So you saw fell in love with Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon and now you want her on your screen as much as possible? Iā€™m here to help.
Tumblr media
Certain Women directed by Kelly Reichardt
This was the first time I saw Lily Gladstone in anything and I screamed about her specifically for days. The film is segmented into three stories about women living in the northwestern plains region of the US. All three segments are good, but Lily Gladstoneā€™s is by far my favorite. She plays a ranch hand who starts sitting in on a night school law class when she develops a crush on the teacher, played by (bonus!) Kristen Stewart.
Certain Women is streaming on The Criterion Channel, AMC+, and Kanopy (Kanopy is free!). It is also available to rent on the major platforms.
Tumblr media
The Unknown Country directed by Morrisa Maltz
This movie is stunning. Think Nomadland but even more stripped down. Lily Gladstone plays a character on a roadtrip to reunite with her estranged family after the death of her grandmother. Along the way she tries to learn more about who her grandmother was in life and reconnect with her memory. A lot of the film is unscripted, and breathtaking shots of the western US landscape punctuate the brief encounters she has at each stop on her journey.
The Unknown Country is available to rent on the major platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon, and YouTube.
Tumblr media
Quantum Cowboys directed by Geoff Marslett
This oneā€™s for the multiverse fans. A really fun romp that might make your head hurt if you think about it too hard. Lily Gladstone plays a character in the 1870ā€™s southwest who encounters a pair of travelers stuck in a time loop (sort of). She enlists their help (sort of) in a plan to recover land that was taken from her and in return helps them in their attempt to break their cycle. Most of the film is rotoscope animation, so itā€™s a completely different type of a performance from Lily Gladstone. I had the extraordinary luck of meeting her at a festival screening last year and they said it was such a fun deviation from their usual hyper realistic work.
Quantum Cowboys is available to rent on major platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon, and YouTube.
Tumblr media
Fancy Dance directed by Erica Tremblay
The most recent Lily Gladstone film to blow me away, and maybe my favorite film of 2023. Lily Gladstone plays a character who has been trying to find her missing sister while simultaneously providing care for her sisterā€™s daughter. When it appears she may lose custody, the two hit the road to search for the teenā€™s mother. Itā€™s sad and sweet and beautiful. I have to warn that the subject matter is heavy and all too real but thatā€™s why itā€™s an important story. Itā€™s about something that is so pervasive, yet people outside of the community affected turn a blind eye to it.
Fancy Dance can be seen in select theaters and is now streaming on Apple TV+. Erica Tremblay previously directed Lily Gladstone in the short film Little Chief, which can be found on Vimeo.

Summary:
One night, a monkey is born from a stone atop a tall mountain and disturbs the Jade Emperor. He gives the order to eliminate the cub, but Buddha appears before him and tells him to let him find his purpose. Monkey finds a troop of other monkeys, but his unruly nature keeps him from fitting in. One of his escapades causes a feared demon to pounce from his mountain lair and grab one of the troop's cubs for food; as a result, Monkey is banished.
To prove his worth, he trains to fight the demon. After many years, when he deems himself ready, he confronts the demon, but his training proves ineffective, and another cub is snatched. To fetch a more suitable weapon, Monkey dives into the sea realm of the Dragon King, who is about to use a glowing column to eradicate all life on the world's surface. Communicating with the column, Monkey turns it into a staff and escapes. Monkey returns to the demon's lair, defeats him, and rescues the cub. Prompted by the grateful troop, he crowns himself King of the Monkeys, but the troop's elder cautions that his staff should only be used by the gods, so the new Monkey King decides to kill 100 demons, thus gaining the right to become a god.
Eventually, he comes to a village terrorized by the Red Girl. With the endorsement of a girl named Lin, Monkey King defeats Red Girl, but the Dragon King arrives during the victory celebration to reclaim his prized weapon. After fighting him, Monkey King leaves the village; Lin, pledging herself as his assistant, tags along, even though he treats her condescendingly. Unknown to him, Lin is helping the Dragon King reclaim the staff in return for saving her drought-stricken village.
In a graveyard, Monkey King opens a portal to Hell to get to the Archive of Souls and strike his name off his Scroll of Life and Death, thus gaining immortality. King Yama, the ruler and chief judge of Hell, recognizes them as outsiders and fights them. Monkey King succeeds in erasing his name, but is only made ageless. He steals Yama's Book of Everlasting Life and learns he must eat a peach from the Orchard of Everlasting Life to gain full immortality. The Dragon King subtly guides Monkey King and Lin to a peach tree laced with an intoxicating poison, but ends up getting fed one himself, foiling the plan.
After realizing the peaches are fake, Monkey King learns from the book that Wangmu, the divine Queen Mother, brews an immortality elixir for the gods. He and Lin infiltrate the Jade Palace's pharmacy to create a sample of the elixir. Wangmu catches them in the act, but Monkey King consumes the potion, thus becoming fully immortal. Although Lin has several chances to steal the staff, she repeatedly returns to help Monkey King, who also demonstrates that despite his rude behavior, he cares about her too. Monkey King and Lin flee the Heavens, and in a following heart-to-heart, Lin admits that she longs to make a difference in the world and tries encouraging Monkey King to do the same.
When Monkey King remains aloof and boisterous, Lin outwits him and delivers the staff to the Dragon King. The Dragon King reneges on his deal and prepares to drown the world in a mega-storm, but Monkey King challenges and attacks him. Realizing her mistake, Lin enables Monkey King to beat the Dragon King, but Monkey King becomes power-drunk, and Buddha prepares to intervene. Wanting to give Monkey King another chance, Lin is allowed to act as Buddha's voice and challenges Monkey King to leap off Buddha's hand to win rulership over Heaven, or else suffer a period of penance. Monkey King fails and is imprisoned in a mountain. Before the mountain is fully closed off, Lin is allowed to say goodbye to Monkey King, who finally admits how important Lin has become to him. She leaves him his staff for company.
Five hundred years later, Monkey King is freed from his prison by a monk, a pig, and a river spirit at Buddha's behest. They invite him to join them on a journey to the West, to which he over-happily agrees.

Miami Film Fest: Sebastian Stan Set for Precious Gem Award and Live ā€˜Awards Chatterā€™ Pod

Sebastian Stan, a best actor contender this awards season for two performances that have brought him widespread acclaim ā€” he plays a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice and a man with neurofibromatosis who undergoes facial reconstructive surgery in A Different Man ā€” will receive the Precious Gem Award at the Miami Dade Collegeā€™s Miami Film Festival GEMS event, the fest announced on Monday.
Stan, 42, will be celebrated at an event that will kick off on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 5pm EST, at MDC Wolfson Auditorium in downtown Miami. To begin with, he will sit down with yours truly for a career-retrospective conversation that will be recorded for subsequent posting as an episode of The Hollywood Reporterā€™s Awards Chatter podcast. Then, the fest will present him with his award.
The Precious Gem Award is the festivalā€™s signature award, reserved for ā€œone-of-a-kind artists whose contributions to cinema are lasting and unforgettable.ā€ Past recipients include Pedro AlmodĆ³var, PenĆ©lope Cruz, Isabelle Huppert, Rita Moreno, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Patricia Clarkson.
ā€œWe are thrilled to honor Sebastian Stan with our prestigious Precious Gem Award to celebrate his impressive acting achievements, including his transformative performances in this yearā€™s The Apprentice and A Different Man,ā€ Lauren Cohen, the festā€™s programming director, said in a statement. ā€œWeā€™re also excited to partner with The Hollywood Reporter to bring Scott Feinberg and the celebrated Awards Chatter podcast to Miami.ā€
Stan is perhaps best known for playing Bucky Barnes in seven beloved Marvel films: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019). He has also done additional standout work in films such as I, Tonya (2017), Destroyer (2018) and Dumb Money (2023), and received a Critics Choice Award nomination for the limited series Political Animals (2012) and an Emmy nomination for the limited series Pam & Tommy (2022).
For A Different Man, which he also exexcutive produced, he was awarded the Silver Bear for best leading performance at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
This yearā€™s Miami Film Festival GEMS event will run Oct. 30-Nov. 3.

Fantasia's All Abuzz with David Allen's The Primevals, A Love Letter to More Than The Land of the Lost
Fans of the classic #pulpfiction stylings of those 50s era films will love The Primevals, and we got a review! Hopefully after @FantasiaFest, it'll get more screenings at other film festivals than just be another direct to video release.
The Primevals is more than a love letter to the pulps of yesteryears. Here, the long production history must be noted before I can go into the review. Back in the late 60s, David Allen (who did the animation in Young Sherlock Holmes and Ghostbusters II) came up with the idea, and this stop-motion animator turned filmmaker had a lot of wonderful ideas which were ahead of its time. Itā€™s tough toā€¦

tagged by the amazing @illgiveyouahint thank you!!!
I didn't manage to watch as many films as I generally like to, and not much foreign stuff unfortunately :(( (I've been focusing on watching films on my ever growing watch list plus various short films I manage to stumble across!)
It was hard to narrow it down to just 9 ngl lol these were just the ones I think had the biggest emotional impact on me?
A Field In England (2013) dir. Ben Wheatley
Joy Street (1995) dir. Suzan Pitt (this is a short animated film, Suzan has a bunch of them which I watched back in March and they're honestly all incredible!!!)
Withnail & I (1987) dir. Bruce Robinson
An Adventure In Space And Time (2013) dir. Terry McDonough
Candyman (1992) dir. Bernard Rose
The Elephant Man (1980) dir. David Lynch
Saving Face (2004) dir. Alice Wu
Minotaur (1999) dir. Daniel Sousa (this is a short film someone mentioned on my letterboxd poll about least seen films btw!)
The Wicker Man (1973) dir. Robin Hardy
Special mentions (for films that came out 2023/2024 that I loved):
Bottoms (2023) dir. Emma Seligman
The Passenger (2023) dir. Carter Smith (not the best film BUT it did change my brain chemistry for a couple months lol)
Festival Of Slaps (2023) dir. Abdou Cisse (absolutely amazing short film that I'd HIGHLY recommend!)
Identiteaze (2024) dir. Jessie Earl (aka Jessie Gender on youtube! I really hope she gets to make more films tbh cos this was so queer and so delightful!)
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (2024) dir. Nick Park & Merlin Crossingham
Tagging (no pressure ofc!): @trans-elrond @micamicster @rainbowconvection @silverview @dollopheadsandclotpoles @lapis-lazuliie @suburbanrot @coquelicoq @wintersoulwitch & honestly anyone else who wants to do it!!
