Last weekend, I took my second trip to the Awaji Green House, a botanical garden housed in an Ando Tadao-designed building. It was just as jungly and magnificent as I remembered from several years ago!

This time, we had our 3 1/2-year-old with us, and she had a great time too, especially in the little tea party set up on the other side of some low-ceiling tunnels through the bushes. We all enjoyed the colorful and fragrant flowers, massive cacti, and funky, unfamiliar plants.

The entry fee was double the usual fee, because there was a special art exhibition inside the greenhouse. Large artworks using seeds, dried flowers, and other plant parts were scattered around the garden. Projections of swirling snowflakes and some music/sound effects were hidden among the plants too. The installation-garden combo was a total success!

The greenhouse will close in April for a yearlong renovation, so we were really glad we got to see it again before then. I wonder what will be different when it reopens. We will definitely go back!

A high wall made of zinc sheets stands at the entrance. Could this represent the challenge that Kitaro Nishida faced in his philosophical journey?
The museum is beautifully situated at the top of a hill, providing visitors with two enjoyable options for reaching the entrance: a rewarding hike up or a convenient escalator for those who prefer an easier route. This thoughtful design also ensures accessibility for everyone. It’s evident that the architect Tadao Ando carefully considered these aspects in his vision for the museum. This approach highlights a philosophical methodology, suggesting that the journey to uncovering deeper truths often has multiple paths.
