Wednesday Review (Spoiler Filled) [Part 1]
Tumblr media
From the first promo video for the series in June 2022, showing Thing on Wednesday's shoulder and showing her snapping her fingers, a callback to the 1960s TV series.
Wednesday is a coming-of-age supernatural, and comedy, horror series which is all the rage on social media. It is a live-action series created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Tim Burton as an executive producer, along with Steve Stark, Andrew Mittman, Kayla Alpert, and others. The series debuted on November 23.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the fourteenth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on December 7, 2022, and will be published on my History Hermann WordPress blog on Feb. 21, 2023.
Jenna Ortega, a Latine actress of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, who plays Wednesday, carries the series. She is known for her performances in live action series like Jane the Virgin, Richie Rich, and Stuck in the Middle. She also played protagonists in Elena of Avalor and Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, two animated series, and a recurring character in Big City Greens. This previous acting experience informs her role as Wednesday, who is part of a multiracial Latine family.
Wednesday is joined by her partner in crime, Thing, a disembodied hand sent by her parents to watch over her. Thing is sentient and serves as her best, and sometimes only, friend. Wednesday arrives at Nevermore after causing problems at other schools, like dumping bags of piranhas into a school swimming pool to get revenge on kids bullying her brother.
Like other supernatural series, Wednesday has latent magical powers. Specifically she has psychic visions toward the past, seeing her ancestor, Goody Adams (also played by Ortega), and events before they happen. This is akin to the powers of Bond, the dog in Spy x Family who has visions of the future.
The school she attends is filled with other societal outcasts like Xavier Thorpe (played by Percy Hynes White) who can make his art come to life, a siren named Bianca Barclay (played by Joy Sunday), a student named Eugene Otinger (played by Moosa Mostafa) who can control movements of bees. Also Wednesday's roommate, Enid Sinclair (played by Emma Myers), is a werewolf, who has yet to "wolf out". Vampires, witches, faceless monsters, gorgons, and others also attend the school.
Wednesday often clashes with those in authority, whether the Nevermore principal, Larissa Weems (played by Gwendoline Christie), Donovan Galpin (played by Jamie McShane), the sheriff of Jericho, the nearby small town, and her court-ordered therapist, Dr. Valerie Kinbott (played by Riki Lindhome). All the while, she tries to solve the mystery about a monster attacking students at the school, sometimes with help from others, and other times, by herself.

Jenna Ortega To Play Lead Wednesday Addams In Netflix’s Live-Action Series From Tim Burton.
Tumblr media
From Dateline:
Jenna Ortega (Yes Day, Jane the Virgin) has been tapped for the title role in Wednesday, Tim Burton’s live-action Addams Family series for Netflix focused on the iconic character of Wednesday Addams.
The coming-of-age comedy, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and to be directed by Burton, is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ (Ortega) years as a student at Nevermore Academy. That’s where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.
The YA series, Wednesday Addams’ first solo vehicle, marks Burton’s first live-action show and his TV directing debut.
Ortega is taking over the role from Christina Ricci, the actress most closely associated the character, who played Wednesday in both feature films, The Addams Family in 1991 and sequel Addams Family Values in 1993.
Burton executive produces with Gough and Millar, who will serve as showrunners on the series. Wednesday is produced by MGM Television, which controls the underlying rights to the IP.
Also executive producing are TV writer-producer Kayla Alpert, former MGM TV President Steve Stark, as well as several producers associated with the Addams Family IP: Andrew Mittman for 1.21, Kevin Miserocchi, Jonathan Glickman for Glickmania and Gail Berman.
Ortega burst into the scene in 2014 with two major recurring roles on Fox’s Rake and the CW’s Jane the Virgin. The latter, where Ortega played younger version of the title character, put her on the map, and Ortega quickly landed her first series lead role on Disney Channel’s Stuck In the Middle.
A lead role on Season 2 of Netflix’s You followed. On the streamer, Ortega also recently co-starred in hit feature comedy Yes Day. Her recent feature credits also include leads in The Fallout and the upcoming Scream. She is repped by Gilbertson Entertainment, CAA and Jeff Hynick of Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Ortega shared the news on Instagram:

Honestly, considering how Burton’s films have been so bad lately (I love Dumbo, but that’s with recognizing its many, many flaws)  I am dreading how he may ruin my fandom.

This Oscar Isaac sequel film is scheduled for release in theatres October 8, 2021:
Tumblr media
MGM’s The Addams Family sequel has added Bill Hader and Javon "Wanna' Walton to its voice cast.
Hader will lend his voice to the new character Cyrus, and Walton takes on the role of the youngest Addams sibling, Pugsley. Finn Wolfhard, at 18 years of age, played Pugsley in the 2019 The Addams Family movie, but has aged out of the role.
The CG-animated family pic has already announced a voice cast led by Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg and Bette Midler. Director Greg Tiernan has also returned for the sequel, which will be released in theaters Oct. 8, 2021 under MGM’s United Artists Releasing banner.
"The success of last year’s animated film was proof of the enduring legacy of The Addams Family and its ability to transcend popular culture. This second film will be every bit as fun as the original. We are thrilled to welcome Bill Hader and Javon Walton, and to welcome back our incredible original cast for this exciting next chapter in the Addams’s journey," director Tiernan said in a statement.
The Addams Family 2 is produced by Gail Berman, Conrad Vernon, Danielle Sterling and Alison O’Brien. Executive Producers are Jonathan Glickman, Cassidy Lange and Andrew Mittman. Laura Brousseau and Kevin Pavlovic will serve as co-directors alongside Tiernan.
Hader most recently starred in It Chapter Two, the sequel to the 2017 horror film, It. Walton made his acting debut as Ashtray in HBO’s Euphoria, and will return for the second season.

Netflix orders Live-Action Wednesday Addams TV Series From Legendary director Tim Burton
I can’t explain how much I love the Addams Family, the Munsters, the Gruesomes, the Klopeks, Hilarious House of Frightenstein, etc. etc. etc. Now this worries me as I haven’t seen good representations of these characters since the live action Barry Sonnenfeld films. The Bryan Fuller attempted relaunch of “the Munsters” tanked for so many reasons mostly because the characters were to self-aware and not being green is another factor. The animated “Addams Family” film was very child driven and lacked the sharp humor of the originator Charles Addams. So now we are going to get Tim Burton’s take on it... who has been very hit and miss over the years. The synopsis reads like this:
"The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore."
The coming-of-age comedy, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and to be directed by Burton. Also executive producing the series are TV writer-producer Kayla Alpert (Code Black, Up All Night) as well as several producers associated with the Addams Family IP: Andrew Mittman for 1.21 (The Addams Family, Alphas), Kevin Miserocchi (Tee and Charles Addams Foundation), Jonathan Glickman for Glickmania (Respect, Addams Family 2) and Gail Berman (The Addams Family, Alphas).
Netflix hasn’t announced a casting call as of yet but it doesn’t surprise me that when this news dropped online last week there was an overwhelming swell for Christina Ricci to return to the role. It’s not likely considering she has aged past the story direction but I gotta say I’m all for the Ricci fan favorite idea. <3

Not quite creepy, kinda kooky, breezy but not spooky, I guess it’s kind of okay, The Addams family (2019) Review
Not quite creepy, kinda kooky, breezy but not spooky, I guess it’s kind of okay, The Addams family (2019) #Review
The most chilling thing about this latest adaptation of the cartoons of Charles Addams is that when you read the cast list, your heart breaks for what a live-action adaptation this could have been. That being said, the animation pays due homage to the original cartoons and the film starts with an encouraging amount of dark wit and subversive innuendo.
Fleeing from a disgruntled mob of villagers,…
