Part 1

After getting the decree from the queen, Jonathan went right into the center of the square to make the announcement. The queen wanted as many people in attendance, all the better for finding a spouse for her son.

"The prince is having a ball", Jonathan said, getting everyone's attention. "His Royal Highness Stefano William, son of Her Majesty Queen Genevieva Ambre Angelique Anneliese Delta-"

"Delta?", a voice in the crowd called out in confusion.

"Delta", Jonathan continued without a beat, "Galatea....is having a ball!"

That was all anybody needed to go into a frenzy. In the crowd was Murray, who was immediately scheming. A prince on the prowl for a royal companion could be very advantageous indeed.

Meanwhile, Jonathan was on the move, going to florists, bakers, butchers, and tailors to begin setting up for the ball. Obviously any royal affair had to be big and loud but finding a suitor for the prince was even more reason to go big.

News of the ball reached far and wide and even Eddie heard of it. While he typically didn't give a rat's ass about royalty, even he wasn't immune to the implied romance of possibly meeting the love of your life at what was basically a lavish dance party.

Any excitement he would've had was instantly squashed when his family decided a ball meant they had to do extravagant shopping and use him like a beast of burden. The lack of consideration was so much that even when they got home, they expected him to open the door even with his arms full.

Sure. Yeah. Of course. Not a tall order at all.

The moment he opened it and tried to get inside, Tommy practically ran into him like a bull trying to get in first, nearly making everything fall from Eddie's hands.

"Edgar your lack of grace is staggering", Murray commented.

Eddie kept from muttering under his breath. No need to put anymore attention on himself. Turned out he didn't need to. Murray gave a put-upon sigh and went into his old spiel without Eddie saying a word.

"To think, people told me to throw you out. But I didn't! No, my saintly soul wouldn't allow it." Murray fiddled with Jason's hair until it was how he liked it. "Even though I already had two stallions in my home-don't slouch Thomas-I let the lame horse continue to live in my abode."

"You're almost a martyr, father", Jason kissed ass like there was no tomorrow.

Murray put a hand to his heart. "I know. Edgar, prepare us some tea and bring it to our rooms. Boys, we need our beauty rest if we're going to be ready for the ball. Come along now."

Tommy and Jason followed diligently as Murray went up the stairs. Eddie watched them go, holding his tongue until they were out of ear shot, but he only needed to wait until their backs were turned to flip them off.

Then he turned on his own heel to start making their tea. They'd probably be asleep before he finished making it but if they weren't and he wasn't it'd be hell.

"Who needs a ball anyway, I'll give em some balls", he muttered to himself as he got a kettle going. They could go off for their one night of splendor and entertainment. Eddie could get all that right here in the kitchen. His own little corner of paradise.

As the tea was being brewed, Eddie turned, making his hair flourish around his head.

"Your Highness, how do you do?" He gave a deep bow to the broom. "Lovely evening isn't it?"

Eddie had never laid eyes on the prince. But someone who had the whole kingdom fawning over him couldn't just be riding the royal title. He was probably as handsome and as charming as the rumors said. Eddie tried to imagine someone like that and to his surprise, he came up with the guy he met earlier.

He certainly had a cordial air about him. And handsome, there was no doubt about that. What had his name been again?

"Me? A dance?" Eddie pretended the stranger had just extended his hand. He was dressed to the nines, probably in blue or green, those colors suited him. And he wanted to dance with Eddie.

"Oh I couldn't. But if you insist~"

Eddie started to sway with the broom, thinking of what it would feel like to have arms around him. To have someone look at his mess of a hair and call him beautiful. To kiss his hands, raw from work, with love. To want him, to actually want him, from now until-

"Where's that tea!", Tommy's shrill voice barked from upstairs.

Well, that was it for play time pretend. Eddie poured three cups and balanced them all pretty masterfully if he did say so himself. They could keep their balls and temporary delights. Eddie had a world of wonder in his head to keep him content.

93: Vampire Weekend // Contra

Contra Vampire Weekend 2010, XL Recordings

Contra dropped right in the heart of what was, in retrospect but also at the time, an incredibly stupid backlash against Vampire Weekend. Fortunately, in the year of Our Lord 2023, there’s no longer any need to litigate the right of this band to exist, but it’s funny to look back at how perfectly calibrated this album was to further piss off anyone who’d hated their debut. “Too Ivy League, too WASPy,” detractors groused, so here’s a song called “Diplomat’s Son.” “They shouldn’t be appropriating African music,” members of the faculty of arts moaned, so here’s an updated song from Koenig and Tomson’s pre-VW hip-hop project (“Giving Up the Gun”). “They’re inauthentic!” said some guy in a Bad Religion t-shirt, so here are a few Auto-Tuned bars, causing that man (and Jay-Z presumably) to spontaneously shit his drawers.

I don’t think Contra is the sound of trolling, exactly, so much as it is a band who heard everyone telling them the places they shouldn’t go and decided to go have a poke around some of them. If it’s a hair less consistent than their wall-to-wall banger debut, it also reaps the benefits of its wider range: even as “Cousins” and the extraordinary “White Sky” proved they were still capable of writing compact indie pop gems, the dayglo electronica of “Run” and languid bleep-bloop ska of “Diplomat’s Son” found them creating ever more immersive soundscapes, each full of unexpected detail and surprise. Though it’s fair to think of it as a bridge between their self-titled and the celebrated Modern Vampires of the City, I’ve always thought of Contra as my favourite by the group.

A bit of an aside, but despite all the deserved fawning over the band’s songwriting and Batmanglij’s production over the years, I realized recently that I think Koenig is a bit underappreciated as a vocalist. Listening to the way he consistently turns his own wordy, hyper-literate lyrics into fluid pop, reminds me of what Cole Porter remarked upon hearing Ella Fitzgerald’s take on his songbook: “My, what marvelous diction that girl has.” Like the singer to whom he’s most often compared, Paul Simon, he has a high, pretty voice that might seem thin in the hands (cords?) of a less sensitive vocalist, but he transcends it by making the right choices. In 2014 Koenig performed a duet of “I Think Ur a Contra” with Angelique Kidjo, a vocalist who is always poised to (warmly) eat her duet partner’s lunch, yet despite the massive disparity in firepower, Koenig holds his own. He keeps to the breathy little melismatic adornments that brought him to the dance even as she does her usual bravura thing, and the steadiness of his performance makes for be a nice study in contrasts, two ways to get at the emotion latent in an elegantly built song.

Jessica Guernsey and Once Upon A Moonless Night By Angelique Fawns   On her Instagram feed, Jessica calls herself, “A slushpile reader by day, short story writer by night.” Her business cards give her the title “The Crusher of Dreams.” I met her at Superstars Writing Seminar 2024 and immediately loved her gregarious and welcoming personality. She contacted me recently about listing a new anthology she is working on with “The Brothers Uber” in my monthly market list.   What a wonderful opportunity to get the inside scoop on what she is looking for and get to know her better!  AF: How did you get involved with Once Upon a Moonless Night? JG: I met Logan Uber during our Masters cohort at Western Colorado University. He also joined us at Superstars Writing Seminar. My story was accepted to his Once Upon a Future Time Vol 4, an anthology of sci-fi fairytales. I wrote a version of Puss n’Boots, where the cat is instead a small robot. Cathryn Uber is an amazing editor that I worked with for my story. Could not ask for a more capable team.   AF: Who is Jessica Guernsey? How do you spend your days and what do you dream about? JG: Really, I’m just a weirdo who talks to her imaginary friends and writes strange stories. But my dream is to start my own publishing house and produce more anthologies! What can I say? I love short stories.   AF: Why slush-reading and editing as well as writing?  Why short stories over novels? JG: When I was just a baby writer at one of my first writing conferences, I made a connection that led to my first job as a manuscript evaluator for a small press. That led to becoming a slush reader for a larger press. Around this time, I found a love for writing short stories. Through more connections I made at writing conferences, I began reading the slush for anthologies. I was hooked!  I used to write novels. I have three that are finished, even queried them. I had a major heartbreak over a novel that took me 3 years to write. My short stories take around 3 weeks. And they don’t break my heart. Some writers are novelists. Some writers prefer shorter forms. We are all still authors.   AF: What do you do as a day job and how do you find time for writing? JG: I read the slush for my day job, hence my title as the Crusher of Dreams. Part of the reason my last novel took 3 years was because I didn’t keep my writing time sacred. I let too many things (mostly the little people I birthed) take that time. Once I started treating my writing as a business, worthy of dedicated time, I really started making progress.   AF: Who are your influences and favorite authors? JG: Jim Butcher was my first love. His Dresden Files books opened my eyes to a world with magic that didn’t involve riding on horses and eating at inns. Dresden lives in modern Chicago as the only wizard listed in the yellow pages.  I also really love Seanan McGuire. Her series are so vastly different. They’ve inspired me to branch out and find other genres.  Jack MacDevitt was the reason I started writing sci-fi. His Pricilla Hutch series explores a universe where we never found intelligent life and what that future looks like. As writers, we are always asking “what if…” for our stories. Jack convinced me to ask, “what if it’s not…?”   AF: What kind of writing do you do yourself and where have you been published? JG: I write weird short stories! A lonely space mermaid, loyal aliens, murderous bugs, a pirate tale based on my ancestor. And a couple Christmas Romances. I currently have 19 stories published with WordFire Press, Air&Nothingness Press, and a bunch of others. I even have a few flash fiction pieces in coloring books! You can find my stories at jessicaguernsey.com.   AF: How do writing conferences figure into your career plan? JG: I love writing conferences! Though I should probably add that I am an extrovert, so I thrive. When I meet new writers who want to improve, my first piece of advice is always “start attending writing conference.

” Even if all you have access to are virtual workshops. Not only will you expand on your craft, but you’ll also broaden your horizons and discover more options for your work. Networking is huge in this business. All the work I’ve gotten as a writer has been because of the connections I made at writing conferences.   AF: What kind of stories will have the edge for acceptance into Once Upon a Moonless Night? JG: We are looking for darker stories! That doesn’t mean we want only horror. Betrayal, revenge and redemption can come in all different colors. Be sure at least one of those three elements is the main theme of your story to avoid an easy rejection. I like a story with a hopeful message in the end, but if your story doesn’t have that, it is absolutely not a deal breaker. What *is* a deal breaker is sending us a story that does not fit the theme. Always follow the guidelines, my friends! You’d be surprised how much that will put you ahead of the other submissions.   AF: In your opinion, what is the best way to find profit in our field? JG: I’ve talked to many people about this very topic! Their answers have been to get your rights back and resubmit those stories are reprints. When you have enough with a central theme, release a collection. Don’t sit on your heels while waiting to hear back. Keep writing. Keep submitting.   AF: What is in the future for Jessica?
