Peter Montgomery at RWW:
If there’s anything the MAGA movement loves, it’s a rally with a bunch of speakers who can be counted on to blend “anti-wokeness,” conspiracy theories, Christian nationalism, and hero-worship of Donald Trump. The latest assemblage, traveling under the name of Rescue the Republic, will grace the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Sept. 29, with the stated mission of mobilizing Americans to save the republic and western civilization itself from “a conglomerate of industrial complexes.”
The speaker lineup includes Trump booster Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Sen. Ron Johnson, Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk, Moms for Liberty’s Tiffany Justice, Pizzagate promoter Jack Posobiec, Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, anti-feminist public intellectual Jordan Peterson, anti-vaccine activist Del Bigtree, and journalist Matt Taibbi. Also speaking is #WalkAway founder Brandon Straka, who was sentenced to three years of probation for his role in inciting the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. [...] Rescue the Republic claims to represent a “rebel alliance” of people “of every culture, creed, and ideology” who “are putting politics aside” to “secure peace and freedom.” Libertarian Party chair Angela McArdle is listed as a founder of the group, the latest iteration of a coalition of “COVID-19 dissidents” that rallied against vaccine requirements as “Defeat the Mandates.” They later organized a right-left coalition against U.S. aid to Ukraine under the banner, “Rage Against the War Machine,” which is holding a rally on Saturday.
This weekend’s Rescue The Republic is a motley crew of far-right activists and anti-vaxxers.

“Donald trump should have seen it coming. He arrived on May 25th at the Libertarian Party’s national convention in Washington, DC, hoping to expand his support, but the crowd mostly responded with boos. Attendees lacked enthusiasm for a protectionist who added $8.4trn to America’s national debt. They also spent the weekend squabbling among themselves. After losing presidential races for more than half a century, the Libertarian Party is facing an identity crisis.
(…)
The most intense divisions are about strategy. The hardline Mises Caucus (named after Ludwig von Mises, a pro-market Austrian economist) has dominated the party’s leadership since 2022 and adopted populist rhetoric. The group was responsible for inviting Mr Trump, as well as Robert F. Kennedy junior, an independent candidate, to speak at the convention. The debate about whether to invite the outside candidates at times seemed more heated than the Libertarians’ own presidential-nomination fight. On May 24th, the convention’s first day, one attendee yelled into the microphone, “I would like to propose that we go tell Donald Trump to go fuck himself!” The crowd cheered.
“I would rather us focus on the Libertarian candidates,” said Jim Fulner, from the Radical Caucus. “I’m fearful that come later this summer, when I’m working the county fair, someone will say, ‘Oh, Libertarians, you guys are the Donald Trump people.’” Nick Apostolopoulos, from California, welcomed the attention Mr Trump’s speech brought—and said his presence proved “this party matters, and that they have to try and appeal to this voting bloc.”
Few believed that Mr Trump won much support. He promised to appoint a Libertarian to his cabinet and commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, who is serving life in prison after founding the dark-web equivalent of Amazon for illegal drugs. The crowd responded positively to Mr Trump’s nod to a Libertarian cause célèbre, but booed after he asked them to choose him as the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee. Mr Trump hit back, “If you want to lose, don’t do that. Keep getting your 3% every four years.”
Mr Kennedy was more disciplined, tailoring his speech to the crowd by highlighting his opposition to covid lockdowns. Even so he received a cool reception. Libertarians want a candidate who will promise to abolish, not reform, government agencies.
The reality is that Libertarians are more interested in positions than personalities. The exception may be the broad admiration for Ron Paul, a retired Republican congressman whom many cite as their lodestar. But at 88 Mr Paul has achieved the difficult feat of being considered too old to plausibly run for president.
(…)
But the party is far from unified. Given the choice between Mr Oliver and “none of the above”, more than a third of the delegates preferred no one. It remains uncertain whether the party’s candidate will appear on the ballot in all 50 states, as several previous nominees have. If the Libertarian candidate has any influence on the presidential election this year, it will be as a spoiler in a close-run swing state.
Mr Oliver’s victory marked a rare defeat for the Mises Caucus. But the re-election of Angela McArdle, a Mises Caucus member, as the national party chairperson is perhaps more important to the future of the movement. Ms McArdle faced criticism for her decision to invite outside candidates to speak. Controversy over the Mises Caucus had led several state delegations to split, and much of the convention’s floor time was eaten up over fights about whom to recognise. The rise of the Mises wing of the party has led more pragmatically minded members to largely give up on the project of advancing libertarian ideas by building a political party.
The party struggles on big stages, such as in presidential, gubernatorial or Senate contests. Yet it occasionally wins municipal elections, leaving some to wonder whether national activism is pointless or even counter-productive. Why would Libertarians invest time in a hopeless race for president when they could direct their energy to fighting a local sales tax or antiquated laws restricting alcohol sales?
(…)
The party faithful believe that national and local activism are not mutually exclusive. Elijah Gizzarelli won fewer than 3,000 votes when he ran for governor of Rhode Island as a Libertarian two years ago, but he argues that the party has a long record of success—so long as the definition of success expands beyond winning elections. He says the party succeeds by shifting the “Overton window”, or the spectrum of political ideas that are generally considered acceptable.”

From MoveOn. Tuesday, June 4, 2024 Angela McArdle: "I encourage people to use Chase Oliver's campaign to draw protest votes from the left." Washington DC - Libertarian Party Chair Angela McArdle Urge party members to support Donald TrumpShe revealed the party's strategy by increasing the Democrats' chances of victory by voting for Democratic presidential candidate Chase Oliver in a blue state. To Live Stream In announcing his support for presidential candidate Chase Oliver, McArdle outlined his plan: Libertarians vote for Oliver and rally the left-leaning vote to put Trump in office. McArdle couldn't have made it clearer: "Losers, stop Biden. You have to do everything in your power to beat Joe Biden. And one of the best ways to do that is to endorse Chase Oliver and go all out for him in blue states... "I support this clown show 100%. We must work aggressively to help him get the support he needs from the national party, especially in blue states. I encourage people to use Chase Oliver's campaign to draw protest votes from the left." Previous reports have said Trump allies and MAGA megadonors Investing in third-party presidential candidatesDemocrats, including independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are trying to tilt the election against President Biden, and now the Libertarian Party appears to be joining in. "McArdle said this is a clown show, and she's right," said Joel Payne, chief communications officer for MoveOn Political Action. "Trump and his MAGA allies are already Funding third-party presidential candidates "It's not surprising to see MAGA donors and the Libertarian Party teaming up with the same tactics, because they know they're in Biden's way. MoveOn members are ready and willing to fight back against these threats to ensure President Biden is elected for another four years." ### move on This year, MoveOn celebrates 25 years of people-powered progress. For more than a generation, MoveOn has built an independent political force, mobilizing the left to elect Democrats and achieve progressive change. MoveOn is a bulwark against the radical right, guiding our collective voice, advocating for a progressive foreign policy, defending our democracy, and promoting justice for all.

This question is, is it ever justified to torture an individual to save the lives of many? And if the answer is yes, how far can you go? This issue is indeed a very sensitive subject and I think it takes guts for any filmmaker to put it out there in the open like Gregor Jordan did. Add to that the clever fact that he doesn’t actually make a choice, but rather lets the audience decide on whatever they want to think and feel, and you have a pretty gutsy and controversial concept. In a nutshell, this film is about a man of American descent who has become a Muslim and has now, as an act of terrorism, planted 3 nuclear bombs in 3 major American cities which will go off in four days. Screenwriter Peter Woodward made some very tactical decisions considering the characters in the story. They are all somewhat stereotypical, but this is no bother because they’re all there for a reason. Carrie-Anne Moss, as an FBI investigator, represents the conscience, the sensitivity and the struggle to make the right decision. Samuel L. Jackson is her polar opposite; the brutal, rational, stone cold “interrogator” who does what he does because he’s the only one who can and willing to do it. The means he is willing to go to in order to get his subject to talk ...

On COI #84, Kyle is joined by Angela McArdle, Joanne Leon, and Kelley Lane to discuss forming broad antiwar and anti-lockdown coalitions. The US empire is stronger than ever in 2021, with wars and interventions expanding from West Africa to Central Asia to the tune of $1 trillion a year. At home, Americans are locked down, masked up and ordered to avoid all human contact.
While opposing wars and lockdowns are critical issues for libertarians, Americans all over the political spectrum are increasingly ready to beat back the empire. Angela, Joanne, Kelley and Kyle discuss the need – and opportunity – to unite all who stand against tyranny on these important issues.

David Weigel at Semafor:
Donald Trump will speak at the Libertarian National Convention on May 23rd in D.C., where the third party will gather to nominate its presidential ticket. “This momentous occasion will mark the first time a former President directly addresses our members, candidates, and executive committee,” the Libertarian Party announced on Tuesday morning. “Don’t miss this opportunity to hear insights from a prominent figure in American politics and watch him engage with Libertarian ideals.” The LP invited both Trump and President Joe Biden to address delegates; earlier this year, the California Libertarian Party invited every major third party candidate to its state convention, getting a warm reception from delegates but next to no support in a straw poll. In 2016, when it nominated former GOP governors Gary Johnson and William Weld for President, the Libertarian Party positioned itself as a sensible alternative to the statist Democratic Party and the far-right MAGA GOP. It maintained that position during Trump’s presidency. “Whatever libertarian impulses Trump the candidate seemed to have,” the party wrote in a 2018 statement, “his actual performance as president stands in stark contrast. Donald Trump is the opposite of a Libertarian.” What changed? In 2022, the right-wing Mises Caucus won control of the party, powered by frustration at the Johnson/Weld nomination (which compromised on numerous Libertarian positions) and the party’s failure to capitalize on anger at COVID-19 restrictions. In her speech to the California convention this year, LP national chair Angela McArdle said that she needed to focus on “creative growth” and finding new allies. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s candidacy was appealing to the sort of anti-establishment voters who often voted Libertarian and some members were pushing for him to lead the ticket.
Donald Trump speaking at the Libertarian Party convention is proof that the LP has betrayed its libertarian roots, and this is a result of the far-right MAGA-friendly Mises Caucus getting their hands on the party's apparatus.

Libertarians Must Be 'Truth Tellers,' Says New Party Chair Angela McArdle
Libertarians Must Be ‘Truth Tellers,’ Says New Party Chair Angela McArdle
“The main function of the Libertarian Party is to try to make the United States a freer place,” says Angela McArdle, who won her election for Libertarian National Committee chair with an overwhelming 70 percent of the vote at the party’s national convention in Reno, Nevada, last May. “People disagree on what strategy to take to achieve that purpose. I believe there’s room for both strategies: to…

From the Tom Woods Letter: Throughout the two-year lockdown/mask/mandate regime, we barely heard a peep out of the national Libertarian Party. Some good work was done at the state and local level, and my friend Angela McArdle, of the Los Angeles County LP, did heroic work in Los Angeles against the absurd mandates there. But the national party was a disgrace, as usual. You can always count on the national party, and its feckless, constantly ratioed Twitter account, to jump on whatever the latest leftist bandwagon is, to adopt the regime’s line on controversial issues (Tucker Carlson and January 6 are … Continue reading →

Mises Caucus Takes Control of Libertarian Party
Mises Caucus Takes Control of Libertarian Party
A four-year battle for control of the Libertarian Party (L.P.) ended Saturday in Reno with a victory for the Mises Caucus at the party’s national convention. The faction’s chosen candidate for chair of the party’s national committee, Angela McArdle, won on the first round of balloting with 692 votes—more than 69 percent of the voting delegates. McArdle’s first tweet after winning was…
