Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe
by Retroware
A review in two parts.
See Part I for The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures.
For The Angry Video Game Nerd II: Assimilation and The Angry Video Game Nerd In Tower of Torment, read on.
Review:
If AVGN I was Mega Man, AVGN II is Mega Man X. This is still a game that laughs at your attempts to skirt its deathtraps, but it’s mellowed slightly. Fewer lasers; more health pick-ups. And like X before him, The Nerd can slide down walls.
Tumblr media
It’s all thanks to a pair of “Grip Loafers” that appears in the tutorial. In later stages, you’ll find additional enhancements in the form of NES accessories, like a Konami LaserScope that reveals hidden platforms or a Bandai PowerPad cape that slows descents. These permanent upgrades replace the first game’s character-swapping; a change for the better.
Tumblr media
The first AVGN was seven distinct levels. The sequel has four worlds (three levels and a boss fight), plus a shorter fifth at the end—an improvement in some ways, but the theming is hit and miss.
Tumblr media
Mouse Trap mice and Hungry, Hungry Hippos attack in a Crossfire-themed level. Awesome! Enemies in the horror world are…ghosts? Mummies? Yawn.
Tumblr media
AVGN has covered plenty of Japanese games. Why is this “Tokyo” so reliant on broad sushi jokes?
Fortunately, Tower of Torment splits the difference, throwing assets from both games in a pot and mixing in an inspired Big Rigs joke.
+ Almost everything you loved from about the first game, with enough new twists to give it a unique identity. + Excellent challenge. So intense it makes my hands sweat and shake, but after having cleared several levels without losing a life, I can attest that this game is always fair. Slightly less demanding than the original, but no less rewarding. + Mega Man X-esque upgrade system. Looking every piece of hidden equipment is a fun; returning to old stages with new powers is even better. + Assimilation's final boss is a bit anticlimactic, so I'm glad I have the Deluxe edition, and no the standalone release. Tower of Torment is an excellent ending that calls back to both games and a few other iconic AVGN moments.
– Nerd commentary still falls flat. – Boss fights were a little too difficult for my taste in the first game, so I'm glad they've been toned down, but there's been a slight over-correction. – Mega Man and similar games have conveyor belts. Sushi travels on conveyor belts. Cinemassacre is home to a lot of videos about Godzilla. I get how these three concepts were combined into a sushi/neon/ninja level, but the execution feels out of place in an AVGN game, and borderline racist. Make jokes about specific ninja media! Get the Toho creatures out of the background and into the stages! – AVGN I took hard swings with its jokes, references, and themes, and a lot of them missed. The sequel comes across as more timid and less inventive, without being ant more consistent. There are no "I can't believe they did that" moments.
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Bottom Line: If 8- and 16-bit action games aren't your cup of tea, Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe probably won't change your mind. I don't think you have to be a fan of the Web series to appreciate the game, but if all things crass and crude rub you the wrong way, keep your distance. Don't play this one in front of the kids. For anyone else, this is a no-brainer. Which game is better? Who cares! Individually, they both get a strong recommendation. The best versions of two great games, packaged together, complete with a worthy epilogue? Go for it.

Review: Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe
Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe is the perfect game collection for fans of the difficult 8-bit games and the Angry Video Game Nerd. That being said, while it’s a great game collection for people who fit that criteria, if you remove the character and humor it ends up being an average old-fashioned action game with a ridiculous difficulty level.
Check it out!

Week In Review - 3/26/23
#JakeReviewsItch Week In Review Archives
This week's reviews:
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe 🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 Animal Lover 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 Annwn: the Otherworld 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 Anodyne 🧡🤍🤍🤍🤍 Anomalies 🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story
Hoo. Remember the days when half the "games" I reviewed were junky, half-finished projects, thrown together at weekend game jams? This week's line-up was big and involved, which is why this seems like an appropriate time to discuss burnout. We'll also look at exciting game news and reporting that came from other writers this week. But first, make some time for our...
Game of the Week
This week saw two new games rank among this site's top five. One is a powerful empathy-generator, a game with an important message and the power to change lives. The other is a Mega Man-like with poop jokes.
Tumblr media
Sorry, Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story. I love you. I admire you. You affected me. You're the game people need to play. But what I want to play, all day, every day, is Mega Man, and between the two of you, Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe is decidedly more Mega Man-ish.
It's rude, it's crude, and it has the right attitude. Beneath the swearing, the dookie, the gore, and the funniest in-game nudity since the '80s, these are two action platformers that understand why the classics are still classic. Every inch of every stage is designed to punish any mistake and giggle at the resulting explosion of blood and guts, but it's never unfair. A perfect, untouched run of this game is possible. Your mistakes are your own. The jokes and references lack some of that same precision—a notable shortcoming for games based on a long-running comedy series—but the hits mostly make up for the misses. Come for the action; not the writing. For those who don't want all that jumping and shooting, or who aren't up for the heaviness of Another Lost Phone, consider taking a peek at my Animal Lover review. I'm not the demographic for visual novels about anime men and their bare chests, but I was won over by the light tone, lovable characters, and absurd mystery. I imagine those of you who actively seek romantic visual novels are going to love it.
#JakeReviewsBurnout
I thought reviewing Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe in two parts was a smart move. It's a compilation of two games; it made sense to review each on its own. Covering both in one 200-word review wouldn't be fair. And I wanted to be fair to these games. I'd played and loved both of them already. This was my chance to go through them again analytically; to make sense of why they worked. That's not the same as playing a game for fun. It takes time. It takes a different kind of energy. That was the biggest motivation: I thought dividing the game across each day meant each day would require half the time and energy. Well, sure, it seems stupid now that I see it typed on a screen. I considered naming Anomalies Game of the Week. It was the only one that didn't demand anything from me.
That's not why we're here, though, is it? No, I want the games that make me think and feel and forget to eat lunch. Good or bad, I want to be challenged. I want an insight into an artist's ambitions and passions. If you do the same thing every day, the way you feel about doing the same thing is eventually going to change. I'm not burning out yet, but I know the relief I felt the one day this week when I discovered I was playing a non-game; that I could get through my daily obligation quickly. A feeling like that is a call to action. What action? Don't know yet, but I need to ease up a little.
Read This!
Here's one way to lighten the load: Fall back on my fellow writers! [Edit: Whoops, I wrote lots of words. And now I'm writing about that. This was not the plan!]
Why game archivists are dreading this month’s 3DS/Wii U eShop shutdown (Kyle Orland / Ars Technica)
The imminent eShop closure has been a frequent topic in this space, and indeed, among everyone who covers games online. This article (ignore the dopey title) stands out by focusing not on commercial and entertainment concerns, and instead looking at how the Entertainment Software Association is actively making it uniquely difficult for game developers, students, researchers, and historians to legally access the materials they need.
The Racing Game That Changed Everything Was Built on Lockheed Martin Technology (Tyler Le / Jalopnik)
Do I need to start reading car Web sites? Maybe so, if they're going to be home to game history writing like this. What starts as a fun story about the origins of Daytona USA goes on to explain the industry-changing side effects of America's bloated military spending in the '90s—and why today's military budget is strictly for murder and world domination instead of good things.

New Toxic Crusaders Game!
The Toxic Avenger never should have been adapted into a children's cartoon, and that is why I love Toxic Crusaders. It's the only thing I like about Toxic Crusaders. Wait, no—that song was catchy. The ill-advised nature of its existence and the theme song. Well, if there's one thing the world's demanding now, in whatever year this is, it isn't a new Toxic Crusaders game. And if you haven't already started the video, now is the time. That is an aggressively stupid cover of the theme. I'm in love. It gets better! Who is responsible for this terrible decision? Why, none other than Retroware, developer of the Angry Video Game Nerd games! Could this be Toxie's first worthwhile appearance since 1984? (I've seen the sequels. No, thanks.) Oh! Oh! I just remembered the Toxic Crusaders toys. They were made by Playmates and they were mutants, so they were basically extra-gross Ninja Turtles toys. If this game gets toys, I'm sold.
Instead Of Resident Evil 4, I Played A Game That Uses A Roll Of Toilet Paper As A Controller (Mike Drucker / The Gamer)
I need this game right now.

I just completed Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe! I have to say something that I don’t say lightly. This game gave me feelings very similar to what Sonic Mania gave me back in 2017.
The graphics are updated and gorgeous. The music is full of absolute bangers and great remixes. The stages are designed with so much creativity. But it’s the way the game throws constant callbacks and deepcut in-jokes that just sparks that joy center in the back of a fans brain.
The game is great and I’m so glad that even in 2020, AVGN is still going strong! This release is more than worth the generous asking price!

Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures I & II Deluxe Confirmed For Switch
PAX East 2019 is in full swing and as well as Playable demos of upcoming games, it is a great format to make announcements. Game Developers FreakZone have announced that they will be bringing Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe to the Nintendo Switch.
The first game saw release on the Wii U back in 2015 but initially launched back in 2013 on Steam. The sequel never saw release on a Nintendo…
