UrbanCampsite settles in the newest part of Amsterdam, the Centrumeiland of IJburg, surrounded by the IJ lake with a view of island Pampus and the village Durgerdam. UrbanCampsite is looking to attract a wide scaled audience to explore the Centrumeiland, and to change their vision and attitude towards the place. This goal is achieved by creating an outdoor exhibition, extraordinary sleeping accommodations created by a variety of artists and architects transforming recyclable materials, seen as garbage by most, into functional bedrooms, an exciting landscape, workshops and performances.

15 Works of Art…to Camp in
Where is the craziest place you have ever slept? Maybe, in true chic nomad fashion, you have spent an evening in a hanging tent like the Treehouse by Boomhuttenfest above. Or, maybe you have adventured to sleep in one of these cool tents. However, we are willing to bet that you have never imagined sleeping in a gigantic purple sperm or a mobile closet in the woods…until now. If this sounds like a good time, then the Urban Campsite is perfect for you. It was dreamed up by Annette van Driel and Francis Nijenhuis and features 15 art installations to camp in.
Polaris M is a mobile home made out of an old polyster silo. Admit it - you have always wanted to sleep inside of a drain pipe. This futuristic space can be used as a spare office, eating spot, or even sleeping quarters.
With folded marquis and floors, the floor space in the Markies by Eduard Bohtlingk can be tripled once arrived at its destination. It reminds us a little of this classy camper.
X-Ray Camping by Rob Swere. It would be wonderful to camp here in the rain and watch the drops come down while staying dry inside.
The cleverly named Darwin by Atelier van Lieshout. According to the artist, Darwin implies “power, status, expansion and reproduction”. Would you feel powerful and important sleeping in this giant purple sperm?
At first the Caravan by Kevin van Braak looks like an ordinary camper van. But, wait! The clever design folds out into its own mini park for your enjoyment. Bring the party with you, wherever you go.
Dream of a Closet by Jenske Dijkhuis is an upscaled closet based on a 17th century Dutch “kuif-kast”.
The campsite is ocated in the Vliegenbos campsite in Amsterdam, just minutes away from the Red Light District in Amsterdam. This unique experience runs through September 30, 2013. You can reserve a spot here.
