me, your health is equally important. Come to think of it... The me in that dream didn't get to celebrate birthday with Zayne every year... She had many regrets. If we hadn't grown up together, things would be very different now, right?"
“That's right,” Zayne replied, “The me in your dreams would not have someone to celebrate his birthday with every year. The box containing his presents from someone important would be empty. No one would ask him to help with homework but ended up falling asleep instead. He would not know who to comfort with ice cream. His sleeves would not get wet because someone's hand was holding too tightly when they went to the beach for fireworks together. His shadow beneath the moon would be very lonely on the long road..."
Zayne hesitated. He reached out to pick up the yellow blossom that had just fallen onto your hair.
“But even so, he would try hard to see his childhood friend again. They would be together again, making up for all the regrets during the time they were apart. They would always have each other in the later years. Just as we are now.”
For a moment there, you were unsure of what to say. Emotions surged in your heart, driving you to cry. You suppressed it, turned to face the lake and said:
“I really admire the me in that dream. Because she was free to express her feelings to Zayne… Because she wasn't…”
"Wasn't?" Zayne inquired out of curiosity.
"Nothing. I'm just wondering, if we weren't friends who grew up together, would things be clearer? For instance,... your parents, colleagues, classmates, patients, and others would not misunderstand the relationship between us..."
"Misunderstand?"
Confusion appeared on Zayne's face. You observed a golden flower descending onto his hair. Standing on tiptoe, you assisted him in taking it down. All of a sudden, Zayne grabbed your wrist. His eyes locked with you.
“Are you saying others are misunderstanding us?”
"Yes." You responded quietly. “They think we're… well… dating.”
“Are we not?”
"Huh?!"
The wind whistled. Flowers and leaves rustled together. Above your head, below your feet. But the sound of your heart beating was louder and clearer than anything. Zayne's hand traveled gently around your wrist, eventually grasping the osmanthus flower you were holding. He separated your fingers so that they would interlace with his.
"In the past, when I was about to leave home to attend a far-away school, there was a girl who gathered all of her courage to tell me this, 'Zayne, don't date anyone! I'll grow up soon! Wait for me!’ I kept my word to her. But it appears she has already forgotten what she told me."
The skin on your face was heated. You made an effort to turn away to hide your shyness, but Zayne frantically ran his hand through your hair, keeping your face toward him. You muttered:
"I was still a kid at that time... You skipped many grades and transferred to Linkon… I was so afraid we wouldn't be able to see each other anymore…”
You had said those words, that you wanted Zayne to wait until you grew up. You did not dare to consider the possibility that he would grow up before you did and eventually date someone else. You would no longer be able to be with him. Those childish words of yours were still kept in his heart until this moment.
“That's why I tried to study hard and looked forward to visiting you every weekend. I waited until you graduated, until you started your career. I counted every day off to be by your side. I don't expect you to recall what you said to me in our childhood. But, given how you are always at my side, taking care of me, and sharing your life with me, I assumed everything was obvious by now. That we belong together.”
“Well…” You tried to reorganize the words in your tangled emotions. Zayne and you had always been together like this. You had long been more than just friends. But you were always terrified of crossing that boundary just to discover he would not have the same feelings for you. The bridge of your nose burned slightly as you pressed your face against Zayne's massive palm, which had always protected you.
"I regret not expressing my feelings properly to you sooner." Zayne spoke gently. He took a step forward and hugged you. “Honestly, I am not good with words. I believed that simply being close to you was enough to convey my feelings. But it concerned you even more, which was not my intention."
You smiled softly, arms wrapping around Zayne's back.
"I wasn't certain I was that special in Zayne's heart. So I kept hesitating, doubting you, doubting myself... Now I understand. I know that I am able to freely express my feelings to you, just like the girl in my dream. Thank you, Zayne.”
Zayne's breath merged with yours, carrying the aroma of osmanthus and pastries. He whispered:
“Then I should learn to express my emotions even more. Starting now.”
Zayne's golden gaze focused on the corner of your lips. His fingers caressed your face in such a delicate manner. You smiled, eyelids half-closed. He leaned down to offer you the most tender kiss of all. Osmanthus blossoms fluttered in the breeze, delivering to you and Zayne the blessings of autumn.

Summary: All of their friends and family turn up to their baby shower, but so do Evan's parents. And things don't go quite to plan.
Enjoy.

"Looking good."
Tilting her head to one side, (Y/n) let a smile trickle across her lips when her eyes landed on Chris. He paused midway through rushing down the hall and a cheesy grin curved over his lips and put creases in his eyes.
He looked himself up and down before beaming his smile at (Y/n). She didn't know where he got his bundle of energy from. All of them knew Chris hadn't slept much last night, he had been riding high on adrenaline, much the same as Evan had been. They were all excited and flooded with anticipation for today. It was the baby shower.
Chris loved any excuse for a party, he didn't care when or where it was or why they were celebrating. He just loved to have everyone gathered together and the music and the atmosphere always brought out the best in him. Parties were his scene, and Eddie had a big family so Chris was forever invited to birthdays and anniversaries and weddings.
Today was better though, this was something for him to celebrate. This was an event Chris could join in with and not just be additional family. This was for his baby brother or sister.
"You want help?" Chris held his hand out somewhat expectingly towards (Y/n) and his smile melted her heart.
"Thank you sweetheart," She didn't technically need his help right now, but it was too sweet an offer to turn down.
(Y/n) let Chris take her hand while she pressed her other palm against the wall to steady herself. She still couldn't put a lot of weight on her left foot, even a week after her fall. The swelling had finally started to go down, but her foot wasn't a normal colour and she was walking with a limp and forever tilting towards the right like she was about to fall over.
He gave her hand a squeeze and took the lead down the hall, making sure to walk slow so (Y/n) could keep up with him.
She had to walk on her tiptoe mostly when she put any weight on her left foot and her knee was forever bent forward rather than being held straight. It made her feel like a flamingo with the way she constantly stood and leaned and held one leg up. But this was the only way (Y/n) could balance and walk unaided, and she wasn't going to use crutches.
The pair of them headed down the hall and made their way into the kitchen, pausing on the threshold to watch the scene in front of them.
Neither of them could make out what Evan was preparing, but it smelled good. He was leant over the counter, seemingly doing five jobs at once. He unwrapped clingfilm from silver trays, set cakes down onto plates and spun round to move some mini bites from a hot tray whilst trying not to burn his fingers.
And then there was Eddie, about to reach out for a plate until Evan slapped his hand away without casting one glance over at him.
(Y/n) sank her teeth down in her lower lip to morph her smile when Eddie's upper lip curled and he rolled his eyes.
"I can arrange a few cakes on a plate, you know." He quipped sassily, but all he got in response was a deadpan look from Evan who looked unamused. "What, you don't trust me to carry them all the way to the table?"
"What's the rule?"
A quiet 'ooh' tumbled past (Y/n)'s lips and she gently nudged Chris, encouraging him to head off into the living room. She knew he was waiting for Eddie's parents to arrive and the moment they turned up, Chris would be at the front door to greet them.
Her arms folded over her bump and she leaned against the doorway, her head tilted against the door while her eyes focused on her boys. Evan finally straightened up and turned to face Eddie who had his hands on his hips and an unhappy expression on his face.
"I cook, Tommy cleans and you…" A hint of a smile graced Evan's lips while one hand gripped the counter and the other planted on his hip, waiting for Eddie to finish the little rule they had come up with.
"Stay out the kitchen." Eddie finished in a grumble, quirking one brow with his jaw jutting from side to side.
He was no chef, they all agreed on that, and it was a good thing that Tommy, (Y/n) and Evan were all good in the kitchen. It meant Eddie never had to cook, something Chris was also relieved about, and right now Evan was in his element. He didn't need Eddie to help try and move the food into the dining room, he just wanted to be left to his own devices in here.
Evan caught Eddie's chin in his grip and nudged his head back so he could have a kiss. His hand trailed down Eddie's neck, fluttered across his collar bone and finally rested on his chest, giving him a little shove until he sighed and backed up towards the dining room.
He didn't know what to do with himself. Evan and Maddie had been doing the food preparation, Tommy had tidied up and put a few minimal decorations up wherever Maddie told him to. All Eddie seemed to do was get dressed and wait for orders that weren't coming.
"Baby, tell him to let me help." Eddie reached his arms out for (Y/n) when she slowly hobbled into the kitchen. He held her by the waist and reeled her into his chest.
He pecked her temple and started to glide his hands up and down her waist and over the small of her back. Their chests leaned together and Eddie tilted her back like they were in a dance, but just as he peppered a kiss to her lips, his brows furrowed and he tilted his head down.
"Where's your boot?" His hands gave her hips a squeeze and he rose a brow, the firm line of his lips telling her not to bother trying to play this off.
"In the bedroom."
"You're meant to walk in it, not sleep in it, go put it on." Evan wafted the tea towel in the direction of the hallway but when he snook a glance across at her, (Y/n) frowned.
"I'm not hobbling around in that for a party, besides, I don't have to wear it all the time."
She flopped her head forward onto Eddie's shoulder and looped her arms around his neck, dragging her fingers over the short hairs at the back of his neck which made him tremor against her. The boot strapped around her foot and ankle and it went up towards the back of her knee. It didn't exactly match the outfit (Y/n) had on.
She had settled for a thin lace black top with dark tone butterflies sewn across the material. Matched with a pair of knee-length black leggings and her sandals. Heels weren't an option with her messed up ankle and the baby bump weighing her down. The boot didn't go with her outfit and (Y/n) didn't have to have it on every second of the day. She could take it off for a while to let her foot rest and she had worn it this morning while she did a few odd jobs around the house.
(Y/n) didn't want it on if they were going to be having friends over and taking pictures, she wanted to look good, not bandaged up.
"If you don't wear it you'll mess up your ankle, you're already walking around on it too much."
"Evan…"
"Go sit down until everyone arrives. And you put that boot on later." There wasn't much room for discussion in Eddie's tone and (Y/n) found herself nodding along instantly. She would wear it later when her foot started to ache, when it hurt to hobble (Y/n) knew she needed the support before she did any further damage.
She felt Eddie press a kiss to her temple and his hands lingered on her hips until she was out of reach, slowly heading through to the living room to sit with Chris.
***
When he felt an arm curve around the back of his shoulders, Eddie let himself relax back until his shoulders hit a firm chest and he felt a familiar pair of lips against the back of his head. He smiled at the hand that draped over his collar bone and the feeling of those fingers tracing random patterns over the top of his crisp white button up shirt.
A smile danced across his lips and he tilted his head back so he could look up at Tommy who curved around him like a jacket.
Tommy pressed a kiss to his cheek and leaned his temple against Eddie's for a few seconds while the music blasted through the garden and filtered through the air.
"All good?" He murmured softly, grazing his teeth across Eddie's ear which had him shivering and gripping his beer bottle tighter.
Eddie found the will to hum and nod his head when he realised he hadn't given Tommy an answer.
Everyone looked happy so far. Chris was filtering around the garden, finding different people to talk to and riding high on the adrenaline. He had spent quite a lot of time with Eddie's parents the moment they arrived, showing them his room and the nursery which he had helped decorate. Chris had finally let his grandparents have a moment to themselves before he undoubtedly would go back to them.
Evan was stood across the garden with Bobby, the pair of them looking like they were exchanging secrets nobody else would be able to hear. And they could both see (Y/n) stood with Maddie and Karen, laughing about something neither of them could hear or make out.
When (Y/n) clocked the boys looking her way, her smile seemed to melt and something flashed across her eyes like a shooting star. She leaned her head at an angle, keeping the eye contact for a few seconds.
And both of them grinned when she balanced on her right leg so she could lift up her left leg just a little. Showing off the boot Evan had graciously helped her get on ten minutes ago. She had been in pain quicker than any of them thought and she gave in almost immediately, asking Evan to help her get it on.
It didn't go with the outfit and it was annoying, (Y/n) thumped when she walked and she felt like she was making indents in the grass when she walked out in the garden. But the support stopped her from leaning too far to the right and she could put a bit more weight down on her left foot without too much flaring pain licking up her leg. When they were going to take photos, (Y/n) was taking the boot off.
Tommy grinned against Eddie's cheek but when he heard the hinges on the back gate creak, he looked over to the left.
"Babe…" His hand patted down on Eddie's chest until he twisted to look across at the gate.
They had told everyone to come through into the garden and the gate had been left open for anyone else to walk in. But they hadn't expected Evan's parents to walk through the gate.
"I thought he said he didn't invite them." Tommy kept his voice quiet and tried to fake a smile to keep the atmosphere going. They didn't need to make a scene, Evan's parents might be here giving an olive branch their way. They might not make any remarks or upset any of them, they might just show some support tonight.
"Yeah… Buck, more guests." Eddie ticked his head to the side, almost clocking his head into Tommy's nose while he raised his glass to catch their boyfriend's attention. Those were his guests and he could go and greet them and start the introductions. Eddie and Tommy were staying well away and they knew (Y/n) would keep away too.
The smile on Evan's face faded the moment he looked away from Bobby.
Why were his parents here?
He could feel his shoulders quaking and pulling up near his neck and his eyes immediately scanned around the garden until he was locking gazes with his big sister. They were both under the impression that their parents wouldn't be coming today.
Evan had told them last week about the baby. He had finally gotten through to his mum on the phone and he tried to keep his tone level and his voice calm as he explained that (Y/n) was pregnant and he was going to have another kid. Since he, Tommy and (Y/n) all considered Chris their kid too.
He had been surprised when his mother sounded happy, he had been waiting for her to chide him and tell him how many mistakes he was making with his life. He thought she would ask who's baby it actually was or tell him to walk away from the relationship like she tried to do last time they were in town. But his mum had been shockingly happy, she congratulated him and said this was 'wonderful news' and she didn't sound sarcastic.
Evan casually brought it into conversation that (Y/n) was nearly seven months along and so Maddie was throwing a baby shower. But his parents never asked if they could come and they never said they would make the trip down for the party.
He hadn't expected them, and by the look on Maddie's face, she hadn't expected them to turn up either.
He placed his beer bottle down on the nearest surface, patted Bobby's shoulder and took the deepest, most calming breath possible before he steered himself in their direction.
He wasn't ready for this.
They were bound to say something. They would give funny looks or make little comments and the last time his mum had been around (Y/n), she hadn't been kind. Eddie had quickly steered (Y/n) away last time before she started a fight.
"Hey, you came."
Shock rattled through Evan and he froze when his mum reached out to hug him. He wasn't used to hugs. They were always short and awkward, they never felt like hugging a parent, it always felt like hugging a distant aunt he never knew he had. Maddie was the one who hugged Evan like the world depended on it. She hugged him like she loved the bones of him, those were the hugs he was used to.
The only time his parents properly hugged him without feeling forced was after he had the fire truck crush his leg and they came down to see how he was recovering from his operations.
His arms cautiously curved around his mum and he let her drag him down to her due to the height difference. His eyes widened and he quietly gasped when she kissed his cheek.
"Oh, honey of course we came. This is our first grandchild, after all." She gave his biceps a tight squeeze and crinkled her nose as she smiled up at him.
His brows rose in surprise and he felt his dad pat his shoulder before he moved to set a bag down along with the other presents everyone had placed on the table near the back door. Evan dreaded to think what the present was, his parents weren't great at gifts, at least for Evan. And this wasn't for him, this was for his baby. It wasn't like they actually knew Evan on a deeper level or knew any of his partners properly so he didn't dare think what they had brought.
But it was the thought that counts and they were trying, Evan was willing to try too.
"Do you want to come and get a drink?" Evan tried not to cringe when his mum held his elbow. He wasn't used to physical contact with her and right now she was stood closer to him than she had in years.
Was this all he had to do to get his parents to accept his relationship? If he'd of known extending their family and having a baby would have brought out the acceptance in his parents, Evan would have done this sooner.
"Evan, we're so happy for you." Margaret patted Evan's arm before she let go in exchange for the drink he handed to her. He knew neither of his parents would drink, and he had no idea if they were staying in town for the night or if they were going straight back home after this. He didn't really want them to stick around, but the effort was encouraging.
"You… you are?" He looked between them, raising a brow across at Maddie when she watched Phillip pat his shoulder.
"Of course we are, you're finally settling down."
Evan nodded, somewhat pleased with his dad's words and guided them towards (Y/n) and Maddie just as Karen drifted off to find Hen and Chimney. He walked behind them, curving an arm around (Y/n)'s waist so he could kiss the top of her head and hand her another drink.
"You came," Maddie wrapped her mum up in a quick hug and kissed her dad before she stood at (Y/n)'s side again. She could feel the nervousness radiating off of her.
(Y/n) didn't know what to say. She didn't know how to act when last time she had been ready to throw fists with how rude and disrespectful Margaret had been towards all three of her partners. She took jibes at Eddie and Tommy and started putting Evan down like she always did, and (Y/n) wouldn't stand for that.
Right now, though, Margaret was smiling and she looked the calmest (Y/n) had ever seen her. It was unnerving.
"Evan, you never said on the phone, do you know what you're having? Boy or girl?" Margaret looked down towards (Y/n)'s bump and for a moment it looked like she was about to reach out, but she thought better of it and stayed put next to Phillip instead.
(Y/n) danced her fingers across her stomach and looked up at Evan, letting him take the lead on this.
"No, we're leaving it a surprise."
Maddie had begged them to find out. She asked for them to get the midwife to write it down so they could do a little reveal today at the party, but all of them disagreed. They liked the thought of keeping everyone in suspense and guessing. They wanted to wait until the birth to find out, like it was supposed to be. And Tommy had started taking bets with his friends down at the 217 and Harbour.
After a few minutes of polite chat that turned (Y/n)'s brain to mush and sent her head spinning, she slouched back against Evan's chest and tilted her head back to look up at him. Her lips curved up and she tried not to squirm when she felt his cold fingertips sliding beneath her top to feather across her bump. He knew she was ticklish, it was why he was biting down a smirk and deliberately not looking at her.
It was good to see him talking to his parents calmly for a change and not having to hold back his words or his true feelings. They weren't putting him down, they were making an effort and it was a good start.
(Y/n) gave his wrist a gentle squeeze and tilted her head to pepper a few kisses against his throat, feeling him shiver beneath her wet lips.
He kissed her temple in retaliation and leaned his head close so she could whisper in his ear.
"The baby wants some cake." Her words tickled the shell of his ear and she squeezed his hand again before she pulled out of his arms. She didn't know who Hen got to make the cake, but the baby loved it and (Y/n) needed to get some more before it was demolished. Tommy had already had two slices, Eddie was on his third and Chris kept going back for more. There wouldn't be much left soon.
She could feel Evan's hands lingering on her waist until he had to let go before he toppled over. His touch left shivers in his wake and (Y/n) found herself grinning as she slowly hobbled over to the buffet table.
The height of the boot set her off balance and it didn't feel right to wear one high heel shoe to try and level it out and (Y/n) couldn't balance in one heel and one flat strapped boot. Her weight was constantly leaning to the right to keep as much weight off her left ankle as possible and as much as the boot made her feel secure and helped her walk, the pressure didn't do much good when the swelling was only just going down.
When her right foot caught and bent at an odd angle, her hands shot out for the table to steady herself. She felt a pair of hands quickly grab her elbow and her waist, reeling her back up before she went down on her knees or crashed into the table and sent it flying.
"You okay there?"
Embarrassment tainted (Y/n)'s face as she looked up over her shoulder to find Bobby stood behind her with a calm expression and a tender look in his eyes.
"Hm, thank you." She dipped her eyes down and tried to straighten up so Bobby didn't have to keep hold of her. That was why she didn't want to wear the boot, it didn't look right and it set her off balance with every step. At least she hadn't gone down like a sack of potatoes and made a right fool of herself in front of everyone.
"No problem, so, how are you?" Bobby nodded when (Y/n) pointed to the cake, silently asking if he wanted another slice since she was cutting some for herself.
She put a slice on his plate, one on hers and plated another bit up so she could go and find Chris in a minute and hand him some before it all disappeared. Her right hip leant up against the table and she kept a steady hand on the edge, just to make sure she didn't set herself off balance again.
"I'm doing better… this things more hassle than it's worth, though." Her gaze cast down to the boot and her head ticked to the side. She took a sweeping glance around the garden, just to make sure none of the boys had caught her subtle trip.
If they saw they would be flying over to make sure she was alright and Evan wouldn't let her take the boot off if he saw she had tripped. But she was going to discretely hide it soon so she could walk a bit better and feel a little more normal.
"At least your a better patient than Buck, I tell you if he does any more damage to that leg I'm not babysitting him again."
A chuckle rumbled through Bobby's chest and caused (Y/n)'s chest to flutter with a quiet laugh. She agreed. They had all been pulling their hair out when Evan had his accident with the fire truck.
The operations weren't so bad, it was the recovery. Trying to tell Evan to take it easy was like talking to a brick wall expecting an answer. (Y/n) had been helping him get washed and get in and out of the bath without getting his cast wet. Tommy and Eddie had been helping him move about the house since he wasn't great on crutches.
They all had to stay with him at some point or another so he didn't try and overdo it. Bobby and Maddie had been round to help calm him down and prevent him from trying to do too many physio exercises or push himself too far in his recovery. He had been the best and the worst patient in the world, all at once.
"Hopefully the only person needing babysitting will be this one." (Y/n) didn't dare think about any of her boys having any accidents. She didn't want to consider Evan getting any worse with his leg or having another injury. She didn't need to think about Eddie getting shot again or Tommy coming off shift with a busted shoulder.
The only one (Y/n) wanted to think about babysitting was their impending arrival. And Bobby seemed to be on the same train of thought because his expression softened and his eyes cast down to her bump.
"Well in that case, me and Athena are always available."
"You might regret saying that in a few months," (Y/n) gave Bobby's shoulder a squeeze before she picked up the paper plates and weaved past him. Heading in the direction of Chris while Bobby turned to drift over to Athena and May who were sat basking in the sun.
(Y/n) took a deep breath when her eyes landed on Chris and she realised who he was talking to. Eddie's parents. She hadn't had a proper conversation with them since they arrived today. Eddie had talked to them for a long while before the party officially got in swing and Evan had exchanged pleasantries with them.
But (Y/n) hadn't gotten round to speaking to them yet, she never knew what to say or how to act. Eddie's mother had given her the riot act when they first met and made it clear she didn't like Eddie being in a multiple relationship like this, as if it was somehow (Y/n)'s fault. As if she had enchanted all three men under her spell, like this was all her doing.
Things had settled down between them since then, but they had mixed emotions about the baby. Eddie had made them promise to try and get along with his partners today, he told them in no uncertain terms that he didn't want a fight or an argument happening today and they agreed. They said they would try to get along.
"Here baby, I saved you some." She held the plate out to Chris, watching his eyes light up as he took it from her with a wide smile.
She let herself slump against the back of the garden chair Chris was perched on and watched the way he swung his legs back and forth. His head was nodding along to the music and he instantly dived in to take a big bite out of the blue and blushing pink sponge cake.
A quiet "Thanks mum," murmured between mouthfuls of cake and he rested his head against (Y/n)'s arm when she patted his shoulder.
"And you, you look lovely today." Eddie's mum motioned her hand towards (Y/n) with a genuine smile that caught her off guard. She wasn't usually one for dishing out compliments, especially not to (Y/n).
What had Eddie said to her this morning?
"Oh, thank you." Her eyes cast down to her outfit that she hadn't been too sure about this morning until Tommy had been unable to look anywhere else and had his hands roaming all over her. "Chris said you're staying in town for a few days, do you have anything planned?"
Chris had been more than overjoyed that they were staying for a few days, he didn't have that much family here in LA so to have his grandparents here was a lovely surprise.
"I think we've all been conscripted into the zoo tomorrow, something about Buck giving us a tour round?" She looked a little unsure about the details, but the way she laughed at the end of her sentence made (Y/n)'s heart take flight from her chest.
She watched the elder woman brush her long hair over her shoulder and tilt back so casually in her chair, as if they had all been friends for years. She was making an effort, a true effort. And by the sounds of it, all of them would be spending the day together tomorrow. A way to become closer and intergrate into a bigger family.
"You're in for a treat." (Y/n) leaned down so she could kiss the top of Chris's head when he started to giggle.
Going to the zoo was Evan's thing to do with Chris, and going to the cinema was something Tommy and Chris both enjoyed. Just like Eddie and Tommy preferred to go to boxing and wrestling matches together, something Evan and (Y/n) weren't so keen on. They all had their little things together, but the beach, arcades and theme parks were things they all loved to do together as a family.
Tomorrow sounded like it was going to be a good day.
Once the conversation started to change and taper off into a new direction, (Y/n) politely excused herself. She put her empty plate on the side table, unsure where to drift off to now but she knew she was ready to sit down for a while.
Shivers tore up and down her arms when she felt a familiar pair of lips attach to the side of her neck. She could feel Tommy's teeth nip and graze over her skin and a slight scratch when he bit down softly. His chest moulded up into her back, curving around her and leaning down to be level with her.
"Here," He draped his right arm around her waist, holding his hand out in front of her where he was holding two plastic cups between his fingers.
She gratefully took one but her chest tightened and her back jolted against Tommy's chest when a frozen cold beer bottle suddenly pressed into the left side of her abdomen. Droplets of juice splashed around the rim of her cup and drizzled down her hand like the first flickers of rain and electric shocks coursed up and down her side and down through her arm.
"Tommy!" She hissed through a quirked smile, trying to wriggle away but he pressed the bottle closer until the condensation was soaking into her shirt and her stomach was shuddering at the cold temperature.
The bottle moved around to the middle of her bump and she could feel Tommy's fingers dragging along, creating patterns over her shivering skin which had him laughing into her neck. He bit down just enough to leave a scratch against the side of her throat, quickly soothing the touch with his tongue before he reeled his head back.
He peppered a few tender, lasting kisses up and down her throat and leaned round so he was hovering over her shoulder, lips puckered, expecting a kiss.
"Stop trying to wake them up," (Y/n)'s voice came out quieter than a whisper and her words were gentle, spoken into Tommy's mouth as she was already kissing him before she was finished speaking. She knew what he was trying to do, he was trying to get some movement or a kick out of the baby.
"You feeling okay?" He finally shifted the bottle away from her stomach, pulling her lower lip between his teeth with a growl when (Y/n) dragged her finger down the side of his sharp jawline.
"We're good."
He hummed in response, nodding before finally unravelling himself from around her, leaving (Y/n) suddenly cold and hollow as she watched him head over to Evan, presumably who the other drink was for.
Her eyes couldn't seem to pull away from her boys as she took a sip of her drink and feathered her free hand absentmindedly across her bump. She didn't realise she was smiling until Evan caught her eye and winked in her direction.
But her gaze swiftly turned to the right, glancing in the direction of the Buckleys, gathered next to Maddie.
"What're they doing here?" Margaret motioned her glass in Eddie's direction who was now stood chatting to his parents. He was stood behind Chris's chair, both arms wrapped around his son's shoulders and his lips attached to the top of Chris's curls.
(Y/n) took a few steps closer, unsure what Margaret was talking about, but she could feel ice cold dread clawing down the back of her neck and down her spine as Margaret's expression seemed to change. The placid smile she wore earlier was nowhere to be seen. Her lips were parted and curved down oddly at the corners with her upper lip and nose crinkling in what (Y/n) could only describe as horror.
The way she narrowed her eyes had (Y/n) shuddering and realising that she was looking across at Evan. More specifically, at the way Tommy was draped around Evan like a blanket.
Tommy had his arm around Evan's torso, hand flat on his stomach, chest up against Evan's back and he kept kissing the side of his head in between drinks.
"Did you think they'd be at work?" Maddie tilted her head to one side, unsure why her mum was so spooked and uneasy all of a sudden. Had Evan not explained things properly? Had he only mentioned the baby shower in passing and not given all the details? After all, they hadn't expected their parents to actually turn up today.
"He- he's still with them?"
Anxiety clawed at the back of (Y/n)'s throat and she could feel the baby kicking, waking up with the bursts of adrenaline (Y/n) was getting. Her stomach churned and she was sure that cake she ate was going to make a reappearance.
What was going on? What did Margaret think was happening here? (Y/n) knew it had been too good to be true that they had been so accepting and loving towards Evan when they turned up today. She knew there had to be some reason or miscommunication going on.
"What?" She tried not to let her voice tremble as she walked over to stand beside Maddie, staying as close to her as possible with enough distance between herself and Evan's parents.
"Evan told us you were pregnant, we assumed that meant you'd gotten out of this stage. How can you start a family with this unconventional mess? They shouldn't be here-"
"They're our partners, where else would they be?" A defensive tone took over (Y/n)'s voice and her shoulders straightened and squared up, but her hand stayed on her stomach almost protectively.
So they truly had misunderstood. They thought Evan and (Y/n) had suddenly come out of their relationship with Tommy and Eddie. They thought the baby was just Evan's and that they were starting fresh together without their other two partners. How could they think that Evan would break up with the boys and not tell them? How could they think he would break up with the boys but not (Y/n)?
Evan was constantly telling them how happy he was now. Maddie was always trying to tell them to be inclusive because she knew her brother was the happiest he had ever been. She knew he was loved and cared for and he was who he always wanted to be when he was with his family.
"Well who's baby is it?"
The snappy tone in Phillip's voice took (Y/n) by surprise and she leaned back, taking a step away when his hand moved dangerously close to her stomach. She bit back a groan, hiding the cringe that tore through her when she stepped back on her bad foot and put a bit more weight on it than she was used to recently.
She could feel Maddie's hand moving to grip her arm for comfort and security while she lifted her head, eagerly trying to catch either her brother or Tommy's attention. They were going to need help with this conversation.
"Theirs." (Y/n) surprised herself with the confidence in her voice even though her heart was hammering away in her chest and her head was fogging up.
It was their baby. Paternity didn't matter when there were four people in this relationship and all three of the boys were agreed from the beginning that they were going to raise this baby together, as theirs. Just like they were all bringing Chris up together.
"Please don't do this-" Maddie sighed, pursing her lips when her mum shot her an awful glare and huffed as if Maddie should be chiding and degrading (Y/n) too.
This was a party, a happy occasion and Maddie wanted this to go smoothly. Evan never celebrated his birthday as a child, their parents were too cold and uncaring to give him a special birthday or throw him a party. Maddie always tried to throw little parties for him, but after he left college and moved away, she knew he still didn't celebrate his birthday.
Even now, he was reluctant to have a party or have people acknowledge his birthday and it killed his sister. So to throw a party that was still somewhat for him was all she wanted to do. She wanted to do a party that included Evan and revolved around him and his partners. This was a happy occasion. Everyone was so excited for this baby, Maddie didn't want her parents walking in here and ruining today.
"So you don't know who's child you're having? What are you going to tell them? What are you going to tell people? How fair is it to get Evan to raise a child that probably isn't even his?"
"Hey! That's enough." Evan's voice growled and cut through the music, breaking apart the previously calm atmosphere that seemed to quake around him.
He found himself standing in front of his parents, putting himself in front of (Y/n) and his sister like a shield of armour. The way his shoulders rose and straightened made it seem like he was growing and expanding on the spot and the deep breath he sucked in had his chest rising too.
A bubble of dread swelled up in the pit of (Y/n)'s stomach and she found herself backing away before she could think better of it. She didn't want to stand here and have Evan's parents looking at her like that, she'd had enough of those looks from her own family and from people at work. She wouldn't stand and be stared at or talked to like that in her own home.
(Y/n) aimed for the back door but she didn't get that far before a tense chest moved in her line of sight and hands found her shoulders.
Eddie swerved in front of her, grabbing (Y/n) before she stumbled into his chest. Her head stayed tilted down towards the floor and Eddie kissed the back of her head while one hand moved to curve around her waist instead. He didn't want her to disappear inside, this was their home and no one had the right to make her feel uncomfortable or like she had to walk away.
His thumb glided up and down her hip while his other hand cupped the back of her neck. He slowly walked her back towards their partners who were stood together like a brick wall that no one would be able to break through.
He breathed into her hair, trying to stay calm and stop himself from bounding over there to say something to defend all three of his partners. But he knew he didn't have to. No matter how desperately he wanted to, Evan seemed to have this situation under control. Eddie had spoken to his own parents this morning, this was Evan's ground to cover.
His eyes stayed focused on Evan who looked like he was ready to explode. His hands were balled into fists at his sides, his shoulders were almost touching his jaw and he was visibly shaking and vibrating on the spot.
Even the feel of Tommy's arm around his waist and the feel of his hand squeezing his hip didn't do much to calm Evan down.
"Evan, you can't do this. A relationship as strange as this is one thing, but bringing a child into the equation-"
"You really wanna stand there and lecture me about being a parent, after the way you raised me?" They had no ground to stand on when it came to being a parent. Evan had learned to pick himself up and dust himself down on his own. He learned to go to his big sister to patch him up and give him advice and guide him in the right direction.
He got life lessons and skills and more importantly, a sense of love and belonging from Bobby. Nothing useful came of being around his parents and they couldn't try and lecture him on a subject they had failed so miserably at.
"If you can't accept my family and my choices, then you shouldn't be here. My happiness is more valuable than your opinion."
His voice was quiet enough not to shout aloud for the rest of the neighbourhood to hear, but just on the edge of a louder tone that the rest of his friends and family in the garden would be able to hear.
If they couldn't let themselves be happy for Evan, then he needed them to leave because he was happy and at the best place in his life. He wasn't broken or lost or confused or searching for something that came with reckless consequences. Evan had three adoring partners, a stepson he cherished more than life itself and a baby on the way.
This was a time to celebrate, not a time for his parents to try and put him down like they always did.
"That means you can leave now. Don't let the gate hit you on the way out." Tommy leaned his chin over Evan's shoulder and pointed towards the gate, shaking his beer bottle to further his point. They couldn't stay, they weren't welcome any more after causing a scene and no one was going to miss them if they left.
Evan didn't realise he was shaking until he felt Tommy's hand gliding up and down his waist to try and calm him down and bring him back to the present.
His lips curved into a shaky smile and he dipped his head down to the right when he felt (Y/n) push up behind him. Her lips attached to his arm and her hands found his hips, staying mostly hidden behind him but not wavering in the way she held him, keeping them both grounded and secure. And he could feel Eddie stood on his other side, meshing up against him and Tommy.
As soon as the gate swung shut with a horrid, creaking groan, a wave of relief washed over all four of them and the atmosphere shifted again.
The music playing in the background seemed to become louder and come back into focus. All eyes were in their direction, but all they could see were encouraging looks, soft glances and tender smiles.
"Come on, time for presents."

9:24am:
“Okay, okay, I have to go! I’ll be late for the train!” You push your Orc away, laughing as he tries to press another, final kiss onto your lips.
Chuckling, he locks the door behind the two of you and the pair of you set off down your flats hall and to the lift. “Make sure you have a good day today, yeah?” He tells you as the lift dings and opens.
“You too, tell me whether or not you managed to tell your friends about the house warming tonight.” You smile. Today was the day, from 3 o’clock onwards, it was go time. You felt guilty… A little. But you knew that the guilt would be worth it if it meant that you got to surprise your Boyfriend with the best Anniversary party he’d never forget.
He’d caught you mid planning – you were sat on your phone looking at cake recipes and he just had to look over your shoulder and ruin the fun. Lucky you were able to cover by saying it was a ‘house-warming party.’
“But, we moved in like, two weeks ago?” He’d said, smile fading on his face. “Aren’t you supposed to have them the day you move in?”
“That’s just too chaotic!” You said, laughing a little too hard. “Who has one of those on moving in day? Talk about overwhelming, am I right?” Your heart squeezed when he turned away, eyebrows furrowed in clear disappointment.
You knew he thought you’d forget. Everything was so… much at the moment. Coupled with moving in a few weeks ago, you had plausible deniability to be forgetful.
No, you reminded yourself as the lift descended to the ground floor. No time for guilt, you had to get this show on the road.
“Of course I will, you’ve been planning it for weeks, of course I’ll tell everyone.” Your Orc’s smile faltered slightly. Did you really forget such an important date as your anniversary? Your Orc thought.
Sure, he might have jumped the gun a bit, bought you both a flat to live in for an early present, but who doesn’t get a little overexcited about two years with the love of their life?
There wasn’t even a ‘happy anniversary’ when you both woke up. Your Orc hadn’t said anything either – he’d already said it a hundred times over when he was showing you the flat he bought… you saying it back once on the day wasn’t that much to ask for, was it?
“You okay?” You asked, eyebrows furrowed.
His smile returned, more vacant this time. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
And with that, the two of you set off to work.
10:56am:
Excusing yourself to the bathroom, you dial your partner.
“Hello?”
“Sadie’s annoying me again, she can never keep her mouth shut about her son.” Locking the cubicle door, sitting on a cubicle toilet with the lid down, you fume. “She’s such a boy mum.”
“You know it’s polite to say hello back, right?” your Orc replied, a smirk in his voice. “Don’t tell me she’s coming to the party tonight.” He’d heard all about your vendetta against Sadie, the boy-mother who couldn’t keep her spawn out of her conversation for two minutes. If Sadie was as bad as she sounded, your boyfriend didn’t want to meet her.
“God no.” You said. The bathroom door opened and closed, you lowered your voice, “if I have to hear about ‘precious Braydon is the top of his class again!’ in my own home I might throttle her. Being a parent is fine, but if you’re going to make it your whole personality, don’t even have kids!”
Your Orc sighed from the other end of the phone: “babe, if you’re just calling me to complain about Sadie-”
“No, that wasn’t the only thing!” You said, quickly. “Um… I was hoping that you could stop and get some… fish for tonight.” You lied. There were things that still needed to be done at home, you couldn’t have your Orc coming home too early. Your friends were already at your place, helping you out by decorating. You just needed to cook and do some final touches.
“Fish?” He asked, doubtfully.
“Mhm.” You affirmed. The bathroom sink ran, shut off before the entrance swung open and closed again. “Please? I forgot that June is pescatarian and now I’m going to look like a total bitch for not thinking of her.” While it was true that June was pescatarian, you had to keep your Orc out of the flat. That, and there was already some freshly caught Place at the flat, skilfully hidden away in the freezer.
Everything had to be perfect, including making your friend feel more comfortable.
Your heart twinges as your Orc Boyfriend sighs down the phone. “Okay, I’ll stop by the Fish Monger's on my way home.”
You wanted to tell him that you’re sorry, sorry that he has to go out and spend his money to help you make this surprise… but there are necessary evils in this world.
“Thank you, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
3:15pm:
“We’re in trouble,” was the first thing you heard on the phone. Your best friend had called you, “there weren’t enough streamers, so we improvised.”
“What did you do?” Stomach dropping, you held your breath. It can’t be that bad, right? You reassured yourself, it’s not like your best friend is crazy, they’ve got-
“… You remember June’s Hen night?”
Oh no.
“We to cut up her old sash!” Your best friend exclaims, “it’s shiny and glittery, and she said it was fine!”
You face palm. Leaving work early to get home for this surprise was crucial, you didn’t have time for last minute stops. Your Orc Boyfriend had bought the pair of you a flat for Gods sake, you needed to give him something amazing back too. And it can’t be amazing if there’s the cut up words: ‘Bride to Be’ decorating the room.
He might get the wrong idea if he looks too closely at them. “Look, I’ll head to that party shop on the way back home so we can clean this up.” Rubbing the bridge of your nose, you bid your goodbye and got on the train.
5:33pm:
Running a sleeve along your forehead, pulling out the last cake from the oven and setting it on the side, the door bell rang.
Dread shot through you. Before you could even remove your oven gloves, June was already rushing to the door.
Thank God for the Fish distraction, you thought as a few of your Orc’s friends stepped through the door: An Elf – Leo, your Orc’s college friend, a Goblin – Blik, childhood friend of your Orcs, and Fox-hybrid – Val, your Orc’s best friend from work. “Can you get started on the icing and prepare the wine?” You ask them.
Val let’s out a snicker at your haggard appearance but glides over. “Sure sweetie, what can I do to get started?”
After explaining to Val what you needed help with, you turned to Leo. “You brought the flute, right?”
The Elf gave a nod, his long hair swaying. “Are you alright, dear?” asked Blik, jumping up onto the breakfast table stool opposite you. He leans against the counter, tilting his head. “Do you want me to do something? You look like a mess.”
“Really?!” Your voice cracks at the obvious statement. Everything had to be perfect, of course you were a mess.
Leo was by your side and taking away the oven mitts from you, “leave this to me and Val, go freshen up. Wouldn’t want him to worry about you during the party you prepared.”
“But-” you start, but Leo silences you with a smile at you. “You can relax a little now, we’re all here to help.”
And you did. Leo was always good with words, partly why he and your Boyfriend had stayed close for so long – because he was always good at calming down situations.
Leaving the pair to finish the work, you evacuate to your bedroom.
6:30pm:
Your Orc didn’t believe what you said on the phone. Not one bit. You, who was super conscious about the people around you? Forget that someone had a dietary preference? No. That wasn’t like you.
But never the less, he walked into the Fish Monger’s and grabbed salmon, halibut, trout and cod. A variety of things – he wasn’t sure what June would like – and walking out of the shop, he checks his phone. No calls, no texts.
He sighs. There’s something going on here.
And then it clicked. Smiling, he tosses the bag of fish in the back of his car and clambers inside.
Your Orc refuses to believe that you would be so forgetful.
You had a surprise, didn’t you?
6:59pm:
Adjusting the pot of flowers on the coffee table, you bit your lip. “(Y/N). Stop.” Your best friend takes your hands in theirs. “It’s okay, everything will be perfect.”
You take one last look at the flower pot and sigh. Eyes sweeping the room one last time, make sure that the balloons are all inflated, streamers and bunting are where they’re supposed to be and that the food is ready to go.
The front door jangles, you dart for the lights, your friends duck behind the sofa and your Orc’s companions hide behind the breakfast bar.
Darkness shrouds the in-house occupants as you stand, back flush against the wall, praying that your Boyfriend doesn’t spot you when you’re so close to the front door.
The hallway light spills in and casts his large shadow further into the front room.
He doesn’t move for a moment, watching the darkness carefully. Finally, you switch the light.
As soon as the lights come on, everyone jumps up. “Surprise!”
Your Orc’s eyes widen, the edges of his lips curling upwards. He knew it. This wasn’t
“Happy Anniversary!” You approach him and take him by the arm. You smile up at him, “come in,”
“Wait, what is this?” Your Orc Boyfriend plays dumb, “I thought this was a house-warming party.”
“Well, it kind of is.” You rub the back of your head, “but… I felt bad. You bought this whole flat for us and… There’s nothing equal that I could give back to you. So, I thought that, since this was an anniversary present, I’d set up a party with a few of our friends.” You beam.
Your Orc’s eyes scoop around the room, friends smiling at him and beaming. “They helped me get some of this stuff ready of course, my friends did the decorations and yours helped me with baking… Leo said he’s also going to play flute for us.”
The Elf nods, holding up the silvery instrument.
As everyone went to raid the numerous amount of dishes you had prepared, your Boyfriend looks at you as if you were some dreamy mirage.
“What’s that for?” You ask, raising an eyebrow as guests chatter to each other.
Your Orc shakes his head. “Nothing.”
10:21pm:
“I have a confession.” Your Orc says.
The flat had emptied of it’s guests, only leaving you two behind. Sitting on the sofa, wine glasses in hand and surrounded by the chaos that party goers leave behind. Party popper streamers littering the ground and coffee table, over populated with plates and empty wine glasses.
“What?” you ask, smiling.
“I kind of figured out that you were planning a surprise.”
Your smile falters, “did someone tell you? It was Val wasn’t it? That slippery-”
“No, no.” Your Orc tucks a lock of hair behind your ear, “I realised while I was on the way back from the Fisherman's.”
“Oh.” You purse your lips. “Was it that obvious?”
“It’s not like you to forget something so important.” He shrugs. “Even if it was last minute, you remembered that June was pescatarian. That’s what gave it away.”
You let on a weak grin.
“And that’s why I wasn’t all that surprised when I came in.” He took another swig from his wine glass.
“I’ll make sure to do better next time.” You say, looking at the mess in front of you. All that effort to keep the party a secret and it still flunked.
“Don’t be like that,” your Orc turned you to face him, thumb against your chin. “There was nothing to be better at, I loved the surprise… Even if it wasn’t really one.” And with a kiss on your forehead, the pair of you settled into the sofa, falling asleep in each others arms.

"i don't know carlos" you mumbled from your position on the sofa beside him, he had asked you if he could try something new and while it's not like you didn't trust him because you did, you trusted him with your life but what he was suggesting you'd tried before and gotten shamed for it by previous partners but they had all been boys, carlos however was a man and one who knew how to take care of you like the goddess you were.
he practically worshiped the very ground you walked on, people all asked why you were with someone older than you and your answer was simply "he treats me right" and when they asked how you met.. well you could remember that moment in your life pretty vividly.
you had ended up meeting in the most meet cute way you could ever imagine, you'd been on a vacation with your family in madrid, your parents had been wanting to go back ever since their honeymoon 24 years ago.
you'd stopped at a farmers market close to your hotel to pick up some flowers for your parents wedding anniversary when you'd run, literally into carlos who'd been wandering the markets with his mother while on a quick visit home, while you had kept apologizing profusely, carlos simply couldn't take his eyes off you in your little pink plaid skirt and lacy white tank, you looked so soft and sweet and innocent, fuck did he love it.
you'd offered to buy him a coffee or even a pastry of some kind to make up for running into him and he'd said yes mainly just to be near you, to get to know you and that's how you found yourself wandering around the market nibbling on pastries while you chatted away with carlos, it seemed innocent enough, at least that's what you thought.
he'd ask to see you again sometime and you'd agreed thinking that he would make a great friend for while you were in madrid.
but when carlos first started to show an interest in you that was more than platonic after only knowing you a few weeks, you ignored him like the plague, he was just another guy capable of destroying you more than you already had been by the multiple exes in your past.
what made it even more nerve wracking was the fact he was older than you and not by much, at least that's what you thought. carlos on the other hand couldn't stay away and didn't get why you were ignoring him.
meeting you changed his life for the better and having to go a day without hearing you giggle or call him merely just say good morning was killing him.
at least it was until your sister who had met him randomly when you were out together and had decided to meet up with carlos, had explained everything to him, the trauma you'd gone through at the hands of your ex boyfriends, he could understand why you were scared of his advances now.
after a little convincing by your sister and little begging from carlos, he finally got you to agree to a date, he had promised to go slow and treat like every women deserved to be treated, the man worshiped the very ground you walked on after all for christ sakes.
you had kept in touch after leaving spain and when you felt ready you traveled back to madrid to spend time with him and you just never left.
and so here you were a year later, happier than you've ever been in any of your previous relationships and sure you'd been intimate with carlos before but what he was asking now made you nervous, he asked to eat you out saying that you looked so sweet just sitting next him reading and that's what lead to the current situation that you were in "what do you mean you don't know" he asked.
his question had you fidgeting but as always carlos was there to comfort you, placing his hand on your thigh "no fucking touching" you snapped before feeling bad and so you mumbled "please" you pushed his hand off your leg "i need to think and i can't do that with hands on me, your very distracting" you explained with a soft laugh, it just made carlos smile but then said smile faded at another thought.
"why don't you want to.. do you not trust me" he seemed worried and your hand immediately went to his arm "no dulce chico, i trust you it's just the last person i let down there... they didn't ask, i asked them and i was told i was gross and that no man ever does it willingly"
oh now carlos was angry, he couldn't believe that one of your old boyfriends had said that to you "no baby, it's not gross.. i want to make you feel good" his hand went back to your thigh, rubbing small circles on the skin there, carlos noticed you wriggle around and squeeze your legs closer together, your slight very quiet whimper had him raising his eyebrows while he smiled "is the idea of this turning you on angelito"
"maybe" you murmured, your hand taking hold of his own, tangling your fingers together to ground yourself as you sat there thinking and after a few minutes, you'd finally decided "alright you know what.. lets... lets try it" you told him and the way carlos pounced on you then made you giggle.
he moved you onto your back while you kept laughing at his eagerness, he placed a sloppy kiss to your lips before laying himself down in between your legs, fingers moving your underwear to the side quickly before pushing your sweet little skirt over your hips and wrapping his arms over your waist, placing sweet little kisses to the skin of your thigh making you squirm even more.
"carlos.. don't tease me" you whimpered making him chuckle against your thigh "patient angelito" he gently kissed at your folds, groaning at the taste of you on his lips before diving straight in, licking at your juices like a man starved.
"gross my fucking ass.. you taste so perfect.. like honey" he mumbled as his tongue slipped inside you slurping up all the juices that slipped from your aching hole.
the new feelings you were experiencing were euphoric and you just couldn't seem to keep your head on straight no matter what you did, you gripped at the couch cushions and even carlos's hair.
so as a last resort you reached for his fingers that rested on your stomach, when he felt your hand brush his own carlos couldn't help smile against your folds as he pulled away for just a second "you wanna hold my hand" you merely nodded, your other hand gripping out the couch cushion above your head.
carlos couldn't get enough of the way you looked right now with flushed cheeks and your chest rising and falling as you panted in excitement.
he tangled his fingers with yours before going back to work, bringing his thumb to your clit to rub little circles as he licked and sucked at your sweet pussy.
carlos continued like this for a while, listening to you moan blissfully above him, if carlos could describe heaven it would be this, this moment right here with his face buried in your cunt licking at you while you made such beautiful noises, your hands holding onto eachothers, a symbol of your connection and love for each other, after a while he pulled away to kitten lick at your clit and he slipped his fingers inside your tight cunt, feeling you clench around his fingers "jesus angelito... so tight"
your hips started to rut against carlos's hand, causing them to push deeper and deeper in and then you squealed as a sparks zipped up your spine "what the fuck was that" you asked as your breathing calmed down"your g spot" carlos chuckled and hit it again as his fingers kept thrusting in and out at a fast pace and so you kept squealing.
it wasn't long before your gripped carlos's hand a little too tight as you tumbled over the edge, your orgasm hitting you like a truck.
as your breathing calmed down, you sat up slightly to look at carlos, hand still clutched in his, carlos just lay frozen between your legs face wet "you alright baby" you asked and he just chuckled "did you just squirt, since when could you do that"
you stared at him surprised, you had done what? "i did what now?"
to say that you were both surprised was an understatement but when carlos scampered up your body, you giggled at his excitement "i wanna make you do it again" he said, voice shaky and you smiled softly at him
"go on then baby.. make me water" you giggled, hands cupping his face, god he was adorable, this was perfect, this moment, this relationship.. you'd never been happier than this and you hoped that it would never ever end mostly because you had never felt safer than you did right now while wrapped up in carlos strong arms.

lovelorn (and nobody knows) [rafe cameron au fic] chapter 10
Tumblr media
Summary: Isla Carrera had planned for the summer before college to be focused on three things: helping out at her family’s restaurant (the helpful daughter), preparing for college (the good student), and having fun with the Pogues (the loyal friend). But one fateful night, where her car breaks down and her rescuer is none other than Rafe Cameron, seems to send her summer down a path she didn’t see coming–one teeming with a secret, illicit romance with the last person she expected. And if her friends and sister found out, Isla isn’t sure they’ll be so understanding, no matter what her feelings are.

“Are you sure you’re fine on your own?” Kie asks over the phone as Isla walks down the sidewalk at Chapel Hill. “I can catch the next ferry and meet you there.”
Isla snickers. “Why? You don’t wanna be Mom’s helper?” she asks teasingly.
Her sister scoffs. “She’s practically a bridezilla right now.” Kie pauses and Isla hears her mom’s voice in the background. “Mom said she emailed you the details of the number of desserts and stuff that need to be ordered. And for the decorations, she just wants you to get the flowers. Everything else she said we’ll get from here.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Isla says, weaving past other pedestrians as she walks in the direction of her mom’s favorite bakery. “Do you want anything while I’m here?”
“No, I’m chill,” Kie says. “Let me know when you’re headed back.”
“Will do,” Isla answers before ending the call.
It’s a beautiful day out, not too unbearably warm as it tends to get in the summer. The baby blue romper she wears is perfect for this kind of weather, sunglasses shielding her from the sun as she approaches the bakery. Her parents’ twentieth wedding anniversary is quickly approaching, and they decided to throw a party to celebrate. And as much as their mom loves to host a good party, she tends to stress herself out when it comes to the planning part of it, so Isla and her sister have been recruited to help pull it together.
So while Kie is back at home finalizing the guest list, the music arrangement, and caterer, Isla is in charge of dealing with the dessert, flowers, and other decorations. Fortunately, their mom is a Type A personality, so when Isla checks the email Kie was talking about, everything that Isla needs to do is written out in detail.
Entering the bakery, the air conditioner blasting her upon entry. The teal, pink and white theme is bright and surprisingly not an eyesore, and the employees behind the counter greet her with friendly grins. The next couple of minutes are spent with Isla placing the order her mom requested: a three tiered cake, three dozen cupcakes, brownies, and an assortment of cookies, all to be delivered at least two hours before the party starts. She charges it to her dad’s credit card, as instructed, and once that order is placed, she gets herself an iced latte before heading off to her next stop: the flower shop.
She doesn’t mind running these errands, her Beats covering her ears as she makes her way down the sidewalk before letting them hang around her neck when she enters the shop. Isla leisurely admires the various types of flowers, the assortment of colors, petals, and scents that surround her.
Her fingers brush along the petals of sunflowers, her favorite flowers, a smile tugging on her lips. She admires the softness of the petals, just as her phone rings in her pocket. Pulling it out, her smile widens a little when she sees Rafe’s name on the screen. “Hello?” she asks, head tilting as she admires the wall of baby’s breath.
“Hi,” Rafe says. Isla can hear the smile in his voice, one that makes her cheeks warm. God, when the hell was the last time she has been so giddy over a guy? “Out of curiosity, are sunflowers your favorites?”
Isla pauses, gaze dropping to the sunflowers before she spins around and looks out the window pointing to the street. A surprised huff of a laugh escapes her when she sees Rafe standing out on the sidewalk, one hand in his pocket and the other holding the phone to his ear, grinning at her. Isla raises her eyebrows as he raises his free hand in a wave, shaking her head as she gestures him inside.
She sees him laugh. “What’re you doing here?” she asks through the phone as he enters the store, the bell above the door jingling.
Rafe chuckles, hanging up the call as he approaches her, making his way around the pots and flower arrangements. Isla can’t help but admire him, wearing a simple outfit of blue pants and a white button down, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and sunglasses hanging from the neck. He looks good, the sight of him making her pulse quicken as she slowly pockets her phone.
“I met up with some friends earlier,” he tells her, coming to a stop in front of her. Isla doesn’t think she’ll ever get over how much taller he is than her. She has to tilt her head back just to maintain eye contact. “Remembered you telling me you’d be out here running errands, figured I’d keep you company.” He raises an eyebrow, turning his body towards the front of the store as he points to the door with his thumb. “Unless you want me to go.”
“No,” Isla says with a burgeoning smile. “I could use the company.”
His answering grin is panty-dropping, which is super inconvenient given that they’re in public. He tilts his head, a silent go ahead, and Isla chuckles as she walks over to the counter to place the order, in accordance to her mom’s email. As Isla talks to the florist, Rafe stands next to her, elbow resting on the counter and body facing hers with little space between them.
While the employee puts in the order in their system, Rafe speaks up, “So you never answered my question.” When Isla raises a questioning eyebrow at him, he clarifies, “Are sunflowers your favorite?”
Isla smiles, tilting her head. “Why do you wanna know?”
His smile is boyish and utterly flirtatious, and Isla is no better with the way her chest flutters as he looks down at her. “For future reference, of course.”
His answer makes heat pool into her cheeks, the mere thought of Rafe buying her flowers both crazy and thrilling. As she pulls out her dad’s credit card to hand over to the employee, Isla looks away from Rafe and answers, almost shyly, “Yeah, they are,” before hiding her smile by wrapping her lips around the straw to sip at her iced latte.
Once the order at the florist is placed, they walk out of the shop, Rafe opening the door for her to let her exit first. “You got any other errands you need to run?” he asks, putting on his sunglasses.
“No,” she says, putting away her headphones in her tote bag and wearing her own sunglasses. She glances up at him, biting the inside of her cheek before asking, “What about you? You got any plans?”
Rafe tilts his head back, letting the sun bathe his face as the corner of his mouth curves up. Isla’s not sure if she’s ever seen him smile this much. “I was thinking of heading to the park, just chilling for a bit.” He looks down at her. “If that interests you.”
Isla’s heart stutters. “Lead the way.”
*****
“Oh! Wait, can we go in here for a minute?” Isla asks, stopping in front of her favorite bookstores out here on the mainland.
When she glances at Rafe, he dips his chin a nod. “Let’s go,” he says, pulling open the door for her.
She’s not surprised at the gentlemanly traits he exhibits; he may have behaved like an asshole in the past, but he was born and raised on Figure Eight. The families there raise their kids to be the cream of the crop, in every sense of the word.
The bookstore smells like it always does; paper, aged leather, old books. Isla inhales deeply as she smiles politely at the girl behind the counter before heading towards the romance aisle. Glancing over her shoulder, she sees Rafe following after her, sunglasses still on yet a smile tugging on his face the moment she looks at him, and her heart does a silly flip.
They haven’t had a chance to see each other since they kissed at Midsummers two days ago, but they’ve been texting a lot. All of the time. In the midst of hanging out with her friends and helping her parents plan the party, she and Rafe get to know each other a little more and more through their texts. But spending real time with him, that’s what Isla wants, especially if there’s a chance he’ll kiss her again. Because, Goddamn, she can’t stop thinking about that kiss. It has tilted her world on its axis, her skin growing warm just by playing it on a loop in her mind.
The worst part is she can’t even talk to anyone about it; not her sister, not Sarah or Cleo. So for the last two nights, she has been laying in bed, replaying the kiss over and over again in between texting Rafe, a development in her life she didn’t see coming at all.
Isla’s fingers brush along the spines of the books, gaze slipping over them to see if any catch her eye. She’s also well aware of Rafe’s presence, biting back a smile as she pulls out a book with an intriguing title and flips it to read the summary. As she does so, she can feel Rafe’s gaze on her, leaning his shoulder against the shelf with arms crossed over his chest, and the longer she pretends not to notice his stare, the warmer her cheeks get under his eyes.
Not taking her gaze away from the book, she tries to keep her tone casual and indifferent when she asks, “You gonna look around too, or stay here and play bodyguard?”
“The latter,” he says smoothly, unapologetically. “You’ve got a habit of running into trouble.”
The corner of her mouth tugs up, sliding her gaze from the book to his unfairly handsome face. “Must be the Pogue in me.”
Amusement lights up his blue eyes, lips curling up in that boyish smile. There’s no sign of that disdain and disgust that used to appear on his face at the mere mention of Pogues—the fact that it even existed in the first place should be enough to have Isla running away from Rafe. Maybe it’s because it’s not there anymore that has her interest in him deepening. Maybe he’s just a really good actor and pretending he doesn’t care about the Pogue versus Kook stuff anymore. Then again, how can someone flip a switch that quickly?
Oh, she hates this. She hates that just when she’s giving into him, into these feelings that threaten to take over, something pops up that makes doubt creep through. Kind of like hearing JJ’s voice in her head, one of his many speeches about how Pogue are epic and Kooks suck to all hell, despite the fact that Isla, Kie, and Sarah are from Kook families.
“You’ve got the soul of a Pogue, though. So it doesn’t count,” is what JJ always says.
The difference between the two types of people is always there. Rafe was someone who believed in it too, just like JJ. Now he’s here, with her, having kissed her, so have the lines blurred for him?
Instead of responding to her statement directly, Rafe clicks his tongue and Isla blinks when his hands cup her cheeks, his chin dipping to look her in the eyes. “Your mind is spinning. It’s making me dizzy,” he says, making Isla’s lips part with a disbelieving scoff at the fact that he could tell so easily. Now, though, her mind spins with the sensation of his skin against hers. “We can talk when we get to the park, if that’s what you want.”
“Yeah?” she asks, unsure why she’s a little surprised.
His smile is soft. “Yeah.” He nods towards the shelf. “Get what you want. I’m gonna look around, too.”
Isla nods, trying not to focus on the disappointment she feels when his hands fall away from her and he backs away with a smile, before turning the corner to head to another aisle.
Maybe a conversation would help; they’ve talked about random, getting-to-know-you type stuff over texts, which is almost funny given that they’ve known each other their whole lives. She doesn’t want to insult Rafe again the way she had that day at the country club, but Isla’s curiosity is piqued. She hasn’t asked him yet what’s changed, when his feelings for her changed. She knows first hand that guys can be a little vague and touchy when it comes to talking about their feelings, so she’s going to try to word her questions carefully, but she needs to ask them for the sake of the doubt that annoyingly keeps cropping up.
It seems like the two of them have talked about loads of things, except the subject that really matters. Then again, it’s probably better to talk about those things in person, rather than over text.
Isla limits herself to just one book, which is a great feat on her part, and wanders down the aisles in search of Rafe. She finds him in the middle of the science fiction aisle, standing tall with his head bent as he reads the inner jacket of the book in his hands. Isla rolls her bottom lip into her mouth, admiring the afternoon sun shining through the front glass walls of the store and bathing Rafe in a near ethereal glow and, God, this isn’t what she needs—a hot guy reading a book in her favorite store. It sounds like the start of a wet dream.
She slowly makes her way over to him, hugging her book to her chest and grip tightening on it when he turns his head to look at her. “Hey,” he greets. “Good to go?”
Isla dips her chin in a nod. “Yeah.”
Rafe closes the book. “Let’s go.”
They walk to the counter and Isla lets out a quiet exclaim of surprise when Rafe plucks the book out of her hand and puts it on the counter with his, already pulling out his credit in one fell swoop. “Uh, wait,” Isla starts through a laugh, widening her eyes at him as the cashier scans the books. “You don’t have to pay for mine.”
He merely shoots her a look, as though he’s saying come on, now, while handing over his credit card without taking his gaze off of Isla. “I know I don’t have to,” he says. “But I’d like to, if it’s all the same to you.”
Isla’s cheeks warm, biting her bottom lip though it does nothing to keep her from smiling. She finds herself unable to look away—until he glances at her with a ghost of a smirk, and she’s cutting her gaze away with the heat in her cheeks intensifying—and totally missing the way the cashier smiles at the two of them.
Rafe carries the paper bag, the cardboard straps hanging from his fingers as they exit the store and continue to talk in the direction of the park. “Thank you,” Isla says, glancing up at him through her sunglasses as they walk.
His smile is sweet and charming. “Anytime.”
Their hands, hanging at their sides, are inches away, the space in between teasing them to brush together as they make their way down the sidewalk. Isla knows very well how Rafe’s hands feel against her body, her fingers itching to interlock with his, but she keeps the desire at bay as the park comes into view.
With it being the summer and the weather being near perfect, the park is busy with children and families, but Rafe leads her to a spot by a tree that provides a nice amount of shade. “Perfect,” Rafe breathes out as they settle down on the soft grass, the tree trunk thick and wide enough for them both to sit side by side, their backs against it.
The grass tickles against the bare skin of Isla’s legs, exposed thanks to her romper, but it’s a sensation she’s used to. The bark is steady and smooth at her back as she leans against it, her bag resting at her side and legs outstretched in front of her, taking a moment to watch the kids running around chasing each other, their laughter and chatter dancing along the breeze.
Rafe sits beside her, his arm pressing against hers, the warmth from his skin through the light cotton of his shirt seeping into her. For a moment, neither of them say anything, basking in the bluster of their surroundings, until Rafe’s casual tone breaks through their silence. “You think this counts as our second date?”
Isla’s pulse skitters, biting back a smile. She doesn’t look at him, head leaning back against the tree as she answers slowly, “I wouldn’t mind that.” Glancing at him to her right, she sees his slow grin, and Isla’s stomach tumbles with nerves because of the question dancing on her tongue. But instead of overthinking it, she looks up at the green leaves providing them shade and starts, “Can I ask you something?”
Rafe doesn’t seem surprised. He’s expecting her questions, given that he noticed her demeanor at the bookstore. “Shoot,” he says, bringing his right knee up and resting his arm on it.
A breeze blows by, and Isla pauses when the aroma of Rafe’s cologne—and whatever else just makes him, him—reaches her nose. She tries to breathe through it, to keep her mind on track, even if it proves to be a little difficult. Everything about him is distracting. “If we. . . If we do this,” she starts, choosing her words carefully and trying not to stumble over them. Her fingers nervously play with a loose thread at the hem of her romper shorts. “If we keep seeing each other, would it bother you if we kept it lowkey for a while? Just between me and you?” When Rafe turns his head to look at her, Isla doesn’t try to read his expression and instead continues anxiously, “I mean, y’know, unless I’m totally getting ahead of myself and in that case we can totally ignore—”
“Isla,” Rafe cuts her off gently. She presses her lips together, cheeks flushing in embarrassment as she forces herself to meet his gaze, heart thudding a little too harshly. Their arms press together, especially when Rafe leans towards her, and she sees the way his eyes soften as his gaze flickers between hers. “I want to keep seeing you,” he assures, making the breath silently hitch in her throat at the sincerity in his voice, his bright blue eyes. “And I already figured that we’d keep this on the down low, until you’re ready to tell your friends.”
Okay. Wow. Okay. Talking so candidly about them makes her pulse quicken excitedly, her head spin a little, but she pushes on. “And what about you?” she asks, trying not to get distracted by how close he is. “Would you tell your friends about us?” Because that’s what they’re discussing: becoming an us.
Plus, Isla’s not too sure how she feels about Topper and Kelce potentially knowing about her and Rafe, while her own friends are in the dark. Not to mention that she definitely doesn’t trust them to keep their mouths shut and not use this knowledge to taunt her friends, which would only fuck up her telling them about her and Rafe herself. One thing’s for sure, when the time comes, she needs to be the one to tell them. If they find out any other way, the sting of betrayal will be worse than it already will be in general. She’s not ready for that conversation.
Rafe tilts his head at her, the ends of his bangs brushing along his forehead. “I won’t if you don’t want me to,” he tells her.
“Really?” she asks, her eyebrows flicking up. “It wouldn’t bother you, keeping a secret from them?”
He frowns at her, like her question is silly. “I’ll do it for your peace of mind,” he says, and the answer is so simple and casually spoken, yet it knocks the air out of her lungs at the sheer consideration behind them. Almost every conversation they have had so far proves to Isla that there’s more to Rafe Cameron than she ever knew—than he ever showed them. And she wonders, not for the first time, if the asshole, getting-into-fights-with-her-friends Rafe Cameron is just a mask and the one before her is the real one. “It’s no problem, Isla, really.” He sighs, elbow on his knee as he runs his fingers through his hair. “I know you have a lot more to lose than I do, if your friends find out before you think they’re ready to hear about us.”
God, hearing him call them an us does something funny to her heart. Makes it flutter, soar, electrify all at once. She watches him for a moment, the breeze rustling the leaves above them and cooling her warm skin as she admires the sharp line of his jaw, his aristocratic nose, the sweep of his eyelashes—and those lips. Lips she has kissed. Lips whose taste she now knows. Somehow, it all fuels her into asking, “What changed?”
Rafe’s gaze meets her, giving a slight tilt of his head as confusion washes over his handsome features. “What do you mean?”
There’s a certain level of vulnerability that comes with asking the question that dances on the tip of Isla’s tongue. But the conversation has come this far, and Rafe hasn’t made her feel silly or embarrassed for bringing up this topic in general. So Isla allows herself to be a little bit more open, a little more raw as she clarifies, “Between us. What made you change your mind?”
She doesn’t need to be any more specific in that, because she sees the realization dawn on Rafe. He leans back momentarily, a smile touching his lips as his gaze flicks upwards thoughtfully. Isla knows now isn’t the time to admire the sharp line of his jaw, but it’s kind of difficult to look away from, even as her pulse quickens in anticipation of his answer. And the one he gives isn’t what she’s expecting.
“Sarah’s birthday.”
Isla blinks at him a couple of times, eyebrows furrowing together. “Sarah’s birthday?” she repeats slowly, her gaze darting away in thought. “That was, like, three months ago.”
“I know,” Rafe says, looking at her with a small smile.
“We didn’t even—” Isla shakes her head in confusion, trying to make sense of what he said. “I don’t think we even talked that night.”
“We didn’t,” he confirms with a nod as Isla thinks back to Sarah’s birthday. She had had a party at her house, a big one. No different than their regular house parties, but this one included a four tier birthday cake Ward had specially ordered for the birthday girl. Rafe leans his head back against the tree, though it’s tilted towards her, blue eyes locking with her green. “But there was one point where I saw you with Wheezie in her room. The two of you were laying on the floor and coloring, of all things,” he explains with a chuckle that’s both amused and fond. “You looked so relaxed and I don’t know. It wasn’t a bolt of lightning or anything. I just. .  . Looked at you, and something changed. A switch flipped. It was that simple.”
Isla stares at him in disbelief, lips parted slightly as her mind flashes back to that night. She remembered getting a headache at one point during the party, the alcohol and pounding music only making it worse. But she hadn’t wanted to leave her best friend’s party, especially when Sarah hadn’t even cut the cake yet. So Isla had sought refuge somewhere, and somehow ended up upstairs and came across Wheezie.
The younger girl, as much as she wanted to be involved in her older siblings’ lives, wasn’t too curious about the party. Wheezie had been laying on her stomach on the floor of her bedroom, several of those adult cozy coloring books around her, along with markers. She had taken one look at Isla’s weary expression and invited her to join, and that’s how Isla had ended up, for about forty minutes, coloring with Wheezie while the party raged on in the rest of the house. She hadn’t, at one point, ever noticed Rafe nearby, so his revelation is more than a little shocking.
And for that to be such a significant moment for him without her even realizing it. . . She hadn’t really interacted with Rafe much—if at all—until weeks later when she had run into him that night her car broke down. He never gave any kind of indication that he had any sort of feelings for her that night. Or, well, maybe the fact that he helped her out was enough of a sign, and she just hadn’t connected the dots. Though, to be fair, Isla had no idea there were any dots to connect at the time.
“Wow,” is what she says, lamely, and it makes her cheeks flush when she sees Rafe’s eyebrows flick up in amusement. Isla clears her throat, looking away and at the park ahead, watching some kids run around. “That. . . Was unexpected.”
His smile widens, devastatingly handsome with those dimples, as sunlight peeks through the leaves and branches, bathing his face in strips of bright golden rays. Rafe’s voice is nothing but playful as he says, “Sorry it’s not as dramatic as your romance books.”
Her cheeks heat even more as she gives his arm a shove, pulling a laugh from him. “Shut up,” Isla mumbles, though a short chuckle escapes her, too. “I’m just surprised that’s all it took. After, you know, years of us not even being friends.”
“Life’s real funny that way, I’d say,” he hums. Head still lolling her way, he arches a brow and asks, “What about you? Because I know for a fact it took you longer than it did me.”
Isla hums in affirmation, not seeing any reason to lie. “Honestly?” she starts, pulling both of her legs up and wrapping her arms around them as she turns her head to look at him. “After our date.” Isla rests her cheek on the top of her knees, a smile pulling at her cheeks as their eyes meet once more. “You kind of had me hooked right then and there.” Her smile widens, some of her shyness melting away when Rafe’s gaze softens. “No one has ever gone through that much trouble on a date for me.”
His smile shifts, maybe a little awed, and his hand reaches out to the cup the back of her head. Rafe dips his own head, closer to hers, and says, “It wasn’t any trouble at all, Isla.” She almost sighs at the way he speaks her name, but stops herself. Mostly because she’s dazed by the way his eyes shine bright, looking into hers. “These dates are, uh—” He pauses to release a soft laugh, almost sounding nervous, as Isla watches him. “They’re something I hope can happen often.”
This time, Isla does let out a breath, the corners of her mouth tipping up. “Me too,” she confesses quietly. Her throat works as she feels his fingers threading through her hair, to do nothing but stay there, and she finds herself asking, “Do you think we’ll be able to? I mean, if we’re keeping this quiet, how do we—”
“We’ll figure it out,” Rafe assures, hinting at a dimple when he smiles slightly. She feels herself relax a bit when she feels his thumb stroke her head.
“Really?” she asks, lifting her head as her forehead creases in worry. “Because between our friends and anyone else who’ll see us and spill it to our friends before we’re ready to tell them, hiding it might. . .” Isla exhales sharply through her nose, allowing herself to be vulnerable once again. “I don’t want you to regret it.”
Rafe’s eyebrows furrow together, pulling back slightly at her words. She’s half afraid that she insulted him—again—but Rafe just shakes his head. He shifts so he’s not up against the tree anymore, sitting to face her with his legs crossed. “Isla,” he starts, his voice low but serious. “I won’t regret anything, as long as we’re together. I don’t care if we have to hide our relationship, no matter how long. I know we’ll make it work.”
Isla gently tugs her bottom lip into her mouth, eyes flickering between his, even as his briefly dips to her mouth. His words do fill her with relief, some of the tension leaving her body. There’s genuine determination in his blue eyes and her throat locks as she realizes that he’s serious about the two of them. The butterflies return to her stomach, and it pushes her to smile a little as she says, “So we’re in a relationship?”
He blinks and she swears pink dusts his cheeks and in that moment, Isla realizes that Rafe Cameron blushing is a sight that will be ingrained in her mind—and a sight she will try to recreate as often as she can. “I, uh—” Rafe stumbles over his words and Isla doesn’t help him out, her smile only growing and eyebrows flicking up in teasing expectation. “That’s not—” He laughs, letting go of her and rubbing the back of his neck. “That’s not how I wanted to, like, ask you.”
Isla shifts, the butterflies in her stomach intensifying so she’s sitting to face him, too, crossing her legs. Excitement shoots through her, warming her from the inside out, as strands of hair brush across her face with the breeze. “Ask me what?” she prompts, tucking the hair behind her ear.
Rafe loosens a breath, tilting his head back and giving Isla a pretty view of the column of his neck. “I was going to take you out a couple of more times before I asked you.”
She laughs, feeling more and more relaxed by the second, despite her fluttering stomach. “Such a gentleman,” she says playfully. “Fine. If you wanna wait, then we can wait.”
Rafe straightens his head, shooting her a bemused look. “Thanks,” he drolls, making her laugh again. It brings a smile to his face, too.
“But do I have to wait for more dates for you to kiss me again?” Isla asks with a tilt of her head and a burst of confidence, even as her cheeks warm. She’s not always as confident as her sister, since her shyness often comes out, but sometimes she’ll have her moments—like right now. Like being bold enough to let him know that she wants him to kiss her again. Because, Goddamn, she’s been thinking of their kiss since Midsummers.
Rafe’s gaze snaps to hers, briefly looking surprised before his lips curl up in a boyish grin. Her stomach dips when his fingers lightly grasp her chin as he leans towards her, her pulse quickening the closer he gets. “Absolutely not,” he says, his voice dropping to a toe curling murmur until the distance between them disappears and his lips finally meet hers.
Her heart sighs the moment he kisses her, Isla’s eyes fluttering shut as she leans into the kiss, Rafe’s fingers sliding from her chin to cup her cheek. His lips are already familiar to her, the kiss languid despite Isla’s racing pulse as Rafe uses his gentle grip on her face to tilt her head the way he wants, deepening the kiss with his tongue tracing the seam of her lips. Isla parts them and Rafe slides his tongue inside her mouth to tease hers.
Electricity shoots through her veins, her own hands gripping his thighs in hopes of stopping herself from climbing onto his lap. They were in public, after all, with kids around, even as Rafe tugs at her bottom lip with his teeth in a way that makes heat pool in her panties. And they can’t go further than this, right now, and that fucking sucks. “Rafe,” she murmurs against his lips—a plea and apology at the same time.
“I know, baby,” he says, the kiss slowly breaking as he brushes his nose alongside hers. “Just missed you.”
She can’t help but grin, slightly hooded eyes looking at him fondly. “Since Midsummers?”
“Hell yeah,” he says with a rough chuckle. His hand is still on her cheek, his head tilting and only inches between them as his softened eyes gaze at her. “You have no idea how often you’re on my mind.”
Her heart jumps, his smile growing as she honestly says, “Feeling is mutual.”

As always, if you see any typos, no you didn't :^)
---
The first time Steve got expelled, his father picked him up from school while his mother stayed to chat with the principal. He was twelve at the time, confused about what he'd done wrong, and feeling validated by his father's ecstatic praise of his initiative.
He'd wound up in Grandmama's kitchen, sitting cross-legged on the island while Wednesday added spider legs to a mixing bowl. Fester had gone off the find Gomez after telling Wednesday to keep an eye on Steve. She'd immediately turned away after Fester left the room.
"So," she said, idly stirring, "you've been expelled. What for?"
"I brought rattlesnakes to class."
"Why?"
"We were learning about snakes. I thought the teacher would appreciate live examples."
"How many?"
"Twenty seven. One for each student."
"Did they bite anyone?"
"No," Steve said, frowning and not bothering to conceal his disappointment at the fact.
"That's a shame."
Steve nodded, watching Wednesday for a few minutes before asking, "What are you making?"
"A cake for Joel."
"Why?"
"He insists on celebrating our anniversary."
"What kind is it?"
"Cinnamon with walnuts."
Steve thought for a moment, trying to figure out why that specific combination sounded familiar. Finally, he said, "I thought Joel was allergic to those."
"He is allergic to many things," Wednesday said, looking over her shoulder to smirk at Steve. "But especially cinnamon and walnuts."
"How come you're making it then?"
"To make sure he remembers how breathless I made him when we first met."
Steve thought that might be one of the most romantic things he's ever heard. He carefully filed the idea away in the back of his mind, hoping he'd one day find someone with an allergy severe enough to use it.
-------------------------
Eddie can't stop looking at Steve's parents, his gaze moving between the two as he tries to figure out how the fuck they ended up together. He feels like someone is about to jump out and tell him he's on a prank show. What else could describe the sheer polar opposite natures of Steve's parents?
Debbie looks exactly like the kind of woman who'd live in a Barbie Dream House: blonde, perfect makeup, pastel dress, the refined air that just hovers around her. Fester, however, looks like he belongs next door. Eddie had noticed how pale he was the first time they met, but he's positively corpse-like now that Steve and Debbie are around for comparison.
He'd almost believe Steve wasn't their child if not for the fact that Eddie can see every way he is. Steve might look like Debbie on the outside, but he's undoubtedly an Addams on the inside. He has Debbie's fashion sense and air of elegance. his eyes get the same crazed light sometimes that Fester's do when Debbie speaks, and the words they speak are similar.
"Eddie," Debbie says, snapping him out of his thoughts. At some point, he'd started staring at Steve, and he feels his cheeks flush at getting caught. "Steve tells me you play guitar. Did you recently learn?"
Oh. Eddie feels his shoulders relax some at the familiar topic. "My mom taught me when I was younger. She used to play for me whenever I had nightmares."
"She doesn't play for you anymore?" Debbie asks, spearing a piece of chicken with her fork.
"Oh, uh, she died a few years ago," Eddie says, smiling apologetically for such a downer of a topic. "Cancer, you know."
"That must have been excruciating," Steve says, a soft sigh accompanying his words, and Eddie isn't sure if he's sympathetic or jealous.
Debbie nods as she inspects her chicken closely before putting it in her mouth, her eyes narrowing slightly as she chews. "I said no poisoning the food, dear," she says, looking at Fester with a somewhat strained smile.
"Aww, it's just a nightshade reduction, Mother. We didn't even put any on Eddie's plate," Steve says.
Now that Eddie is actually paying attention, he realizes the dark sauce drizzled across their chicken is missing from his own. "Why don't I have any?" he asks, figuring it can't really be a nightshade sauce.
"You haven't worked your way up to nightshade yet," Fester explains, his eyes lighting up as he adds, "But don't worry! We're getting you started with just a dash of chalk in your rice."
Eddie blinks, glancing down at the half-eaten rice on his plate. He didn't notice anything weird about it, so maybe they're joking. But then he hears Debbie's put-upon sigh. "Fester, dear?"
"Yes, Pumpkin?"
"I'd make you sleep in the doghouse, but you'd just enjoy it."
"Eddie doesn't mind, I'm sure," Steve says, looking at Eddie with a smile that makes his heart speed up and his palms sweat. "It's okay if you do, though. Just be honest."
"I don't mind," Eddie replies, wondering where the words come from. If he'd been anywhere else, with anyone else, he'd definitely be losing his mind over a light poisoning. Somehow, though, he can't bring himself to be that upset about it. Maybe, if he tries hard enough, he'll even build enough of an immunity to kiss Steve when he's wearing that raspberry lip gloss.
The blinding smile he gets in return eases any lingering doubts he might have. Steve leans close enough for their shoulders to brush, Eddie's skin tingling through the fabric of his sleeve. "We Addams are experts at acclimating people to poisons. You'll be enjoying nightshade in no time," he says, his voice light and reassuring like Eddie was somehow impatient.
And then, without thinking, Eddie's eyes glance down at Steve's lips. They have a suspicious sheen to them, and Eddie's only half-certain he's not imagining the artificial raspberry scent. "What, uh, what about raspberries?" he asks, the words tumbling out before he can stop them.
If anything, Steve's smile just gets wider. "I'm sure we can figure something out," he replies, his tongue briefly swiping across his bottom lip.
Eddie looks away and grabs his glass, gulping down half the water inside before he says anything monumentally stupid in front of Steve's parents.
"Steve, stop torturing Eddie. You know that's dessert conversation," Debbie says, her voice light and breezy.
Steve sighs and pulls away. "Sorry," he says, not looking the least bit apologetic at all. In fact, he even glances at Eddie again and smiles, eyebrows raised slightly, and Eddie thinks he's about to die of thirst.
"Eddie," Fester says, mercifully giving him a reason to look away from Steve and try to gain some semblance of chill. "What are your interests?" Fester glances at Debbie, practically preening when she smiles and offers him a subtle, approving nod.
"Well, uh, music. I like heavy metal and play in a band. Dungeons and Dragons, too. I play that with my friends."
"Dungeons, you say?" Fester asks, suddenly looking more invested in the conversation. "What's your favorite kind? I'm partial to the French Revolution era dungeons myself."
"You just like the guillotines, Father," Steve says.
"Now that's an instrument of death. Nothing inspires fear like the glint of the blade in the sun, don't you think, Pumpkin?"
"Yes, dear, but you know I'm partial to electric chairs myself."
Steve leans closer again and says, "Mother nearly killed Father's family with electric chairs, you know."
"A splendid attempt it was," Fester adds, looking over with a bright smile.
Eddie glances between all of them, taking in their expressions and trying to figure out if they're being serious. He watches Debbie drag a carrot through dark sauce on her plate; he briefly looks into Fester's eyes and sees the manic joy lying in them; his heart speeds up at Steve's soft and contented smile. Eddie then glances around the dining room. He notes the shotgun placed on the wall with a little plaque beneath that reads "Attempt 12" in flourishing cursive. He looks at the window and sees the black, molded wood of the house next door. He thinks of Nox the spider and Kas the taxidermy rat and the ornate dagger and everything else he's found in his locker.
And he realizes something.
They're serious. They're all completely serious about everything. Steve and Fester weren't joking that first time he came over and they talked about the oven being big enough to fit him and a roast. Steve really has fought all of his siblings and was gifted a trident at his bar mitzvah. Pubert doesn't protect his kidneys.
Okay that last one maybe isn't as important, but it's one Eddie savors nonetheless.
He has two options here. One, he gets the hell out of dodge, makes some strained excuse to leave after dinner and avoids Steve in the hallways and hopes he doesn't wake up buried alive. Two, he embraces it, starts eating a little chalk with every meal, and lets Steve introduce him to whatever freaky shit will earn him another blinding smile.
"So, how did you two meet?" Eddie asks, looking at Fester and Debbie with a smile as he shovels more rice onto his fork.
-------------------------
"I approve."
Steve blinks, and then his mother's words process, and he stands a little straighter. "That's good. Though, I would've been happy to follow in Romeo and Juliet's footsteps if you hadn't."
"You wouldn't even need poison," Fester says, his voice ringing from the kitchen as Steve helps his mother gather up dessert plates. "Just wear the raspberry stuff."
"No star-crossed suicides for you, mister," Debbie says, playfully tapping her finger against Steve's forehead. "Anyway, he's a very nice young man, and he adapted rather quick, don't you think?"
"He thought it was a joke before, but he doesn't think that now. And he didn't run away screaming!"
"Not that you would've minded, I suspect."
"Well, no," Steve agrees, flashing a grin as he puts the plates on the counter next to his father. He then pulls down Tupperware, ready to pack up the leftover chicken and rice.
"He seems like a tough nut to crack, but he's nearly there," Debbie says, leaning against the island with a thoughtful look. "I mean, he seemed ready to do whatever you said at the dinner table."
"Then why hasn't he done anything? Am I being too obvious? Should I play hot and cold?"
"No, I don't think that would work here."
"Just tell him," Fester suddenly says, looking at Steve as he washes a plate. "Wouldn't that be best?"
"Would it?" Steve asks.
Before Debbie can do more than snort derisively, Fester nods. "Just think about it, son. You tell him, but leave it all up to Eddie after that. He'll torture himself trying to build up the courage to even hold your hand, especially if you catch him when he's midway."
Steve can't help the way he lights up at the thought. "That's a great idea! Thanks, Father. I'm gonna go plan my confession right now," he says, disappearing from the kitchen not a moment later.
"When did you get so good at this?" Debbie asks, a little pride tinging her words. When Fester lights up, she decides to reward him that night with an extra ten minutes of cuddling before bed.

A Second Chance
Viktor Hargreeves X Fem!Reader
Viktor reconnects with one of his past lovers
A/N: I love Elliot page, and I think it is a CRIME that there isn't more Viktor fics out there. This is in the timeline of season 4 which I WILL rewrite bc idk wtf I watched but it wasn't Tua.
(Y/N will be used but won't be described)
Tumblr media
"Viktor has officially ran through every woman in the town" A guy announced in the bar making everyone laugh. "Okay that's enough" Viktor said taking the keys a woman had slammed on the counter. Viktor walked back behind the counter to pick up the ringing phone "What is it Luther-" Luther's words faded as he looked at the entrance to see a woman walking in. The woman walked up to the bar leaning on the counter, watching Viktor put the phone away without saying goodbye.
"Hi Viktor" "Hi Y/N"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10 months earlier
"That's absolutely ridiculous V" Y/N laughed watching Viktor make breakfast. "I'm being so serious; we went back in time" Viktor giggled. Y/N took bacon from the pan "Okay so where are your so-called powers" Viktor rolled his eyes "I told you we lost them" "You lost them after coming out of a rich hotel with a killer bodyguard" Y/N busted out laughing realizing how stupid it all sounded. "It's not funny" Viktor wrapped his arms around her waist pulling her closer. "But it kind of is" She placed her hands on his cheeks.
They stayed like that for a moment, just enjoying being in each others arms. "So what else did your powers do" Y/N asked playing with his necklace "It was like energy blasts, vibrations and stuff" Viktor replied. A smirk grew on Y/N's face "Did your hands vibrate too" Viktor looked at her confused then sighed when he realized that she was thinking of "You're so annoying"
"You know you love me" "I do"
"I can't do this anymore" Viktor said looking at his feet. "Come on, it's just a burger. You can finish it" Y/N giggled. Viktor looked at the woman in front of him. She was everything Viktor could wish for. She was perfect. Too perfect. It scared him. "I mean i can’t do... This." He gestured toward him and Y/N.
"Are you breaking up wit-" "Yes" Viktor interrupted. "Why? I thought we were okay, no actually. I thought we were great" Y/N stared trying to understand where they went wrong or what she could of done to make Viktor not love her anymore. Viktor had no explanation other than he was scared of falling in love with her. Even though he already has. "It's just.. too complicated. Your parents already don't like me and i have to run the bar, we barely even see each other." Viktor lied looking at his plate. Y/N had made them burgers and cake because of the success of the bar. And for their 5 month anniversary.
Y/N knew he was lying.
"I bring you lunch every day at the bar and I'm always awake when you come back. I even offered to help out. YOU were the one that said no." Tears started to fill her eyes trying to find an answer in Viktor's. He refused to look at her. Like she no longer mattered. "V. I've told you so many times that I don't care what my parents think. Or anyone else. It's my life, I choose what I do, and I can love who I want." Viktor needed to leave. He knew if he had looked at her everything would go wrong. Viktor headed for the door of Y/N apartment stopped when he heard Y/N's final words.
"Viktor, I want to love you... because I do but you- You have to let me love you."
Viktor left leaving Y/N with confusion and tears.
A/N: sooo.. should i delete myself and my page or keep going...🌚 PLEASE tell me what you think i genuinely don't mind advice as long as it's respectful.
