Devika Rani (Achhut Kanya)—She was grandniece of Rabindranath Tagore (laureate). She was sent to boarding school in England at age nine and grew up there. After completing her schooling, she joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and the Royal Academy of Music to study acting and music, at a time when aristocratic women did not enter showbiz. She studied filmmaking in Berlin. It is well known that she underwent training at the UFA Studios in the art and technique of acting under Eric Pommer, and other aspects of film production including costume and set designing and make-up, under eminent directors like GW Pabst, Fritz Lang, Emil Jannings and Josef von Sternberg. She is also reported to have worked with Marlene Dietrich. She had a multi-faceted personality and took on many responsibilities of film production at Bombay Talkies, a studio that she co-founded with Himanshu Rai in Mumbai in 1934. She often took care of hair and make up, supervised set design and editing, scouted for new talent and mentored them. She was the face of Bombay Talkies, and also the reason behind the political and financial backing the studio received, at a time when even women from red light districts refused to work as actresses. She was the first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, when it was instituted in 1970.

Most public people get terribly lofty about seeing their names in print (“Of course it used to matter . . .”). Robert Shaw, the English actor-author, is, bless his heart, honest enough to say it matters terribly. “My hand shakes when I pick up the Daily Express. And I will be comforted by reading someone else’s bad notices, I admit it. It gets worse all the time. Old Harold Pinter says my great vice is other people’s opinions.” Robert Shaw is subject to more reviews than most since he is both a writer (novels, plays, screenplays) and an actor English enough to play Henry VIII (in the film “A Man for All Seasons”), international enough to play Gen. Custer (in a movie) and Elmer Gantry (in a Broadway musical that lasted one night), and intelligent enough to play Pinter (“The Caretaker,” “The Birthday Party”). “I’ve been asked so often which I prefer, writing or acting, that I’ve started to answer seriously. I obviously prefer acting because the rewards are much more immediate. Writing is so lonely, such an agony. I’m an extroverted, confident person and I’m thrown into this pain . . .” Then why write? “I do wish for immortality—I don’t know why—but I do wish to be remembered.” Robert Shaw studied acting at RADA, a bleak and hateful experience, during which he was advised to give up. He spent his first eight years as a professional playing Shakespeare and had a rough time. “As a young man I had no charm, I was all agression [sic]. Richard Burton had enormous charm, he could get on with people. What an extraordinary life! When he went off to Hollywood, we all said, there goes the golden boy.” The turning point came with his first novel, “The Hiding Place” (1960). “From having been treated as a stupid actor—‘I find it hard to believe you wrote that,’ they’d say—I began to be treated as intelligent. Directors wanted me for television. And that’s where I became a working class actor. I’m not, I’m English middle class really, but I got into all these new plays. It was marvelous.” At present, Shaw has two plays coming up, neither of which will earn him a penny, he cheerfully notes: One is set in an American prison. The other, to be performed in London by the National Theater Company this spring, is called “Cato Street.” Shaw has based it on an actual attempt in the early 19th century to murder the entire British government. The plotters are betrayed and executed. “I hang them all on stage,” Shaw said with relish. “All eight or nine of them.” He hopes “Cato Street” will feature Laurence Olivier who, he feels, droops under some of his duties as head of the National Theater. “He asked me how many acts my play had. ‘Three,’ I said. “‘Couldn’t you make it two?’ he asked me. I said why? “‘Because,’ he said; ‘then I’d only have to have one drink with the governors.’”

Celebrating Jacqueline Pearce

Jacqueline Pearce is a British actress best know for playing Servalan in all four series of Blake's 7.

Born in Woking in the south of England, Jacqueline Pearce trained at the British stage school RADA and at Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio in Los Angeles. 

Her TV career began in the 1960’s with regular roles in the ITV Play of the Week as well as appearances in shows such as The Avengers and Armchair Theatre.

She starred in two Hammer horror films, The Plague of the Zombies and The Reptile, filmed simultaneously in 1966. Other film roles include Sky West and Crooked, Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the River and How to Get Ahead in Advertising.

Roles in the 1970’s included Rosa Dartle in David Copperfield, Claudia Haswell in Couples, and Anna Rupius in Vienna 1900. But it was in 1978 that she was cast in the role for which she would be ever known.

Servalan was the Supreme Commander of the Terran Federation in Blakes 7, the TV drama devised by Dalek creator Terry Nation. The character was only expected to appear in one episode of the saga, but Pearce’s electrifying performance ensured the character would survive far longer than the title character, appearing in all four series.

A cold, calculating, ruthless sociopath Servalan’s main aim was to destroy the crew of the Liberator and the relish with which Pearce played the character ensured she would remain a fan favourite for the series duration. 

Her Doctor Who appearance came in 1985, playing Chessene of the Franzine Grig in the Colin Baker story The Two Doctors. She later appeared in a slew of Blake’s 7 and Doctor Who audio adventures for for Big Finish Productions.

In 1991 she played Miss Pendragon in the Russell T. Davies series Dark Season. She also appeared in series such as Casualty, Doctors, Daniel Deronda and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Her theatre work included West End appearances in Harold Pinter’s Otherwise Engaged (Queen’s Theatre) and JB Priestly’s Dangerous Corner (Garrick Theatre); Shadowlands; Tom Stoppard’s Night and Day (Belgrade Theatre, Coventry) ; and her one woman show A Star is Torn.

Jacqueline relocated to South Africa for several years, initially to care for orphaned monkeys, before recently returning to the UK. Her autobiography, From Byfleet to the Bush, was published in 2012.

I have heard it rumored that Grann Brijit is sometimes identified with St. Mary Magdalene, but have yet to find evidence of this. Andre Pierre seems to have identified her with St. Veronica, as he depicted her holding the Veil of Veronica. I would not be surprised if Grann Brijit has been identified with St. Mary Magdalene, as Marie-Madeleine is often traditionally portrayed with a skull (symbol of Golgotha).

Yulia Tymoshenko is My Only Favourite Ukrainian Politician

When talking about Ukraine, in particular Ukrainian politics, I will always remember Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine (2005, 2007-2010). I like her, not primarily because of her politics but because of her iconic beautiful blonde hair, very attractive.

I love her crown braid hairstyle, it's wrapped around the top of her head. She and her hair are inseparable, making her appearance very recognizable in Ukrainian politics. She knows how to be a politician and also a fashion icon at the same time, I like it (I want that too hehe).

Just look at how thick her braids are, they definitely need special care. She is like a queen, her braid is like a tiara on her head. She is originally a brunette but then she changed her hair to blonde, becoming like an angelic figure. I need to learn how to do her hairdo.

Apart from her beautiful hair, her politics are quite good. She wants Ukraine to become member state of European Union and also at the same time against Russia. She is also very fierce against the oligarchy, especially since she co-led the Orange Revolution in 2004.

She ever convicted for several crimes but jailed because of power abuse as prime minister (which was later found to be wrong). Sentenced for seven years but only served three years when she was released during the last days of Euromaidan Revolution on 22 February, 2014.

She was able to be released because Parliament voted for her release by revoking the article used to imprison her. Later the Supreme Court closed her case of abuse of power for ordering Naftogaz, Ukrainian national oil and gas company, to sign the gas deal with Russia in 2009.

She had run for president three times but lost in all three presidential elections: in 2010, 2014 and 2019. She has been a symbol of the opposition since the Orange Revolution, including during the Euromaidan Revolution, even until now. She is a great woman in my opinion.

She is currently still serving as People's Deputy of Ukraine, member of Verkhovna Rada, the Parliament of Ukraine, representing multi-members nationwide electoral district, since 2019 for 9th convocation. She'd been a People's Deputy several times in the past since 1997.

She is also reported to have worked with Marlene Dietrich. She had a multi-faceted personality and took on many responsibilities of film production at Bombay Talkies, a studio that she co-founded with Himanshu Rai in Mumbai in 1934. She often took care of hair and make up, supervised set design and editing, scouted for new talent and mentored them. She was the face of Bombay Talkies, and also the reason behind the political and financial backing the studio received, at a time when even women from red light districts refused to work as actresses. She was the first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, when it was instituted in 1970.

irene excelled in screwball comedies, musicals, melodramas...she could do it all. she often played elegant society ladies and brought sparkling charisma and poise for days to anything she did, and sang like an angel (she pursued opera before going into moves), her rendition of jerome kern's "smoke gets in your eyes" in roberta moves me to tears every time.

A fantastic star of screwball comedies Irene Dunne is an undersung hot woman in my opinion. She rose to fame in her roles alongside the likes of Cary Grant, and was usually the funniest person in her movies. And the hottest.

She's snarky, and quick, prone to rolling her eyes, and eager to trip her counterparts up. In short, she was a devilish, charming, problem of a woman in many of her films, the pinnacle of hotness.

She’s so gorgeous and funny and her way of acting is so fresh and timeless! She’s the complete package of hotness to me with her talents, humor, and, of course, hot looks. I named my left tit after her to hopefully attract even a smidgen of her beauty and charm.

Lo nuevo de Oriundo: épica, potencia y psicodelia

El dúo conformado por Walo Crespo e Iván Krisman lanzó su primer disco, Oriente Serrano

El ansiado lanzamiento de la dupla más pesada del under confirmó lo que los habitués de sus presentaciones ya sabían: a veces, no hacen falta más que dos grandes músicos. Y una pequeña ayudita de los amigos. 

Con nueve canciones, poco más de media hora de contundencia instrumental, el primer álbum de Oriundo irrumpe en la escena con una vorágine refrescante. Oriente Serrano se presenta como un disco conceptual—homenaje a el Uruguay rural y costero, casi que un road-álbum que recorre la rusticidad del interior con la mística propia de las supersticiones orales, ensordecedoras en el silencio carretero. “Una meditación psicodélica desde las sierras y mirando hacia el mar”, describió la banda. 

Un relato coral y estridente

“La Ruta del Caucho” es épica, tanto que parece un relato de guerra, narrada en voz rota que se estira en despedida hacia el final. Las voces son justamente una clave del disco: la de Krisman como hilo conductor, la de Laura Gutman en "Cielito del Indio" cual colchón angelical y la de Gabriel Casal—“el oriundo original” de acuerdo a la banda— en declamación reverberante de “Oriente Serrano”, poesía y canción que dan nombre al disco, escupida sobre una pared de distorsión sombría. 

Párrafo aparte merece la increíble Flor Sakeo, haciendo suyo el “Malísimo” de Ruben Rada para revolucionarlo en torbellinos de fuzz. Nunca pensé peludear al ritmo de este clásico.

Si bien el álbum completo es un no-skip, "Templos de Arena" y "El Llano en Llamas" son favoritos personales, canalizando la energía de Oriente Serrano como para obtener una provadita rápida de la escencia Oriundo. En tanto "Primer Movimiento" aporta un alivio folk entre cachetadas de fuzz, la parte contemplativa del camino.

Oriente Serrano fue grabado en Dora Club Records en octubre de 2023 por Nicolás Taparauskas y Juan Manuel Puñales y mezclado y masterizado por este último. Las fotos de tapa y difusión, obra de Ana Fabricio, documentan una recorrida desde las rocas de Punta Negra hasta la falda del Cerro Pan de Azúcar, bajo los últimos rayos del sol de otoño.

El arte y diseño están a cargo de Rodrigo Sanchez, que nos viene acompañando desde nuestra primerísima presentación en vivo y siempre está contagiándonos un entusiasmo que muchas veces nos hizo falta.
