i’ve seen a lot of posts talking about nimona’s queer messages which is great! but ive not seen as many posts talking analyzing how both ballister and ambrosius were changed to be asian, which is a shame because i genuinely think its one of the most important parts of the film! a huge part of it is a deconstruction of the model minority myth and respectability politics, both of which are big issues in the asian american community. both of them represent each side of the spectrum, with ambrosius expected to be superhuman with very little support and ballister being seen as less than human, no matter how hard he tries- a monster.
ambrosius (who is now east asian, like his voice actor eugene lee yang, who is korean with chinese and japanese ancestry), despite being in a seemingly powerful position as head of the knights and a descendant of gloreth, he isn’t really given the kind of support that this position needs- he’s constantly undermined and belittled by todd, the face of the other knights, and when asked about his emotional state by the director, represses his emotions rather than talk to her about his true feelings. this is very similar to how asian american students in schools aren’t given the support they need academically by teachers and administration, as the model minority myth leads to them being perceived as more intelligent and competent than their fellow students and therefore not needing support. he’s also held to a higher standard than any of the other knights, being immediately placed into a position of power despite just being knighted, again a reflection of the model minority myth, since asian americans are held to higher standards unfairly. despite being technically better off than ballister, he has no support, no friends, no way to seek help for his problems, and, just like ballister, is immediately thrown away the moment the director thinks he’s served his use.
ballister is now pakistani, like his voice actor riz ahmed (no, not like pedro pascal. where did this come from lol), and i’d go as far as to say that he is also, if not explicitly muslim, heavily muslim coded as well. he’s framed as a terrorist by the white, christian institution, and from then on, it doesn’t matter how good he tries to be- everyone else sees him as a monster. he’s also from a lower socioeconomic class than ambrosius and the rest of the knights- while this is initially used to frame him as a success story, after he’s framed, it’s used to cast suspicion on him. almost immediately he’s othered, with posters casting him as a foreign invader sent to destabilize the city, much in the same way that muslim immigrants are seen in real life. even when he tries to be peaceful and good, it’s always twisted so that he’s the monster of the story. while ambrosius is held to too high of a standard, ballister will never be enough for the institution to accept.
which is why both of their arcs culminate in them breaking out of the system, learning to accept what they’d been taught was monstrous, and leaving behind respectability. it’s a genuinely great commentary, and i can definitely see why riz ahmed and eugene lee yang were chosen for this, as they’ve both done activist work for their communities.
#nimona#chatters#another analysis post i made at two am and then put in my drafts and forgot about LMAO#anyways i forgot to actually write a conclusion but shut up this isn't school i don't have to conclude SHIT#ballister boldheart#ambrosius goldenloin

And to think the animated movie version of Nimona was almost this close to being shelved if Netflix had not picked it up.
Yes, it’s good. It’s very good. I’ll let other people talk about the plot points, the characters and the pretty nifty soundtrack. (Santogold? Yes, please.)
I am here to talk about the animation.
Watching this movie made me realize what I don’t like about Pixar movies lately. Yes, Pixar’s the king of realism. And, yes, Nimona is way more design simple compared to Pixar. But the one thing Nimona has over Pixar is how the characters move.
Pixar characters don’t really move. Yes, they walk. Yes, they gesture. Yes, they will do things.
But they don’t “act.”
For example, there are many parts of Nimona where you could turn off the sound and still follow the story like it was a silent movie of old. The characters’ body language and facial language tell a story on their own. They fill up a whole screen with their mannerisms. This is Buster Keaton. This is Charlie Chaplin. This is Harold Llyod.
You don’t really get that with Pixar. And while that was fine years ago because everyone was striving for realism and Pixar was showing everyone how to animate hair, now, it’s.....boring.
Realism isn’t the end goal anymore. It’s a one trick pony that really should be out to pasture. Now people want to see what else you can do with animation. Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse showed that there are a wide range of styles you can pull from. Even taking ideas from Impressionism, Modern pop art (Check out Jean-Michel Bisquiat) and commercial art (See Bollywood film posters for example). Nimona is now showing how much acting range you can get from their animation. I’ve already watched it twice. Once for the story. The other just to watch the characters “act.” I’ll probably watch it a few more times because that animation, THAT ANIMATION!
I want more of that. Take notes, Pixar.

I love Nimona so much
I swear it’s an amazing movie if you haven’t watched it yet
Watch it
I’ve seen it 9 times now I think
Anyway
My thoughts on the ending (kinda, the scene where she becomes the “monster”)
I think that the encounter described at the beginning of the story was the backstory we were show and that it was just little kids made up to be so much much so when Nimona remembers it all and becomes the monster she’s not creating something new, she is becoming what everyone else saw her as and made her into. She was never that monster but because of everyone else around her shoving her into boxing and treating her as such (and with the legend) she became that monster.
Also the fact that the institute does more damage to the city then Nimona did in that scene. The only time she actively attacked something was the monster advert because she’s so tired of seeing the society build up on a lie that only wants to hurt her. And when Ballister apologises by putting his robot arm on Nimonas heart!!! Ahhhhhhh! This film has so much just amazing stuff
My final bit of half heart analysis is when she becomes the Phoenix to stop the director from killing everyone, the poster she passes shows her as gloreth while the director is on the monsters side showing how now the kingdom would see her as the hero.
(Also the idea that all their technology and weapons are advanced while their buildings and clothes are still medieval could show how their ideas haven’t changed in 1000 years but they’ve only focused on continuing those ideas rather then changing and improving themselves but that I could just be reading into too much)
#i will write an essay on this if someone asks#eventually though cuz I’m so busy rn#also it’s too warm to function#Nimona#nimona movie#Nimona scenes#nimona ballister#ballister boldheart#tw death#Tw killing#gloreth#Nimona the director#i love this movie so much

Watched Nimona recently and although it was a fairly enjoyable film and I would still recommend a watch. I got a bunch of thoughts about its ending and themes and how despite it trying to build itself up as this cool queer anticop story it fails to stick the landing and instead suffers from Treasure Planet syndrome. I've decided to ramble it out under the keep reading link so spoilers for Nimona starts there
So this movie is built upon a "knight system" which is established to be an obvious cop parallel, where the knights are essentially the police of this world. The allegory doesn't stop at the job description however, as the movie takes a bold move and introduces this system as very corrupt early on; from the main character being framed by a high-ranking, police-adjacent authority, to revealing that the entire system was built on false hatred and intolerance, to Nimona outright stating that it doesn't end at the true perpetrator, but that "the WHOLE system is corrupt". Time and time again we are given proof of how the knights, whether purposefully or not, hurt, indoctrinate, and brainwash the innocent. This is a great message, and they did an excellent job of carrying it throughout the runtime until doing a sudden 180 at the end. Not only do we see the cop system still in place, with knights in universe portrayed clearly on screen, but they're painted as good with a member playing soccer with a child. They tried to reject corruption by denouncing their founder, yet they still intend to perpetuate the job built to maintain her ideals from the ground up.
Despite attempting to dive into more meaningful territory with a daring dive into a serious modern problem, the ending they gave us was palatable and conveniently perfect in a way that satisfies everyone on a shallow level, which only works with a message that's equally shallow and inoffensive. This sort of trying to have cake and eat it too conclusion is what I refer to when saying Treasure Planet syndrome, as watching the movie gave me deja vu for the same faults- because, while Treasure Planet attempts to weave a unique and subversive narrative that touches upon deeper subjects which would lead up to an unconventional yet impactful end, what they finished with was jarringly standard hogwash where they attempted to tie lose ends in a conventionally pretty, corporate-ceo approved bow. For example, one of if not the main plot of the movie was Jim Hawkins addressing his trauma regarding an absent father that abandoned him and his mom at an early age, finding a better father figure in John Silver and gradually healing from his past with a better role model. Yet at the end, the cycle repeats itself as John ends up leaving (just like Jim's father) with narry a negative emotion from Jim. Jim then goes to cop academy where, despite his journey being about rejecting societal expectations and gaining self-improvement and growth through his own means, he becomes an A-Plus goody-two shoes cop loving poster boy in no time. The syndrome also hits particularly hard with Captain Amelia and Doctor Doppler, where despite their relationship being a man and woman, it still openly rejects heteronormativity with natural romantic progression (no love at first site bullshit) that involves Amelia being way more masculine and competent than Doppler and him being the well meaning yet gullible scientist. Even the way they flirt is subversive, with Amelia calling Doppler's eyes beautiful (a traditionally feminine descriptor) rather than the instigation being made by the man. Yet at the end, heteronormativity hits as Doppler is shown suddenly more assertive and masculine as he dips Amelia in a dance, not to mention their children fall into the trop of the girls looking exactly like the mother and the boy looking exactly like the father (Also. they put a bunch of makeup on the baby girls????). In short, Treasure Planet Syndrome is writing a subversive plot/story that ends abruptly in a palatable perfect way that sacrifices both natural progression and its messages in an effort to create a more appealing happy end. A movie that I think actually LANDED its subversive storyline was Strange World, where it successfully carried through with it's deeper narrative and provided a slightly uncomfortable yet incredibly understandable and meaningful ending.
One last thing before I stop my ramble- the queer rep in Nimona is pretty bad. I mean don't get me wrong, the main character (who is canonically mlm) is fine and I'm always happy to see upfront representation in my media, but the man he was saddle with as his boyfriend treats him terribly throughout most of the movie, to the point where I was genuinely shocked seeing them together at the end. His boyfriend is this nepotism golden child who's beloved by everyone and so neck deep in the corrupt system that he: slices off the mc's arm (just says a vague sorry later), spends most of the movie refusing to trust or believe him, spends most of the movie trying to hunt him down and arrest him, easily succumbs to peer pressure when it comes down to hurting him, prefers to stay loyal to the system rather than his bf, barely questions the situation, and refuses to listen to his bf provide him with explanations or answers. Even the MC recognizes how much he hurt him, because he ends up outright BREAKING UP WITH HIM and begging him to leave him alone, only to get back with him at the end like nothing ever happened. I want a happy ending for canon queer couples as much as the next guy, but if they wanted a happy end, why did the write the love interest to be so awful? They could've made him question the motives of his superiors and the entire situation more, he could've gone out of his way to seek out an explanation before forming his own conclusion, he could've made more attempts to break the rules for harm reduction, to try and understand what happened, hell to try and TALK to the MC- it's really baffling how they tried to paint this as true love when what should've happened is the MC getting a better spouse. I see this as an extension of Treasure Planet syndrome and trying to have and eat cake at the same time mentality, to say I wasn't surprised when I discovered this movie was written by the people behind modern She-Ra would be an understatement.
#I think I rambled out everything i wanted to say but. man#and i know im gonna get some smartass trying to argue that queer relationships dont have to be pure and perfect but like#dont we deserve better than to have a majority of our portrayals be toxic and shitty#in terms of treasure planet syndrome too. I would describe it as like#going down a fast and fun waterslide that you know will end in cold water up your nose but youre still looking forward to it#when suddenly a giant pillow is placed in your way to stop you abruptly#and then youre gently pushed down a branching slide that plops you into the kiddy pool#idk. does any of this make sense#nimona#nimona spoilers#they wanted to make something deep yet last minute decided they wanted to make the ending shallow yknow#also there was someone who argued no one knew the knight system was corrupt. ignorance does not absolve the harm they did

KK3: Social control theory
+ in Nimona (again)
Deviance can be defined as diverging from acceptable or usual standards, as known as norms. These are socially acceptable things within society, whether formally or informally accepted. Travis Hirschi's social control theory centers around the idea of social bonds, suggesting that deviancy stems from the absence of these relationships and a lack of social control. The more distanced someone is from society, or the lesser bonds they have towards it, the more likely they will be to engage in deviancy, as they lack any influences that would drive them away from this behavior. These influences may also present as positive or negative sanctions, an example being facing judgement from your peers when acting out. The four key concepts within this theory are belief, involvement, commitment, and attachment. When present, social control can be seen, preventing deviance. A positive example within modern society would be the granting of public awards, especially towards “heroes”, such as the Carnegie Medal which is given to those who risk their lives to save others. This encourages and rewards good behavior that supports social norms and endorsing positive beliefs, which further expresses social control within Hirschi’s theory.
This idea of control also carries on into "Nimona”, being a key part within the film. Their authority, known as the Institute, has control over the laws and media, using these to affirm and maintain what is acceptable within their society. A major part of the film would be the news stations, as the Director (the leader of the Institute) utilizes it multiple times, enforcing negative sanctions towards those who are deviant and broadcasting it for all the citizens to see. She would broadcast Ballister and Nimona's wanted posters, publicly shaming them and allowing for all to see what punishment their crimes faced as well as instilling specific beliefs into the people.
The people within the walls have no other source of information, relying solely on whatever the Institute chooses to show them. In this, they have complete control over what they see; in this the Institute can manipulate how people think. Therefore, they can enforce the social norms, values, and encouraged beliefs, discouraging deviance.
Belief is a key part within the film "Nimona", as the citizens and authorities work hard to maintain their centuries-old traditions and values. They have a strong sense of what is right and wrong, declaring monsters and criminals as deviant and driving them out, saying that they are a threat to what they believe to be “our very way of life” (1:19:08).
This expresses the strong views upheld within the people. The citizens within the walls all endorse these beliefs, quite passionately at that, expressing them and upholding them in everyday life. In this, they fall into line and keep to their values, conforming rather than being deviant. For example, they believe that it is important to follow the law of Gloreth (the first leader from one thousand years ago), keeping monsters out and knights noble blooded. They are further rewarded for conforming to these beliefs, being called a "hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different" (51:08), discouraging deviance in the form of monsters (or really anything that is different from them).
Those who have a strong belief in this follow these laws throughout their life, unlike Ballister and Nimona. Both had doubts about these beliefs and less passion for upholding them. In this, the concept of belief was absent in their lives, resulting in the breaking of the laws and expressing deviancy. This supports Hirschi’s theory, since as suggested, the lack of beliefs made deviancy more likely. They had less morals or values to lead them towards what was generally accepted as “right”, leaving them to indulge in deviant behavior in the form of crimes, such as destruction of property, vandalism, and treason.
Another major part of the film would be the concept of attachment, and how it is explored through Nimona's character. Throughout her life, she has been outcasted from others with no family or friends to support her. In this, she has no one to influence her life or care about regarding the opinions or judgement of others, nor any attachment or connection to society. This only changes when she meets and befriends Ballister. Before he enters her life as one of her only friends, she has no morals, as she graffities on walls, fights with knights, and destroys monuments to the noble. Yet as they bond, she faces his criticism and starts to accept Ballister's beliefs and morals as her own. Not only does he directly influence her values, but in having him in her life she has someone who she cares about, and in turn, she cares about his opinion of her. This encourages her to deter from the deviant behavior that she knows he doesn't approve of, and as to avoid sanctions such as scolding or grounding, she conforms to what is acceptable, earning his praise and relationship as a friend.
"Nimona” as a film endorses Travis Hirschi's social control theory, being an example of how the four concepts of belief, attachment, involvement, and commitment can help prevent deviancy and encourage social bonds as well as allowing for citizens to be connected to each other and their society. Utilizing Nimona's character arc, the film shows how the lack of and presence of relationships can majorly change people's behavior, as she grows from a criminal to a friend. Yet "Nimona” also expresses and critiques the dangers of the abuse of power within the authorities regarding social control. The Institute controlled the laws and sanctions, enforcing these over the citizens. In theory, this shouldn't be a problem, but the complete control and power that they held allowed them to abuse their role, using the media to manipulate their civilians into conforming to what they deemed socially acceptable behavior. The Institution's power over the laws and news is alike to our own government's authority, with each sanction or reaction being directly controlled, as is what they choose to show the population, and as a result, there is total control over what is regarded as acceptable within society. Though this theory is true, finding that deviance can be caused by the lack of connection, especially to society, the enforcement of social controls and sanctions can become abusive as seen in the film. This can then be applied to a smaller scale, such as within families. Usually, the sanction within a household would be discipline by a parent or guardian, but just like the government these sanctions can border on abuse. It's important to realize this, as the enforcement of control and presence of sanctions can lead to authoritarian ideals. "Nimona” expresses a bad execution of Hirschi's theory, reminding people of what to avoid.

Well This Looks Pretty Damn Cool!
youtube
At long last... NIMONA, visually in motion! And a concrete release date, too. June 30th. Same day as DreamWorks' RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN, which will be rolling in theaters. I wish we could this very gorgeous and dynamic-looking picture on the big screen too, but... Oh well...
Anyways, not much for me to say other than it looks every bit as cool as I imagined. Another CG-but-painted-looking movie, with some very smooth work and such a cool look. It looks way more like a classic 2D animated picture, or a really painterly indie game.
Arriving now, this picture was about 3/4 done in animation before the studio it originated from, Blue Sky Studios, was shut down by The Walt Disney Company's former CEO. I'd like to think a lot of what we're seeing here was laid down in 2020/early 2021, so in a way, it was doing some neat stuff before other neat stuff came out. Namely THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES, ARCANE: LEAGUE OF LEGENDS, and PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH. The picture was in the works for a while, too, under FEAST director Patrick Osborne at first (later taken over by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, of SPIES IN DISGUISE), and I'd assume it was always aiming for this kind of look, pre-SPIDER-VERSE even.
It's also refreshing to see a big-time animated movie with more of a, shall I say... Mischievous bent to it? Not quite moral protagonist, for starters, and that's on full display here in the trailer... if the first-look images released in the lead-up to this trailer's release didn't already spell it out for you. That smile of hers just got more and more (delightfully) devilish with each new image. That's good, we need more variety in PG-level stories. Nothing wrong with protagonists who are a little bit on the bad side. Worked okay enough for DESPICABLE ME and MEGAMIND. From the graphic novel synopsis, it seems like it's going to be a very subversive take on good and evil, if the law is actually right or not (very timely, I'd say), etc. Maybe our leads aren't so bad after all, I've got some reading to do!
I still consider this to be a Blue Sky movie, their final film - partially... A bittersweet coda to their long existence. The movie was 75% done before the plug was pulled, and reports have said that the crew did NOT start from scratch after production resumed... and I'd imagine a lot of what was finished was kept in the movie despite some things I've heard it about being significantly retooled after Annapurna and Netflix picked it up. I'd imagine there were some things the directors and writing team could get away with there that they couldn't under Disney. There were reports from former Blue Sky crew members that Disney higher ups did push back on things in the movie. Keep in mind, Disney was going to release Pixar's LIGHTYEAR without the lesbian kiss - a barely second-long scene, until they faced pressure due to the former CEO's initial support of that wet-sandwich Florida governor's draconian anti-LGBTQIA+ nonsense. STRANGE WORLD, as we all know, was straight up dumped with very muted fanfare. NIMONA's poster curiously lists Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor as the writers. Years prior, the movie was being written by Marc Haimes, a writer on Shannon Tindle's meditative Laika wonder KUBO & THE TWO STRINGS. (Just so you know, that picture was largely taken away from him.) Haimes is credited as "Story by", including a curiously large amount of people including the two screenwriters and the two directors, in addition to two other people: Pamela Ribon and Keith Bunin... That's... Quite a lot of writers on this one.
Either way, I'm excited nonetheless. Forward-thinking visuals, LGBTQIA+ representation, a seemingly new kind of story for this animated feature format, something a little edgier... Might just be "the one that got away" from Disney, may even cost them their usual Oscar win come this winter. I will consider this film to be Blue Sky's swan song, I hope they get some kind of mention in the credits...
Speaking of Disney... Not cool that they're flat-out removing movies and shows from Disney+, amidst a writer's strike, and some with LGBTQIA+ themes and content... Right before Pride Month. I don't understand why removing something they made and/or own from a service, and having it not be available anywhere else, helps anybody. Them, or the market... At the very least, they can put some of these movies, such as the Howard Ashman documentary HOWARD, on physical media. Nasty side effects of what David Zaslav did to Warner Bros.' library and all the content purges happening under his leadership there. Capitalism, how you don't make any sense...
Somewhere buried in all the Cannes Film Festival news is the selling of an animated feature called THE GROWCODILE, a little romp about a young girl hiding her ever-growing pet croc from her shoe store-owning father, and the adventure she goes on with her grandfather to give the animal a new home. It's based on a book, and will be directed by Cartoon Saloon veterans Joost Van Den Bosch and Erik Verkerk.
What else? Awkwafina has been cast in KUNG FU PANDA 4... Apparently. I'm not sure how reputable "The Hollywood Handle" is, a site I've barely ever heard of... but if she's onboard, I wonder who she will be voicing. She was, after all, in DreamWorks' own THE BAD GUYS as Ms. Tarantula. The villainous Chameleon is said to be a female character, so I wouldn't be surprised if she plays the main antagonist in this. From bad guy to really bad guy.
That's pretty much all the big animation news I can think of, but... Yeah... NIMONA, finally around the corner, and we finally get to see how it actually moves and plays out...

I liked Nimona but I’m a little confused by what the message is supposed to be.
I think it’s along the lines of don’t judge a book by it’s cover and be accepting. But throughout the movie I didn’t feel like (at least until the backstory reveal) Nimona was treated as a monster because of her appearance and ability but because of her VERY violent personality and enjoying the chaos and destruction.
I mean don’t get me wrong it was very entertaining to watch but if I was actually there I would do everything in my power to stay away from her.
I feel like they're are kinda multiple themes surrounding the main one tbh, for me, it's the phrase, "You're not alone."
Let me explain, I think the reason why Nimona's personality was as extreme and crazy as they were showing is due to the reason of her having to spend the last thousand years living among the reminisce of a huge lie that had started when her first true friend saw her as a monster due to the influence of the other villagers and made that fateful experience the foundation of the kingdom.
We even see her doing stuff around the kingdom near the beginning and during the film, like putting graffiti on posters, wanting to cause destruction the first chance she gets when the snuck into the castle and when they kidnapped the squire, even during the board game session, she improves a scenario where she would storm the castle walls and letting chaos ensue.
I feel like it's one of the reasons why she was so determined to have to become Ballister's sidekick after the incident and became wanted. She wasn't the only one seen as the villain for once, and she felt that they could take down the kingdom together. She didn’t feel alone anymore in that aspect.
Of course that all changes once details about the past are revealed, and Nimona breaks down transforms into the giant, black monster form and goes through the kingdom, deciding to....do that one horrible thing...to end her pain, before Ballister manages stop her and apologize. Saying that, "I see you, Nimona. And you are not alone."
All that she wanted was for people to see her for who she wanted to be and not what everyone saw and assumed what she was, even in that darkest moment, Ballister saw her for who she was because of the fact he got to know and care for her and unlike what happened with Gloreth, he came back for her even though he had doubts about what was revealed, and made amends with her, allowing everyone to see the errors of the past and saw her not as a powerful monster of destruction written in the history books, but as heroic, kind and majestic spirit that helped them.
That's just what I got from watching the movie.

I think there’s a ir of a difference in what constitutes “trying to be good in a bad world” and “trying to make everything worse”
I don’t actually know much about critters rewrite, but It seems like they’re trying to do something similar to nimona, where nimona is introduced graffitiing a propaganda poster and then spraying pain in a guys eye for insulting her, throughout the film she embraces bi g considered a monster and is active key trying to get the other main character to come over to the “dark side” and call himself a villain, and later on they do team up to try and destroy the order of monster fighting knights who have controlled and “protected” the kingdom since its founding, and yeah getting into several fights with that kingdoms authorities,
So the idea that ruby stealing means she’s sue how being evil because the world is evil seems kinda like a poor read, critter possibly has a perspective more like the one I mention, the rewrite still most likely sucks (again, I haven’t read it and probably never will) but just having ruby stealing seems like a weird thing to focus on, or having Roman be somewhat right when he targets society,
I also don’t personally think that wanting to tear down a world that has only ever hurt you is inherently wrong? At least not if you don’t mean so literally destroying everything,
Take Ilia for example, human society, or at least atlas society, killed her parents, mocked her for it, and tries to punish her whenever she dares to fight back, to ask for more, the world at best ignores her suffering and at worse has already decided she was a monster, so why shouldn’t she lash out? Why shouldn’t she get angry? Again this doesn’t excuse the kinds of things Adam did like murdering random people,
But frankly I think parts of remnant society need to be dismantled, wether that’s through gradual legislative change or occasional violence depends on the specific situation and has yet to be seen,
That’s kinda the biggest complaint I have as I’ve stated before team rwby seems unwilling to actively go out of their way to challenge current remnant society except as a way to stop Salem, maybe because they don’t have time to while dealing with Salem but then I wonder why you even include all those societal issues the way they did. Making them integral to the majority of the villains motivations
Especially since Salem destroyed atlas making those issues moot anyways
Many have said it was to show how atlas’ systems of oppression ultimately destroyed it, but they didn’t, they helped Salem destroy it yes but Salem was still necessary in that equation, if Salem had simply decided not to attack atlas it would still be floating more or less unchanged until/unless Robyn managed to continue her work,
Yeah I agree with pretty much everything in this
Ruby stealing stuff is fine as a completely different character, but it just doesn't fit RWBY or Ruby Rose for me. I just don't like it.
Team RWBY try to be as nonviolent as possible at first, seen with trying to persuade Ironwood, but once he starts getting violent they get violent right back. I'm hoping they learn the lesson that sometimes there is no peaceful solution to oppression on par with Ironwood's.
I've never understood the whole obsession with making Roman Torchwick justified, he's so much better as an unjustified yet still understandable and fairly nuanced near pure evil character. He's evil as hell, he LOVES it, and we love to see it. He's got charm, he's got a sense of fashion, and he's just plain enjoyable.
All of this while still having him be fairly nuanced through his whole thing about everything he is doing being done for the purpose of survival and not necessarily because he likes doing it (though he does like doing it to be fair).
