Street sale of coconuts was introduced in Port-of-Spain by German-born businessman Conrad Frederick Stollmeyer some time after he arrived in 1845.

Stollmeyer was also among the pioneers in the Pitch Lake manufacture of Kerosine, which was originally called "Trinidad Oil".

Stollmeyer had fled America where, as editor of a Philadelphia newspaper that strongly advocated freedom of the slaves in the southern United States, he was almost hanged by southern planters.

He landed in Port-of-Spain with the promise of a job as managing a railway company in Trinidad.

The investors, however, went bankrupt, and Stollmeyer had to find ways to support his wife and four children whom he had brought with him.

He leased some forested mangrove wasteland in Cocorite, cleared the land, and sold firewood to government offices. He planted coconut trees, and later started to sell coconuts for a penny each. The coconuts were loaded on donkey carts for sale along Marine Square and Frederick Street.

At one time Stollmeyer proposed to Lord Harris, the governor of the island, the possibility of organising and encouraging “small farms and the cultivation of provision by the emancipated labourers in the British West Indian colonies”.

At around 1849, Stollmeyer accepted the job of looking after the Pitch Lake holdings of pioneer Thomas Barnes, the 10th Earl Dundonald. They started exporting Asphalt to the United States and Europe for the manufacture of the newly invented Kerosine, which was then named "Trinidad Oil".

In 1883, Stollmeyer moved his family out of Belmont Valley Road, where they resided, to the Santa Cruz valley.

Eventually, the Stollmeyers bought other estates in the valley: Petit Curracaye, Grand Curracaye, El Guamal, Landor, San Patricio, La Sagesse and Fahay's.

Stollmeyer, who said he came to Trinidad with $5 in his pocket, died a millionaire in 1904.

That year, his son Charles Fourier Stollmeyer constructed a Scottish-style mansion at the northwest edge of the Queen’s Park Savannah. Designed after a part of Balmoral Castle, it was called Killarney. Most people still call it "Stollmeyer's Castle" even though the property passed out of the family in the 1970s.

Although the younger Stollmeyer was a cocoa planter by volition, he had inherited a concession to work parts of the Pitch Lake from his father, as well as Perseverance Estate in Guapo which showed promise of having oil reserves.

On his land at Guapo, he installed an antiquated refinery or “still” to produce gasoline for the ever-growing numbers of motor vehicles on the roads.

Eventually, Stollmeyer sold portions of the rich Perseverance oil lands to Kern Trinidad Ltd, a firm based in California. He died a year later.

What remains of the Perseverance Estate is still owned by the Stollmeyer family. It no longer produces oil, but the oil-bearing sands have been quarried for many decades for use as road-paving material.

Arizona Cardinals 2020 Position Breakdowns: Defensive Line

The Arizona Cardinals supplied depth along their defensive line at the onset of the 2020 season by drafting two rookies, Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence, in the fourth round of April’s draft, while also adding pieces in free agency. Still, the position saw a constant rotation under coach Brentson Buckner.

Marquee free-agent acquisition Jordan Phillips experienced sporadic success in his first season in the desert while dealing with several injuries, veteran nose tackle Corey Peters was lost for the season with a knee injury in Week 10 and the position group saw an influx of new players and elevations from the practice squad by year’s end.

Strengths

Two bright spots were the play of second-year defensive tackle Zach Allen and first-year Cardinal Angelo Blackson, who led the position group in tackles with 35 and 24, respectively.

The interior of the defensive line, while not flashy statistically, was physically imposing and took attention away from some of the team’s outside pass rushers when Peters and Phillips were healthy and active. In their absence, the team signed veteran Domata Peko Sr., who filled the role respectively well and finished the year third among defensive linemen in tackles with 16.

As a position group, the defensive line accumulated 12.5 sacks, which was equal to that of outside linebacker Haason Reddick. In defensive coordinator Vance Joseph’s 3-4 scheme, defensive linemen are not relied on to rush as much as in other systems.

Weaknesses

The Cardinals defensive line had consistent trouble generating pressure and clogging passing lanes of opposing quarterbacks.

There were no eye-popping statistical performances from the defensive line this year and marquee players such as Phillips, Peters and others were not available for the entirety of the season.

Fotu and Phillips flashed at times, but still were green and had rookie moments in their first season in the NFL.

Key facts and figures

○ Allen led the unit in tackles with 35, followed by Blackson with 24 and Peko Sr. with 16

○ Blackson had the most sacks of the group with 2.5

○ Phillips was second on the entire team in forced fumbles with two and no other defensive lineman had stats in the category

○ The Cardinals allowed 6.6 receiving yards per attempt against running backs

○ Arizona was No. 21 in the NFL in rushing defense, allowing 125.5 yards per game

Standouts

DT/NT Angelo Blackson: After being released by the Houston Texans, the Cardinals pounced on signing Blackson to a one-year contract in September. He was productive and flashed more than others in the position group on a consistent basis, leading the team in sacks (2.5) and second in tackles (24). Blackson started as a defensive tackle in Joseph’s 3-4 scheme, but converted to nose tackle later in the year after Peters was lost to injury.

DT Zach Allen: In his second year with the franchise, Allen made strides while also dealing with inconsistent availability due to injury. While he led the position group in tackles with 35, he missed three games due to lingering issues. Still, he managed to add two sacks to his resume during the season and showed glimpses of why he garnered third-round NFL Draft designation.

Blackson and Peko Sr. were mid-year signees on one-year deals to stopgap a shortage in depth. In turn, they were the team’s second- and third-leading tacklers among defensive linemen. Does that warrant new contracts? It is a question that general manager Steve Keim and Co. need to consider.

The team took two defensive linemen in the 2020 draft and could target the position again, especially if the team decides not to bring back Peters, who was a captain last season and commanded a hefty salary. Injury concerns with this being his second major knee issue could lead to uncertainty regarding his future in Arizona.

Otherwise, the Cardinals return everyone at the position that they choose not to release, including some options who ended the year on the practice squad and have since been signed to reserve/future contracts.

While depth does not appear to be a major issue, the talent disparity could be a concern.

Woman dies saving her children from a fire. Her husband had died of cancer years earlier

Kristina Stratton ran into the two-story house to rescue her children, pastor and family friend Angelo Frazier said. One of her children woke up to discover the situation and realized she couldn’t breathe or go downstairs, where Stratton was. So she and her siblings broke the window and escaped from the top floor.

The four children who escaped were left with minor to moderate injuries and treated at a local hospital, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

But the 38-year-old mother of five didn’t make it out alive. Firefighters found her dead inside the house during the rescue operation.

Stratton’s five children are now left without a mother, and her three youngest children are now orphans. Four years ago, her husband and the father of three of her children died of cancer.

“There are a lot of questions now that both mom and dad have passed and how that’s going to look in the next weeks and months and years,” Frazier said.

Friends and family members have spent the past few days sorting through what’s left of the home.

“It’s just unspeakable heartbreak to have to do something like that when you lose a loved one, so you can just imagine the raw emotions that are there,” Frazier told CNN affiliate KERO-TV.

Members of the community are coming together in the wake of Stratton’s death. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the family, while North Bakersfield Toyota is hosting a donation drop-off.

“She had a lot of people who loved her,” Frazier told CNN. “She loved her kids, her family, God. She loved life. She was just that kind of person.”

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. The Kern County Fire Department released a statement on Facebook from interim fire Chief David Witt urging people to take precautions for fire safety.

“As your Kern County Interim Fire Chief, I never want to wake up in the middle of the night to hear about someone dying because of a fire,” the statement read. “The tragic events of last night make our community sit up and take notice.”
