Do we actually need “Animal Rights”?

This idea was initially proposed by Peter Singer in his very famous book and my textbook- "Animal Liberation". The basic idea revolves around the key concept of "specism", just like racism, sexism, etc, specism means to have a preference for one species over another. In our case, we prefer our own species the most. This is a question of Applied Ethics in Philosophy, and as always, rather than giving a direct answer to the question, Philosophy gives multiple approaches to solve this problem.

Dogs are being abandoned in record numbers. Please know there are resources to help keep pets or rehome them. I understand times are tough but it's no excuse for dumping animals. It is animal abuse and illegal. Abandoned pets are dying of heat stroke, dehydration, getting run over, or killed by bigger animals. The Elko shelter is over capacity. They have a $40 surrender fee when they're not over capacity. Twin Falls is also over capacity and not accepting surrenders. When they do, only local residents are allowed. Humane society in Utah is accepting surrenders for $60 or $90 for litters of puppies or kittens, but by appointment only. They also have resources for rehoming and pet retention (see link below). You can't sell animals on Facebook but you can rehome. There are several local animal groups that allow rehoming posts. If all else fails you can try sitting with the animal(s) and an advertising sign at a grocery store or intersection (where allowed) until you find a decent person willing to adopt. All these are better alternatives to leaving an innocent animal to suffer and die. Please everyone, spay and neuter your pets. Adopt don't shop, and do not give animals as surprise gifts. It's a lot of responsibility. If you get a puppy, factor in the cost of not only decent food, but vet visits, vaccinations, spay/neuter, and obedience training. Puppies need a lot of guidance or there will be behavior issues. A lot of these puppies are Christmas puppies. Every spring and summer there's a surge of abandoned half-grown pups. If you have 2 yr old dog thats been vomiting at least one-two times a day... and you haven't brought it to the vet to see whats wrong and don't want to figure out whats wrong or rehome your dog, but instead want to just euthanize it. You should not have animals in your home.

There was a cat hoarding situation in Deeth. Eight (out of 50) nice relatively healthy (malnourished but not diseased) kitties were unjustly euthanized at the Elko animal shelter last week. And one tech was particularly rough with a kitty and got bit. Someone needs to be held responsible and should be fired immediately! The shelter manager was not consulted with before the cats were euthanized. This is unacceptable. We can do better by our animals. The key to preventing situations like this from happening in the first place is low cost and available spay and neuter options. I wish all the veterinarians in Elko would do more about the pet overpopulation issues, particularly for cats. One clinic charges $250 for a cat spay as they insist on doing heart and blood tests beforehand. Which is ideal but not necessary. It should be left to the pet owner to opt for instead of a requirement. To compare a cat spay in Utah is as low as $27. Some clinics are booked out 6 weeks for spays and the youngest they will spay and neuter is 6 months. Cats can reproduce at 4 months! In Utah they fix cats at only 8 weeks. Again, our animals deserve better. People shouldn't have to travel to Twin or Utah and stress animals even more just to get affordable and timely spays/neuters. If this is ever going to change more people need to start pressuring our veterinarians to do something about it. Aspen, Tanabo and Great Basin Vet all have helped a lot but a lot more is needed for Elko County to fix the cat overpopulation problem. I know at least Great Basin Vet (a mobile vet) is trying to work on putting together an affordable spay/neuter clinic but state over regulation really hampers such efforts in rural areas. Lastly thank you to the good employees at the animal shelter, Elko Feline Fix and Animal House for all the hard work they do for the animals of Elko County. #Regram - @meowvillage by @get_regrammer We got a call from a nice gentleman in Damascus about a mama kitty who was stealing food from his resident feral to survive so she could feed her 5 hungry babies. We agreed to take them into the village, but as soon as mama got wind something was awry, she took the babies and hightailed it to another location. Thanks to @wlfosterkitties for going door to door to find out which yard they had moved to and @cattaledreams for coordinating the trapping, we were able to capture one of the tiny gangsters today!
