2024 blathering

I am so stuck at what to do for volunteering this summer. And I type that out as if its a requirement, which it isn't. But! I want to! The window of time to decide if I want to return to the wildlife center is closing which is what I'd really like to do but god, the 1hr drive on either end of a 4hr shift every Friday would be...a lot again. Its a day lost from my days off, and this year Humblew00d 2 is kicking off which will also mean a lot more freelance work (sitting, it will mean sitting) on top of my 40hr/wk shelter job (moving, it is bending and lifting and constantly moving).

This is in fact made harder by the fact that, if I wanted to, I could go to clinic side at the wildlife center too.

And the only way I see making the drive worthwhile is it to expand on it. I briefly chatted with one of the educators about a kids' intro to printmaking class (as a one-off their kids camp or edu programming)- it was an offhand convo but it stayed in my head and I'm trying to get up the nerve to pitch it back via email. Because...a clinic shift AND an arts & crafts class? How amazing would that be?

I'm also just stuck as to which direction I could move in...there are outdoor stewardship vol ops much closer to me where I'd be outside, by myself, in a place I love that sounds ideal but also like...I could do that any time, maybe later when I really REALLY can't commit to the 1hr trek. And that also just doesn't seem as...useful? There are PLENTY of summer camp/outdoor education opps around as well but eh that also is like...more teen/college age oriented I think. I wish...I was brave enough to reach out to white pines. Scrolling just trustees opps has me overwhelmed...picking one thing feels impossible but its also a SELF IMPOSED PROBLEM but also after doing it for a while I can't imagine NOT doing it. Idk. Idk.

he looks to be about billy’s height 6’2 so when he hugs you he puts his head/chin on top of yours 🥺

i was inspired by my classmates. they are very close as homies but it sorta sparked a thought in me.

lucy had sent out lighter for another errand and while waiting for him, you end up spending time with burnice at the bar. without realizing, a tall figure had appeared behind you but you were too busy enjoying the songs that burnice had put on to notice.

his hands find your waist, poking you gently and perhaps tried to tickle you before placing his head on top of yours. his hands then move around to give a proper back hug. he doesn’t feel as embarrassed because you’re not looking directly at him but you can tell from the way he’s hugging you, he really missed you.

burnice had already placed lighter’s usual drink on the counter but he just doesn’t budge. just soft mumblings as you’re asking him how his day went.

i just think he loves sneaking from behind with back hugs. to him, it’s a little less embarrassing for him (JUST EMBRACE IT AT THIS POINT LIGHTERRR), and he eliminates any sort of surprise FOR HIM. i think he enjoys being fully aware and he likes your reactions each time. the way you say his name every time just has him MELTING.

also the height difference has him weak. he can look over you or you’d tilt your head up to look at him and he’s just stuttering from looking at you from this angle. little tangent but getting ready in the morning with him and he places his head on yours while both of you are brushing your teeth SORRY I GOT A LITTLE DOMESTIC THERE

i know i'm not the first to say this, but the acolyte's cancellation has confirmed how tired i am of disney's decision-making when it comes to their content. i know nostalgia is the easiest way to a big payout, but we can only take so many spinoffs before the universe starts to feel too small. but then fresh content—content that's building on the canon by looking to old star wars lore while asking new questions—fizzles out.

it's the sequel trilogy all over again. we're promised something new, something that actually expands the canon rather than just recycling it, even bringing in concepts from legends, and then the rug is ripped out from underneath us & we're punished for ever caring about any of it. silly babygirl! palpatine was always the big bad (don't worry about the fact that this is thematically nonsense and not foreshadowed in any way), and rey isn't a nobody ("your parents sold you because they loved you"), and this isn't a story about how the force transcends human categories and dynasties (represented by a grey jedi force dyad between a legacy skywalker and a nobody orphan from a backwater planet, fulfilling not only balance between light and dark but also transcending the old to become something new). silly idiot!!! rey's a palpatine by birth and a skywalker by self-adoption and god forbid she create her own identity outside of these names our fans recognize. watch as she stands alone on a sand planet that has no personal significance to her, ending her arc almost exactly as she began. but look!! two suns! neat

i don't even know if fanservice is the right word. at a certain point, it just starts to feel like they're quaking in their boots at the thought of doing anything new. i had my gripes with some of the choices in the acolyte, but at least it was unique. it explored a new era and asked questions that star wars has only ever flirted with. like: what happens to the children who are uprooted from their homes at such a young age, yet can't find their place in the jedi order? how does one survive in a supposedly honorable system that nevertheless relies on the repression of some of humanity's most fundamental emotions? is it possible that an organization dictating exactly how one ought to interact with the very life force of the universe... could perhaps be faulty and shortsighted? what happens when the ways of that order clash with other cultures and worldviews? (spoilers: space colonialism). and that's not even to mention the ideas they play with re: the force itself (vergences! plagueis! force witches!)

i know not everyone loved the show, but a lot of people really did care about it. a lot of people, like me, were excited to see these new questions being raised. but forget it—the disney gods have decreed that it didn't hit some magical threshold of streaming hours or reach a "broad enough" audience in the two months it's been out. but don't worry guys. turn your brains off and tune in for the next spinoff 2 chewy 2 bacca
