Opening on June 2… It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby.
Fifty years have passed since the death of artist and cultural icon, Pablo Picasso. He’s a mainstay of the modernist art historical canon and a household name whose artwork sells for record prices, but what does his legacy look like in 2023 through a contemporary lens? A critical lens? A feminist lens?
Using their incisive humor, comedian Hannah Gadsby worked with our curators, Lisa Small and Catherine Morris, to consider Picasso’s work through the aforementioned lenses in It’s Pablo-matic. The exhibition includes nearly 100 works including pieces by Picasso and selections by twentieth- and twenty-first-century feminist artists such as Dindga McCannon, Betty Tompkins, and Kaleta Doolin. Highlighting Gadsby’s voice alongside those of many of the included artists, the exhibition reckons with complex questions around misogyny, creativity, the art-historical canon, and who gets to be a “genius.”

Kristoff from Frozen II has been lauded as a feminist icon, I've noticed. That's a bit of a stretch. He revealed genuine emotion, offered mutual support, and expressed love for Anna. That's standard shit. Icons are next level.
Reminds me of something Hannah Gadsby said in her show, Douglas. She said that to achieve sainthood, Saint Bernard only had to put in minimal fucking effort. Another saint, a woman, had to learn the cello, but all Bernard had to do was have a wet dream where Mother Mary lactated on his face.
My point is, hold men to a higher standard. Kristoff is a role model, not an icon. He did what the situation demanded, what any loving partner should do. There's probably not more he could've done to become an icon in that film, given he was a supporting character. But in general, more is required to make one a feminist icon.

9, 13, and 16 for the questions, please!
9. A book that was better than you expected it to be The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore - I'd tried their books in the past and couldn't get into them but this once intrigued me, being a Snow Queen retelling, and it just suited me so well. I'm gonna try more of their books in 2023!
13. The funniest book you read this year 10 Steps to Nanette by Hannah Gadsby, no question. love that lady
16. A book you already want to reread ooh ok I'm not much of a re-reader but maybe Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian. a very satisfying standalone fantasy novel featuring characters from Arthurian legend, centred around the Lady of Shallot ^.^
thank you <3
send me a number 1-40 for end of year book asks!

“The Favourite” scores the top spot at the Dorian Awards
This week, GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (of which I am a proud member) announced their annual Dorian Awards for excellence in film and television. It is awards season after all, and this list of winners and nominees were solely curated by queer, trans and non-binary writers and critics who work in the entertainment media world. The acclaimed 1700s lesbian love triangle film, The Favourite, took the top prize as did its star, Olivia Colman. A Golden Globe and a Dorian? Surely an Oscar is next. LGBTQ Film of the year went to the Melissa McCarthy helmed, Can You Ever Forgive Me? which is based on the life of lesbian writer and sometimes con artist, Lee Israel. Just like the Globes, Sandra Oh picked up a Dorian for her excellent work in Killing Eve, the cat and mouse, will they or won’t they, thriller from BBC America. The delightfully delicious A Simple Favor, starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, picked up the Campy Flick of the Year award. Frankly, Lively’s collection of tuxes in the film deserve their own award. The Wilde Wit of the Year award, “which honors a performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse” went to comedian Hannah Gadsby, whose stand-up Netflix special, Nanette, was a real game-changer.
