Cargill Gilston Knot was born on June 30th 1856.
The splendidly named Cargill Gilston Knott was the son of Pelham Knott, an agent for a paper manufacturer and his wife Ellen. His paternal uncle was the artist Tavernor Knott. I wonder if the Christian name was due to a religious thing, a couple of people with the surname having featured in previous post that were close to the church in some way.
The family must have moved at some point in his childhood as he was educated at Arbroath High School in Angus, some distance from Penicuik, which is south of Edinburgh, he attended the University of Edinburgh, where he studied alongside James Alfred Ewing. He worked on various aspects of electricity and magnetism, obtaining his doctorate in 1879.
Cargill was the founding chairman of Edinburgh Mathematical Society, made important contributions in the field of quaternion algebra and ended his life as General Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In short, he was a member of Edinburgh’s intellectual elite. But this summary conceals an exotic excursion.
In the 1880s, following its enforced opening to the wider world, Japan was keen to draw on western expertise in its headlong rush towards modernisation. Thus, at the age of 27, Knott came to be appointed Professor of Physics and Engineering at Tokyo Imperial University.
In order to expand its commerce Japan needed to construct a network of lighthouses, a challenging project in an earthquake zone. Attempting to identify suitable sites by quantifying the risk of earthquakes Knott began to study the mathematics of wave transmission across the boundaries of sea and land. The resulting ‘Knott’s equations’ remain fundamental to the modern science of reflection seismology.
On his return to Edinburgh, Knott took up the position of a Reader in Applied Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, holding the post until his death.
He died at his home at 42 Upper Gray Street, Newington, Edinburgh, on 26th October 1922.

Fife’s biggest annual arts competition unveiled its winners on Friday.
The top entries were announced at the official opening of the 2019 Fife Art Exhibition, which is sponsored by Shell UK, at the Lochgelly Centre.

This year’s winners are Dinnes McArthur (Dalgety Bay) - Talk Like an Egyptian; Thomas Cargill (Cowdenbeath) - The Over Thinker; Joyce Munro (Dunfermline) - Fish and Chips; Moira S MacPherson (Kelty) - Tuppence a Bag; Craft Award - Angela Braisher (Lochgelly) - Matchstick Jewellery Box; Youth Award - Andrew Fretwell (Cupar) - The Fifer.
The six winning works will be purchased by Shell and presented to Fife hospitals and healthcare facilities and each of the artists received £200.
The winning artworks will also be displayed at Kirkcaldy Galleries prior to being presented to NHS Fife.
This year’s exhibition, which has been running for 36 years, attracted nearly 200 entries from amateur artists in the Kingdom and the works now line the walls in the centre’s public spaces.
Gillian Parsons, programming and engagement officer for Fife Cultural Trust, said: “The winners’ works impressed the judges with their stand-out quality.
“The presentation night is always an exciting occasion because as well as announcing the winners, we get to see the full exhibition and the breadth of the work on show at the Lochgelly Centre is a reflection of the range and high standard of amateur artists we have in Fife.”
Guests on Friday included Councillor Linda Erskine, chair of Cowdenbeath Area Committee, Teresa Waddington, plant manager, Shell, Mossmorran, and Sinead Braiden, non-executive director, NHS Fife.
The evening was hosted by Councillor Lesley Backhouse, vice convener of Fife Council’s Community and Housing Committee, who is also a board member of Fife Cultural Trust, who also presented the prizes.
Other artists highly commended were: Irene Combe, The Rain in Spain; Ian Thompson, The Peep Show; Katherine Montgomery, The Kingdom of Fife; Fred Barbour, Morning Mar Forest; Kirsten Mirrey, The Catch of the Day; Christine Surradge, Ringupurv; Caitlin Evans, A Happy Bunch; Sheila Collins, The One That
Got Away; Michael Deeprose, A Hard Life (Times); Terry Angus, Lost in Thought; Christopher Nicol, The Titanic; Anne Ewan, Girl with the Berret.
The exhibition runs at the Lochgelly Centre until November 23.

USDA says ground beef recalled after E. coli outbreak was sold at Aldi’s, Target
WASHINGTON — Last week, Cargill Meat Solutions recalled more than 132,000 pounds of ground beef due to possible E. coli contamination after one person died and 17 have reported feeling ill.
Now, officials have determined the beef was sold nationwide at stores like Aldi’s, Target and Sam’s Club.
According to a news release from the company, the ground beef products were produced and packaged on June 21. The death and illnesses happened from July 5 to July 25.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service cited concern that customers may have frozen the contaminated meat in their freezers and advises customers to check to see if their ground beef could be part of this recall.
The USDA considers this a high risk situation.
The ground beef was distributed to Aldi’s in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. It was also distributed to Target locations nationwide and Sam’s Club locations in North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia, along with several other grocery chains not located in the metro.
The FSIS learned of the E. coli investigation on Aug. 16. The FSIS, Centers for Disease Control and other state public health and agriculture partners found that the beef was the probably source of the illnesses.
The ground beef products, produced and packaged on June 21, have the number “EST. 86R” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The following products have now been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination:
3-lb. chubs of “OUR CERTIFIED 73/27 FINE GRIND GROUND BEEF” with a USE OR FREEZE BY JUL/11/18 and case code 00228749057646.

10-lb. chubs of “EXCEL 93/7 FINE GRIND GROUND BEEF” with “Use/Frz. By Sep 05” on the chub label and a “PACK DATE 08/16/2018” on the box label.

Terrors and Bairns lead Championship shake-up
Dundee United indicated they mean business as the summer transfer window opened and manager Csaba Laszlo appears to have been given funding designed to ensure they do not spend a fourth season in the Scottish Championship.
The Romania-born Hungarian has utilised his knowledge of football on the Continent to secure goalkeepers from the top flight in Switzerland and Czech Republic.
He also moved quickly to sign four players from their potential title rivals and that has been a theme of the summer, with players switching jerseys between Championship clubs.
Willo Flood looked likely to be in opposition to United following his Tannadice release only to leave Dunfermline Athletic after just nine days, the Irish midfielder using a clause in his contract to take up a lucrative deal with Bali United in Indonesia instead.

The Pars’ other headline-grabbing business was bringing the Longridge brothers together for the first time in their senior careers – forward Louis switching from Falkirk and his defender brother, Jackson, leaving promoted Livingston.
Like the younger Longridge, midfielder Josh Mullin and centre-half Gregor Buchanan also turned down the chance to stay with the Premiership-bound West Lothian outfit, joining Ross County and Greenock Morton respectively.
Falkirk manager Paul Hartley has shown his determination not to flirt with relegation again and among his signings are four players with international experience – Lithuanian striker Deimantas Petravicius, from Motherwell, Northern Ireland midfielder Paul Paton, previously of Plymouth Argyle, Cyprus midfielder Dimitris Froxylias, who left Dumbarton, and Scotland Under-21 midfielder Ruben Sammut on loan from Chelsea.
Promoted part-timers Alloa Athletic have brought with them the second top scorer in League One last season – Alan Trouten from Albion Rovers – while third-tier champions Ayr United have been slowest off the mark in making additions to their squad.
