ok some thoughts for a ‘what if’ reboot:
vice kings: julius, tanya, pierce, johnny.
ben died in the 70s & julius inherited the vice kings. he was unable to walk away from such power.
pierce is tanya’s best friend, the only guy who doesn’t want something from her except friendship and respect. she’s trying to convince him they can overthrow jules.
johnny is a professional boxer beholden to the kingdom come entertainment conglomerate. they have many times covered up his crimes and arrests.
saints: angela, lin, aisha, miguel.
angela takes offence at jules’ perversion of her brother’s memory, the things he’s doing in ben’s name. worst of all, she never saw any profits for the part she played in his rise.
aisha, lin and miguel are lieutenants with their own crews.
miguel is carlos’ older brother.
brotherhood mc: maero, victor, troy.
a biker gang.
the carnales were completely wiped out in the 70s, so victor was never affiliated with them. he was good friends with maero and followed him when he started the gang.
troy is undercover for the stilwater pd.
stilwater tongs: wong, donnie, shaundi.
the saints and wong strike up an alliance to take on julius and swap members to ensure the other behaves. wong receives shaundi, a 17 year old techie who gets along with his nephew.
colombians: manuel, luz, dex.
dex is the colombians’ man on the ground in stilwater.

June Reading Recap
Heaven Official's Blessing: vol. 6 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. BOOK FOUR OF TGCF BABY, WE LOVE A DOWNWARD SPIRAL
I'm not saying that book four and all of the continuous trauma and misery that comes with it is my favorite part of TGCF as a whole, but I am saying it's very good for me personally and has some of my favorite moments.
Urban Jungle: The History and Future of Nature in the City by Ben Wilson. I read Darwin Comes to Town some years ago and was very struck by it (drove people around me crazy by referencing it constantly in conversation), so when I saw this book on a new releases table I immediately put it on my to-read list. I ended up being...not dissatisfied with it, but not really satisfied, either. A solid 3-star read, for some interesting stuff around how cities have and are dealing with the question of nature in an urban environment. Read interestingly paired with Fuzz by Mary Roach, which I also read recently.
I felt like in some places the author veered a little more into apologetics for why cities are good for nature, actually, than I found strictly convincing. But I'd say if you've got some spare time and any interest in urban infrastructure and the natural world, it's worth a read.
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati. A second book in recent memory that was a retelling of a Greek myth and didn't make me actively angry! I don't know that I'd say I recommend it either, though. There were things I liked about it, and it was certainly interesting to see an iteration of the story of Clytemnestra that makes use of the version where Agamemnon was her second marriage and she had a previous husband and child. I think what I lost with that version, though, was that it ended up with an Agamemnon who was never anything but nasty and brutish, which, while I don't necessarily mind that as a version, I think makes for a slightly less compelling story. A genuine betrayal is always more fun than vindication of existing hatred, don't you know.
If you're as obsessed with Clytemnestra specifically as I am then I'd say to read this even though it's not the best work of Clytemnestra lit I've read, but otherwise I don't think I'd recommend it more broadly.
Superior: The Return of Race Science by Angela Saini. I checked this one out from the library and was deeply self conscious as the librarian was looking at the title, because boy could that go a lot of directions. Ultimately, I appreciated a lot of what this book was doing, and learned a great deal, but I don't think I'd say I enjoyed it, even in the sense that one can enjoy a book like this. I felt like it dwelt a lot more on the history of race science than I was expecting it to, and didn't dig as much into the current (as in, past 10 years) resurgence as I would've liked. She got into some of it, but it felt like most of the book was more about the 20th century than the 21st. Still, though, a compelling and thorough overview of the history of race science in Europe and North America.
The Gathering Storm / Towers of Midnight / A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan. I feel like I have no way of objectively assessing Wheel of Time as a series because it is so intensely intertwined with a whole bunch of really strong emotions and I recognize that. That being said, I did cry during A Memory of Light so I was obligated to give it five stars by my own rule, even if overall I don't think it's one of my favorites. I spent too much time during this readthrough thinking about Brandon Sanderson-isms and I would have appreciated if I hadn't been doing that, but I wouldn't have been doing it if it didn't feel so obvious to me.
I think of these three The Gathering Storm is my personal favorite. Reading Rand in it got really rough, though, and I think I'm sort of in the minority in not hating the catharsis on Dragonmount at the end. I can see peoples' points with it, but for me personally I don't think the tension could've gone on any longer and I don't know that I have a tone-consistent way of releasing it that I would've written.
That's all for June, which was a pretty slow reading month...probably going into another one for July. Currently I'm reading Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by Timothy Snyder (a historian I've read before and really liked); I'm not sure what I'm going to read next but leaning toward one of the SFF new releases waiting for me on my shelf. Maybe Witch King by Martha Wells. I do want to try to finish QJJ this month, also - I'm very close to the end, just need to sit down and read the rest in ~an hour or so.
Also: taking horror novel recommendations, I've been feeling a hankering lately.

!!!FOR THE WRITING ASKS!!!
What writers have inspired you the most?
(p.s. you inspire me ❤)
Ohh thank you so much! I'm really touched and very, very happy to hear I have inspired you. It means a lot!
As to my inspirations:
A few years ago I had a Holy Trinity of Authors:
--Angela Carter. Exquisite baroque prose and weird stories. Uncategorizable. There's no one like her. While writing one of my fics, I would read a passage from one her short stories before writing to put myself in the mood I wanted to capture.
--Dorothy Dunnett. Exquisite baroque prose and angsty stories with excellent plotting and characterisation. Really dense writing. Not an author I easily recommend tbh. She inspires me to write clever, competent characters.
--Donna Tartt. Exquisite baroque prose (you might notice a pattern here). I've only read two of her novels, but the impact The Secret History had on me was enough to put her on this pedestal.
If I was to revise my Holy Trinity, Mo Xiang Tong Xiu would go up there. I love how she ostensibly writes about two dudes falling in love but also explores really deep themes in her stories. She is really funny, but not afraid to bring out the knives--and when she does? Boy, she doesn't pull any punches. I'm completely in awe of this author, ngl.
Also, I love:
--Zyranna Zateli. A Greek author of stunning, magical realist, convoluted and rambling stories. Unique.
--KJ Charles. Writes fab queer romance and her writing is going from strength to strength. Excellent sense of humour that is evident in her witty prose. Awesome secondary cast, nuanced characterisation.
--CS Pacat, for her Captive Prince series. Such delicious tension! It inspired me to try and ramp up the tension in my stories. My goal is to write a romance one day that will have the same kind of UST as CaPri.
They're so many fic authors I love and have been inspired from that this list would be a mile long so I'll stick to two:
--frayach, because (guess why) I love her prose. I've read her Bound Skerry fic upwards of 20 times.
--astolat. I'm a huge fantasy author and when I read astolat's drarry fics, I fell in love with the way she created a new fantasy lore in each of her stories, either a type of bonding or a spell or the erosmancy thing etc. She inspired me to try and create something similar in my stories, to come up with a unique type of magic or lore. That's when I was writing The Full Monty and I created the Lust Leaks. Also, why I created the Incubus lore in my Hush, darling fic.
Thanks for the ask!

Metempsychosis - SP23 Final 3D Moving Image Screening for Digital Bodies Class at NYU Tisch from Snow Yunxue Fu on Vimeo.
We invite you to a journey of Metempsychosis, an ancient Greek philosophical concept that speaks to the transmigration of the soul from one body to another, and it highlights the idea that our existence is not limited to our physical body. We intend to lead the audience to embark on an immersive journey into the world of digital simulacrums. The screening itself can be seen as an attempt to reconcile our symbiotic coexistence with a world beyond our biological sensation. Keep in mind the questions that are simultaneously embedded in the Metempsychosis “experience”: to what extent can we push our existence beyond our physical bodies? How do the blurring boundaries between the physical and digital worlds influence our self-perception? What role do digital simulacrums play in shaping our perception of reality and consciousness? ….
The screening is organized by the students from Professor Snow Yunxue Fu’s Emerging Media Studio - Digital Bodies (2023 Spring) course at NYU Tisch School of the Arts to showcase the final Digital 3D Moving Image Artworks. Digital Bodies is a studio class that examines and explores the current technological applications and conceptual implications of the post-photographic digital human 3D simulations.
Exhibiting Artists: Helen Chen, Rolin Dai, Amy Gao, Seyeon Jeong, Olivia Macagba, Lamar Mufti, Aldi Jaramillo Lara, Jesus Ulloa, Rachel Chenlei Wang, Tiger Wu, Tong Xie, Angela Xu, Daisy Ao Zhang, Jerry Zhao, Phoenix-li Mchayle

I'm using the reading bingo by @batmanisagatewaydrug to help narrow my focus for my TBR, that being said I had to go away from that sometimes to fill the prompts soooo yeah
Lets get into it
Literary fiction: My Dark Venessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell - I did not know this was Literary Fiction, but I’m happy it is, cause I was really stumped for this prompt, but I’ve been meaning to read this book for a while. I just hope I can finish it cause I know it can be harrowing
Short story collection: The Unreal and the Real by Ursula K Le Guin - I read more essay collections then short story collections, but that also left me with a lot of stuff i hadn’t read so I chose this collection
Sequel: Earthsea The Tombs Of Atuan by Ursula K Le Guin - The first Earthsea book is later on the list, but I got both books for Christmas so it's basically fate that they end up on this list
Childhood favorite: Seekers The Quest Begins by Erin Hunter - Before I was a warrior cats kid I was a Seekers kid, I could have picked a Warrior cats book, but I reread those books every year in Middle school, so I’m going back to elementary school with this pull
20th century speculative fiction: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin - I don’t know much about this book, but i hear it's great
Fantasy: A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin - My mom actually read these when they were coming out so I’m excited to talk to her about these books
Published before 1950: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll - Lots of people have been inspired to create things because of this book, including me, but I haven’t actually read the original, I’ve just watched the Disney movie. I think its time for me to read the book
Independent publisher: Wet Moon by Sophie Campbell (Oni Press) - I really like her art work in the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I’m interested to see what she does with her own story
Graphic novel: Bad Dream a Dreamer Story by Nicole Maines and Rye Hickman - I have never watched or read anything with Dreamer, but she intrigues me and I’ve heard this is a good intro to her character
Animal on the cover: Painted Flowers by Caitlin Grizzle - I love hyenas and as is a theme on this list I’ve been meaning to read this book for awhile
Set in a country you’ve never visited: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu - I’ve seen all the shows, now its time to actually buckle down and read the book
Science fiction: The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan - I don’t usually read my sci fi in books, it's usually TV shows and comics, but the premise for this book looks great!
2025 debut author: Lu and Ren’s guide to Geozoology by Angela Hsieh - I don’t have much to say about this book cause its a debut, but I’m still excited to read it
Memoir: Year of the Tiger an Activists Life by Alice Wong - I love Memoirs! I read them all the time, the problem was narrowing it down.
Read a zine/ make a zine: Look through my collection or make one - I’ve collected zines for a while and even made a few, so I’ll either read one I already have or make another one or both! I just need to figure out a topic
Essay collection: It Came From The Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror - I heard about this essay collection in college and I am finally going to read it
2024 award winner: my picture diary (Eisner awards) by Maki Fujiwara - I’ve never read her husbands work, but this book stood out to me on the award website
Non fiction (learn something new): The 100 Year War on Palestine: a History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance 1917 to 2017 by Rashid Khalidi - With the news the way it is, I think its best if I look into the Palestinian occupation with different sources, this is one of them
Social justice and activism: No More Police: A Case for Abolition by Andrea Ritchie and Mariame Kaba - Police abolition is something I’ve been interested in for a while and I hope this book can articulate the thoughts I’m having better then I can
Romance Novel: The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity by Saka Mikami - I’ve technically already started reading this, but I’m not done and I want to read the whole thing for this challenge
Read and Make a recipe: One of my Dads recipes - My Dad loves to cook and bake and he’s good at it. His recipes are also simpler then my moms usually, so thats another point in me actually cooking it. Now i have to choose one of his dishes to actually make
Horror: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer - I watched the movie recently and absolutely loved it! I hope I love the book just as much
Published in 2000-2009: Seekers Great Bear Lake by Erin Hunter - This might change depending on how bad the first book is, but we’ll see
Historical fiction: Kindred by Octavia Butler - I’m a little unsure if this counts as Historical Fiction cause I think time travel is involved, but I’m still reading it cause I heard it was good
Book seller or library recommendation: I still need to go to my library and ask for recs, I’m just a bit shy

ive recently looked down the rabbithole of modern radical feminism, as a genderqueer person. ive come to the conclusion that i fucking despise radfeminism and all its collaborators. more than half of the people ive come across who tout themselves as radfems are genuinely deranged and horrifically racist/transphobic individuals, even the so called "tirfs".
now, the problem is, is that i still want to theoretically learn about radical feminism. sorry if thats bizarre and weird, but i dont want to delve into witch-hunting hate of an ideology that i dont even fully understand. i dont think i will ever stop hating radfeminism, something i perceive as a downright cult, but i still want to try and understand it? if any of that makes sense.
so, that was a really longwinded way to ask; do you have any advice on this? whether it be just telling me to give up, or giving me some educational resources that might help a person like me. if this is too stupid of a question feel free to ignore!! but i still wanted to try, because my research into this has genuinely given me a lot of anxiety and dysphoria, as silly as that is.

Not a stupid question at all! Despite my qualms with the radfem community, I still find some of theory useful. And it’s very helpful to read theory of ideologies you disagree with so you can better understand where/why they falter.
And not all of radfem theory is bad; some of it, I think, is absolutely indispensable for a principled critique of heterosexuality (Catherine Mackinnon and Carole Pateman specifically). You just gotta go in with a critical eye because a lot of it is white-/middle class-centered.
My tips would be to first learn about the history of the second wave to get some historical context. Rosemarie Tong’s “Feminist Thought” is good for this. Then I would recommend looking into Dworkin, Millet, Firestone, Mackinnon, Pateman. And once you feel like you’ve got a good understanding of what the main ideas of radfeminism were, then you can move onto the critiques (mostly from feminists of color). For that, I recommend:
Women, Race, and Class by Angela Davis
Audre Lorde’s letter to Mary Daly
Radical Feminism and Feminist Radicalism by Ellen Willis
White Women Listen! by Hazel Carby
Feminist Theory by bell hooks
The Incompaitble Ménage a Trois by Gloria Joseph
Feminism, Moralism, and Pornography by Ellen Willis
You can always reach out to me with questions or requests for more recs :) good luck! Tbh I think it’ll be a very interesting journey for you because you’ll end up realizing how many radfems online actually do not know shit about the theory lol

GOOOSH ITS BEEN SO LONG!!! But here I am now. Again. I missed writing here.
Ayun, otw to Manila na. Carl and Angela visited yung court. Tapos ito ako quarter life crisis. (kala mo 25 na) Ewan ko ba bat ngayon pa na nasa sasakyan ako kasama tong mga to!!! PMS-ing, maybe!
I want to resign na. So bad. So bad I wanted to accept Wework's offer even if they're filing for bankruptcy. I wanted to earn more. For my family. For myself. For my future. And again, for my family.
Kasi no one will help. My sibs have their own families. That's why I wanted to earn more.
Then sabi rin ni papa kay mama, di ko man lang sya nabibigyan ng panggolf. That's why he doesn't go play anymore. I wanted to give them everything they need and want.
Si Papa, lagi nya ko pinupush mag-abroad. Lamang sakin na ayoko. They are getting old. I want to be with them for as long as I can. When I'm ready and everything's settled here, I will consider going abroad. Besides, I can't let go of my life here! My friends are here. My family and my life are here. Kapag ready na kami ni bebu, tsaka kami lilipad hehe.
Lord, please lead me. I know I shouldn't rush things. But please. Let me give more to my family.

Rookie-Critic's Film Review Weekend Wrap-Up - Week of 5/1-5/7/2023

Somewhere in Queens (2023, dir. Ray Romano) This was way better than it had any right to be. I'm not sure what I was expecting from a Ray Romano-directed picture, but for some reason it wasn't this. Just an unendingly sweet little slice-of-life film that analyzes the dynamics of a very messy, but loving family. Romano, who also stars in the film as the lead, plays Leonard, a man who's always late, generally says the wrong thing most of the time, and is just kind of awkward, but he loves his son Sticks (yes, that's a nickname), and he supports him with everything he's got, to a degree of fault, really. Romano isn't afraid to push his characters' faults into the spotlight, and he never tries to excuse them, but he also never loses sight of the fact their hearts are always in the right place. Laurie Metcalf also stuns as Leonard's wife Angela, a cancer survivor and a mother who's jealous of her son's secret girlfriend. The movie is basically a 1 hour and 46 minute, R-rated episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, but honestly I'm not complaining. The format difference allows Romano to explore his characters with a little more depth than a 22-24 minute TV episode would have allowed, and it breaths life into everyone on screen. I was super impressed with Somewhere in Queens, and I actually find myself looking forward to whatever Ray Romano decides to direct next, which is not a sentence I ever thought I'd hear myself say.
Score: 9/10
Currently only in theaters.
Police Story 3: Supercop (1992, dir. Stanley Tong) I have always been a fan of Jackie Chan, having grown up in his heyday in the States, but my fondness for the actor has never extended past his popular American films like the Rush Hour or Shanghai Noon/Knights series of films. I've always known about to slew of Hong Kong action comedies he starred in prior to breaking out over here, but I've just never made the time to watch them. So, I was more than happy to oblige when my older brother wanted to come over to my place and do a double-feature night with this and Drunken Master II (or Legend of the Drunken Master, depending on who you ask). This also doubles as one of Michelle Yeoh's earliest starring roles in a film, so I was doubly interested in watching this. Needless to say it is amazing. The story is decent enough, a police detective (Chan's Ka Kui Chan) is tasked with traveling to mainland China and pairing up with an Interpol agent (Yeoh's Chien Hua Yang) to take down a drug kingpin. Sounds pretty basic, and the nature of the story allows for a lot of Jackie Chan-style hijinks to ensue, but the real meat of what makes Supercop so incredible are the stunts. The things that Jackie Chan does in this movie make Tom Cruise look like a toddler playing in a sandbox. One stunt in particular was so unreal we thought there was no way he was doing it without a harness (turns out he absolutely was doing it without a harness). I won't spoil any of it for you (even though I'm the one who's late to the party here) because, if you haven't seen this, you must. It is one of the most incredible stunt spectacles I've ever seen put to film, and hands down the most impressed I've ever been with a Jackie Chan film, and that was already a pretty high bar.
Score: 9/10
Currently streaming on The Criterion Channel.
Drunken Master II (1994, dir. Lau Kar-leung) I've always heard that this is one of the, if not the, best Jackie Chan movies there is, and it's easy to see why that's the consensus. The hand-to-hand fighting choreography is, without question, the best I've ever seen. The final fight sequence (or series of fight sequences) alone, which takes up the last 20 minutes of the film's runtime, is an absolute wonder to behold. There were things I was seeing in this film that I didn't think was possible to do with the human body that put my jaw firmly on the ground. However, the film as a whole definitely has its weak moments and parts that drag, and a surprising amount of melodrama that I was probably being played for laughs, but it just wasn't landing with me. Which isn't to say that the film isn't funny, most of the physical comedy bits land, which isn't uncommon for a Jackie Chan vehicle, there were just a handful of moments that felt like they were trying too hard. Overall it's just a more uneven viewing experience than Supercop was, but its strengths more than make up for any of the film's detriments.
Score: 7/10
Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on Blu-ray & DVD through Warner Bros.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023, dir. James Gunn) I won't belabor the point on this one too much as my full review was posted literally yesterday, but I was left deeply emotionally affected by this by the time the credits ran. I thought that almost everything about it just worked, barring an under-use of the Adam Warlock character, and the decision to make Rocket the focal point of this film's story was a stroke of genius on the part of writer/director James Gunn. Maybe I'm the lone wolf on how much I loved this because of my bias towards these characters, but I think Gunn knocked it straight out of the park and into the next galaxy with this. It's a wonderful film about finding the strength in your flaws and imperfections and the power of moving forward.
Score: 9/10
Only in theaters. You can read my full review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 here.
Carmen (2023, dir. Benjamin Millepied) By all accounts, this is not my kind of movie in the slightest. I've heard of the opera, but other than that I couldn't tell you one thing about the story before a few hours ago (I got home from the theater about 4 hours prior to writing this). The story is pretty basic and it definitely takes a "style over substance" approach to its visual storytelling, both things I tend to not be a fan of, but against all odds I have to say I did enjoy my time with Carmen. For one, I love both Melissa Barrera and Paul Mescal and they both kill it in their respective roles, even if I thought their romance moved way too fast to be truly believable. The dance numbers, while sometimes hard to follow the symbolism of, were wonderful. I was impressed with both Barrera's dance ability and voice, and Mescal, for what little dancing he does in the film, is better than you would think he would be. Where I think the film fails is in its message. It does seem like it touches on a lot of things that could have been really interesting (the central romance is between a white "all-American" veteran who clearly, regardless of his own beliefs, comes from a background of racism towards Hispanic people, and an undocumented immigrant), but it never really goes beneath the surface of any of its themes. There are also a handful of loose ploit threads that just kind of irked me. In a movie filled to the brim with extended interpretive dance numbers, they could have devoted at least a few seconds to throwaway line explaining some things and providing a little more context to Carmen's situation. It just seemed like there was a large section of the story that we just didn't get to see and, frankly, it felt like the filmmakers forgot about it, as well. Taking all of that into account, though, I still was drawn into the world of Carmen. I can't fully explain why I think that is, but something about it just grabbed me. I'm not sure I could tell you the greater purpose of everything Carmen throws at you in its 2 hour stay onscreen, but I can tell you that I was mesmerized by most of it, and that's gotta count for something.
