Some thoughts on the new Devil May Cry Anime...

On the one hand, I completely understand why they don't have Reuben Langdon voicing Dante in this new anime. Ignoring the problematic shit for a moment, it does make sense to use a younger sounding VA too- as much as I hate the change, I understand it.

On the other hand, choosing Johnny Yong Bosch specifically to voice him means it's literally only going to sound like Nero. I watched that trailer, immediately went "fuckin hell, why does he sound like Nero?" and then saw the comfirmation. Now JYB is an awesome VA and I am a fan of his work but he IS Nero, it just. It really doesn't feel right at all.

Could they not have picked someone else?

Now I used to be a massive fan of Reuben Langdon- Devil May Cry and his other VA, stuntwork and acting- and I can admit to still having some cognitive dissonance around Dante and Reuben in general. I wish it wasn't the case that his voice is completely synonymous with Dante to me (despite DMC1 & DMC2) but it is.

To his credit, the two conversations I've had with the guy when I disagreed with the crap he was spouting he was also pretty respectful and reasonable. Still, this was years ago and over the years since the more crap that came out I definitely lost the appreciation I had for him, I can safely say he's a talented man but I'm no longer a fan.

I suppose in terms of the whole "That's not my Dante!" side of things, if we want an anime with Reuben Langdon as Dante, well, we already have that, and it's still one of my favourites despite all the crap.

It would have been really nice to have someone new to the franchise to voice him- a fresh start for Dante that could have continued in new games and media.

the only one I can semi comment on is Orlam as I've noticed like 90% of voice claims use that char but I've never really gotten it... Is it because he's evil?? maybe it's because I've never played Danganronpa so I have no associations with that char but when I listen to clips he just sounds like Generic Guy to me 🤣 but in my head Orlam sounds much more nasally and whiny and with a higher pitched voice. I've always thought invader zim/moxxie would be a good fit LOL (or for something less cartoony, roman roy from succession) 🤔

RRRRRRRRRR I ALSO LOVE THINKING OF VOICE ACTORS SM (I played Ikemen vampire and fell in love with Kenjiro Tsuda so fucking badly every time I hear him in any anime I become FERAL), and I had some hcs about VAs and ML/Eldarya in my notes so I'm sharing my thoughts with you...

I honestly didn't think of a japanese dub since we're talking about an european game, so it'd be a little weird for me to think about the VAs in japanese. But here goes my hc:

AARON: Darren Korb

I had to add somewhere my lovely Zagreus (Hades game). I absolutely am in love with his voice and I actually think that the monotony and deep pitch of voice would fit Aaron perfectly. It brings youth when you hear it, but what can we say… Aaron died when he was young so his voice is naturally as such.

BELIATH: Liam O’brien.

Since I’ve seen the whole campaign of DND from Critical Role (yep, Vox Machina mentioned here) I always admired Liam's voice a lot. There was something about it that had me barking deep inside. I am a person who feels attracted to voices, and his voice made me feel something. After rewatching Vox Machina I could say that I believe Beliath’s voice would be pretty much like Vax’ildan. It is deep and sexy, a little raspy and dbghjsjkghsdjkagnjdfsbgaj<3

RAPHAEL: Griffin Puatu

I deeply hope that I am not mistaken and this is the current voice actor for Sunday (HSR), but his voice brings me so much peace that I couldn’t help but assign it to Raphael. It is simply so calm, low and soft, it’s relaxing and comforting.

VLADIMIR: Paul Amos.

I know Jacob Frye’s character isn’t much like Vladimir, but it was hard for me to think of any other character that had a slight ‘british’ accent, but this is it. I believe Vlad’s voice wouldn’t sound as energetic and it would be more monotonous, but I can’t think of anyone else.

ETHAN: Reuben Langdon.

Devil may cry has deeply affected my daily life. I see Ethan’s voice similar to Dante’s (DMC4 btw, in DMC5 he sounds more mature and I know Ethan has a young tone yet). He quite sounds like a teen, and has a tone to mock people that is capable of pissing off anyone he wants.

IVAN: Johnny Yong Bosch.

Just talked about Dante and now talking about Nero. When I played dmc5 there was something about Nero that reminded me of Ivan, so obviously I need to think of Ivan’s voice as Nero’s. I believe he would have voice cracks whenever he gets alarmed or raises his voice a little, but he normally has a teen, youthful tone.

NEIL: Graham McTavish

My mind goes blank when it comes to this man, and it was a hard decision but the only one I see is Graham McTavish, Dracula’s voice in Castlevania (the animated series). He has a deep voice, shows authority and it’s pretty elegant. It made me shiver when I heard his voice, yet it’s grrr. I don’t know if it will fit Neil that much but it is my hc… he’s an old vampire just as Dracula might be :^

yes, the plans that i could not share with you (because the haters would sabotage me) were that i was taking on LACC in my vash getup :)

i have so few pictures of myself but i got so many compliments (especially on my arm) and plenty of other people took pictures of me. and normally i don't like attention but i will be honest with u. under these circumstances i loved it. my arm held up really well through 8 hours on the convention floor and i have never been prouder of anything i've made. it's articulated incredibly well, no part of it gave out or required repair, it's never uncomfortable or a nuisance to wear, and i have enough range of motion to do relatively complex things like tying my shoes.

originally i was not planning to try to meet anyone famous because 1) it's expensive and 2) the lines are long and 3) i feel weird and annoying approaching literally anyone for any reason BUT. the spot where i met up with my sister just happened to be right next to johnny yong bosch's table. right when he started signing things. so i said LOL ok i'll do it.

it was super chill, i asked him how it felt to get the call that they wanted him to come back 20 years later for a trigun reboot and he said it almost didn't happen -- that since they recast everyone else for stampede they considered recasting vash as well (and i said WOW i'm so glad they didn't) and he said he really enjoyed getting to come back and explore a darker take (i forget if what he said was a darker take on vash's character, or just a darker trigun in general) but it was briefly surprising 2 me that he considered stampede to be a darker version but i get it, especially when u consider that there is not a lot of comedy in those 12 episodes to balance out the grief.

ANYWAY he was impressed with my arm and i asked him if he would sign my coat :) so he signed the lining but he was also like u know what, i'm gonna give you a second autograph just because. so he signed a print for me as well (free of charge!!) and the print with the blue signature matches my famous paintings that i always film in front of (that's providence baybee)

i saw 5 nightwing cosplayers but only 2 were biblically accurate (had ass)

the nanami sweep at this convention was so real u all SHOWED UP. and everybody ate. i saw at least 12 nanamis and not one of them was a flop.

fig. 3: i saw all 4 hobbits in panel and can confirm elijah wood’s laugh is ten times more infectious in real life. before they were even done sitting down, dominic monaghan switched around all of their name cards so that none of them were seated behind the right name. as u might imagine much of the panel's content was reminiscing about LOTR, but i heard some stories that i hadn't heard before. they also talked about video games, other projects they are working/have worked on, how their kids feel about their dads' LOTR roles, how much they love ian mckellen, and how they would love to see something happen for the 20th anniversary of ROTK this year. sean astin (the legend) took shots at the stranger things writers (basically said joyce could never be happy with hopper) AND EVERYONE CLAPPED LOL. billy and dom talked about the best food in NZ, their show billy and dom eat the world, and the unfortunate events that led to the friendship onion's hiatus. it was a ton of fun to just watch them be themselves with each other, you can tell that these guys are all so fond of each other and love each other so much.

I definitely encourage ya guys to keep an eye peeled for events like that wherever you live, cuz some of your favs could be visiting places closer than you think. (人◕ω◕)

As I always say: Admire the art these actors create. Don't get hampered down by the scandals and opinions they hold in real life; you don't have to agree with them on everything, but enjoy the voices and acting that bring these games/anime/TV series to life. Art is subjective, and you like what you like. Don't allow others or even the actors themselves spoil your love for the art. (人◕ω◕)

My apparently hot take on the DMC anime is that I like that Johnny Yong Bosch is voicing Dante and that I think it works specifically because he voices Nero.

Like, I think part of what makes Nero so fun is that he shares (superficially) more in common with Dante than Vergil, so choosing the well established and more or less beloved voice actor who plays Nero for a non cannon anime about the early parts of Dante's life makes perfect sense to me.

We already like the guy, we know he can act, he has an understanding of the character and he seems to be a pretty decent fan of the franchise. Why not add a little cherry on top to be like "hey look, family resemblance!"

Okay, so I've had this idea for a really long time now. Completely unrealistic and self-indulgent but whatever. The internet was made for screaming into the void, anyhow. Hopefully, someone will think this is cool. What if each Persona user got their own video game? An alternate universe game that lets them be the hero of their own story?

Yu Narukami - Killer is Dead

I had a lot of ideas for Yu. A runner-up idea was Devil May Cry. You know, monster-slaying, grey-haired, sword guy with a Stand voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch? But I went for Killer is Dead because I think Mondo really exudes that bad boy, gangster energy that Yu also does. Which is funny, 'cause Yu is practically a saint but whatever. Not too much to explain for this one. Katana go cut-cut.

Yosuke Hanamura - Ninja Gaiden Sigma

It's the definitive ninja game. All of the acrobatic moves, monsters, magic abilities, and wall-running makes it a no-brainer for me. There are tons of other ninja games out there, but none fit Yosuke quite like this one.

Chie Satonaka - Sleeping Dogs

There are quite a few martial arts games nowadays. I considered Sifu, but the fighting in that game was a little too efficient and skilled for Chie. More Donnie Yen than Bruce Lee. The over-the-top combat of Sleeping Dogs I think is a better fit. Plus, this game also involves a some John Woo style gunplay for bonus Hong Kong cinema points.

Yukiko Amagi - The Legend of Korra

Hear me out. Platinum's Legend of Korra game features a character who uses physical movement to bend the elements and attack long range. Sort of like Yukiko (especially in the Arena games).

Okay, I realize this one is a bit of a stretch, so if anyone has any better ideas, please let me know.

Kanji Tatsumi - Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Back to the obvious stuff. Duh, right? Kanji and Kiryu have very similar fighting styles. Scrappy, lots of grappling, and improvised weaponry. Plus, Kanji always had a sort of a reputation as a trouble-making gangster. It fits too well honestly.

Rise Kujikawa - Hi-Fi Rush

Thank CHRIST this game came out. For the longest time, I had no idea what game would fit Rise. A J-pop version of Brütal Legend? J-pop Metal: Hellsinger? BPM: Bullets Per Minute? Maybe Final Fantasy X-2? Finally, my search is over.

If this interests you, I might have a part 2 coming. In the meantime, please somebody give me some ideas for P3mc and Junpei.

Oh I feel so on the spot, so I’ve genuinely forgotten some of the things I like in the moment. Forgive me.

Im going to guess JJK is Jujutsu Kaisen? Otherwise I haven’t finished that one after being blasted with spoilers and losing the drive to continue because what I found out made me sad… I only ended up finishing the first season on top of that.

(Guessing you’re saying I’m a JJK dude because I like Kakashi, and therefore means I probably like Gojo- Because a lot of people assume that with me. I’ll at least let you know I’m more of a Nanami guy if so, whoops. 💕 )

I like A LOT of shows, especially animated, but I’ll try and stick to all time favorites or things that come right away, otherwise we’ll be here all day.

First and foremost, Kekkai Sensen is one I’ve been rewatching for years. I’m actually a big fan of Yasuhiro Nightow’s work, considering Trigun was pretty much my first anime I ever watched, which lead me to checking out Kekkai Sensen when it aired years later, but both are a huge point of nostalgia for me.

Actually, it always cracks me up watching Naruto in English due to just how many voices Johnny Yong Bosch (Vash’s VA) did- Same with Todd Haberkorn, considering Soul Eater is another one I enjoy.

✨ Tiger and Bunny is another favorite ~ Kotetsu was the first anime figure I ever owned, years back. ✨ (Sadly he got broken 😞)

Scissor Seven, Ancient Magus Bride, Demon Slayer, Aggretsuko, Mob Psycho, Angels of Death, K, Death Parade, Hunter x Hunter, Blue Exorcist, Overlord, One Piece, Black Cat, Doctor Stone, Spice and Wolf ( I have not seen the new one ) and Horimiya are a few others I can rip right off the top of my head, but there are definitely a lot of others.

As for newer ones I’ve recently started and been enraptured with, Frieren, Delicious in Dungeon, Shield Hero, and Bofuri are some I’ve been very invested in. I’m also looking forward to when Witch Hat Atelier and Dandadan come out.

Otherwise I’ll keep it to just these even though I’m certain I’m missing a lot more. Nothing outside of anime for right now either, because we’d be here forever if I got into my shows or movies. 👍

Rpg Anon: I honestly tried my hand at figuring out what Phoenix Rangers Neo Featherman R all people from the classes would be and I seriously gave up after a bit cuz I could think up what birds and colors to give. Here's all I had:

(Side note: the canon birds plus colors don't make shit sense. Argus's aren't really pink per se. Hawks and eagles aren't really red. And so on. Some do but not all.)

Hajime: Red AND Black Phoenix. Yes that's right. Phoenix Ranger Feather Phoenix. And yes both colors. Blame Izuru. Hajime is Red Phoenix but becomes Black Phoenix cuz of Izuru. Becomes Red Black Phoenix after coming to terms with both personalities as one. Still called Feather Phoenix tho.

Sayaka: White Crane. Has to be.

Kyoko: maybe Owl. No idea about color. Yellow Owl is already take tho and yellow is reserved for the bro character. The wiki does say that Blue is reserved for the smart but young character tho.

Kazuichi: Yellow. No idea about bird.

Hiyoko: Maybe Flamingo. No idea about color.

Mahiru: maybe Pink cuz we debated about this some time ago. No idea about bird.

Sonia: also arguably Pink cuz Pink featherman is reserved for the girly character of the team and you know, "My Femininity is hella boss".

Junko: HAS to be Black and White. No idea about an evil despair bird. Only thing I could find was a somewhat holy good guy medicinal mythical bird of both Hope and Despair. No way that's Junko.

Honestly I wish I could just use Peko's love of fluffy animals and the animal ears she gave everyone to make Power Rangers.

Bro when they announced that Kyle Hebert was coming to Kon I literally jumoed out of my chair and started running around the house like a maniac. I was so fucking excited

When it came to the convention I awkwardly got in line, paid for 2 prints (my Mitsuo + a Kazuichi) and a photo and waited. When I went up I told him I loved him as Kazuichi (pretty sure he drew the heart on there because I said I find him handsome) and that his voice sounds wonderful no matter what role he's playing. After that I kind of geeked out on him - I said I was "the fucking biggest Mitsuo Kubo fan ever, I promise you." 😭 I didn't mean to be that intense about it but I was so excited, I just had to let him know that Mitsuo has fans. A couple. At LEAST one (Mitsuo mutuals I'd never forget about you I was just flipping out).

He signed my print and I gave him a little packet that had fanart by me, a note, and 2 of the Mitsuo charms (game + anime versions). He said I was the first person he's ever seen get excited about Mitsuo before. For some reason I felt really proud about that? 🥲💓 I yapped for a little while after about how I also recognized his voice as the creepy stalker in Persona 4 Dancing in the hopes of letting him know that no matter how minor the role, there are fans. We said our thank yous, then I turned around and literally ran to gush about what just happened to my friends who were waiting close by. Which means...

I ALMOST DIDN'T GET THIS PICTURE. I WAS SO EXCITED THAT I RAN AWAY IN EMBARSSSMENT AND FORGOT TO TAKE A PICTURE. Luckily my friend is a huge Gohan fan and went up to his booth to get an autograph shortly after I was done freaking out. It was only then did I realize that I paid for a picture. x'V I told his assistant that I didn't get a picture, they worked it out, and I shamefully went back up for a pic. 🥹 He was nice about it, I appreciate his patience.

Waaahh it was all so cool, I'm so honored to have been able to talk to all of these incredibly talented voice actors!!! 💞💓💘❤️🥰 I hope to see them again in the future, I'll be sure to be prepared and to come with more gifts. FINAL KAZUICHI FLASHBANG GRAHHHH 💥💥💥
